Abstract:
Analysis and interpretation of the short stories by Indonesian female writer Intan Paramaditha (Intan Paramaditha, born in 1979) make it possible to understand that her writing occupies a special niche in the modern Indonesian literary paradigm. Paramaditha’s feminist texts are disguised as horror stories with settings in contemporary Indonesia. The article examines five short stories (“Spinner of Darkness” (Pemintal Kegelapan), “Vampire” (Vampir), “Polaroid’s Mystery” (Misteri Polaroid), “The Blind Woman without a Toe” (Perempuan Buta tanpa Ibu Jari), and “The Obsessive Twist” (Goyang Penasaran)). Using the intertextual method, it was possible to prove the gothic poetics of these literary works. The short stories contain the mosaic of folklore-mythological motives from the Malay Archipelago, Biblical and Quranic narratives, as well as European fairy tales and allusions to American horror fiction and horror films. Her prose is built upon some borrowed European literary forms for expression of authentic Indonesian content. The social themes are intertwined with feminist criticism that is presented as a Kitsch of the Indonesian mass culture. In “The Obsessive Twist” the main conflict is focused on the heated debates on sexuality, politics, violence, and religion. The feminist agenda of her prose is contrasted with the turn of contemporary Indonesia towards a Muslim patriarchal society. Paramaditha’s works represent a unique product of West-East-synthesis aimed not only at the Indonesian, but also the global audience.

Boltwood, Scott. "‘Mildly Eccentric’: Brian Friel's Writings for the Irish Times and the New Yorker." Irish University Review 44, no. 2 (November 2014): 305–22. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/iur.2014.0126.

Abstract:
The conventional view of Brian Friel's career portrays him as a struggling writer whose first stories appeared in the New Yorker in late 1959. After briefly producing a small body of finely crafted, albeit conventional, short stories, he devoted himself to writing plays full-time after the phenomenal success of Philadelphia, Here I Come! (1964). This traditional interpretation of Friel's career also relies upon the assertion that the young writer also turned away from prose because of his inability to break free of the genre's constricting conventions, which were imposed both by foreign editors demanding nostalgic portrayals of rural Ireland and, as first argued by Ulf Dantanus, by Friel's own ‘failure to free himself’ from the influence of Frank O'Connor. This article challenges our view of Friel's early career in several ways. First and foremost, it uncovers a trove of seventy six previously unknown ‘essay/stories’ that he wrote for The Irish Times between September 1957 and May 1962, short experimental pieces that force the reader to question her/his assumptions about the form and content of Friel's early career. Second, when contextualized among his uncollected stories for the New Yorker and the Irish Press, we recognize a radically different story writer than previously described in the criticism.

