Galpin, Kennedy L. "DuIK Bassel in Usage in After Effects and an Animated Short Film." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2019. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/480.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis was made with the goal of creating a 2D short film in the end, with mainly using a program that is not normally used for character animation: Adobe After Effects. With the usage of an originally French plugin called DuIK Bassel (v16.0.9), I was able to create a model in Adobe Photoshop and then put it into After Effects. When the files were imported, the plugin would then assist in the rigging process, wherein I would be able to create the character’s rig and make the 2D model within the program. This document discusses the entire creation of the short film that I progressed through, from the storyboarding, character creation, rigging process, and putting the elements together.

Mace, Stephanie Ewing. "The Places that Became Home: a Collection of Short Stories and Memories." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2017. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1532.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a collection of short stories and memories from the eight places that I have lived. Through these stories and memories, I reflect on themes of identity and community. I also consider the idea of home: what defines a home, how we make a place feel like a home, and what transforms a city or a town into a home. Each chapter also includes my own original designs and photographs. The stories about Sharon and Westwood, small towns in Massachusetts, focus on childhood and familial relationships. The narratives about St. Louis, Missouri and Toluca Lake, California, consider the transition from childhood to adulthood. Meanwhile, the memories from Claremont, California, Silver Lake, California and Santa Monica, California all meditate on the idea of belonging. Lastly, the recollections from London, England, contemplate how a foreign city can become a home.

Abstract:
Journalism's role in the “Twitter age” is becoming an increasingly hot topic in media studies. This thesis was aimed at analyzing the media portrayal, with special emphasis on the difference between traditional and citizen journalism, in one of the UK’s most talked about recent short films on the media topic, Black Mirror – The National Anthem, and how this could affect the public. Qualitative methods were used to examine the portrayal of both traditional journalism and citizen journalism in the film and the effects aspect was researched through focus group interviews. The results of the content analysis showed that the film depicts traditional journalism as seriously challenged by the speed and extent that citizen journalism can reach through social media – but it also shows a dark side of citizen journalism. My content analysis came to support the idea that the negative portrayal of journalism in the film can affect the public opinion on journalism, in an indirect and complex way.

Abstract:
For my thesis I discussed the struggles of growing up with a bounded racial identity through the medium of animation. Portraying through the personal stories I have endured, I explain to my viewers how often I struggled with my internal and external identities that either ignored or confronted the ignorance and racial mistreatment I faced growing up. The hope for my animation is to have viewers acknowledge the issue of the bounded racial identity and hopefully begin a dialogue that ignites change.

Abstract:
The intent of this paper is to examine the conditions for Swedish filmmakers with the short film format as final goal. Through a qualitative study we investigate what paths there are for distributing short films through the digital platforms available today. We do this by interviewing some of the most experienced and successful short film creators in Sweden and one of Sweden's main financier in film creation, to provide as just image of the branch as we can. Short films with financing from the state and regional financiers rarely has any focus on economic gain. They are rather intended to help form filmmakers and give them an opportunity to establish themselves prior to further filmmaking. The main digital platform in Sweden is SVT Play, witch is much based on the fact that SVT is part of sponsoring a big part of the government financed short films. The greatest problem we found is the availability for short films through digital platforms, since SVT Play most often has exclusive rights and only buy viewing rights during periods. When you want to distribute your short film, the most important aspect is the context, the film should not only appeal the audience it reaches but it also has to appeal the audience in the situation where it reaches them.

Full text
Abstract:
Research on the effects of media violence indicates that, at least under laboratory conditions, observation of violent stimuli leads to increased aggression. Numerous theories have been formulated to account for this effect, and most have received a degree of empirical support. This has led to theoretical fragmentation of the research. It is argued that a basic conceptual framework is required to guide future progress. It has further been shown that a number of factors affect the extent to which reactions are observed. It is argued that any comprehensive theory of the effects of media violence must take account of the role of individual, film and situational factors, and the possible importance of reactions other than aggression. Two similar theories separately advanced by Berkowitz [1984] and Huesmann [1986], based respectively on the priming of an associative network of aggression related responses, and the encoding and retrieval of aggression related scripts, may jointly have the potential to form such a comprehensive conceptual framework. Previous theories may be considered as special extensions of the Berkowitz/Huesmann model. A series of experiments was performed to test the predictions of this theory, examining the influence of multiple individual difference and film factors on groups of conceptually related affective, cognitive and physiological responses. Findings indicated that violent films prime responses associated with both aggression and anxiety. These results are better interpreted within Berkowitz's later [1993] model of the formation of anger, and suggest that Huesmann's model should be expanded to include anxiety related scripts. It was established that both film and individual factors influence the nature and intensity of viewer reactions, but the way in which they do this is not entirely clear. Ways are suggested in which future research may provide information abut how this occurs.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of the Dove Evolution film as a one-shot media literacy treatment to change sociocultural attitudes toward appearance. Four speech classes at the University of Central Florida were used in a Solomon four-group design. Group 1 received a posttest; Group 2 received a pretest and a posttest; Group 3 received the treatment and posttest; and Group 4 received the pretest, treatment and posttest. The treatment consisted of the Dove Evolution film, a viral video introduced in 2006 by Dove as part of its Campaign for Real Beauty. The film has received 19 million views on the Internet in 2.5 years. A modified version of the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ-3) was administered as a pretest and posttest, measuring four variables such as awareness and internalization of the media ideal, pressure to achieve the media ideal, and desire to be athletic. It was hypothesized that the treatment would raise awareness but lower internalization, pressure and desire to be athletic. Although none of the hypotheses were supported, there were statistically significant changes. Contrary to expectations, the awareness measure decreased and the pressure score increased. The results and implications are discussed.
Ed.D.
Department of Educational Studies
Education
Curriculum and Instruction EdD

