The 2007-2008 Global Financial Crisis provided strong evidence of social dynamics in global financial markets which challenge basic rationality of independent decision makers when choices invoke short term trade-offs as opposed to sustainable long term socio-economic value creation and its ethical implications. Individual market participants are drawn into a Darwinian review of today's decision making environment in which they are called to make choices under systemic uncertainty. Sophisticated visualization tools from fMRI to PET scans allow for brain functions and decision making behaviors to be analyzed in an evolutionary context. From the theory of bounded rationality to its modern critiques by behavioralists, this chapter investigates how social learning may be at its best right at this moment, when ambiguity and known unknowns are extensive and expected utility frameworks are being replaced by local optima findings and “good enough” solutions.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has impacted many industries such as the professional sports business. Almost all professional sports leagues, events, and championships have been either postponed or canceled. This chapter investigates the challenges of reduced revenue streams due to empty venues and canceled broadcasts on TV and on the internet. Also, the effects on the related merchandising business are addressed. Based on a theoretical analysis and an empirical study, the chapter highlights these direct impacts and sheds light on the indirect effects as well. As the pandemic disconnects sports enthusiasts to a certain extent from the team and/or athletes of their choice, certain behavioral aspects could appear. The results of the study underline that the financial effects in the short-term could almost be balanced; the medium- to long-term effects, however, will decrease the market value and threaten the business model of professional sports.

Any business that relies on confidence in its financial position, its brand name or goodwill, talented (but mobile) employees, or short-term contracts with customers or counterparties will be particularly hard hit by suggestions that it is or may soon be experiencing financial distress. Businesses of this type have been likened to ‘melting ice cubes’—once exposed to the heat of potential insolvency, value in the business melts away rapidly as customers and counterparties look to terminate relationships, key employees look to exit, and the goodwill and brand name of the business become tarnished. The catastrophic and rapid collapse during 2008 of famous Wall Street and the City of London names illustrated this in dramatic fashion, but businesses of almost every type will suffer negative effects once financial difficulties become more widely known.

This chapter evaluates short- and long-term relationships between 34 Islamic unit trusts and the Islamic stock market after the global financial crisis. The study collects data from Bloomberg's database from 2009 until 2012 and employs J-J cointegration to identify the long-term relationship while Granger causality test is used to investigate how the changes in Islamic stock market can influence the changes in Islamic unit trusts in the short term. The finding indicates that 61.76 percent out of the 34 Islamic unit trusts tested do not have long-term equilibrium with the Islamic stock market. Furthermore, only a few Islamic trusts responded to the changes in the Islamic stock market. This study is important for at least two reasons: its role in filling the gap in the literature of unit trust—stock markets nexus in Islamic finance; and its findings provide relevant information that can benefit investors and fund managers.

This chapter assesses the emergence of financial institutions that would cater to individuals and businesses, which relieved Norges Bank of some of its tasks such as providing short-term business credit and long-term mortgage loans. Both private banks and government lending institutions were established within a framework of close cooperation between government officials and private operators. At the same time as new institutions were born, the dividing lines between Norges Bank and the government’s role in financial markets became more clear. The chapter then looks at developments up to 1857, a year that was dominated by a deep crisis in Western economies. Norges Bank had established broad contact directly with international finance houses and was better equipped structurally and intellectually to cope with external crises that spilled over into the Norwegian economy.

The outbreak of COVID-19 and the containment measures are having an unprecedented socio-economic impact in the European Union (EU) and elsewhere. The policies introduced so far in the EU countries promote a ‘business as usual’ economic recovery. This short-term strategy may jeopardise the mid-to-long-term sustainability and financial stability objectives. In contrast, strengthening the socio-economic resilience against future pandemics, as well as other shocks, calls for recovery measures that are fully aligned to the objectives of the EU Green Deal and of the EU corporate taxation policy. Tackling these long-term objectives is not more costly than funding the current short-term measures. Remarkably, it may be the only way to build resilience to future crises.

Abstract:
Preceding the global financial crisis of 2007–09, an alternative business model of banking evolved. An important element in the development of the securitized banking model was a growing tendency for banks to rely less heavily on deposits as a source of short-term finance, and more heavily on other sources such as the repo market, commercial paper, and derivatives. ‘Securitized banking’ explains that having raised short-term funding through these means, the bank can deploy the funds to support loans to borrowers such as house purchasers. Often a bank will bundle a large number of loans together and sell the package to a Structured Investment Vehicle set up by the bank to administer the loans.

In the short run, its success depends on the financial performance of ongoing activities, while its long-term evaluation and development depend on its ability to adapt to emerging market changes in the agricultural sector. To be effective, the strategy must be organized in a systematic and formal way in a written document that formulates the long-term and short-term goals of the company and the ways to achieve them. A central debate in corporate social responsibility (CSR) research is whether CSR hurt or help shareholders. Our study suggests that this paradoxical tension between social and competitive activities of firms is a manageable resource-allocation decision. By disaggregating competitive activity into its different forms – intensity and complexity – we develop a model that explains how firms can alleviate the resource allocation tension to improve performance. High CSR firms can enhance short-term performance by reconfiguring its resource base and reducing competitive intensity – the frequency of

In the face of the multiple shocks currently experienced by the domestic economy (resulting from the drop in oil prices and the appearance of a global pandemic), the Colombian financial system is in a position of sound solvency and adequate liquidity. At the same time, credit quality has been recovering and the exposure of credit institutions to firms with currency mismatches has declined relative to previous episodes of sudden drops in oil prices. These trends are reflected in the recent fading of red and blue tonalities in the performance and credit risk segments of the risk heatmaps in Grap
