Abstract:
Hari Sadhan Dasgupta (1923–1996) was arguably the most significant documentary filmmaker to emerge from the circle of film aficionados, intellectuals, and writers who gathered at the Calcutta Film Society (and at the Indian Coffee House on Central Avenue in Calcutta) in the late 1940s and 1950s. He received institutional training in filmmaking at the film school of the University of Southern California and served Irving Pichel as observer apprentice on three films after completing his university program. He was the first among the Calcutta Film Society group to make films and went on to make 50 odd documentaries and commercials between 1948 and 1984, of which Panchthupi: A Village in West Bengal (1955), The Story of Tata Steel (1958), and Konarak (1949) have earned iconic status. He also made two feature-length fiction films Eki Ange Eto Rup (1965) and Kamallata (1969).

Abstract:
This article outlines the theoretical tenets of considering the short film as a format. Taken as a format rather than simply a film of short duration, the conceptual triangle of Brevity ‐ format ‐ programme is used as a foundation to reflect on the particular epistemological position of short films in film studies and to address larger questions of canon, circulation and context. Rather than working towards a codification of an essence or specificity of the short film, this article proposes that the technical term ‘format’ is a suitable concept to concretely identify and discuss the factors at play in the production and exhibition of short films.

Abstract:
ABROAD is a short film, which tells a story of an Indonesian student, Priyo (23) who lived in Brisbane. He had to live in his yellow car, after finding out that his scholarship had been corrupted. Priyo began his new journey when he met Pamela (17), a runaway musician who was stuck in Brisbane for a night during her trip to Sydney. Their friendship grows stronger when they played music and performed together at Brisbane streets. Unfortunately, Priyo’s car was vandalized due to his religion. Later on, their friendship was tested as they explore the city for the first time. The film explores the journey to find the meanings of passion, dream, and faith. Depicted by the main character who is an Indonesian student, the film attempts to share the experience of students who chose to travel outside their home country, in search of better education for better life. Although most part of the story is fiction, the main character (Priyo) is inspired by the real life experience of an Indonesia student in Canberra. He lived in his car for two year while trying to complete his master degree. Dramas that were presented in the storyline were based on the writer’s observation toward his surroundings, friends, and communities. Living and studying in another country could bring great experiences to international students, but at the same time, living through differences in values and beliefs could be a challenging task. The meaning of ‘abroad’ is not just about people who live outside their home country. But, it could also depict people’s experience when they try to get out of their comfort zone in order to achieve a higher goal in their life. Based on these reasons, the main targeted audiences of the film are people from the age of 25 and above. Additionally, the film also attempts to target local audiences, especially parents, as a bridge between parents and children. Hopefully it could prevent the rising number of runaway’s children. The outline of the production begins with the script development, which will be completed by the end of November. As soon as the final script is done, the production will proceed with the pre-production from December until early January. This process includes assembling the crew, finding cast, art design, and composing music. The crew will consist of GFS students for the production crew and some Indonesian students who voluntarily want to help in funding and marketing. The production will start around late January or early February, Bernadus Yoseph Setyo Prabowo adalah staf pengajar pada Program Studi Televisi dan Film, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara. e-mail: bernadus.yoseph@umn.ac.id 54 Vol. X, No. 2 Desember 2017 and the post-production will begin in March. There are some challenges in this project. Firstly, the project has to combine two different cultures between Indonesia and Australia through out the process. However, having an Australian as the director and an Indonesian as the producer can solve these. The other problem is related to the sensitive issue around religion, especially Islam. Recently, the religion feels being judged in Australia because of the action of ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) and ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and Levant). There will be three problems that are going to be discussed in order to resolve the challenges of the project. Keywords: short film, film production, Abroad

Abstract:
The Official Selection World Cinema Amsterdam Award in 2019, given to the film "Tilik" opened the public's eyes to the fact that even a short film can convey a moral message as powerfully as a feature-length film. It does not matter that short films have more limitations than long ones. This phenomenon encourages short film script writing assistance as a community service activity. Saba Exploit (SE) SMAN 1 Bantul DIY was designated as the target for assistance because of its potential and impressive track record in making short films. Given the uneven transmission of knowledge and skills between generations, assistance is needed so that they have collective quality skills and skills, standardized guidelines for writing film scripts, and complete documentation so they can be developed across generations. Mentoring activities present speakers who present material presentations, best practices, and evaluations of films made by SE. The post-assistance evaluation stated that the curiosity of the SE community was accomplished. Hereafter, it was hoped that SE's hard skills, soft skills, and insights in creating short films would earn higher quality based on solid, focused, and expressive film script writing.

