Maasdorp, Liani. "Shorts : the potential role of the short film in the development of the South African film and television industries." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/51908.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MDram)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study starts with a general analysis of the South African film industry and finds that lack of funding, the shortage of dedicated, industry-accredited training, the political climate of the past, censorship, the subsidy system, local distribution problems, and the success of Hollywood films have all played a part in bringing about a veritable dearth in local film production in South Africa. While the local film industry may not be able to repair itself fully in the short term, I do believe the energy and talent is there to start making a concerted effort to actively stimulate the production of a wide variety of local films to kick-start the healing process. I believe short films (shorts) have the potential to play an important role in this process, and the bulk of the study explores this idea by looking at the nature, form, and potential of shorts as well as the processes involved in their production. I fmd that the short film is the ideal medium for experimentation and development, and can serve as a valuable teaching tool in film and television training. As importantly, the short is one of the best mediums of empowerment for disadvantaged filmmakers, due to the relatively small size of its budget. Shorts have the ability to playa part in stimulating the growth of the local film and television industries, and in redressing socio-political imbalances of the past in a country where film was previously used as a tool of propaganda and oppression. It seems clear from the examples of other small film industries internationally that the encouragement, through innovative funding initiatives and international co-productions, of vibrant, authentic local short and feature film production can play an important role in strengthening the local film industry. It can be beneficial to stimulate the production of shorts in particular, as this will enable new and experienced filmmakers alike to experiment and develop ideas and techniques, thereby also developing the industry as a whole. Among the specific suggestions made in the thesis are the implementation of a quota system governing the screening of local productions, the stimulation of film literacy through establishing film festivals and a short film website, the stimulation of short film production through public and private funding and co-productions, and the advancement of film training. In addition, local broadcasters could be encouraged to participate more in funding feature and short film production in order to stimulate the development of a healthy, viable film industry in South African. South Africans can gain a lot from a healthy film industry - an increased number of employment opportunities, improved training institutions, an increase in tourist activity, and a medium that can serve as a form of expression and a forum for discussion. We still have a long way to go before these projected gains become an everyday reality, but it seems that shorts can, and must, play an invaluable part in taking local talent and the South African film industry as a whole to a level of performance where it will be able to exploit these opportunities to the full.

Abstract:
This creative thesis involved making an animated short film from scratch, dubbed “Laundry Day” for the time being. The film follows two sentient clothing characters, a hoodie and a pair of pants, who need to get out of their owner’s room to get to the laundry room after accidentally being left behind. Please watch the short here and use the password “goodiehoodie”: https://vimeo.com/415387205 This was a time consuming, challenging, and multifaceted project, but provided an accurate glimpse into how feature animation is made. The process of making any project like this is commonly called a pipeline, and can be simplified to seven categories: Story, Character, Environment, Animation, Effects, and Rendering. This paper will go into each of these and explain the technical and creative challenges I had to overcome to reach the final product.

Abstract:
The goal of this project was to study animation and animation pre-production through the design and creation of a short film, with an emphasis on research and gaining familiarity with the process of animating over the total competion of the film. Each stage was completed in order to achieve technical and practical understanding of storyboarding, character and prop design, background design, rough animation, refined line and color, and video editing. A large amount of focus was given to learning animation workflow in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects, and to learning the fundamentals of traditional animation drawing. As a creative capstone in the completion of a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication with an Illustration emphasis, this Honors thesis facilitated a gaining of supplemental knowledge in a relevant and ever-growing field of the arts. Animation complements and enhances illustration scholarship through learning to create the illusion of dynamic motion in still images and the problem solving required to successfully combine the various elements necessary for animation production.

Abstract:
Abstract The goal of this paper is to provide insight into the development and execution of the short film, Timelocked. I will focus on the complete process of the film’s creation, from the first inspiration of the idea through its planning, its production and, finally, its use beyond submission to my thesis committee for consideration. The most significant challenge for this project was remaining true to the story’s genre, tone, and theme throughout each iteration of its development. Therefore, the structure of the paper will serve to describe the entire process with respect to the preservation of these three aspects. My goal is to prove mastery in the fine art of film production by creating a film which effectively shows deep understanding of the time-travel sub-genre of science-fiction films, while subverting that sub-genre in a unique way, causing an emotional effect in the audience.