碩士
實踐大學
服裝設計學系碩士班
103
Media marketing strategy plays an important role in the process of manipulating the brands. Brands usually try get the exposure opportunity via media. The majority of traditional media exposures are magazine, newspaper, commercial, TV show, movie and so on. However, internet is well developed nowadays, those traditional media exposure methods have been changed. And have turned into digital electronic products. The growing of smart electronic products even bring our generation into a digital media level. The traditional media marketing strategy can not show the messages instantaneity, and cost a lot. Therefore, they started to change, meanwhile they also faced some new problems. By the time when we are facing the latest media marketing strategy, we still need to keep the benefits that traditional media marketing brought to us but still follow the trend. Further more, we have to express what the brands want to convey and get the benefits. The main topic of this research is to explore the connection between brands and digital media marketing. Through the project — PRAXES which was founded by the fashion department in Shih Chien University in 2013. PRAXES held a series of lessons for students to learn the fashion industry from design to retail. After experienced the media marketing in fashion industry and with the help from fashion designer Wenlan Chia, professors from fashion design department, and other lectures in the fashion industry. We analyzed the media marketing strategy which suit for PRAXES. Especially focus on the well-known media marketing strategy—Fashion Concept Short Film as the main research. Through the practical experience from script to short film. Start analyzing how brands bring the concept, style and spirit to the audience via the short film. Following the McLuhan approach, differences in sensory effects between traditional and digital animation techniques are examined. His concept of "The Cliché and the Archetype" is used to study outdated technologies, the social environment in the past, and interaction between people and their society. The conclusion of the thesis is that changes in animation content are more pronounced in digital animation than in traditional animation. Digital animation tools have altered the very principles of animation, giving the creative viewpoints, craft, and art much greater diversity. 碩士
世新大學
廣播電視電影學研究所(含碩專班)
102
Over the past few years, scientific issues such as global warming, ecological destruction, food safety issues, and digital technology, among others, have consistently dominated news headlines and received intense scrutiny. A lack of scientific knowledge is the reason why many such issues have been misunderstood and maligned. Therefore, raising the awareness and practical scientific literacy of the general population is at present an important topic. “Popular Science” not only lays the foundations for national development but is also the catalyst for general social advancement. The proliferation of popular science education is the objective of science communication and media, and the works created in this study aim to effectively accomplish this through limited available resources. Science communication can be generally categorized into popular science and science education. This study utilizes the outstanding forms of expression brought about by animation to convey scientific knowledge to users, and also creates a popular science mass communication platform through the internet and new media channels. With mobile phones or tablet PCs, information can be accessed in real-time, anywhere and anytime. This is undoubtedly the best medium for the proliferation of science knowledge, not to mention the fact that the internet is an inexpensive and convenient mode of information transmission and sharing. Science is intimately connected and intertwined with daily life, so scientific knowledge should be something that is relevant and easily understood, instead of hard-to-understand and unattainable. The researchers in this study compiled 9 different presentable forms of computer graphics that conform to animation design principles as prescribed in previous studies, and with it created a new media short film. Popular science topics in this study are derived from news reports that are highly relevant to the general population. Through interviews with scientific professionals in relevant fields for the topic in question, the researchers created an animated content to supplement hard-to-understand scientific issues and concepts, or to replace real-life footage that would have been difficult and costly to film or reproduce. The highlight of new media popular science short film created for this study is the utilization of computer graphics, results of which can be considered a new page for popular science short films in Taiwan. Through the use of interesting, lively and vivid animations to attract the attention of viewers, scientific knowledge and information can be spread and learned with enhanced effect. This will allow for the better understanding and appreciation of science to ultimately realize the popularization of science by the general population.
