Abstract:
Short-term orientation aimed at maximizing quarterly results at the expense of long-term corporate performance and survival has become severely criticized. In the face of continuously decreasing chief executive officer (CEO) tenure, CEOs, however, seem to have few incentives to embrace long-term oriented behaviour. Instead, the question of foremost importance to self-interested CEOs is whether short-term orientation already harms financial performance in the three to four years of their own tenure, and whether CEOs stand a chance of benefiting from long-term orientation while still in office.

Abstract:
This study seeks to discuss a potential ‘long-term/short-term dilemma’ for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which could cause tension when adopting two strategic orientations assumed to be complementary – market orientation (MO) and sales orientation (SO). Specifically, the objective of this study is to examine the role of MO and SO as mediators of the relationship between business approach and SME performance. An empirical study of 122 SMEs in the UK grocery sector is conducted. The results reveal that an apparent conflict or tension between market and SO seems to exist in practice.

Abstract:
AbstractBased on a systematic and organized literature review, the academic production for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) on Material Flow Analysis (MFA) was evaluated. This allowed us to know the research developments and to identify the influence of the “Barcelona School” (EB) and Professor Joan Martínez-Alier in this field of work in the region. The general balance of the literature reviewed (47 texts), shows the important influence of the EB for LAC: more than half of the publications have its origin, more than a third correspond to doctoral theses linked to the ICTA-UAB and 30% are published in journals originating in the ICTA-UAB. Thematically, the articles evaluated incorporate the main topics promoted by the EB. They are oriented towards studying the relationships between the metabolic dynamics of economies, environmental pressures and liabilities, and ecological distributive conflicts. These orientations correspond precisely to Professor Martínez-Alier’s central field of work: the link between ecological economics and political ecology. Methodologically, the potential and weaknesses of MFA were identified. Long-term material flow series have the potential to study large material-economic transitions, but little depth. Short and more detailed series, combining MFA with other methodologies, allow to better delve into the black box of energy-material flows and the environmental impacts of economic dynamics.

Abstract:
This first chapter provides readers with a general orientation to mental health conditions. Topics covered include prevalence, costs, and how adults with mental health conditions represent a marginalized and disenfranchised group. The chapter also highlights physical health problems that adults with mental health problems may experience. For a variety of reasons, contemporary inpatient treatment durations settings have become briefer, thus challenging service delivery. The chapter describes how advancements in pharmacological and psychosocial treatments have resulted in music therapists having to adapt to new care models to augment the likelihood of illness management and recovery for adults with mental health conditions.

This chapter cites Ola Söderström, who demonstrated how off the map cities in the Global South are enmeshed in transnational relationships that determine their growth. It emphasizes closer attention to the politics of translocal connections as clear determinants of the intensity and orientation of the trajectories of urban development. Understanding how politics play out is an exercise in contemporaneously appreciating future orientations and the historical processes that led to today in relation to places such as Dubai, Sydney, and Singapore. The chapter emphasizes how the creation of governing relationships between those who control the city and those who live under such rule is no short-term feat. Even behind the myth of super-fast urbanism, Dubai, Sydney, and Singapore can showcase both historical and international trajectories.

Abstract:
The chapter offers a well-understood voter orientation to explain why the facts do not fit the myth. Republicans generally vote at higher rates than Democrats due to predispositions that reflect socioeconomic factors. When overall turnout increases, the less participatory are showing up, but Democrats are not advantaged by higher turnout for two reasons. The first has to do with the magnitude of the turnout difference between Democrats and Republicans, and how that affects the vote between or (for a few elections) among the candidates. The second part of the answer reflects the greater susceptibility of peripheral voters to short-term, election-specific influences: when turnout increases the short-term forces can (and often do) move peripheral voters toward the Republicans.

Full text
Abstract:
This Chapter introduces the market for corporate control and provides theoretical and empirical context about the functioning and effects of the market for corporate control. Ideally such context should inform the analysis and evaluation of the Takeover Code’s regulation of the UK market for corporate control. However, as the Chapter shows, neither our understanding of the likely effects of the market for corporate control on companies, boards, shareholders and stakeholders, nor the state of empirical evidence provide clear cut guidance on how to regulate the market for corporate control. The Chapter considers evidence on the value effects of takeovers and shows that evidence from the short term market response to announced takeovers supports claims that takeovers in aggregate generate value, but the longer term evidence is more mixed and inconclusive. It also considers the methodological limitations of both the short term and long term evidence. The Chapter then proceeds to consider the effect of the market for corporate control on stakeholders. It explores the commonly held view that takeovers are detrimental for employees but finds again that the empirical evidence is inconclusive, although the theoretical case that takeover activity may undermine employee investment in the business remains compelling. The Chapter then explores the role of the market for corporate control as a governance device. It is often assumed that the market for corporate control acts as a disciplinary device holding managers to account, but as the Chapter shows the disciplinary effects work differently and less precisely than regulators and the public debate commonly assume. The Chapter also shows that such indirect effects may also mould management and board behaviour in economically suboptimal ways, which the Chapter considers in the context of the debate about the possible short term orientation of UK boards.

Abstract:
Abstract Effective trajectory planning and cooperative control of multi-agent systems require accurate localization of the agents to perform collaborative missions. Accurate localization may be achieved by Global Positioning System (GPS) and simultaneous localization and mapping. However, GPS signals and fixed features may not be readily available, particularly in remote and unstructured environments. Under these circumstances, Cooperative Localization (CL) has been proposed as a short-term solution that can significantly improve vehicle pose estimation. CL algorithms have been developed and t
