Abstract:
The literary creativity of I.Ya. Yakovlev is analyzed in this article. It's noted that his works harmoniously combine didactic and aesthetic features. In the history of the Chuvash literature I.Ya. Yakovlev became one of the founders of the Chuvash juvenile literature. His stories are distinguished by vivid imagery and language simplicity. The heroes of the works (people, animals, plants) are characters close to understanding, living next to young readers. The relevance of the study stems from the fact that the works of I.Ya. Yakovlev can be widely used in the moral and spiritual education of preschool and primary schoolers. In this regard, the purpose of this article was to focus attention on the fact that when analyzing the writer's stories, it is necessary to consider the Chuvash national mentality, didactic and aesthetic features at the same level. Only such an analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the main idea of the work. The research subject is Ivan Yakovlev's short stories-miniatures and scientific research of Chuvash literary critics. As part of the study, the following results were obtained: folklore becomes a significant phenomenon in Yakovlev's stories, his work became the first step and the basis of the Chuvash juvenile literature.

Abstract:
This article is an empirical study on Choi Myung-ik’s literature conducted in North Korea(1945-1967). There are three things discussed. First, I found several new first-round records that give a glimpse of Choi Myung-ik’s literary and social activities during the period of his return to North Korea. These activities include the revision of the date of birth, the year of school, the activities of the Education Bureau during the liberation period, the joint exhibition of the novel collection Engineer, and the dispatch to the local area Second, the writer discovered six books of Choi Myung-ik’s works. Except for the Bunin book Buddhist monk Seosan which is a copy of the Yanbian Competition Society, the rest are historical materials and children’s and youth literature. After the war, the essence of the most important literature was in those two. Third, 21 new pieces of Choi Myung-ik’s words, which were published in the continuous media during the period of his stay in North Korea, were discovered. Thus, the total number of episodes will increase to 78. It was put into 12 branches by Choi Myung-ik. It is a story with medium-length novels, short stories, bean novels, wall novels, saga stories, true stories, essays, pelletons, reviews, political theories, and juvenile novels. Choi Myung-ik was a dagalae writer. This article greatly expanded the scope of Choi Myung-ik’s literature. Waiting for quick research.

Abstract:
For decades, “societal reaction theory” or “labelling theory” has provided the most significant explanation for deviant behaviour, particularly in the case of juveniles. The theory argues that once a stigma is attached to an individual, an irreversible process occurs whereby the labelled individual begins to identify as deviant and to embark on a deviant career. Hence, rather than deter bad behaviour, stigmatisation and shaming serve only to amplify it. Although the labelling perspective is rooted in sociology, we find proponents of some version of labelling theory in other disciplines, even in literature. The present study posits that in the short stories of Irish-American writer James Thomas Farrell entitled “Big Jeff,” “The Fastest Runner on Sixty-First Street,” “Young Convicts,” and “The Scarecrow,” labelling processes emerge as essential elements in a comprehensive understanding of each story. All four stories are the least critically acknowledged works by the author even though they demonstrate the author’s remarkable talent for illuminating the social and psychological factors associated with deviant behaviour among juveniles.

Abstract:
AbstractDuring the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, thousands of middle-class youths published their own amateur newspapers. These periodicals were printed using the so-called toy (or “novelty”) press, a portable tabletop device that helped democratize word processing. Children often used their presses to compose miniature novels and short stories. They then shared their prose with a national community of fellow juvenile writers collectively known as “Amateurdom.” Adolescent fiction explored an array of subjects, but the frontier, territorial expansion, and empire in the West became some of its particular fixations. All that imperial storytelling, however, possessed a rich subtext. Boys and girls, reacting to late-nineteenth-century changes in the lived experience of childhood, used their printing presses to challenge various constraints imposed upon them. But in so doing, they both perpetuated and reinforced a pernicious culture of settler colonialism that celebrated the subjugation of American Indians. Ultimately, the amateur publications of children remind us that fiction is not exclusively an adult enterprise. The creative output of young people provides important insight into an underexplored realm of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era’s literary world.

Abstract:
The extraordinary importance of stories, legends and fairy tales for the moral, intellectual and educational formation of children is an indisputable fact. Thanks to the viewing of masterpieces of children’s literature adapted to cinematographic art, children, besides having fun, learn values. Based on the development of a theoretical framework on fables and animated film, and in order to shed light on animation committed to social, gender and political issues, this study exposes two feature films and a short animated film released during the period between the years 2018 and 2022. The objective is to determine the role played by feminist directors in teaching and strengthening the morals and culture of young audiences, through the characters of audiovisual stories starring children immersed in very harsh life circumstances, such as war and exile.

Mitchell, Paul. "Science Fiction Re-Visioned: Posthuman Gothic in Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams." Atlantis. Journal of the Spanish Association for Anglo-American Studies 45, no. 1 (June 29, 2023): 112–29. http://dx.doi.org/10.28914/atlantis-2023-45.1.07.

Abstract:
In this essay, I analyse two episodes from the recent television series, Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. I contend that, by adapting Philip K. Dick’s short stories from the 1950s for the screen, the creators of “Impossible Planet” and “The Commuter” offer an important new perspective from which to appreciate the value of his early fiction, which is too often dismissed by critics as juvenilia. Moreover, by re-visioning Dick’s work as posthuman Gothic narratives, the episodes refract long-standing Gothic anxieties about alterity and (post)human existence through a lens that is more often associated with science fiction. This hybridization is instrumental to Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams’ interrogation of the paradigmatic binaries between life/death, interiority/exteriority and reality/virtuality. In my analysis, I use Rosi Braidotti’s theory of posthuman death, as well as Roger Luckhurst’s concept of Weird zones, to illuminate how Electric Dreams explores some of the existential issues that arise from human-technological imbrication.