Abstract:
The research and material contained in this thesis will examine short story theory from current perspectives in the field and provide a response to questions posed about the composition of short fiction. A critical introduction will take into account these theories and lead into a collection of five short stories written from a filmmaking perspective. The collection of work provided represents an attempt to break stereotype in the construction and formatting of what is considered standard short story material. Focus for the collection concerns sensory perception, elements of film (flashback sequencing and extended exposition) and gender/race identity. Through the critical introduction and short story collection, the completed thesis will prove that the study and practice of creative writing cannot be regulated by a set of technical guidelines.

Abstract:
If a piece of art is most successful and effective when it is a homogenous work of a singular vision, then films should not be successful as an art form. Over the course of a film’s life, from conception to end credits, there are a myriad of people involved in numerous different stages. By taking the reader step-by-step through the making of my senior thesis short film Non-Smoking Section, my goal is twofold. First, it is to educate and inform on the basics of the filmmaking process, starting with Development, and ending with Post-Production. Second, by detailing the process, I hope to highlight the innumerable decisions and circumstances that conspire to alter the direction of a film. Hopefully, by the end, it is apparent how preposterous the odds are that a film even get completed in the first place, let alone if it ends up being a quality piece of work.

In the seedy confines of his one-bedroom apartment, reclusive loner Harris Babel delights in watching the camcorder images of others: images he buys from a strange, smoke-filled store at the end of an alleyway. They are pre-recorded trips to faraway places, memories he pretends are his own. Holidays to Madagascar, trips to Lord Howe Island, tours through Kakadu National Park -- there are no boundaries. But Harris' claustrophobic world takes a disturbing turn when he receives a phone call from the airport, claiming he left luggage behind from a trip he doesn't remember. A trip he never went on. Or did he? From script to screen, Baggage was an exhausting 14-month journey, beginning with the first draft of the script in May 2001 and culminating in the exhibition of the film in July 2002, two days after the final sound and vision cut was completed. At its heart, the film is an exploration of identity, memory and the childhood demons that haunt us. It is about loss and abandonment, camcorder voyeurism and the obsessions that make us human. On reflection, it is a film with many flaws. But the process of recognising these flaws and better understanding the filmmaking process is an essential part of development and growth. This paper will explore the writing and directing process involved in the making of Baggage, analysing structure, cause-and-effect, character identification, suspense, style and substance. It will also evaluate the state of the short film in Australia, its importance in the development of filmmakers and the avenues for exhibition and distribution.

In this paper I will recount the main stages of the process of making my thesis film Us Against The World, a narrative short film. In particular, I will focus on the authenticity and verisimilitude that I tried to achieve, as well as the limitations I worked under as a student filmmaker with a limited budget and how we consistently tried to use these limitations to our advantage. Starting from the beginning, I will first discuss my main inspirations and the writing process of the script. Secondly, I will explain how my team of creative collaborators and I prepared the project during pre-production. I will furthermore address all key creative aspects, such as directing, cinematography and production design, and describe how we used these to visually translate my story onto screen. After summarizing the post-production process, I will draw a conclusion to evaluate the final film.

Abstract:
Towards Directing: A film editor’s journey’ represents the exegetical component of this PhD by project. It is written to accompany the short fiction film that forms the practical component and is integral to the work. The text discusses the challenges encountered by a film editor attempting the task of directing a short film. It is concerned with differences between the two roles and how these differences shape the experience of a seasoned editor attempting the journey. The exegesis is structured into chapters that relate to the process of making the film: Scripting, Preproduction, Production and Postproduction. It begins by investigating the roles of editors and directors and spaces where they intersect. It goes on to examine my journey through each of these production processes. The influences of other filmmakers are discussed, particularly those who began their careers as editors. The exegesis concludes with a reflection on my journey through the process of directing the short film project, and how my progress was influenced by my editing background. The text ends with a commitment to pursue further directing experiences despite the intense pressure and frequent uncertainty involved.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the critically neglected short film adaptations of Lawrence’s short stories. Building on recent advances in adaptation studies, it looks beyond ideas of fidelity to emphasise how each film adaptation functions as a creative response to a written text (or texts), foregrounding the significance of the fluid text, transtextuality, genre and the role of the reader. The films analysed in the thesis represent a body of work ranging from the very first Lawrence adaptation to the most recent digital version. The three case-study chapters draw attention to the fluidity of textual and visual sources, the significance of generic conventions and space in adaptation, the generic potentialities latent within Lawrence’s short stories, and the genetic nature of adaptation and genre (which combines replication with variation). By considering Lawrence’s short stories through the lens of these rare short films, the thesis provides a fresh, forward-looking approach to Lawrence studies which engages with current adaptation theory in order to reflect on the evolving critical reception of the author’s work.

