<p>Our objective is to test the performance of a real SMS Processing System. We will work with Boost Communications, a norwegian company that is developing a SMS Processing System to sell interactive SMS solutions. With our test, we want to be able to put the system performance into numbers, and to identify and eliminate possible bottlenecks. In order to achieve our objective we will use different techniques. First, we wil build an analytic model, a simple one, an we will use It to try to identtify the main weak points on the Architechture. Once built, we will run a few tests on the Architecture to identify our modeled parameters values. The second step will be to build a simulation model using the knowledge we will had achieved while doing the analityc model and the first tests. At the end, we will have to be able to point the bottlenecks and offer solutions to them. These solutions can be hardware based, or software based</p>

Abstract:
Music Education<br>Ph.D.<br>This research continued a line of inquiry previously established at Project P.L.A.Y. School, a play-based, Reggio-Emilia-inspired preschool in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, the purpose of which was to explore what can happen when young children and adults co-construct music in a social, relationship- and play-based environment. Three questions initially guided this study: 1) How does musical content emerge? 2) How is music play developed in this setting? 3) How do children and their teachers story their music experiences? Using narrative and heuristic approaches to inquiry, I, along with my co-researchers, highlighted ways to make children's musical learning audible and visible. Having been a member of this community in the dual role of musical play partner and researcher since fall of 2012, I framed this dissertation study to encompass the weeks of September 16 through December 18, 2014. During that time frame, I increased my visits from once to twice weekly, with fourteen children aged 2.5 through 5 years old, five of whom I knew from the previous year, and five other adults. As both a play partner and researcher, I continued my role as music facilitator who views young children as competent and capable co-music researchers. Amidst other stories, I increased focus as I continued a pedagogy of close listening to children as music co-researchers. Living alongside each other at Project P.L.A.Y. School, children and adults generated and collected shared musical stories. Data sources for this study included audio and video recordings, photographs, artifacts such as artwork and musical notation, and my research notes and journal. I continued using narrative and heuristic approaches to inquiry, and restoried narrative vignettes highlighting children and adults as music co-researchers. From the resulting grand narrative, I found that shifting lenses and all adults mindfully viewing these young children as competent music researchers facilitated and supported children's creative, multimodal expressions of their research interests. Viewing children's and adults' interactions through the lens of co-music researchers lead to abundant, creative musical expression from children and adults alike. Musical content emerged when adults and children interacted as music co-researchers and protagonists in their shared stories. This inquiry generated the following additional questions: 1) How can adults best facilitate young children's musical research interests? 2) How can adults and young children make their collaborative research audible and visible? Implications from this study include encouraging all adults to adopt a pedagogy of listening, to notice and value children's creative musical expressions, and to value children's musical lines of inquiry as researchers.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
Taking the case study of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, the largest event of its kind in Europe, this thesis examines the role that agricultural shows have in the modern-day countryside. Agricultural shows are a key fixture in the rural calendar. In recent years these events have changed from being a social and competition space, purely aimed at rural residents, to today displaying the finest livestock, mechanical, technological, and skills innovations serving a wide number of economic, social, cultural and environmental features targeted at the wider population. Despite their significance to rural society, agricultural shows remain largely unexplored in geography. Taking a mixed methods approach, and by undertaking an in-depth study of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, this thesis investigates the role that agricultural shows have in (re)imagining and (re)presenting their host communities. The thesis continues by examining the manner in which large-scale rural events can be seen as a nexus for knowledge exchange and innovation, before considering how large scale rural events influence the politics and governance of rural areas. This thesis suggests that agricultural shows are an important means of collective identity for rural people, and that these events reimagine their host communities. It also finds that agricultural shows are vital sites for the development of social capital in rural areas, have significant roles in knowledge exchange, and the development of rural buzz. Finally, it is concluded that agricultural shows inhabit a powerful, but extraordinary location within the political landscape of their host communities, having an influence on their politics and governance.

McCarthy, Mark R. "The Daily Show: Journalism’s Jester." Scholar Commons, 2009. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4270.

Full text
Abstract:
The social meaning of television news has been under transformation since the successes of cable news in the final years of the previous century. In their attempts to preserve viewership and to remain relevant, traditional broadcast news outlets increasingly emulate the conventions of cable news. Instead of retaining audiences, the result has been declining news content and a continued loss of viewers. Amid these industry transformations, the concept of “journalist” continues to undergo change. This evolution of the news allows for a decidedly unique response to news programming in The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. Though advertised as a half-hour comedy show, it has established itself as a consistent re-teller and producer of news, only possible in a postmodern era of journalism after objectivity. Amid the industry’s shift in priorities from objectivity and reporting to influencing, framing and re-telling the news, The Daily Show is considered as much an example of journalism as many of the shows currently in the news sphere. Although our society is currently saturated with information, this information often fails to penetrate the surface of the issues covered. Too much information is as paralytic as ignorance. Recently, attention has shifted towards a re-evaluation of television news into something that will both help the public find the information they are searching for and give them the tools to make sense of and utilize that information. This concept of journalism as tool is present in every episode of The Daily Show. The show encourages viewers to peel away the layers of mediation of traditional newscasts, to recognize substance and the lack thereof, and become active consumers of information rather than passive receptacles submersed in irrelevant information. The Daily Show proves that a news show can inform, entertain and teach audiences how to critically process television as an informational medium.

