Abstract:
The ancient texts which survive speak highly of mystery. It is not only inevitable for the human mind to find fascination in mystery. Mystery is at the heart of things. Through wisdom it may be penetrated. We are taught acceptance of mystery, to meditate upon it; to relax and find comfort there, inspiration, succour, confidence.

Abstract:
The element of mystery can be a naturally intriguing component of a mathematics lesson for middle school students. Mystery stories capture students“ interest and attention and contribute to developing critical-reading skills (Crouse and Bassett 1975; Curcio 1982; Scalzitti 1982). When presenting mystery stories within the context of a mathematics lesson, students often ask, “What does this have to do with mathematics?” Significant connections can be made between solving a mystery and solving a mathematics problem that supply a rationale for incorporating mystery stories in the mathematics class. In particular, similarities in the questions a problem solver asks when confronting a problem (Polya 1973) and the questions a detective asks in solving a mystery can be found in figure 1. After solving short mystery stories, students will see the connection between solving a mystery and solving a mathematics problem.

Mystery is not merely a theological or literary category for G. K. Chesterton. It is also instrumental in understanding his conception of the political. The essay demonstrates the political significance of mystery through a close reading of Chesterton's short story ‘The Noticeable Conduct of Professor Chadd’. A comparison with Heidegger's construal of the political will highlight Chesterton's originality.

Abstract:
This paper is a short history to establish the location, era and the main actors involved in the creation of a civilization what is generally known as Gandhara. It also includes a brief history of the Art and Architecture of Gandhara as the main feature and the beauty and mystery associated therein. Limitation of the length of paper will keep our discussion on three main centers as below. Necessary visual evidence is also included to justify the Beauty and the Mystery attached to the art of Gandhara for which this paper is initiated. Fact of the matter is that hundreds of books are written on Gandhara Civilization but this point “Beauty and Mystery of Gandhara” has hardly been addressed. This paper is therefore an attempt to fill the gap long felt by the author and last but not the least this paper is dedicated to the love and affection to the artwork of the monks who produced the Master Pieces of Gandhara, both in Stone and Stucco. The analysis is made according to the existing literature and author's own experience and interpretation. Researcher: A Research Journal of Culture and Society Vol. 3, No. 3, January 2018, Page: 1-12

Abstract:
What is a library? It is easy to envision the ordinary and ubiquitous library that we are all familiar with, but is there more to libraries that is yet to be explored? What is a concept of a library? What do we as architects envision as the design for a library? The Thesis is built upon the idea that Libraries should be designed out of stories, because stories are written in books and books are found in libraries. According to the writer Borges, the concept of a library, is that it is composed of an indefinite and infinite number of galleries, which are connected by vestibules. Anyone in this library can see upper and lower from any galleries and "all are repeated in the same disorder which constitutes an order!" ... The Thesis explores this concept of finding the order through repeated disorders, in another words, a labyrinth. The writer Umberto Eco has said in one of his novels: "How beautiful the world would be if there were a procedure for moving through labyrinths." In search of this "beauty" in the world, through this thesis I have explored and found the procedure for designing a library.

Taylor, Leslie Charles. "The Greatest is Love." FIU Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3661.

Full text
Abstract:
THE GREATEST IS LOVE is a collection of ten short stories showing the painful manifestations of romantic relationships in the lives of contemporary American characters from many walks of life. As in the stories of D.H. Lawrence, these characters are often driven towards what may be bad for them, finding that love overrides their rational thoughts. In “The Mechanic” a woman whose legal career has left her isolated becomes irresistibly attracted to her friend’s ex-husband. Three stories center on one character, Charles, whose early failures both in college and at work lead him to become a detective, only to be tempted to betray his new calling by a woman who leads him astray. As in Italo Calvino’s Difficult Loves, the stories in THE GREATEST IS LOVE combine the pain and comedy of passion. Even when it is challenging, love offers characters irresistible glimmers of hope.

Abstract:
This collection of nine short stories follows Adelia Villalobos and Isidoro Belmonte, two Cuban Americans solving crimes in present-day South Florida. The former best friends have grown apart during college, but when Adelia is drawn into a murder case, the outcome leads Isidoro to return home and the pair to found the unlicensed detective agency, Calle Panadero (Spanish for Baker Street). Their cases explore the underside of many facets of the community, including bigamy, fraud, and criminal organizations. Along the way, they deal with love, death, and family obligations, and arrive at a new understanding of how their destinies are linked. Influenced by Agatha Christie and Jennine Capó Crucet, CALLE PANADERO revolves around protagonists living in a predominantly Hispanic community and the ties that bind them to it and each other. Although each story is a separate narrative, together they depict Adelia and Isidoro’s changing relationship and their individual growth.

Seichō Matsumoto’s works are notable for their “sociality”, the inclusion of real-life elements such as power struggles and the dark side of humanity. Stepping out of the usual bizarre and melodramatic narratives of pre-war detective fiction, Seichō worked to achieve a realistic portrayal of the settings and the mentality of characters to which the general public could relate, which were closer to the reality. However, Seichō did not just throw away the “unpredictable twists and turns” formula, a great emphasis of the orthodox school. He still impressed the readers with the mystery solving process, but at the same time managed to keep the story real. Readers were drawn to Seichō’s crime novels because they could feel the events of crime so close to their life and enjoyed the exquisite design of traps. Furthermore, Seichō had a gift of depicting the mental abnormality hidden in ordinary life, which was benefited from his shrewd observation of human mind. The vivid description of characters became the signature feature of Seichō’s works. Due to the fact that his long-length works, including the famous Suna no Utsuwa and the Trilogy, have been already widely discussed by previous studies, and that only few are centered on the characters of his shorter works, the thesis place its focus on Seichō Matsumoto’s short novels. Six were selected as the main subjects: Amagi Pass, Senzai Koukei, The Woman who Took the Local Paper, The Chase, The Voice and The Face. The purpose of research is to analyze how characters were portrayed in the psychological traps, identify Seichō’s unique perspective on character creation, and investigate the intention for such designs vis-à-vis the social context of his time.