Abstract:
Project Shanghai is an experimental short film that addresses the problem of wealth inequality in Shanghai and draws attention to the lives of the lower class. Since the economic reform launched in the last century that brought China unprecedented growth, Shanghai has developed into the financial hub of East Asia and the gateway to mainland China. However, it has also become a city where one can see the extremes of income inequality. Influenced by the Six-Generation Chinese directors and their persistent attention to the marginalized city dwellers, Project Shanghai attempts to advocate the basic human rights for the victims of income inequality. With visual storytelling that illustrates the intimate details, rich textures, and vivid human stories in the city corners below the iconic skyscrapers, the film also addresses other socio-economic problems including geographic disparity and gender inequality.

Abstract:
Organic thin-film transistors (TFTs) are promising devices for flexible active-matrix displays and sensor arrays, since they can be fabricated at relatively low process temperatures and thus not only on glass, but also on polymeric substrates. In order to improve the dynamic TFT and circuit performance, an aggressive reduction of the channel length causes extrinsic de-vice effects that have to be captured by compact models. This dissertation presents analytical, physics-based models of the subthreshold-swing degra-dation, the thresholdvoltage roll-off and DIBL effects in coplanar and staggered TFTs that can be implemented in any arbitrary compact dc model that are defined by the threshold voltage and the subthreshold swing. Therefore, Laplace’s differential equation is solved for the coplanar and staggered geometry by applying the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation. The potential solutions serve as a basis for the definition of the model equations. Further-more, compact models of the biasdependent Schottky barriers at the source/semiconductor and drain/semiconductor interfaces in coplanar and staggered TFTs are derived, which model the charge carriers injection and ejection, respectively, as thermionic emission cur-rent. Thereby, in case of the source barrier, the Schottky barrier lowering effect due to im-age charges is captured and therefore, an analytical expression of the electric field at the source barrier is derived.

Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. Hebrews 10:33 “Diabetic Father” is a film featuring interaction transformation among family members, resulting mainly from the diabetes that a family member suffers. In the movie, as the diabetic father’s expectations from his family exceeds what his family could bear, the father’s needs and temper turn him into a loose cannon. With regard to the directing techniques of the film, action sequences, flashback, and parallelism between retrospection and sequential narration were the main editing strategies. Costumes and production design were based on authentic lives. With inculturation that actors held while performing, the director guided the actors to avoid the excess of emotions. In terms of the shooting style, the interpretation of actors’ acting was the main concern of camera movement and lens size. The atmosphere embodied in the film was a presumed psychological mindset and living condition of a diabetic. A lifelike scenario was structured, since diabetics resemble normal people who pay attention to their health in appearances or the needs for sport, rest, and diet. It was inferred that this might be the possible reason why the public ignored diabetics’ roles and diabetic issues while choosing the subject matter of a film. In addition, the pursuit of lifelike acting, a text of moderate emotions without excess, and the desperation for psychological interactions between the diabetic father and his family posed a great challenge to actors and directors. From the introduction, the research guided readers through the production rationale and story setting of the film, and led readers to the field of film acting as the literature gradually unfolded. The cinema is a multi-faceted art with a comprehensive scope ranging from shooting techniques, structural texts, aesthetic analysis, and ideology, to relevant knowledge, among which actors’ performing aesthetics and performing techniques remained insufficiently examined in cinema theories, not to mention the scanty studies in Taiwan. In an attempt to call the public’s attention to filming acting theories, the researcher shared with readers her personal exploration and practice of filming acting theories and practicality. The current article included these sections. The first section presented the development of filming acting aesthetics. In the second section, the actor-director communication process was investigated via the interviews with actors of “Diabetic Father”, with the aim to unlock more organic directing styles. With respect to the third section, arguments in “Directing Actors: Creating Memorable Performances for Film and Television” were excerpted to analyze the actors’ reflections on shooting “Diabetic Father” and other works. In the fourth section concerning chapters of film production, actor’s acting was the core of discussion that exemplified the filming acting and the creation relationship and work implementation among different technological creation departments during the shooting stage and post-production.

