Abstract:
Understanding the structure of a short story composition is very important for elementary school students. Through this structure, it will greatly help students in the future in world education because the structure of an essay will bring students to understanding written work. So far, students in making short story essays have ignored the intrinsic elements, it is very unfortunate if there are ideas to make essays but they are not arranged systematically. Through the learning material to make short stories, it is hoped that students can always pour their thoughts into a written work, but in fact, students can understand the material that is currently obtained because of the current learning system through long distances. This research is here to analyze the short story essays of the fourth-grade students of SDN Cilincing 05, North Jakarta City. This research will focus on the intrinsic elements contained in students' short story essays, including the theme, the plot of the place, the timeline, and the mandate contained in the short story essay written by students. Then the data goes through the data reduction process, traffic is in the form of tables in order to make it easier for understanding in understanding the content of the research. The data that has been obtained is then analyzed by researchers using content analysis research methods. Content analysis is certainly the right method for this research because content analysis reveals the meaning of a text. From the research that has been done, teaching materials are obtained to write short stories by paying attention to the intrinsic elements to make it easier for students to make essays

Abstract:
Aldous Huxley wrote about education all his life. Most of his books of non-fiction contain essays that scrutinize problems in education and propose solutions, while his novels and short stories are full of characters that embody the peculiarities of various educational systems. This article will show that the majority of educational flaws that Huxley highlighted in his essays were first depicted in his short fiction, especially his criticism of conservative teaching methods, self-education and spiritual homeschooling, and so-called intellectual education that lacks a practical dimension and draws a sharp distinction between emotions and rationality. This analysis will also prove that some characters in Huxley’s short stories embody progressive teaching styles that were promoted at the time by Maria Montessori and John Dewey, educators Huxley praised in his essays on education, although he had reservations about their followers.

Abstract:
In teaching Southeast Asian literature in English in Thailand, a lecturer presented a brief historical background of each country. After lecturing on each country’s literature background, the students were assigned to write the reflection essays on short stories studied in class. Then, a lecturer summarized the issues discussed in class and from students’ reflection essays. This article is resulted from the case study of teaching modern Southeast Asian Literary Works in English at IAC international studies ASEAN-CHINA program, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat university, Thailand. A lecturer and students discovered gender and political issues in Laotian, Burmese and Vietnamese short stories. Laotian and Vietnamese short stories A Bar at the Edge of Cemetery and The Khaki Coat represent writers’ attitudes towards their communist/socialist government. Laos and Vietnam share social problems such as poverty-famine, economic inequality and class struggle. Additionally, Laotian, Burmese and Vietnamese short stories also portray gender issues such as gender inequality, women’s liberation movements, and the effects of war on women.

Kieślowski scholar Joseph G. Kickasola documents his efforts to find and explore the Warsaw apartment complex where Krzysztof Kieślowski filmed his Decalogue series. His startling, unexpectedly emotional experience at such an ordinary place becomes an opportunity to reflect on the films, theorize on the function of place in them, and consider the way that human life and cinema feed into each other. Fictional stories and their cinematic constructions can deepen our experience, and make the world feel more lived in, more true. Nothing magical happened, but everything ordinary happened in all its fullness, like a kind of prophecy, fulfilled.

Abstract:
Abstract Much has been written on Zelda Fitzgerald as F. Scott Fitzgerald's muse and as a victim of mental illness. Her novel, Save Me the Waltz, and even her artwork have received critical attention, but little scholarship has focused on her short stories. In this essay, I reengage one of the few but first essays on her stories—W. R. Anderson's “Rivalry and Partnership: The Short Fiction of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald” (1977)—and argue that we can trace her growth as a serious writer most apparently when juxtaposing “A Millionaire's Girl” with “Miss Ella.” This essay provides a bio-critical reading to suggest that in the short, yet difficult, months between the publication of “A Millionaire's Girl” and “Miss Ella,” she started to gain a voice of her own.

Abstract:
In this research paper, I analyze the effects of institutionalised ways of reading ‘gender’ and ‘caste’ in Marathi literature with reference to Baburao Bagul, one of the important Dalit writers, short stories with the help of some notions and arguments from Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks, Jacques Derrida’s essay “Structure, Sign and Play in the Discourse of Human Sciences”, Aniket Jaaware’s essay “Destitute Literature” and the book Practicing Caste: On Touching and Not Touching. Baburao Bagul’s short stories re-valuated the established institutionalized reading practices of gender and caste in literature set by the Marathi writers and critics, mostly upper-caste, before the 1960s. However, other Dalit writers did not venture to re-valuate the representation of gender and caste in literature. Before the concept of ‘Destitute Literature’ was propounded by Aniket Jaaware, most of the reading/analysis of Marathi Dalit literature followed institutionalized ways of consumption of literature. The dominant practices of reading literature in academia as well as out of it did not spare even the scholars who claimed to be different from the hegemony. The descriptions and analysis of gender and caste were mostly on the grounds of identity politics. For example, all the essays in the Marathi book Samagra Lekhak: Baburao Bagul (Complete Writer: Baburao Bagul) edited by Dr. Krushna Kirwale offer the institutionalized readings of Bagul’s stories, their form, content, and the characters. I attempt to critique such earlier writings and criticism written on Baburao Bagul’s stories and re-read the stories in destitutionalised way.