Abstract:
Short films are often underestimated for their lack of duration. People think that the short duration will affect to how the messages are conveyed. However, short films are now very popular. There is even a category of best short film in Academy Awards, or well-known as Oscars. The Neighbors’ Window is one of many Oscars’ winners for best short film. This research aims to find out how jealousy is represented in the short film The Neighbors’ Window by Marshall Curry. This method of this research uses a theory from Saussure called semiotics. This research also uses an approach of Representation theory by Mary Beltran and Stuart Hall. Most of the data in this article is taken from scenes in the short film which later are connected with the theories. This result of this research shows that the important scenes presented in this movie are representation of Jealousy towards each character. This research shows that the movie is about jealousy presented by the symbols in the movie using some analytical research by applying the two theories.

Abstract:
The sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic influenced many aspects of film production, which is especially visible in the example of local cinematographies. In this article, I investigate pandemic influence on depicting homeland, memory and locality in Sámi short films. The primary concern in the pre-2000 Sámi short films was the marginalization of Sámi culture, as well as tradition-modernization oppositions. However, in the productions from 2020, a switch into the discourse about the homeland and coping with pandemic in the far north is visible. In this article, I describe productions from 2020, dividing them into three thematic categories: films about the return to the homeland, films focusing on lockdown isolation and films based on genre conventions (such as comedy or horror), used for creating a discursive approach to pandemic. In the proposed article, I analyse Sámi films from the collection of International Sámi Film Institute, produced in Norway, Sweden or Finland.

Full text
Abstract:
Phonon transport in paired aluminum and silicon thin films is considered under laser short-pulse irradiation at the aluminum film surface. The Boltzmann equation is incorporated to formulate energy transport in the films. To include a volumetric source resembling laser irradiation in the aluminum film, the Boltzmann equation is modified. Thermal boundary resistance is located at the interface of the film pair. An equivalent equilibrium temperature is introduced to assess the thermal resistance of the film during the laser heating process. The phonon temperature obtained from solution of the Boltzmann equation is compared with the findings of the two-temperature model. It is found that phonon temperature obtained from the solution of the Boltzmann equation is lower than that corresponding to the two-temperature model, which is particularly true in the surface region of the aluminum film. Phonon temperature increases gradually while, early on, the electron temperature rises and decays sharply in the surface region of the aluminum film.

Low cost and large scale carbon nanotube and nanofibre (CNT–CNF) composite films have been fabricated and employed as electrodes for electrosorption of cupric ions. The regeneration of the saturated CNT–CNF film electrode has been investigated. Three methods (short-circuiting, short-circuiting and then reversing voltage, reversing voltage and then short-circuiting) are used for regeneration. The results show that low regeneration efficiency of CNT–CNF film electrode due to electrodeposition of Cu on the electrode surface can be highly improved by regeneration applying reverse voltage combined with short circuit. 93% regeneration efficiency can be achieved when 0.8 V reverse voltage is applied before short-circuiting during regeneration of CNT–CNF film electrode.

Abstract:
The role of teachers in EFL/ESL classroom is very important for the improvement of the students since it is believed that professional and creative English teachers can help students in learning English well. However, many teachers still lack the effort in finding new ideas and in improving their professionalism as a good English teacher. Yet, with the development of technology nowadays, many media are worth to be considered in teaching English. One of the media that is being actively mentioned in educational world nowadays is short film. In this case, short film is believed to be one of the appropriate ways in teaching English especially in teaching the character education presented in it. With short film, students can have more exposure to authentic English and the culture of the target language. But another important benefit is often overlooked by teachers, that is the possibility of learning values for building the students’ characters through the use of short film in the learning process. This present paper will try to respond to this fact by identifying the values of character educations in a short film entitled Piper from Pixar animation through textual analysis. There are character educations that revealed about parenting, self-supporting, and friendship value in the film. Thus, it can be concluded that when chosen correctly, short films can be a media for building students’ characters while developing their English, all in a more entertaining, relaxed, and enjoyable media that meet the students’ 21st century contexts.