Abstract:
The article deals with the comprehension of the features of perception of works of American prose writer John William Cheever (1912-1982) by Korney Chukovsky. The appearance of the works of J. Cheever in Russian language was accompanied by the comments of Soviet researchers who considered him to be an active propagandist of socialist ideas. Literary critical works written by Korney Chukovsky provoked a more thoughtful reading of the works of the American writer by Russian readers. Korney Chukovsky is the author of the preface to the collection of short stories written by J. Cheever in translations of Tat’yana Litvinova entitled «Giant Radio» published in 1962. In the future, this introduction, with amendments and additions, was published as an article of «John Cheever». The American writer’s work perception by Korney Chukovsky of was not unique. He criticised the fi rst collection of short stories by J. Cheever «The Way Some People Live» (1943), for his student imitation of the recognisable style of predecessor writers. Korney Chukovsky believed that the best stories of J. Cheever were collected in the book «The Enormous Radio and other stories» (1953), the central themes of which were the imperfection of the social structure and the causes that caused it social inequality of people, their spiritual devastation. Analysing the stories of J. Cheever, Korney Chukovsky noted a signifi cant detail – despite the seeming impartial attitude towards his heroes in trouble, J. Cheever empathises them, wants to draw public attention to important problems of our time.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: A famous literary critic and writer, representative of the “Moloda Muza” group, B. Lepky was published in numerous Ukrainian and foreign journals in the early twentieth century. Today, his cooperation with Polish and German editions has been partially explored, but the Czech direction remains almost unclear. There are only individual references to B. Lepky's cultural publications in the “Slovanský přehled” journal in the works of V. Doroshenko, V. Lev, B. Rubchak. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to analyze the interpretative bases of B. Lepky's publications in “Slovanský přehled”, namely, five annual reviews of Ukrainian literature (1901, 1902, 1903, 1905, 1906) and three cultural pieces of knowledge: about the composer M. Lysenko, about the translation of short stories by M. Kotsiubynsky into Polish, and the scientific works of M. Hrushevsky, B. Barvinsky and V. Shchurat. Results: B. Lepky followed I. Franko in editing “Slovanský přehled” journal. I. Franko prepared the ground for the Czechs to familiarize them with Ukrainian literature. In a series of annual reviews, B. Lepky considered Ukrainian literature in the pan-European context, translating the realities of national culture into the language of universal cultural concepts. Not contradicting realism and modernism, the critic appraised the high artistic value of the works by Lesya Ukrainka, V. Stefanyk, M. Kotsyubynsky, O. Kobylyanska, which were marked by modern stylistic trends. Trying to convey the original content to the foreign reader, B. Lepky approached his critical speech to the poetic one, painting it with impressionistic strokes and symbolic imagery. The author concluded that the importance of B. Lepky’s Czech publications was important for understanding the ways in which Ukrainian writing was modernized and contextualized in Slavic and pan-European culture in the early twentieth century. Key words: Modernism period, literary process, critical writing, literary review, review, contextualization, impressionism, symbolism.

Abstract:
In his work Truth and Truthfulness, Bernard Williams offers a very different interpretation of philosophical genealogy than that expounded in the secondary literature. The “Received View” of genealogy holds that it is “documentary grey”: it attempts to provide historically well-supported, coherent, but defeasible explanations for the actual transformation of practices, values, and emotions in history. However, paradoxically, the standard interpretation also holds another principle. Genealogies are nevertheless polemical because they admit that any evidence that would serve to justify a genealogical account is indexical to a perspective. In short, genealogies are not true per se. This view of genealogy leaves it vulnerable to three criticisms. I call these three: (1) the reflexive, (2) the substantive, and (3) the semantic. In contrast, Williams argues that all genealogies provide a functional account for the manifestation of something and further, that a State of Nature story subtends these accounts. The upshot of Williams’ approach is that it makes for strange philosophical bedfellows. For example, Nietzsche’s account for the rise of Christian morality shares methodological features with Hobbes’ functional explanation for the emergence of civilization and yet Nietzsche seems to take issue with genealogists who are hypothesis mongers gazing haphazardly into the blue. In the following article, I flesh out, more fully, how to make sense of Williams’ novel reclassification of genealogy. I show that Nietzsche’s genealogies are State of Nature stories and, just like Hobbes’ State of Nature story in chapter thirteen of Leviathan, are subtended by our collective corporeality. I then demonstrate how Nietzsche’s three stories in the Genealogy, when brought together, serve to undermine what Williams refers to as “… a new system (of reasons)—which very powerfully resists being understood in such terms …” Finally, I explain how my reconstruction of Williams’ interpretation of the genealogy immunizes it against the three criticisms noted above.