Corrieri, Augusto. "In place of a show." Thesis, Roehampton University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10142/313778.

Full text
Abstract:
In Place of a Show is written to function both as a creative writing project and as a critical-theoretical enquiry. It focuses on the once dominant architectural and aesthetic apparatus associated with Western theatre since the Renaissance: the théâtre à l’italienne, or the European opera house. An enclosed space, functioning according to specific conventions embodied in its form (curtains, stage, proscenium arch, auditorium, balconies, etc), this construction has long been dismantled and abandoned. And yet, might its very ruination signal a persistence of sorts? What kind of potentialities – material, imaginative, historical – might lie within empty or unused theatres? Each of the four chapters focuses on a particular building, linking its specificities to broader questions around the persistence of the theatrical apparatus: 1. A baroque opera house in Munich, meticulously dismantled during the WW2 bombings and later reassembled on site, prompts questions over the theatre’s preservation as a means to obscure historical destruction. 2. A chapter on London’s Dalston Theatre, demolished in 2007 to make way for a shopping and residential complex, explores how a theatre might be seen to “linger” after it is gone, subtly manifesting within sites and structures that bear no apparent relation to it. 3. During a visit to the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza I witnessed a swallow flying beneath the auditorium’s sky-painted ceiling; the flight of the bird reconstitutes the otherwise empty theatre as a place for inhabitation and co–presence. 4. Based on a trip to the Teatro Amazonas in the North Brazilian city of Manaus, the chapter explores the interplay between theatre and non-human nature, reflecting on the opera house’s construction at a time when Manaus was supplying most of the world’s rubber. What emerges in the writing is a building unlinked from its “proper function” i.e. the staging of performances. The focus falls on the promissory force held by walls, seats, curtains, and the micro-events taking place within and without the building. What happens in a theatre when nothing is happening? What occurs in place of a show?

Abstract:

Real estate is an important class of assets on investors portfolios and also largely contributes to waste generation, energy consumption and has a significant impact on health, because people spend several hours of their days at the office or at home. In this paper I explore whether brazilian FIIs (funds that invest in real estate just like american REITs) with greener portfolios show better stock returns and operating efficiency. I extract properties owned by each fund and its financials from CVM3 and LEED scores of each property from USGBC4 . I run a set of fixed-effects regressions of stock return, asset and equity turnovers on the share of green properties for each REIT over the 2001–2017 period and detect an approximate 1% increase in stock return given a 1% increase in portfolio greenness, but find no evidence of increased operating performance. Another model, accounting for endogeneity of past returns is developed and shows no relationship between greeness and returns or operating performance.<br>Se empresas que exercem práticas socialmente responsáveis se beneficiam em relação a suas concorrentes é tema sob debate, no mercado e na academia, já há algumas décadas.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of show-through in old manuscripts and documents. After removing the show-through these documents can be stored in the digital libraries and will be accessible by everybody via Internet. The solution to this problem utilizes the image restoration technique. To apply this, the documents are scanned from each side and stored in a digital form. The two sides of document are called recto and verso images. To approach an apposite solution a basic model of the degradation is defined for these two images and then this model is used to eliminate the show-through. The technique for the enhancement is divided into two parts---first, achieving the most precise registration technique and secondly, to compute a method of restoration using the model of degradation. Four different techniques for registration are compared to select the most suitable method for this problem. This comparison brings forth the affine transformation approach to register the image. An approach for the restoration of the registered images is defined to eliminate the show-through from the document and save it in a digital library.

Abstract:
Virtú has long been associated with manly traits like strength, cunning, valor, and ruthlessness. Much has been debated among these lines, whereas others have taken the approach of letting virtú and its meaning be undetermined. In this thesis a comparison between the different theoretical and practical meanings of Machiavelli’s teachings are discussed, with the conclusion being that there might be a case for virtú as being similar to showmanship, alternatively, an ingrained part of human nature. This conclusion is derived from comparison of different sources regarding Machiavelli’s works, with the Prince and the Discourses as the core of the interpretation. The flexibility of virtú and its circumstantial nature creates, through the arguments in this thesis, a basis for virtú as something other than a trait to have or to be developed. That being said, I am cautious to finalize a meaning to virtú, because of the nature of the word and its meaning. It has been interpreted to fit different subjective realities ever since its release, whereas this thesis might be found to do the same. Virtú and Machiavelli is hard to fully grasp, which makes it all the more interesting to try to derive meaning where none might be found.