Abstract:
The Irzykowski Film Studio was founded in 1981 as an institution that allowed young filmmakers to start their careers directly after graduating from the Film School. The studio could produce medium-length and short feature films and documentaries as well as animation. Nevertheless, all these types of films, according to the statute confirmed by the minister, were not to be officially cinema distributed, since they were supposed to be treated as a film exercise, a kind of practice run. Finally, it turned out that the Irzykowski Film Studio productions were regarded as fully fledged films that could compete with films produced by Film Units (i.e., the professional organizational entities of the Polish film production system at the time) or short film studios. What is not without significance, most films (not to say: all) were politically controversial. Therefore, the leaders of the Studio decided to show films to the audience, but they could not do it officially by applying for referral to cinema distribution. In connection with this, they were shown at small film festivals, inner (unofficial) screenings, and illegally distributed on VHS tapes. By extension, the range of distribution was narrow, but, curiously enough, the films were attracting a lot of interest from film critics, audiences and... state authorities. The aim of this paper is to analyze the alternative distribution process that occurred at the Irzykowski Film Studio. What films were shown at festivals, at internal screenings, and which were illegally copied onto VHS tapes? Had all the films shown been censored? How did state censorship react to test screenings with the audience? How did the critics and audience perceive these films? Did the presence of films at festivals influence their cinema distribution? And finally: how did the promotion and festival distribution of these films affect the perception of the Irzykowski Film Studio among the state authorities?

Abstract:
Energy-efficient computing paradigms beyond conventional von-Neumann architecture, such as neuromorphic computing, require novel devices that enable information storage at nanoscale in an analogue way and in-memory computing. Memristive devices with long-/short-term synaptic plasticity are expected to provide a more capable neuromorphic system compared to traditional Si-based complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor circuits. Here, compositionally graded oxide films of Al-doped MgxZn1−xO (g-Al:MgZnO) are studied to fabricate a memristive device, in which the composition of the film changes continuously through the film thickness. Compositional grading in the films should give rise to asymmetry of Schottky barrier heights at the film-electrode interfaces. The g-Al:MgZnO films are grown by using aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition. The current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics of the films show self-rectifying memristive behaviors which are dependent on maximum applied voltage and repeated application of electrical pulses. Endurance and retention performance tests of the device show stable bipolar resistance switching (BRS) with a short-term memory effect. The short-term memory effects are ascribed to the thermally activated release of the trapped electrons near/at the g-Al:MgZnO film-electrode interface of the device. The volatile resistive switching can be used as a potential selector device in a crossbar memory array and a short-term synapse in neuromorphic computing.

Abstract:
The dye-sensitized solar cell using visible and near-infrared sensitization of nanocrystalline TiO 2 films by aluminium phthalocyanine, aluminium 2,9,16,23-tetraphenoxy-29H, 31H-phthalocyanine hydroxide (AlTPPc), was developed and its photoelectrochemical properties were investigated. The short-circuit photocurrent (ISC) was 0.026 mA cm-2, the open-circuit photovoltage ( V OC) was 186 mV, and the fill factor (FF) of solar cell using AlTPPc adsorbed on nanocrystalline TiO 2 film electrode was estimated to be 40.4%, respectively. By using AlTPPc adsorbed on nanocrystalline TiO 2 film electrode, photovoltage and photocurrent were higher compared with that of only nanocrystalline TiO 2 film electrode and were maintained under near-infrared irradiation. Thus, the solar cell using the near-infrared sensitization by AlTPPc adsorbed on nanocrystalline TiO 2 film electrode was developed.

Abstract:
Da'wah is an activity to spread knowledge of Islam to all corners of the world. With the development of the times, it becomes a challenge for the da'i so that their da'wah can be enjoyed and disseminated more widely. In this digital era, visual media is the most effective tool used to spread da'wah. One of the media that is currently popular is YouTube. The ease of YouTube's popularity needs to be put to good use, such as creating and displaying educational content with Islamic elements, such as films of the religious genre. The researcher analyzed the da'wah contained in rich short films without religious genre treasures on the YouTube channel of Muslim filmmakers to find the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth in the film. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The type of research used is field research, researchers observe the object directly. The results of this study are that the meaning of denotation in this study is about the description of human life in facing various trials of life in family, neighbors and friends. The meaning of the connotations in the short film Kaya without treasure is that sincerity, gratitude and patience will make us calmer and accept what is. The meaning of the myth in the short film rich without wealth is that alms will make us more grateful for what Allah SWT has given us. The message of moral da'wah is more dominant in this film.