In 1976 and 1982, TV station in Taiwan started broadcasting Jun-xiong Toshio Huang’s puppet show. Its viewing rate shrank after more and more people choosing other programs. After puppet shows withdrawing from TV market, new puppetry recording companies such as Pili and Tian-yu selling their works in DVD format in Taiwan. Now, Pili is the brand can stand for Taiwanese puppetry. This short video based on a simple screenplay and used the three-act linear structure to tell an inspirational story in a very short time. Animated video used the same story, but use another mode to perform and build this story. Both can arouse viewer come up of questions. Author used his hand-made puppets as media, with animation and reality shooting video, created a totally different puppetry video style than poplar TV puppetry. To complete this short video, creator used literature review, case analysis and his own experience in puppetry industry as the foundation, with this artwork, interpreting the importance of environmental harm and climate warming. Combining with different topic and elements is the priority and feasible method to change Taiwanese puppetry nowadays. This video was produced in a varied way and has more diversified styles. Puppeteer use traditional Taiwanese puppetry style stage speech to play as alien, and narrated, introduced a shattered world after human being damaging the earth and destructing their civilization.

Relationship between people is one of the crucial parts of life. Mood swings, commonly seen during puberty, is the main factor in triggering conflicts. Through telling a story in which the teenage character seeks solutions to fix a broken relationship in his middle school life, the film is meant to resonate with audience about their own relationships. “FIX” tells a story of a naughty boy, JAY, who breaks his classmate’s pencil box, learning that a true apology must come from heart. Out of his mentor’s request, he attempts to make it up for his deeds but gets rejected twice by the classmates. He comes to realize that what he breaks is not only the pencil box but a relationship that can’t be fixed easily. Through the process of fixing the pencil box, Jay is restoring his relationship with himself and with others. The story is told from Jay’s perspective –the restlessness, ignorance, curiosity about the opposite sex –it’s a coming of age story of a teenage boy who learns to deal with relationships. The style of the film is natural and realistic. Cinematography-wise, a combination of tripod and handheld footage created visual dynamics from scene to scene. Production design and wardrobe were mapped out to suit the characters and the world they live in. Amateur actors were able to pull off believable performance through acting classes and practices. “FIX” was broadcast on June 19, 2016. There were 20 participants whom attended this show. We have received 17 questionnaires, 90% of the audience felt high integrity, 82% felt the warm atmosphere from the film. We got a lot of affirmative response from the feedback. I’m hoping the experience of this production could be used as reference for those who are interested in making films in the future.

Abstract Our family members often seem so close yet so far. For most of us, family is where we belong and where everything starts and ends. As we go through various stages in life, be it birth, aging, illness, or death, a lingering question is “What can we do, not only for ourselves, but also for our family?” More often than not, it is not until we are faced with the loss of loved ones that we start to count our blessings. Only when we are dealt such a blow will we see things in perspective. Do we really understand the importance of seizing the day? Or, do we truly appreciate our family’s love? Stricken with the loss of love ones, the author has been wondering, given the limited time we have on earth, what we can do for our family? Through the lens, we are able to see other people’s stories, prompting us to contemplate our own lives. This film aims to express concern for family members and to shed light on some innermost feelings and the significance of life. The audience will see how a father’s suicide led to changes in values and interaction in a family of three, and how, as the mother had to part, the children came to the sudden realization that they’d have no one else to fall back on. It is hoped that the audience will be inspired, and then re-examine the bond between family and its members. Drawing on the author’s coursework and reflections in the grad school, the film also reviews the process and aesthetic forms of filmmaking, as well as the author’s learning experience.

Our concepts, values, characters are deeply influenced by our families of origin. The composing purpose of the film “Piggy Bank” is to let people experience different lives and worlds by telling a little story and reflecting themselves into roles in the movie. The story is based on the author's childhood experience and is depicted realistically. It is strung up with a little girl's point of view, how she regards the dream and the reality, and how she identifies the meaning of life by her own affection. By recalling the author's own childhood experience, she can reflect the meaning of dreams and the difficult position she stood in when her dream was broken. When the author shot the short film, she discovered that children's aspects of values were very different, which was deep rooted by their families of origin. The way they treated money was just reprinted from the way their parents did. This shows the importance of both the education and the environment. At the end of story, it sings about love and hope, to convey the concern about kids and family education. During the process of composing, miracles were often encountered. This thesis focuses on the works, the knowledge learned, problems faced and solved, and what improvement can be made from film scripting, pre-production, execution and the process of shooting, the application of arts and animations, and the directing of children actors.