Abstract:
This essay looks at Elizabeth Bowen's presence in The Bell during the war years. She contributed an essay, a short story, two pieces of memoir, two obituaries, and a few other, smaller pieces to the magazine, but also featured in an interview, several reviews, and O'Faoláin's editorials and critical essays. Yet, as a Protestant, Anglo-Irish woman writer living in England, Bowen was in many ways an odd presence in The Bell, which squarely focused on Irish life and Irish writing. While O'Faoláin's mission to present an inclusive view of Ireland may explain his publication of Bowen's autobiographical essays, her prominence as a fiction writer can better be accounted for through her achievements in the modern short story, the genre O'Faoláin sought to promote as a central Irish literary form in The Bell. Indeed, although Bowen's short stories have been classified as ‘modernist’ and O'Faoláin's as ‘realist’, their aesthetics of the short story are remarkably similar. Still, The Bell’s championing of Bowen's short fiction as a model to follow was undermined by its framing of Bowen as an ‘aristocratic’ writer whose literary snapshots of Irish life had a peculiarly dated and blinkered quality.

Hudson, Roberta T. "A Collection of Essays and Short Stories." VCU Scholars Compass, 2016. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4216.

Full text
Abstract:
The following thesis is composed of two parts: a collection of nonfiction essays and a collection of short stories. All of the works collected here were completed during my four years of study at VCU. The nonfiction essays are part of a larger memoir concerning my family’s ancestral farm in Powhatan County, Virginia. They deal with the history of that farm, its legacies (both emotional and physical), the people who have lived there during the past three hundred years, my attempts to find freedom from the burden of history, and an exploration of the ephemeral nature of all things. The short story collection is based on experiences and people I have encountered during my many travels to St. Petersburg, Russia. They are largely concerned with how ordinary people are affected by that country’s current social and political climate, and the universality of human experience

Rawlinson, Barbara. "The other Gissing : short stories, essays and miscellaneous works." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/30275.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how, over three separate phases, George Gissing transformed his relatively unremarkable early short stories into the uniquely individualistic tales that elevated his work in the eighteen nineties to the front rank of realistic short fiction. Chapters one and two relate to Gissing's first venture into short fiction whilst living in America, which is notable for its accumulation of important themes that the author carried forward and repeatedly adapted to reappear in his later work. In order to establish its impact on subsequent work in terms of political and philosophical influence, chapter three studies the writer's non-fictional output following his return to England, while chapters four and five cover the same period with regard to his second phase of short fiction, focusing on causality as the dominating theme at this time. The role of realism in Gissing's short work is addressed in chapter six and in chapter seven its application is demonstrated by means of an overview of the author's third phase of the genre. Chapter eight focuses on Gissing's writings on the work of Charles Dickens, while chapter nine follows a similar analytical pattern to chapters two and five. At this stage it is evident that the author's interest in the concept of causality as the major force in his short work has been overtaken by a more challenging preoccupation with the human psyche, thus introducing philosophical, sociological and psychological overtones to the writer's work. The final chapter aims to draw together all the threads that combined to establish Gissing as a major contributor to late nineteenth-century realism in the field of short fiction.

Bull, Edward. "POTENTIAL ENERGY." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2010. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2192.

Full text
Abstract:
BULL, EDWARD. Potential Energy. (Under the direction of Pat Rushin.) Potential Energy is a collection of sixteen short stories. They range from the fictional to the autofictional to the entirely non-fictional. In all of them, characters both real and imagined struggle to live and define themselves in a world that is outside their control. They cope with the inevitability of loss, dangers both internal and external, and the passing of their own greatness. Some of these characters become lost while others learn to embrace life on its own terms to accept  without hope or expectation. More often, they are not lost or enlightened, but simply survive to continue on, still uncertain. Though all the stories in Potential Energy are stand-alone, they are thematically connected. The themes of family and identity are most prominent in  Potential Energy and  Eulogy to Maria Mamani, Fire-Eater. Loss is confronted and the question of what comes next is asked in  Oysters and  Slide. The conflict between fate and the need for control rises to the surface in  Threshold,  The Elizabeth Years, and the non-fiction story of Charles Whitman s deadly rampage in 1966,  Seed. Themes of ambiguity, moral erosion, and literary exploitation appear in the non-fiction  Bright and Loud and Then Gone, about a landlord burned alive in Chicago in 2008, and  What It Might Have Been Like If We Had Been There, an apologetic for the writer s right to write inspired by the 2007 Al Mutanabbi Street car-bombing in Baghdad, Iraq. Most importantly all the content of Potential Energy tells stories of people trying to hold on to what is good when, tragically, everything must eventually come to an end.

