Abstract:
Are the people of Nepali origin who are born in India and live there transnational? This is a piercing question in transnational discourses in Nepal and India these days. But its answer is clear once we take the help of the concept of transnationalism: they are transnational Nepalis living in India. This reality is further clarified with the studies on Indra Bahadur Rai’s short stories. Almost all the characters in his stories are the people of Nepali origin living in Darjeeling. They are unhappy there and always behave like the temporary residents of the place. Most of his stories deal with t

Art refers to the product of creative human activity in which concepts are shaped and selected to convey an idea or emotion. A short story is an art form, a particular type of artistic activity and a product of the author’s imagination. Unlike novels that usually depict conflicts among many characters, developed through a variety of episodes, stimulating a complexity of responses inreaders, a short story is a brief fictional narrative prose disclosing one character’s inner conflict with others having one thematic focus. It concisely presents events and stirs our imagination.

This article focuses on a comparative analysis of the chronicling of the civil war in Nepal, within the collection of short stories by Maheshbikram Shah, titled Chapamar ko Choro (‘The guerrilla’s son’), with the novels Palpasa Café by Narayan Wagle and Urgen ko Ghoda (‘Urgen’s horse’) by Yug Pathak, and a memoir, Khalanga ma Hamla (‘Attack at Khalanga’), by Radha Paudel. I argue that the short stories adopt a lens of humility in viewing the conflict as opposed to the totalizing narratives of the novels and the memoir that seek to represent their idea of a humble life. This paper is an attempt to reveal the effectiveness of Critical Thinking (CT) strategies in teaching English literature in general and short stories in particular. Critiquing against the conventional teacher dominated practices in English Language Teaching (ELT) in Nepal, this also offers a set of critical thinking strategies in order to make it more participatory and effective. This heavily draws on my experience of exploiting those techniques while teaching short stories in EFL/ESL classroom in Nepal. This paper analyses the gender role in Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's (1890) one of the most popular short stories, The Revolt of Mother through a Marxist feminist perspective. The story depicts the gender disparity created by the patriarchal American society of the nineteenth century and the revolt of a female character, Sarah as the indication of the women's movement of 1848. The analysis of the story reveals how females are dominated and oppressed by the males in the family and also in society concerning decision-making affairs.