Abstract Muhammad Hasan Burayghish is one of Damascus’s writers and critics who was concerned about Muslim issues. He was also one of the prominent theorists of Islamic literature who have great number of writings, including literary criticism, biographical studies and Islamic thought as well as education of the Muslim nation and women, published in Arabic newspapers and journals. Apart from that, he was also interested in short story writing and managed to publish his collection of stories entitled (al-Shaikh wa al-Za’im – The sheikh and the leader) before his demise. With all these great contributions, he was deemed as one of the salient pioneers of Islamic literature who played great role in poetry and prose critics as well as juvenile literature especially in the light of Islamic concept. Although he has abundance of writings, there is lack of deep studies on his personal life, educational and working background and his literary career. Therefore, this study is aimed to highlight these matters as well as his numerous writings in detail. The researcher has analyzed critically the information related to Burayghish and the statements of writers upon him. This study found that there are several factors which have set up his high character. Those factors are, continuous encouragement by his father towards reading, instilling of praiseworthy qualities by his mother and effective styles of his teacher in increasing his love towards knowledge. As for the tough place that surrounds him, it was side factors which have influenced his character and personality. He gained diligence and perseverance indirectly through his observation. This study also found that he has given huge contribution towards Arabic people especially, when he left them with hundreds of his Islamic remarkable books and writings. Abstract:

The stories in this collection are all connected by style, location, mood, and theme. They are introduced by a section which questions the distinction of "Southern" writing. The introduction argues that a story's simply taking place in the South is not enough for a work of fiction to be meaningfully classified as Southern. The introduction suggests that literature characteristically matching what most people think of as Southern is most often written out of affectation.

Abstract:

Women these days play many different roles. One could say that it is the sign of the time but despite the advances that our foremothers had made, the women of this decade are working harder than ever. In this collection of stories, the protagonist is one of these modern women, and she goes through many stages of her life. In her quest for a peaceful place in an often violent, unpredictable, and sadistic world, she faces many challenges; and she finds that love, sex, betrayal, fear, and desire are inevitably the basis for any friendship, whether platonic or romantic. Two of the stories, "The Neighbor-woman on the Balcony" and "The Love of Men and Women" are part of a cycle. The rest of the collection, are stand-alone pieces, but they are intrinsically connected by mature, ordinary love.

Ward, Jason Mark. "Other stories : the forgotten film adaptations of D.H. Lawrence's short stories." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2014. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14213/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the critically neglected short film adaptations of Lawrence’s short stories. Building on recent advances in adaptation studies, it looks beyond ideas of fidelity to emphasise how each film adaptation functions as a creative response to a written text (or texts), foregrounding the significance of the fluid text, transtextuality, genre and the role of the reader. The films analysed in the thesis represent a body of work ranging from the very first Lawrence adaptation to the most recent digital version. The three case-study chapters draw attention to the fluidity of textual and visual sources, the significance of generic conventions and space in adaptation, the generic potentialities latent within Lawrence’s short stories, and the genetic nature of adaptation and genre (which combines replication with variation). By considering Lawrence’s short stories through the lens of these rare short films, the thesis provides a fresh, forward-looking approach to Lawrence studies which engages with current adaptation theory in order to reflect on the evolving critical reception of the author’s work.

Householder, Aaron J. "The shadow line : short stories." Virtual Press, 2007. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1365516.

Full text
Abstract:
The Shadow Line is a collection of six short stories featuring characters whose lives take them near, and often across, the metaphorical Line that separates light from dark. Some of these characters indeed straddle that Line, living lives of apparent uprightness while harboring the seeds of inescapable menace. Some hover on the outside of some social structure and yearn to cross over, to leave the shadows of their lives outside for the apparent radiance within. And some live in worlds of brightness and comfort, only to find themselves confronting sudden moments of inexplicable terror. Told from various points of view, these stories invite the reader to listen to the characters — to explore the secrets they keep, the fears and doubts and dangers they face as they confront the darkness — and to inhabit with them, for a short time, the menacing world on either side of the Shadow Line.

Abstract:
A Veritable Press is a collection of six short stories, focusing on the troubled relationships of its characters, exhibited both internally and externally. While the characters in these stories experience the effects of their own decisions, they are generally more affected by forces outside their control, whether those are the choices of others, or the inexplicability of nature. Most characters seek redemption, though they are denied the means to deliver themselves as they move towards an end that seems inevitable. This feeling of inevitability represents the arbitrary and seemingly unsystematic nature of circumstance. Through the use of distinct voices, multiple narratives, and metafiction, each piece works to exhibit an entirely realistic portrait of its places and characters, endeavoring to force its reader to face what is most unpleasant and appalling, in order to understand it.

Millis, Jessica M. "An artist's childhood : short stories." Virtual Press, 2008. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1391234.

Full text
Abstract:
Short stories follows five different characters as they attempt to develop their earliest artistic impulses. Through the use of young protagonists, these stories demonstrate the ways in which our earliest experiences with loss and trauma often create a space for imaginative discovery; the collection reveals that it is the uniqueness of this space, this blend of premature emotional depth and naïve whimsy, that opens up new psychological possibilities for the child-artist. Meant to be read as a collection of intimate character sketches, these stories reveal the artist's intensely visual approach toward growth and maturity. Several stories concentrate specifically on what it means to sustain one's imagination into adulthood, while others use flashbacks to demonstrate the profound influence of childhood memories on adult behavior.