Broaddus, Jessica Allerton. "Where Light Is: a collection of short stories & The Definition of Snow: a chapbook." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77484.

Full text
Abstract:
Where Light Is and The Definition of Snow are linked manuscripts in which a world is held in lyrical suspension. In the process of speaking alongside one another, the stories and poems in these collections explore the repercussions of grief, loss, and loneliness and how these are affected by relationships and gender dynamics. “A Feeling" gives voice to the female narrator’s sense of disembodiment in “Series of Doors." “Fishtails" and “At Watch" probe into the kind of complex familial relationships brought about through addiction and loss, just like the young girls’ relationships with their parents in “All Around Us" and “Vesuvian Summer." Throughout these collections, the genres are connected by form. Modes overlap, allowing lyric stories to speak alongside narrative poems. There is an attempt to fuse interior and exterior landscapes, a desire to rework memory, to hold on to something already acknowledged as being lost. These stories and poems meet in a space of simultaneous loneliness and illumination: where bad things are about to happen, but beauty is still insistent.

Olson, Ted, and James Still. "The Hills Remember: The Complete Short Stories of James Still (Edited Volume, with New Introductory Essay)." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2012. https://www.amzn.com/0813136237.

Full text
Abstract:
James Still remains one of the most beloved and important writers in Appalachian literature. Best known for his acclaimed novel River of Earth (1940), the Alabama native and adopted Kentuckian left an enduring legacy of novels, stories, and poems during his nearly seventy year career. The Hills Remember: The Complete Short Stories of James Stillhonors the late writer by collecting all of Still's short stories, including his stories from On Troublesome Creek (1941), Pattern of a Man and Other Stories (1976), and The Run for the Elbertas(1980), as well as twelve prose pieces originally published as short stories and later incorporated into River of Earth. Also included are several lesser-known stories and ten never-before-published stories. Recognized as a significant writer of short fiction in his day―many of his stories initially appeared in The Atlantic and The Saturday Evening Post and were included in The O. Henry Memorial Award Stories and The Best American Short Stories collections―Still's short stories, while often overshadowed in recent years by his novels and poetry, are among his most enduring literary works. Editor Ted Olson offers a reassessment of Still's short fiction within the contexts of the author's body of work and within Appalachian and American literature. Compiling all of James Still's compelling and varied short stories into one volume, The Hills Remember is a testament to a master writer.

Guidry, Cameron J. "Pieces| A Collection of Short Stories and an Essay on Humor as a Source of Engagement in Fiction." Thesis, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10268796.

Full text
Abstract:

Humor is an ever-present aspect of American Literature, and, in particular, short fiction. While the construction of the comedic has been studied and broken down into its constituent parts, the reasons for its application are less studied and understood. This dissertation examines the application of humor and the comedic in the works of American writers: Raymond Carver, Flannery O’Connor, George Saunders, and Denis Johnson in order to gain understanding about the decision to include humor in a variety of their works. The goal of the critical introduction portion of Pieces is to illustrate the use of comedy as a means of creating engagement in works of short fiction, which may be less engaging as a matter of plot or character, and then to come to a conclusion about the decisions these authors make about humor while writing. The creative portion of Pieces is a collection of short fiction, which attempts to illustrate the same comedic application.

Abstract:
This study is about the ways and devices of the construction of subjectivity in autobiographical genres and fictional texts, investigating how it is the writing about the self. From plain autobiographical texts by Caio Fernando Abreu such as letters, we go to tenuous forms such as the essays and short stories, which intertwine fiction and subjectivity, experience and invention. This way, we studied how the subject becomes the center of events and starts writing about what affects his mind, body, feelings and thoughts, either in a real or objective report of events or in a "embellishment of what was lived and invented. The intention is to explore, in Caio Fernando Abreus biographical and literary spaces, the intertwining of life and writing, and the possibilities of writing himself in his letters, organized by Italo Moriconi, in Cartas (2002), in the compilation of essays Pequenas Epifanias (2006), and in the short stories in Ovelhas Negras (1995)

Abstract:
In this chapter, Piera Rossetto discusses the use of the fragment as ethical and aesthetic practice in working with difficult memories. The idea of an "AesthEt(h)ics of the fragment" is elaborated, drawing inspiration from two artistic practices: an exhibition dedicated to the 1938 census of the Jews in Milan, Italy, and a short documentary film of objects that survived their owners who drowned in the Mediterranean. Framed by Rothberg's conceptualization of memory as "multidirectional" and in recent shifts in map studies, the chapter illustrates some examples of creative maps produced in the context of research-creation practices. These creative maps chart the stories of the interviewees' as well as the position of the researcher in relation to them. The chapter is complemented by two visual essays that allow the reader to experience an "immersive form of knowing" and to grasp both the magnitude of the (tragic) events and the unique fragments that constitute them.