Abstract:
This research is devoted to H.Kortasar’s short story «Сontinuity of parks». The relevance of the topic is connected with the possibility to make a multidimensional analysis. The aim of the research is to demonstrate great importance of linguistic analysis of a short story for the revealing of its meaning. In the Introduction a short description of the structure of the story is given. There are two plans, two realities which exist parallel to each other and at the end they meet. The main character of the story «Сontinuity of parks» is the victim of the character of the novel read by him. The second part of the article is devoted to the short view of the literature criticism of this piece of work. The main attention is given to the phenomenon of metallepsis, the notion of chronotope, the category of myth and connection of this piece of work with H. L. Borhes’s works. The author of the article also pays attention to H. Kortasar’s aesthetic concept connected with the phenomenon of «reader-female» and the author’s view on a literature piece of work from the viewpoint of «play». The relevance of «interaction between key moments of the text» and a reader’s experience. The third part of the article gives a linguistic analysis of some elements of the story including nominalization and ontological metaphor. The author gives a detailed analysis of lexeme and phrase dibujo (drawing, outline), el dibujo de los personajes (outline, character sketch), ilusióni (illusion), intrusion (intrusion), continuidad (continuity). As a result the author makes following conclusions. As in many other stories H. Kortasar in «Continuity of parks» involves the reader in the narration, gives a riddle to him which can’t be solved from the viewpoint of formal logics. The intrigue of the narration, its «its inner structure» is implemented because of great opportunities of Spanish. The interpretation of an open end in some literature works of postmodern period is the main task of the reader who becomes а «co-author» of the text.

Abstract:
- What meaning has the Enlightenment in relationship to modernity and progress of the human spirit? This question is the main theme of the historiographic work of Bronislaw Baczko, whose thought is revisited by Michel Porret in the short introductory essay to the article of the polish intellectual. Porret captures the central essence of Baczko's work, in which he recognizes in the century of Voltaire the roots of modern political thought. Through his studies of intellectual, cultural and political history of the eighteenth century, the polish historian renewed the way of interpreting the heritage of the Enlightenment. In fact, he causes a break with the historiographic tradition by emphasizing that the symbolic, philosophical and legal apparatus that the French Revolution of 1789 inherited from the Enlightenment, is the premise to the invention of democracy. Porret highlights Bazcko's interpretation of this cultural and political project beginning with Rousseau's criticism of eighteenth century's thought and society. The Genevan philosopher provided cultural, linguistic and political tools to the Revolution, which, in turn, elaborated a new political language through the dialect between «exercise of power» and «collective imagination». According to Porret, from this «imagination» that intertwines politics and society and represents its power through symbolic spaces such as the Panthéon and other monuments, Bazcko conceived the idea of utopia as a «mental horizon» that gives meaning to the expectations of the community and which imposes on democracy its continuing institutional reform. The conclusions of Porret tend to emphasize that the polish historian is not disenchanted towards the moral responsibilities of those who make history. According to Bazcko, to examine «modern political myths», born with the Enlightenment, means to give meaning to «our democratic culture rooted in our egalitarian imagination» and to the ethical role of the historian.Key words: the Enlightenment, Rousseau, revolution, progress, modernity, utopia, imagination, democracy.Parole chiave: Illuminismo, Rousseau, rivoluzione, progresso, modernità, utopia, immaginario, democrazia.

Abstract:
Abstract Contrary to what might be expected, a Canadian literature in Spanish translation already exists and, expectedly, Margaret Atwood is one of the most translated writers. All her novels except Life Before Man, as well as three of her collections of short stories and three of her poetry collections have been translated into Spanish. Her work has received excellent reviews in Spain which have also praised her translators. This essay focuses on my own experience translating Atwood’s poetry–her collection Power Politics (Juegos de poder, 2000)–into Spanish, in an approach which compares my own project of translation or “projet-de-traduction,” as formulated by Antoine Berman, with that of the other translations of her poetry into Spanish. Being a university teacher and a researcher in Canadian literature, and not a specialist in Translation Studies, my approach is necessarily pragmatic and not theoretical. Bearing in mind Barbara Folkart’s contention that poetry is a cognitive activity and the multiplicity of interpretations that the poems offer, in which the feminist one is prominent, I tried to produce a translation which was as close as possible to the original characteristics of Atwood’s poetry in its tone, lineation and imagistic dimension. The first steps were the stylistic analysis, which resulted in a rhetorical study of the poems, and then the review of the existing criticism about the poems. The main problems which arose during the translation were related to the political and feminist connotations of the poems. If the political context is crucial in Power Politics, the cultural background is vital in The Journals of Susanna Moodie, although it has been erased in its Spanish version (Los diarios de Susanna Moodie, 1991, by Lidia Taillefer and Álvaro García). This is not an unusual phenomenon, since translation consists in an often insurmountable paradox which is formulated in the lines by Margaret Atwood quoted in the title of this article: trying to formulate the same idea in two languages which function differently and have completely different cultural contexts.