Changes in the Organizational Structure of the Committee in the UCIFEST Student Film Festival Abstract: Film festivals contribute to solving distribution for alternative films. A short film created by students cannot enter the commercial path or screen in the movie theatre. The need to have exhibition and distribution spaces for the alternative film is a factor that the students make short film festivals on the campus. As a film festival under the university or institution, a film festival can survive in various conditions. This is because of the festival formed with the spirit of independence by students. Besides that, the network created by students between the communities or universities is also the strength of the short film festival. Another essential factor for the film festival is the organizational structure. The organizational structure must run effectively and efficiently to achieve the success of the film festival.

Abstract:
There are advancements in creative work, particularly for short films in the media domain now. The production of short films undergoes digitalisation transformation that promotes the evolution of brand-new media technologies. Nevertheless, the creation of shariah-compliant short film content creates a debate and becomes a polemic among the country’s content creator. Nonetheless, shariah-compliant short films grab digital media audiences’ attention, such as MTAS Production, Mr Kokom and Syahmi Sazli Production. The discussion related the writing of shariah-compliant creative content scripts from the aesthetic aspect of Takmilah Theory. Thus, this paper aimed to identify shariah-compliant elements as the basis for content formation for short films. Thematic analysis of shariah-compliant elements worked as a primary reference for short filmmakers to plan and organise the content that could meet the needs of the audience. Looking at the marketability of shariah-compliant works through the evolution of digital media, it indicates that the creative community and industry in Malaysia accepts this reform.

Abstract:
Abstract Dewi pulang (Dewi goes home), the 2016 short film by Candra Aditya, offers a means to redefine the meaning of independence for contemporary Indonesian screen production. In the years of Reformasi following the end of the New Order, to be independent was to be in solidarity with the reform movement, and to express a DIY sensibility that did not rely on big production companies or the state. In recent years, the meaning of independence has been complicated by a changing cultural economy of film, including the accommodation of many previously independent filmmakers into the mainstream. Rather than seeing independence embodied in the film or filmmaker, this essay considers the history of short film and the foundational role of komunitas (communities) as the location for independent media practice. Independence is theorized as a characteristic of the assemblage of organizations, events, and infrastructures that facilitate the production, circulation, and consumption of short film.

Abstract:
This article presents the author’s original research of a reception study of religious films amongst Shona peoples in the Gora and Chikara villages, which are located in the Mashonaland West Province of Zimbabwe. The two central questions of the author’s study are: First, in what ways might pre-existing Shona images of Jesus shape Shona responses to and interpretations of Jesus as he is portrayed in The Jesus Film (1979) and in indigenous, short, Jesus films in Zimbabwe today? Secondly, how might the viewing of these films affect these images of Jesus? This article addresses how indigenous, short Jesus films in Zimbabwe have manifested different representations of Jesus from the pervasive European image of Jesus that is perpetuated by The Jesus Film. This research is particularly relevant to current trends in media and technology, as the indigenous, short Jesus films are being distributed via mobile phones in Zimbabwe.

Abstract:
Abstract. The study presents self-report and psychophysiological data obtained in response to short film clips representing scenes related to different emotions. This was done in order to obtain evidence on the structure of positive and negative affective states following a combined dimensional/categorical approach to emotion and based on responses to stimuli that are more realistic than the static pictures usually employed in the study of emotion. Affective ratings and self-report measures showed a differential structure of the response to positive and negative films (Experiment 1). While all negative films were rated as low in valence and high in arousal, positive films were differentiated into arousing (happy and pleasure contents) and de-arousing (relax contents) categories. A more complex pattern emerged in Experiment 2, using two psychophysiological measures that are differentially sensitive to the main affective dimensions of valence and arousal, skin conductance response (SCR) and facial electromyography (fEMG). First, high arousal positive and negative films produced larger skin conductance responses. Second, fEMG measures showed differentiated response patterns within the positive and negative film categories. Within the positive category, happy and relaxing films had opposed effects, with happy films increasing and relax films decreasing activity over the zygomaticus muscle region. In the case of negative films, only those eliciting disgust produced a differentiated pattern of fEMG activity characterized by large corrugator responses and a modest increase of zygomatic responses. These results are discussed in relation to the adequacy of the dimensional and categorical approaches to emotion, the usefulness of combining subjective and psychophysiological measures, and the advantages of using realistic, dynamic stimuli for the study of emotion.