Abstract:
The Slovenian-Bosnian poet, writer, essayist, literary critic, translator and editor Josip Osti (1945–2021) was born in Sarajevo, lived and worked in Slovenia since 1990. Being a recognized poet in his homeland, writing in Croatian, one of the largest translators of Slovenian literature into Serbo-Croatian, since 1997 he has been writing in Slovenian. The transcultural aspects of Josip Osti’s literary works, both poetry collections and novels, are a unique phenomenon. In our study, we turned to the novels of Josip Osti, namely his trilogy — Ghosts of the House of Heinrich Böll (2016), In Front of the Mirror (2016) and Life is a Creepy Fairy Tale (2019). All three works have a strong (auto)biographical component and form a special novel form, which the author calls the “kaleidoscope-mosaic” novel. The latter has a fragmented structure and consists of short stories, life stories, anecdotes, urban legends, essayistic notes, literary-critical digressions, lyrical passages, diary entries, etc. In Osti’s novels, we also find a connection with the tradition of short prose in Bosnian-Herzegovina literature, in particular, with the works of the 1990s by such authors as M. Jergović, D. Karahasan, N. Veličković, K. Zaimović and others. Their texts are characterized by a destabilized genre form, a mosaic narrative, personal and documentary evidence, and a palimpsest narrative model. The kaleidoscopic structure of Osti’s prose texts helps him to reflect the transcultural view characteristic of his intimate and artistic world, to embrace the complex overlap of heterogeneous elements. The novels are written in Slovene, but they are mainly devoted to the space of Sarajevo, the unique multicultural atmosphere of this city, as well as the tragedy unfolding in it; thus, the writer complements the so-called “Sarajevo text”, but already in the field of Slovenian literature, artistically comprehending the interconnectedness of Bosnia and Slovenia. Abstract:
Automated essay scoring (AES) is the task of automatically assigning scores (i.e., grades) to written texts. Although AES has been widely studied in the literature (e.g., informational and argumentative essays), specific types of texts still need more attention. Narrative essays are characterized by texts describing personal experiences and stories, either real or fictional. In this work, we describe a study on scoring student essays written in Portuguese under the aspect of Formal Register, which evaluates aspects related to the use of Brazilian Portuguese formal grammar and proficiency. The dataset created in this study provides a rich corpus of narrative essays produced in the context of a motivational situation, with a diverse set of language proficiency levels annotated by two professional graders. Different machine learning algorithms were evaluated using a diverse set of handcrafted linguistic features, and their results were compared against manual scores by the two human annotators. The results of the proposed analysis demonstrated that the AES model proposed achieved an equivalent agreement to that of the two human annotators.

Abstract:
Victorian Ghosts 1852-1907 is a collection of Victorian Ghost Stories collated and annotated by scholars at York University enrolled in the fourth-year Victorian Ghosts course offered through the department of English during Fall 2020. Starting with Elizabeth Gaskell’s “The Old Nurse’s Story” (1852)—a staple of many Victorian Ghost Story Anthologies—and ending with Ambrose Bierce’s “The Moonlit Road” (1907), this collection includes 21 ghost stories spanning six decades. Each story includes a short introduction and explanatory notes. This is supplemented by accompanying essays that helps guide readers through the anthology.

Abstract:
This paper explores the potential of using cloud-based mind maps as a tool for learning foreign languages. It is concluded that their use is suitable for both language classes and students’ independent work. Criteria have been developed for evaluating cloud services in terms of their effectiveness in the educational process of creating mind maps. The paper characterises the conditions for accessing free versions of 16 cloud services for creating mind maps. Based on an experimental study, five cloud services are compared: Ayoa, Mindomo, Miro, Smartdraw, and Xmind. The paper demonstrates examples of using mind maps based on these cloud services’ templates for various types of language learning activities, including studying grammar topics, learning or repeating vocabulary, and writing essays. The paper identifies several advantages of using mind maps, such as visualising lexical material, structuring terminology by sector, enabling control and self-control in checking listening and reading comprehension, and serving as support for writing essays and composing oral stories.