Abstract:
Kitab Pembebasan is Eko Prasetyo’s first work in the field of interpretation contains the stories of prophets and friends in the Qur'an. For him, the stories of the prophets no longer have the power to change circumstances, then progressive logic brings Eko to an interpretation of the stories of the prophet to the surrounding social problems. When many commentators who interpret the Quran relate to the social community, then interpreting the Quran leads to social criticism being unique to discuss. So this paper is focused on discussing social criticism in the Book of Liberation. In this paper, there are indications of the content of social criticism Eko Prasetyo then grouped them into five fields, namely economics, religion, education, politics and society. Then explained based on the theme specifically. Then develop social criticism based on each theme. Among them is a criticism of the economic system of capitalism, interpretation of the meaning of Satan, tyranny, seditious and idolatrous, religious and financiers, criticism of Suharto and the New Order, the case of the murderous activist Salim deer. Also, Eko's other works were reviewed to develop his criticisms. The interpretation for Eko through the Book of Liberation is the contextualization of the problems that occur around him, Eko does not care about the interpretation of the interpretation, because for Eko, the Qur'an is a book of movements that must be practiced.Keyword: Eko Prasetyo, Progressive Interpretations, Qissah, al-Qur’an

Abstract:
Abstract This critical essay examines the literary and linguistic features of two short stories by Mercé Rodoreda, the best-known Catalan woman writer of the twentieth century. Chosen from among others published together under the general title of La meva Cristina i altres contes (My Christina and other stories), these are thought to be fairly representative of the style and content of the collection as a whole. Written under the infl uence of Ovid, Joyce, Kafk a, Sartre and the Symbolists, the author mingles direct and indirect styles and uses ‘monologue’ as an alternative to narration in the third person to delineate the character of their protagonists through the medium of speech with another person who cannot (as in La Mainadera) and probably does not (in Amor) respond. The result is an evocative, lyrical prose as important for what it says as for how it says it. Ingenuity of expression and interpretation, malice in the choice of its elements, insinuation and irony are its chief characteristics.

Abstract:
Currently, a complete critical edition must not only be accompanied by a rigorous textual criticism but also by a genetic edition that considers all the testimonies. In this sense, this work analyzes some of the problems that could occur if we publish a critical edition the entirety of Mauricio Magdaleno’s short stories. There would be two important problems: first, the fact that most of the stories, as we know them today, had previous versions published in periodical sources, which would oblige us to make an exhaustive investigation and to gather and collate the texts from the varied hemerographic testimonies; second, the decision of any criterion that allows overcoming the generic border between a story written from a personal anecdote and a short story that can be included in our edition. Thus, both problems have as a common root: Magdaleno was a journalist and supplemented his journalistic career with other activities that served as material support. A critical edition of Mauricio Magdaleno’s short stories would be a good reading of his work, and we could know about the author’s creative process, which would help to overcome the anachronistic criticism that has been published on the topic. Finally, and based on the current status, we propose a table with the versions of the short stories found and another table with a proposal supported by a possible index of the short stories that would make up the critical edition.

Abstract:
First Love, Last Rites, a collection of short stories by Ian McEwan was published in 1975. This was the first work written by McEwan that consist eight short stories with estranged and perplexed themes. Ian McEwan received a mixed reaction of criticism as well as appreciation by the readers. The stories are usually of fifteen to twenty pages with the following titles – “Solid Geometry”, “Homemade”, “Last Day of Summer”, “Cocker at the Theatre”, “Butterflies”, “Conversation with a Cupboard Man” and “First Love, Last Rites” and “Disguise”. The author has also included a short story named after the title of his collection. There are numerous aspects in the stories where either the narrators or the protagonists talk about their suppressed emotions or fulfilled desires without being concerned about the societal norms and environment around them. This paper will analyse eight short stories of McEwan in light of the psychoanalytical terms, ‘Id Domination’ and ‘Abreaction’.