In music, an intermezzo is an independent and complete composition which fits between movements in a larger work, and serves as a musical connecting material for a play or an opera. The film is named intermezzo, referring to a transformation of a relationship in someone’s life. Intermezzo is a story about a brother and a sister, Jie-Wei and Chun. They have always been in the opposite positions and argued with each other in everything since they were little. However, when their beloved grandfather passed away, they started to care about each other’s weakness and to realize the treasure of being a family. Presented in realism, the film is based on two main concepts. The first one is “death brings a new life” and the second one is “open your mind for the truth.” There are five chapters in this production report. Chapter One is the description of the story background and the director’s introduction. Chapter Two is the literature review and film research regarding family-related topics. Chapter Three explains the style and the basic structure of this film. Chapter Four is the process of film executing. The last chapter is about the conclusions and a Q&A discussion recorded in the audience forum of the premiere. Other contents in the Appendix include script, record of expense, schedule of production, contracts of music, QA off-record, and credit list. Hopefully, future film makers might take this report into account as they are going to create the new productions.

The film Undercurrent was adapted from the Miaoli forced demolitions happened in 2012. The title Undercurrent was a metaphor of the emotions under the surface. Although the plot was based on the true story, the director didn’t review the case politically. Instead, she rewrote the daily life of Mrs. Peng, Hsiu-Tsun, widow of Mr. Chang, Sen-Wen, making ginger candy, a key symbol throughout the film. Through the connection between the food and the emotion, the director represented the strong emotions between the land and the locals. The film is 27 minutes long, voiced by Mandarin and Taiwanese, shot on GH5s, colorized in black and white and supported with documentary materials. The leading shooting site was the hometown of director’s belated aunt, in Yuanli, Miaoli. She dedicated this film as Yuanli’s historical materials, as well as a visual memory of her innocent childhood. To correlate drama with documentary, the director dramatized and involved a different point of views in the story, and documented Mrs. Peng selling ginger candy as a part of the film. The story is about a typical day turns out the most significant change in the lives of Tsun-Mei, her husband, A-Cheng, and her son, Yu. The plot developments in Tsun-Mei’s viewpoint, describing how a dramatic incident depresses her and ends up she regains her passion for life through a cup of ginger tea connecting the memories with her husband. There are 6 sections in this report. In the first chapter, I introduce the background of the creation, followed by references. The third section was the introduction of the film, including the genre and style. The fourth and fifth sections were the complete production review from pre-production to post-production. Abstract:
Every so often, education is marked by critical events that invoke profound changes in both teachers and students. This study proposes that the “Boscars” -Brockton Oscars- a local presentation of student film and dance is a critical event for those involved. In contrast to conventional routine processes and accumulation of learning, these events represent a flashpoint in our educational lives. Critical events pertain to deep personal meaning and agency. This research investigates the Boscars. This retrospective study is one of interactive ethnography which has strong affinity with symbolic interactionism using a range of qualitative techniques on an event in the recent past. The work was collaborative. Teachers, pupils and other critical agents worked with the researcher to reconstruct and analyse the event with the general purpose of informing and improving local educational practice. It is a celebratory account focused on expressive outcomes, drawing in large measure on teacher and pupil articulations. Respondent validation was important within the context of other tests of validity. One of these tests is the ability of the research to strengthen the participants in their work and to influence other practitioners – in other words for the research to share the criticality of the event. These criteria apply to the extent to which the account facilitates the drawing of inferences that may have application in other contexts or situations. For the student and teacher authors in this research it is an exercise in writing historical memory.

The title of the film 《The Brighter Day》 is the original film title of Tarkovsky’s famous film 《Mirror》 , the story is about the image of mother in Director’s memories. However, I choose to use this title attempt to present about the persist and dilemma of people which is elaborated in Buddhism. Initially, During the process of developing the story, the first element that inspired me was the main character in 《The Snow Queen》 - Gerda and Robber. I discovered that although each of character their identity has distinct, but like one person has two personalities, both personality standing on their respective position and unable to communicate ever. From this point, the visuals that come into my mind are: cosmetic counter’s salesgirl, the forest of SanXia (located in Taipei, Taiwan), the life of Taipei’s women, the monk and etc, all these are just generally existence due to their own respective reason and related to each other through the storyline. However, the element that I am really interested in is “The Ego” character of everyone in the world. To be honest, we can’t truly understand what others think, even well in communication, we wil also misunderstand. In the story of 《The Brighter Day》, everyone has different persistance toward the family and their own life. Thus, each of them chooses a way to protect themselves and survive. When facing problems and grief, then only realized that love one have a different idea about you.