Abstract:
This article reappraises Agnès Varda’s formative career as she made Du Côté de la côte in 1958. To do this, it explores Varda’s situation within the post-war French film ecosystem before the French New Wave, how she engaged key practices of that overlooked era. By studying the ways Varda directly cites peer productions in Du Côté de la côte, we reveal her as heir to, and in dialogue with, a number of significant but neglected practitioners, notably women like Nicole Vedrès, Jacqueline Jacoupy and Yannick Bellon. Extrapolating from these creative protocols, we can properly gauge Varda’s primary, and long-term, affinities for short films and essay films, two formats that film studies is often reluctant to recognize, let alone canonize. Nourishing Varda’s work as a post-war short film essayist, we will also discover how applied cinephilia ‐ intertextual deployments of film history that catalyse actual filmmaking ‐ informed Varda’s professional rise.

Abstract:
Jakarta is often, if not regularly, being hit by a natural disaster in a form of floods. Floods have affected not only human but also domestic animals like cats, chickens, and pigeons, especially in Kampung Pulo. There are not many films out there that show the struggles and sufferings of animals during floods which is why author and team decided to make an animated film about it titled “Hanyut”; how are their conditions; how can they survive the events. In the scope of the film preproduction, author decided to focus on character design which is designing the cat family characters in the 2D animation film “Hanyut”. The designs will be limited on character designs for the cat family that consists of the mother cat and her two kittens. Although anthropomorphic, these cat characters can not talk and walk on 4 feet (quadrupedal), but have similar personalities and emotions as human beings. Moreover, the research design will be limited on the drawing style, basic shapes, body proportions, as well as hair and eye colors that will be used on the characters. Data collection for this qualitative research was done by literature reviews, on-site observations, observations on animation films, and surveys about the characters’ appearances to be used during the character designing process. By doing this research, the writer wants to create the cat family corresponding to the story plot and can attract people’s sympathy with the characters’ characterizations.

Abstract:
This study used animated film to translate narratives of refugees and mental health into accessible material aimed at enhancing empathy and understanding. It focuses on the use of short animated films in series one and two of the Woven Threads catalogue. Series one shared moments of hope in a refugee’s journey, whilst series two focused on people living with mental health challenges. This research was designed to understand the responses to viewing for people who watch these animations. A mixed-method design was used via an online Qualtrics platform that asked respondents to view two short animated films, one from the refugee series and one from the mental health series. 364 members of the general public viewed and responded to the refugee film and 275 responded to the mental health film. The platform collected both quantitative and qualitative data. Survey responses indicated that the majority of viewers found the films challenged public misconceptions about refugees and individuals with mental health challenges and left them with a feeling of hopefulness. Qualitative narratives were organised into one superordinate theme: the power of film as a knowledge translation strategy, with four subthemes: (i) changing perceptions and inspiring empathy, (ii) enhancing literacy, (iii) highlighting the power of storytelling, and (iv) encouraging hope and a sense of belonging. The use of short animated film as a knowledge translation strategy can enhance our understanding, promote deep reflection, increase empathy and has the potential to lead to social change.

Abstract:
Nanostructure ITO thin films have been deposited on well cleaned glass and silicon substrates using dc magnetron sputtering technique. The ITO films are post annealed in air using a normal heater setup in the temperature range 100 - 400 °C. The ITO film annealed at 300°C exhibited optimum transparency and resistivity values for device applications. The thickness of the ITO thin films is determined using DEKTAK stylus profilometer. The sheet resistance and resistivity of the ITO films were determined using four probe technique. Finally, the optimized nanostructure ITO layers are incorporated on silicon solar cells and the efficiency of the solar cell are found to be in the range 12-14%. Other solar cell parameters such as fill factor(FF), open circuit voltage(Voc),Short circuit current(Isc), series resistance(Rs) and shunt resistance(Rsh) have been determined. The effect of ITO film thickness on silicon solar cells is also observed.

When both SnO2 film and a-Si film with infinite square resistance are deposited on an ITO film, the square resistance of the ITO film notably decreases. This phenomenon is more remarkable, when an ITO film has large square resistance. We believe that the films are composed of spaced crystalline grains. The film resistance is due to crystal boundary scattering carriers. Smaller crystalline grain and greater distance to the crystal boundary lead to fiercer scattering. The crystalline grains of the SnO2 film and a-Si film short-circuit the spaced ITO grains to form bridges so interface electrons can flow trough.