The study attempted to meet the following objectives: 1) to describe the images of women as depicted by the authors in the stories; 2) to identify the dominant devices used in the stories; and, 3) to determine the feminist themes conveyed in the stories. Through examining and analyzing the short stories, different images of women were discovered. The close textual reading resulted in the researcher’s coming up with the following findings: female characters are portrayed as involved, sophisticated, strong-minded, competitive, independent and unconventional. The dominant devices are symbols, juxtaposition, foreshadowing, imagery, idiom, metaphor, irony and figures of speech were effectively utilized in the stories to probe the images of women that are found in each story. Abstract:
Mahmud Taymur was one of the founders of the Egyptian realistic short story, also known as Syaikh al-Qisasah alQashīrah. Remaining productive over a long life Taymur wrote extensive literary criticism and was the author of short stories, novellas, and plays totaling a score of volumes. Most notable for his skill in characterization, he achieved a literary eminence shared by few other Arabs of his generation in Cairo in 1947, and individual stories by him gave and appeared widely in English and European Anthologies. Taymur’s early works were influenced by Chekhov and Maupassant. His short stories of the 1920s and 1930s portrayed various social strata in Egypt. Taymur’s prose is marked by humanism and psychological subtlety. In the late 1930s and in the 1940s his prose was influenced by symbolism but after the revolutionary coup of 1952, Taymur’s works were predominantly realistic.

Abstract:
E. M. Forster’s short story collection The Life to Come and Other Stories (1972) features a set of intensely homoerotic stories. In this article, I re-address two of them: “Dr Woolacott” (1927) and “The Classical Annex” (1930) through the lens of Sara Ahmed’s theory of Orientation. I shall argue that Forster’s erotic short stories offer their potential readers the possibility to re- orientate themselves towards the representations of queerness and towards Forster himself. They manage to do this by presenting readers with depictions of queer realities that are often ignored or misinterpreted in a direct way, and by subverting the traditional discourses of pathology and aestheticism. I argue, as well, the criticism of these stories needs to be reviewed so that they may attract the critical attention they deserve among Forster’s creations.

Abstract:
This essay argues that Lewis understood very well that his fantasy stories—and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in particular—would invite allegorical interpretation, and that, in his thought, this fact need not oppose, but might strengthen, their status as mythical fairy stories. It argues that Lewis would not have opposed allegorical interpretation as such, provided that it be done well, without hermeneutical exclusivity, and that the reader not confuse the potential of allegorical interpretations with the genre of allegory. The essay concludes by highlighting features of LWW that invite allegorical interpretation, and asking questions about the role of the reader and the nature of the text. The essay has two overarching objectives as it relates to C. S. Lewis criticism at large and LWW more specifically: first, to encourage investigation of and nuanced thinking about allegory as a genre and as a variety of interpretation; and concomitantly, to discourage polemic against the term ‘allegory’, to avoid its use as a merely negative category contrasting with supposal or romance.

Abstract:
Right after the fall of Suharto’s regime, Indonesia has undergone tremendous changes in almost all aspects of life: political, economic, social, cultural, and possibly ideological lives. The changes bring new breaths to Indonesian future, especially in the area of women’s rights. This article discusses the issue of women’s rights in Indonesia based on a textual analysis. The purpose of this writing is to investigate the representation of women’s rights issues in some stories of The Jakarta Post, one of the most popular media which has also played an important role in popularizing and spreading such issues. Postcolonial criticism is used to see how the stories portray the issues of women’s rights, particularly gender equality and marginality. To study the issues, this analysis looks at two short stories: “Gender Equality” by Iwan Setiawan and “Street Smart Mom” by Eric Musa Piliang. The two stories represent the fact that Indonesian women fight against colonization for their rights in some different ways, as a smart wife and a poor street mother. The stories signal that Indonesian women struggle to escape from colonization through some actions such as moving forward to the center of power by maintaining superiority against men and living their lives as they wish in spite of being poor.

