Tülümen, Erol, and Martin Borggrefe. Monogenic and oligogenic cardiovascular diseases: genetics of arrhythmias—short QT syndrome. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198784906.003.0150.

Abstract:
Short QT syndrome (SQTS) is a very rare, sporadic or autosomal dominant inherited channelopathy characterized by abnormally short QT intervals on the electrocardiogram and increased propensity to atrial and ventricular tachyarrhythmias and/or sudden cardiac death. Since its recognition as a distinct clinical entity in 2000, significant progress has been made in defining the clinical, molecular, and genetic basis of SQTS. To date, several causative gain-of-function mutations in potassium channel genes and loss-of-function mutations in calcium channel genes have been identified. The physiological consequence of these mutations is an accelerated repolarization, thus abbreviated action potentials and shortened QT interval with an increased inhomogeneity and dispersion of repolarization. Regarding other rare monogenetic arrhythmias, a genetic basis of atrial fibrillation was considered very unlikely until very recently. However, in the last decade the heritability of atrial fibrillation in the general population has been well described in several epidemiological studies. So far, more than 30 genes have been implicated in atrial fibrillation through candidate gene approach studies, and 14 loci were found to be associated with atrial fibrillation through genome-wide association studies. This genetic heterogeneity and the low prevalence of mutations in any single gene restrict the clinical utility of genetic screening in atrial fibrillation.

Abstract:
This book provides an accessible study of how peoples bordering the Mediterranean, North Sea, English Channel and eastern Atlantic related to the sea in all its aspects. This book surveys how the peoples bordering the Mediterranean, North Sea, English Channel and eastern Atlantic related to the sea in all its aspects between approximately 1000-1500 A.D.How was the sea represented in poems and other writings? What kinds of boats were used and how were they built? How easy was it to navigate on short or long passages? Was seaborne trade crucial to the economy of this area? Did naval warfare loom large in the minds of medieval rulers? What can be said more generally about the lives of those who went to sea or who lived by its shores? These are the major questions which are addressed in this book, which is based on extensive research in both maritime archives and also in secondary literature. It concludes by pointing out how the relatively enclosed maritime world of Western Europe was radically changed by the voyages of the late fifteenth century across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and round Africa to India.

Abstract:
Some exceptional situations in fluid mechanics can be modeled by equations that are analytically solvable. The most famous example is the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation for shallow water waves in a channel. The exact soliton solution of this equation is derived. The Lax pair formalism for solving the general initial value problem is outlined. Two hamiltonian formalisms for the KdV equation (Fadeev–Zakharov and Magri) are explained. Then a short review of the geometry of curves (Frenet–Serret equations) is given. They are used to derive a remarkably simple equation for the propagation of a kink along a vortex filament. This equation of Hasimoto has surprising connections to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and to the Heisenberg model of ferromagnetism. An exact soliton solution is found.

Ing, Michael D. K. Regret, Resentment, and Transgression. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190679118.003.0005.

Abstract:
This chapter builds on the previous chapter by further exploring regret as it relates to resentment and transgression. Specifically, this chapter challenges the dominant understanding of resentment in Confucian thought. It argues that, from an early Confucian perspective, resentment is a sign that we require the care of significant others and that we are vulnerable to their concern or neglect. The chapter then connects resentment with frustrated desire and the production of literature designed to channel this desire to future others who might realize the Confucian dao道‎. It shows that this act of releasing pent up desire is often associated with the transgression of social norms, as in the case of Kongzi composing the Chunqiu《春秋》‎. In short, the chapter demonstrates that early Confucians saw these kinds of transgressions as valid responses to value conflicts.

Tiwari, Sandip. Nanoscale transistors. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198759874.003.0002.

Abstract:
This chapter brings together the physical underpinnings of field-effect transistors operating in their nanoscale limits. It tackles the change in dominant behavior from scattering-limited long-channel transport to mesoscopic and few scattering events limits in quantized channels. It looks at electrostatics and a transistor’s controllability as dimensions are shrunk—the interplay of geometry and control—and then brings out the operational characteristics in “off”-state, e.g., the detailed nature of insulator’s implications or threshold voltage’s statistical variations grounded in short-range and long-range effects, and “on”-state, where quantization, quantized channels, ballistic transport and limited scattering are important. It also explores the physical behavior for zero bandgap and monoatomic layer materials by focusing on real-space and reciprocal-space funneling as one of the important dimensional change consequences through a discussion of parasitic resistances.

Abstract:
The term ‘mind’ (mano) is used in a confused range of different and contradictory senses in the early Pāli canon. Buddhaghosa will impose order by distinguishing distinct cognitive modules, each with its proper domain of cognitive work. Early perception, the subliminal orienting, and initial reception of a stimulus into the perceptual process, is the function of ‘mind-element’ (mano-dhātu), a low-level cognitive system. Late perception and working memory is the function of a high-level cognitive system, ‘mind-discrimination-element’ (mano-viññāṇa-dhātu). In deference to ancient Buddhist tradition, Buddhaghosa refers to six sense-modalities, the sixth being called ‘mind’ (mano). Just as each of the five types of sensory datum enters perceptual processing though a proprietary sense-door, so the objects of mind enter through a ‘mind-door’. However, this is not a sixth channel, a window onto a proprietary sort of mental object, but is nothing other than the door gating projection into short-term working memory.