Abstract:
AbstractOn the surface, adopting technology presents itself as a technical issue. Yet, the real challenge of digital transformation in educational contexts necessitates a second-order change to disrupt and realign interconnected systems. A significant component of digital transformation in K-12 schools is an understanding of the unique affordances of digital tools and technologies and how these can be leveraged to align with learning goals and targets to impact teaching and learning in new ways. While there are several models for innovation diffusion and technology adoption in K-12 contexts, they fall short, particularly in describing the nature and interactions of these interconnected systems. These aspects of technology implementation remain a mystery. As a result, efforts to enact change in K-12 organizations often fall short due to a lack of understanding of context, inadequate goal-setting, insufficient professional development and personalized supports to build capacity, and a failure to evaluate progress. In K-12 educational settings, the people, the competencies, and the culture, alongside the strong leadership, resources, and organizational context, are all essential to effect sustainable change. We propose a model for digital transformation that considers all of these factors and interconnected systems.

Abstract:
AbstractThe invisible and congested world of underground utilities (UU) is an indispensable mystery to the general public because their existence is invisible until problems happen. Their growth aligns with the continuous development of cities and the ever-increasing demand for energy and quality of life. To satisfy a variety of modern requirements like emergency or routine repair, safe dig and excavation, monitoring, maintenance, and upscaling of the network, two basic tasks are always required. They are mapping and imaging (where?), and diagnosis (how healthy?). This chapter gives a review of the current state of the art of these two core topics, and their levels of expected survey accuracy, and looks forward to future trends of research and development (Sects. 24.1 and 24.2). From the point of view of physics, a large range of survey technologies is central to imaging and diagnosis, having originated from electromagnetic- and acoustic-based near-surface geophysical and nondestructive testing methods. To date, survey technologies have been further extended by multi-disciplinary task forces in various disciplines (Sect. 24.3). First, it involves sending and retrieving mechanical robots to survey the internal confined spaces of utilities using careful system control and seamless communication electronics. Secondly, the captured data and signals of various kinds are positioned, processed, and in the future, pattern-recognized with a database to robustly trace the location and diagnose the conditions of any particular type of utilities. Thirdly, such a pattern-recognized database of various types of defects can be regarded as a learning process through repeated validation in the laboratory, simulation, and ground-truthing in the field. This chapter is concluded by briefly introducing the human-factor or psychological and cognitive biases, which are in most cases neglected in any imaging and diagnostic work (Sect. 24.4). In short, the very challenging nature and large demand for utility imaging and diagnostics have been gradually evolving from the traditional visual inspection to a new era of multi-disciplinary surveying and engineering professions and even towards the psychological part of human–machine interaction.

Abstract:
What is consciousness? What does it do? Could we have evolved without it? ‘Why the mystery?’ considers the definition of consciousness and how psychologists, neuroscientists, and philosophers have tried to explain it. From the Cartesian dualism of René Descartes to the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness, a phrase coined in 1994 by the Australian philosopher David Chalmers, and the question ‘What is it like to be a bat?’ of American philosopher Thomas Nagel, it is shown that there is no generally agreed definition of consciousness. Subjectivity (or phenomenality), qualia, and the ideas of philosopher Daniel Dennett are also discussed.

Abstract:
The sources of short gamma ray bursts (GRBs) have been identified with neutron star merger events. Hulse and Taylor discovered the first binary neutron star in 1974. By monitoring the pulsar in this system the orbital characteristics of the system have been determined with great accuracy. This has led to tests of general relativity, including the first confirmation of the existence of gravitational waves. The emission of this radiation is gradually bringing the two neutron stars together. They will collide and merge in about 300 million years.

Abstract:
The fourth gravitational wave signal detected by LIGO GW170817 coincided with a short gamma ray burst and these signals have been interpreted as the result of a binary neutron star merger. It is thought that gold and other heavy elements are produced in binary neutron star collisions and the GW170817 event has provided support for this idea. Further evidence that heavy elements are produced in extremely rare events such as binary neutron star mergers has been deduced from the scarcity of these elements in dwarf galaxies. The Reticulum II dwarf galaxy is an exceptional case that does contain heavy elements that might have been created in a single such event.

Abstract:
The Introduction explains that we now understand psychopathy as a personality disorder characterized by lack of empathy and guilt, manipulation of other people, a tendency to make bafflingly destructive life choices, and, in the case of criminal psychopathy, capacity for premeditated violent behaviour. It highlights that recent research into psychopathy has provided much information, but a lot also remains a mystery and a focus of continued research efforts. Key questions to be considered in the chapters that follow include: Is psychopathy a genetic condition? Do people become psychopaths because of their childhood experiences? How can we understand their behaviour? What are the warning signs of someone who is at risk of developing psychopathy? Can psychopathy be prevented or treated? Are all psychopaths criminals?

Abstract:
“Colonizations” charts the invasions and dislocations experienced on an unprecedented scale by the Maya peoples since the sixteenth century. The Maya area is carved up among five nation-states—Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. Agricultural centers such as Guatemala experienced slavery and exploitation in the nineteenth century, and in the latter half of the twentieth century, Mayas in Guatemala were subject to a campaign of violence and genocide. Their mystery has long entranced scholars of the Maya, giving rise to some extreme theories, including extraterrestrial involvement in Maya civilization. However, Maya history is a story not only of victimization, but also of adaptation and survival.