Abstract:
Ernest Hemingway’s stories with African Safari themes play a significant role in his abundant works and they deserve an in-depth investigation. However, little academic scholarship has been devoted to these African stories compared with his other works. As eco-criticism has become an important perspective of the Hemingway studies, this article is an eco-critical interpretation and deep exploration of the ecological consciousness in “An African Story”. In this story, Hemingway revealed man’s cruelty towards the animals and presented his contemplation over the conflict between man and nature from an innocent little child’s point of view. Through the detailed description of the protagonist David’s experiences as a bystander of an animal slaughter, Hemingway exposed the conflict between human beings and nature. The story is actually a presentation of Hemingway’s sympathy for the destroyed ecology, which also reflects the writer’s pursuit of spiritual home and his criticism against the human exploitation of nature.

Abstract:
The study has been able to ascertain and prove beyond doubt that Das’s prose works are of no less ranking than her poems and that she has effectively employed the short story form to present the predicaments of Indian womanhood and their quest for identity and self-assertion. The exhaustive evaluation and thorough scrutiny taking up various aspects of he stories right from her themes, structure and style, narrative techniques to her portrayal of Indian women, their status in society, and identity crisis have finally led to the emergence of the New Indian woman. Das’s feminist approach and overt outlook, along with the quest for a self-determined and self-affirmed identity for Indian women, have been well established through a methodical and exhaustive contemplation of the diverse women characters. The conclusion that emerges from this study undoubtedly corroborates and attests that Kamala Das’s name stands at par with the pioneer Indian woman short story writers. Das has efficiently and effectively used the short story genre as a document of social criticism and has established herself as a feminist crusader, campaigning to acquire for the Indian womanhood an independent identity and self-dignity. Das’s short story, with its innovative style and techniques, simple language, and concise form, has been brilliantly explored in discussing the problems facing Indian womanhood, especially her search for selfhood. Das has adeptly highlighted and presented her outlooks with the help of her characters. The fact that her English fictional work has remained obscure and un-honored is a sad story and a loss to literature.

Abstract:
The Quran had various styles and modes in making up Gods word, one of which was the narrative one. There were many narrative verses in the Quran -including verses telling stories of His prophets- to which most of Muslim scholars unfortunately did not devote their attention. A.H. Johns, a professor of ANU, was one of a few scholars who focused his study on narrative criticism that was actually one of branches of literary criticism. Unlike historical criticism which tended to investigate the origins of a text and what lied behind it, literary criticism gave much attention to interpretive acts of a text itself. Using this method of interpretation, and relying on his belief that the Quran must be understood as a both a process and an event, Johns explored possible meanings the verses imply by making connection between the verse under discussion and other verses in the same pericope and in the whole Sura. Through this method of interpretation, Johns succeeded in discovering many novel meanings of narrative verses of the Quran not found out by using any other method. This work wanted to elaborate much on Johns study and showed some fortune and possibilities in using this method in understanding the meaning of the Quran, especially of its narrative verses.

Abstract:

Eka Kurniawan's Corat-coret di Toilet short stories compilation book contains twelve short stories that tell about light stories everyday but full of social criticism. Some of the short stories that portrayed female characters presented women who were not free in their lives, one of which was titled Dongeng Sebelum Bercinta and Si Cantik yang Tak Boleh Keluar Malam. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the position of women and their resistance toward patriarchal domination. This is interesting to be studied further by using feminist theory to find the position of women in literary works written by male writers. This research will focus on the actions of female characters which shape their position in the story. The data used in this study are in the form of words, sentences or expressions from short stories that show the dominance of patriarchy towards women and their efforts to get out of domination. From research using feminist theory it was found that patriarchal domination arises in the closest male characters to female characters such as fathers, male friends and husbands. Women resistance in the story was a form of false resistance which in turn strengthened the dominance of patriarchy and the dichotomy between men and women. This was found based on the fact that every resistance made by women turned to weaken women themselves.