Abstract:
In the following nine linked stories, characters from disparate backgrounds and socio-economic strata converge in a rural community along the Missouri river in central Montana. A Texas-based oil exploration and production company takes up residence in the area, causing a stir in the neighborhood. Long-time local residents experience their daily lives amid a tourist driven economy and reaffirm their aspirations to leave despite significant obstacles and limitations. In "Show Me the Way to Go Home," a young waitress is stranded after a car accident and seeks help from residents living on the single row of houses in the area. In "Give Death Grace," a resident artist leaves to resolve her tumultuous past with her father. In "A Good Little Fisherwoman," a woman deals with the repercussions of her recent reproductive decisions during a fishing trip. In "Little Fires," a local man deals with the tragic burn injury of a child while also facing deeply rooted resentments with his mother. In "Dwelling," an aging local must decide whether or not she will sell her home to two strangers. In "Other Important Areas of Functioning," a woman decides to discontinue her mood stabilizing medications in favor of a more natural lifestyle. While this place means something different to each of these characters, they all coexist while facing individual challenges.

Abstract:
Agricultural shows are community-based festivals that represent a majority of festivals staged in rural destinations within Australia. Recent anecdotal evidence indicates their survival is being threatened. Declines in the overall number of shows and visitor attendance have been widely reported, yet an analysis of the reason for these declines has not been investigated. Agricultural shows are managed by volunteers within not-for-profit show societies who are finding it difficult to survive in an increasingly competitive and challenging external environment. Little is understood about these show societies, their volunteer managers and the management effectiveness. This study has addressed these gaps by investigating show society management effectiveness by means of a marketing concept paradigm. A case study method employing qualitative in-depth interviews with key show society members and other stakeholders was conducted on one agricultural show. Findings reveal that this show society is managed by volunteers whose primary involvement motivation is based upon self-interest in one or more components of the show. The majority of these individuals do not have management skills and expertise required to manage a festival and whilst it is important to note their volunteering contribution, it is this lack of skills and knowledge that has prevented a systematic approach to management. There is no attempt at consumer research, strategic planning, organisational planning or volunteer recruitment. The show programs do not change to reflect the current needs of the community, rather what is affordable, who can organise it and what has always been done. As a result, the case study show society is not employing a marketing concept orientation but a product concept orientation. This study concludes that without this focus, the show society will be ill equipped to meet changing customer demands and stay abreast of competitors. To assist agricultural shows to manage future challenges and adopt a marketing concept, a theoretical model has been proposed that incorporates existing frameworks and this study’s findings.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Master's thesis is focused on the Slovakian TV show Nákupné maniačky and its' audience. The purpose of the thesis is to reveal the motivations leading to watching this show and to explore, whether the viewers perceive the show as a fashion show which allows them to draw inspiration, or rather as a reality show that should entertain them. The theoretical part introduces the concepts as audience, uses and gratifications and reality show genre. The final analysis of the acquired data is based on these terms but it aims to invent a new hypothesis. The second part is devoted to the research that is based on a qualitative method of a grounded theory. Required data was collected by the semi-structured interviews with viewers divided into two age categories. The result of categorizing data indicates that for all viewers the main motivation for watching the show is to have fun. Participants reported enjoying the program because of its' humour, while fashion plays an irrelevant role. The findings also show that participants are aware of interventions of production and they explained manipulating competitors as a strategy of the broadcasters to entertain audience and attract more viewers. This assumption was confirmed by an informant interview with one of the creators of the show.

Abstract:
The Big Show with Tommy Le Van. Tommy is on the run. From his parents. Crazed babies. An over-excited Lamaze coach. A man on stilts. A nearly retired game show host. Police. Talking storks. A mover with a panty fetish. A bus driver named The Tip. And while they're all chasing him, he's running after his ex-girlfriend, trying to get her back in the hopes that everyone else will go away. Around and around they go. And if Tommy stops he won't be able to say no. If he stops moving he'll have to settle down. Get a real job. Buy a house. Get a bank loan to pay off renovations on a deck. Have a kid, raise it, and watch the whole process begin again. The cast of characters wants to make sure this happens. Tommy's a disruption to their ordered lives. He has to be assimilated back into the system before anyone else begins to question their role. They must get Tommy. So Tommy has to keep moving. He stumbles through conversations. Falls on his face.
