Abstract:
Scott (comme précurseur du genre), The Kissing Man de George Elliott et Lives of Girls and Women d’Alice Munro.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the poetics of the short story cycle - a genre of short narrative fiction, where classical traditions and experimental narrative techniques are used to explicate topical issues of contemporary British literature. Beside the fact that the stories are relatively short, they are characterized by semantic compression, gaps in meaning, “internal” psychological plot, intensity, expressive imagery, lyricism, implications. The consistency of the short story cycle is created by thematic complementarity, coherence of style and composition. The short story cycle by J. McGregor ‘That Isn’t the Sort of Thing that Happens to Someone like You’ is devoted to everyday life of English Fenland inhabitants and can be attributed to the ‘narrative of community’ genre, traditional for British literature. McGregor’s short story cycle embodies almost all modern tendencies of the genre: a wide palette of themes within the framework of topical issues; vivid psychological portraits and images; variety of narrative types and forms; suggestiveness, implications, specific usage of pronouns, stylistic devices of contrast and repetition.

Abstract:
Don Lee reworked his eight magazine stories to varying degrees, arranged the sequence of the stories in a specific order, and published a short-story cycle in 2001. Significantly, the writer changed the ethnic identity of some characters from white American to Asian American. He also added and highlighted Asian American themes and issues. In short, Lee made an “Asian American” short-story cycle par excellence by coloring his stories yellow. This essay examines Lee's rewriting and arrangement of his magazine stories for an Asian American short-story cycle. It first compares the differences between the magazine and cycle versions of the stories. It goes on to examine totalizing devices such as the common setting, recurrent places, connective characters, and unifying themes. Lastly, it elucidates the arrangement of the eight stories and significance of the title story in the cycle. It ultimately argues that Don Lee retrofitted his magazine stories extensively and meticulously for a short-story cycle in order to portray the diverse aspects of post-immigrant Asian America at the turn of the century from his positionality as a third-generation Korean American.

ABSTRACT In Bobcat and Other Stories (2013) and Dog Run Moon (2016), Rebecca Lee and Callan Wink each offer their interpretation of the short-story cycle. The two collections exhibit obvious differences in setting and style of narration but reveal a striking parallel: both collections are inspired by Christian, specifically Lutheran, motifs and allusions. In a discussion of regionalism, the Scandinavian Midwest, and themes such as coming of age, historical political events, and the psychology of relationships are all important, but the deeper structure is best perceived in light of biblical precept. The key to understanding this dimension in these stories are references to Lutheran core passages in the New Testament (printed in bold in the Lutheran Bible) and ideas of Lutheran education.

Abstract:
The paper analyzes I. A. Bunin’s short story “Alexey Alekseich,” which is the central element of the unassembled cycle with a hero named Alexey Alekseevich. The cycle also includes short stories “The Archival File” and “Inscriptions.” A reconstruction of the writer’s strategy of composing the cycle expressed in Bunin’s metaposition towards literature as an aesthetic activity is carried out. Bunin actualizes the expressiveness of the authors’ proper noun (patronymic name) to hold a dialogue with his predecessors and intensify a debate with contemporaries in the literary field. On the one hand, in “Alexey Alekseich,” Bunin diminishes the role of a literary word in culture by parodying authoritative pretexts and polemics with them (L. N. Tolstoy). In this way, the writer invokes the specific theme of modernists – experimental attitude to the literary sign (Potekhin’s character). In addition, he introduces motifs of tomfoolery and oratorical behavior (with allusions to M. Gorky). On the other hand, comparing the different editions of “Alexey Alekseich” and its linkage with other two texts of the unassembled cycle shows that Bunin rehabilitates an artistic word and literary activity by applying onomatopoetic and narrative devices in the poetics of his short story. In this aspect, the role of the literary sign in culture is justified by its unique ability to confront death and oblivion. Thus, Bunin’s short story “Alexey Alekseich” reveals extensive use of the meaningforming possibilities of the proper name.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the peculiarities of the functioning of open and closed space in the artistic text. The purpose of this article is to explore the verbal means of creating artistic space in Jack London's short story from the North Cycle "An Odyssey of the North". It was extremely important in the course of the research to find out the essence of artistic space and the peculiarities of its organization in the text, to consider the main classifications and types of artistic space; to explore the artistic space in the short story in the context of types of information, types of presentation and narrative-compositional forms; as well as to compile frequency lists of the lexical markers that represent the artistic space in the short story and to provide a semantic description of the spatial markers and to determine their stylistic functions in the text. The artistic space in the story is mostly an open exact space. The closed artistic space is represented by only a few touches of the description of the main character's hut. The deployment of artistic space is carried out nonlinearly. Due to retrospection, the real space of the plot is interrupted by the description of the events that developed earlier, and therefore are considered new spatial markers. The real artistic space of the short story is the north of Canada – the Klondike, the imaginary artistic space is the space and its markers that function in the story, that odyssey, told by the protagonist. Both direct and indirect spatial markers take part in the actualization of artistic space in the short story. Direct spatial markers are introduced with the help of toponyms – astonyms and potamonyms and form the megaspace of the short story; and also common names meaning means of transportation and common names with generalizing local reference. Indirect spatial markers are realized with the help of lexical means that define meteorological phenomena, representatives of fauna, clothing items containing this seme. Among the lexical means that represent the imaginary artistic space of the text of the short story, toponyms are dominant. By genre, the artistic space in the short story can be defined as psychological. We see the prospects for further research in a comparative analysis of the means of realization of artistic space in the rest of the short stories that make up the North Cycle of Jack London's short stories.

Abstract:
The relevance of this article lies in the need to construct a comprehensive history of the development of comedy in contemporary Kazakhstani literature, of which the works of Ermek Tursunov are an integral part. The author explores various approaches to the study of irony, satire, and humor, including philosophical (G. Hegel, F. Schlegel), cultural (A. Bergson, B. Dzemidok, M. M. Bakhtin, D. S. Likhachev, Y. Borev, A. M. Panchenko, N. V. Ponyrko, V. Ya. Karasev), and philological (V. Tyupa, V. Propp, M. Yu. Asanina, I. A. Obukhova, S. A. Dubrovskaya). The scientific novelty lies in the fact that Tursunov’s stories are analyzed for the first time in the declared aspect. The research has established that, firstly, irony becomes an important means of comedy in Tursunov’s collection of stories “Karashanyrak”. Secondly, non-direct speech ironically exposes the hero’s surrounding world (“How Kazakhs believed in omens”). Thirdly, there is an orientation towards Chekhov’s humorous tradition (“How Kazakhs received guests”, “How brides became wives”). Fourthly, the writer’s humor relies on national Kazakhstani traditions of comedy embodied in folklore (“How Kazakhs organized noisy performances”). Finally, one of the ways of constructing a comedic plot in Tursunov’s stories is through the synthesis of an anecdote with elements of satire. This study offers new insights into the role of comedy in contemporary Kazakhstani literature and contributes to the broader understanding of humor as a literary device.