Abstract:
It is generally held that the short stories of the Australian writer Marjorie Barnard (1897–1987) do not express political values or deal with social issues, but are confined to the exploration of personal concerns. The author herself referred to her short stories as subjective ‘indulgences’, and this evaluation has largely been accepted by commentators. In this paper I challenge this interpretation and argue that the political pressures of the later 1930s seeped or forced themselves into her short fiction and, further, that several of her most interesting stories were directly instigated by and concerned with contemporary political and social questions. I further suggest that as her own political commitment intensified under the pressures of fascism and war, her original devotion to practising art, untainted by propaganda, came under severe pressure.

Abstract:
Spanning over a period of six centuries from the 13th century till the 19th century, Classical Turkish Literature takes up a reputed position in Oriental Literature. In the earliest centuries, classical Turkish literature was heavily influenced by Arabic and Persian Literature; however upon completing its foundation, it started to embrace a domestic and national character as of 16th century. With the advent of 16th century, particularly in masnavis as used to narrate lengthy stories, a different path was taken from other Oriental literatures in regards to characters and settings in stories. Stories, then, began to evolve within the borders of Ottoman territory and a wider place was reserved to take notice of witnessed problems. In some of these masnavis it is feasible to come across social reflections on the specific period and certain expressions that would most probably not approved at an age this work was compiled. In that sense one of the salient examples is Nefhatü’l-Ezhâr masnavi written by 17th - century poet Nev’i-zâde Atâyî. In Nefhatü’l-Ezhâr it is detected that defects that the poet witnesses in his society are narrated to his readers in short stories that develop within a plot. In such stories, Atâyî criticizes the kind of people exploiting religion for personal gains and those simple men licking powerful men's shoes for self-interest. In relation to social criticism stealing and injustice of rulers are highlighted-issues by the poet. Further to that, by narrating obscene stories, the poet attempts to unveil a form of corruption that has eroded moral fiber of community. In order to better grasp a literary text and locate the author's messages aimed for the reader, there is need to approach a work from a wide range of perspectives. In our research, stories that are considered to reflect traces from society in the said work of Nev’i-zâde Atâyî will be elaborated within the context of sociological criticism.

Abstract:
Grotesque character commonly refers to Southern Black or Black character who represents “misfit” and “freak” and bad things. Grotesque character is often used in Flannery O’Connor’s short stories to criticize the issues in society. In the short story “The Geranium,” she criticizes the Black racial issue in White society at that time. This paper aims at showing how a White character, Old Dudley, who is considered as having high status, is placed as a grotesque character in the form of a “freak” person with dislocations and hallucination. This paper also intends to show how O’Connor represents Southern, and Northern Black characters legitimated as grotesque or evil in White society indeed have good sides. This study finds out that grotesque is used to address a criticism toward White supremacy on Black subordination and that grotesque is indeed a bad part of the dual quality (good and bad) of all human characters in the short story.

Abstract:
Abstract In her seminal book on metafiction, Patricia Waugh describes this practice as an obliteration of the distinction between “creation” and “criticism.” This article examines the interplay of the “creative” and the “critical” in five American metafictions from the late 1960s, whose authors were both fictional writers and scholars: Donald Barthelme’s Snow White, John Barth’s Lost in the Funhouse, William H. Gass’s Willie Masters’ Lonesome Wife, Robert Coover’s Pricksongs and Descants and Ronald Sukenick’s The Death of the Novel and Other Stories. The article considers the ways in which the voice of the literary critic is incorporated into each work in the form of a self-reflexive commentary. Although the ostensible principle of metafiction is to merge fiction and criticism, most of the self-conscious texts under discussion are shown to adopt a predominantly negative attitude towards the critical voices they embody – by making them sound pompous, pretentious or banal. The article concludes with a claim that the five works do not advocate a rejection of academic criticism but rather insist on its reform. Their dissatisfaction with the prescriptivism of most contemporary literary criticism is compared to Susan Sontag’s arguments in her essay “Against Interpretation.”
