The design, in its various fields, is a generator agent of needs. Would be the exhibits elements of perception? There would be changes in these responses when introducing a possible emotional dislike object, such as a wheelchair? In addition, be able to understand the emotional responses of consumers, by observation, in front of a shop window would generate data to design much more accurate and secure about what consumers are watching, than proposing them a question. Questioning consumers about a product can be an uncomfortable situation and their answer would not be true. Therefore this research aims to perceive the emotional responses of consumers in front of images of shop windows, applying observational methodology, and thus obtain data that can corroborate the design, in the emotional and fashion areas.
CAPES/PDSE: 13845/12-8
CNPq/Programa Ciência sem Fronteiras: 248830/2013-9

Abstract:
Being a fundamental element of the commercial process, the importance of a proper visual presentation of shop windows is critical. The present research analyzes this everyday urban element in the city of Barcelona, and more specifically, its lighting requirements and visual inconvenients associated with the Mediterranean climate, and how they are or should be faced so its aesthetic and commercial function is not prevented. The complexity of light presentation of these elements is linked to their exposure to varying light conditions of the outside environment. In Mediterranean climates, the temperature favors the urban commerce; duration of daily solar radiation is extensive and solar intensity is very important throughout the whole year. The most radical change between day and night, in the constantly changing urban landscape, includes natural lighting of surfaces that no lighting design has projected and with unsurpassed intensity for whatever artificial lighting applied, making its energy consumption vain. There has been performed a study of a sample of shop windows of Barcelona in its natural opposing lighting situations, day and night, analyzing their visual results and using as a tool their own luminance maps. Also, after analysis in simulation program that incorporates solar trajectories, have been selected typical cases which by their orientation and position in the Barcelona 's urban fabric bring the most commonly produced effects in the majority of them, delving the effect of solar incidence. The basic tools of this analysis have been, once again, the luminance maps themselves and evaluation, by computer application, of the odds of glare and its possible sources. The study concluded identifying and confirming the main inconvenients that can impair the visual result and, therefore, the commercial purposes. Reflecting on the possible solutions and their proven effectiveness on the problem, instead of aspiring to compete with sunlight, there have been studied design alternatives with minimal environmental impact. Projecting an adequate sun protection for each case by its analysis in simulation program, and changing the reflection factor of its key surfaces, are an example. Finally, the potential visual and energy benefits of redirecting sunlight towards the interior of the scene were evaluated. In this regard, a system of reflective surfaces for a showcase type has been designed and two prototypes, with and without the proposed system, have been elaborated in light models. By the comparison of their visual outcome, have been confirmed its visual benefits and the possibility to reduce energy consumption by the double effect of obstruction of sunlight and the use of its intensity so as to raise illuminance levels in the interior of the scene.

Abstract:
Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Masters Degree in Technology: Fashion Design, Durban University of Technology, 2012.
The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of creating shop window displays focussing on a South African identity in the Durban region. The impetus for the study stemmed from the design of the Constitutional Court which features elements of South African culture. This study challenges the contemporary notion of presenting window displays using primarily Western influences and proposes the use of fashion imagery and cultural identity currently dominating South Africa. The study argues against corporate fashion stereotypes and champions a representation of an eclectic multi-cultural South African society. In this respect key theories of identity, culture, and design were explored. A qualitative methodology was conducted utilising interview and observation approaches to obtain data. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve local professionals specialising in the fields of art, design, fashion and architecture to obtain their expert opinions. The data was analysed by clustering information into themes to establish the findings. Interview findings revealed that shop window displays should accommodate local imagery appropriate to the South African context. Observing two local production houses, namely Hirt & Carter and Barrows in Durban provided insights for a backdrop creation for the practical component of the study. The practical comprised of producing retail shop installations and a visual catalogue representing findings drawn from the study. The catalogue was used to illustrate the results of investigating a national image and identity that could be intrinsic to window display creation in South African fashion retail shop fronts.

99
With the rise of Asia economy in recent years, Chinese fashion designers are getting more and more attention from the world.Among them are Taiwanese designers who gradually came to establish their own brands. However, due to different expectations from designers and consumers, domestic market for Taiwanese original design brand is weak. Most Taiwanese designers turn to overseas opportunities for their career. Therefore, we should promote the interest and knowledge of Taiwan's design industry to the genral public, and seek to change our consumers' purchasing behaviors. Our government and privite enterprises should work together to create a fashion design center mall focusing exclusively on Taiwanese original brands. The mall combines the functions of education and display and provides newly-started designers with chances to set up their own brands as springboard to the international market. Through observing JING-MING shopping district, I transform the display windows into different types of layout systems. It becomes a new way of displaying designer's products when the design and manufacture processes are also put on show.Nearby public streets are extended to guide passangers to the mall and introduce potential customers to participate in design activities and workshops.By opening itself to the public, the mall enables customers to assume the point of view of designers and enrich their experiences with the products.

Abstract:
This dissertation is a study of the architecture of commodity capital: the display window. Taking as a starting point the work of Henri Lefebvre and Goerg Simmel, this dissertation understands the shop window to be a mode of display, what I define as “the logic of the vitrine,” that has shaped the way the world appears. Tracing a genealogy from the Parisian Arcades to the twentieth-century department store, this project explores the relationships between gender, sexuality, race, and architecture. Feminist critiques of commodity desire and display illuminate how the shop window is as important to our understandings of capitalism as is the commodity. Through feminist, queer, postcolonial, and anti-racist readings of material and commodity culture, this dissertation considers the shop window to be a site of subject formation. This dissertation also examines how designers, artists, and architects have explored the display of the shop window through a series of case studies, including Marina Abramovic’s Role Exchange, Gene Moore’s “drag” in Bonwit Teller’s shop windows, the making of a black mannequin, and Lynn Hershman Leeson’s site-specific installation 25 Windows. This dissertation concludes with a consideration of the architectural role reversals of the shop window and the gallery; the work of Silvia Kolbowski and Elmgreen and Dragset’s Prada Marfa ground this analysis. Artists have disrupted the display of the shop window, transforming the architecture of commodity capital into a space for resistance and critique.

Abstract:
102
This study investigates production scheduling problems with due windows using flow shop and job shop cases. In practice, due windows have become an important issue for real time production in order to facilitate the interests of related industries. Reentrant flow shop scheduling, two-stage flexible flow shop, and job shop scheduling problems are the most common production activities in the real world. Therefore, by applying the due windows constraint, this study attempts to minimize weighted early and tardy costs, based on the just-in-time concept. For solving scheduling problems with time windows, this study develops three effective methods that prevent unexpected delays and associated large losses during production. With related studies demonstrating that ant colony optimization algorithm (ACO), and particle swarm algorithm (PSO) are both effective and efficient means of solving scheduling problems, this study; develops a farness particle swarm optimization algorithm (FPSO) to solve reentrant two-stage multiprocessor flow shop scheduling problems in order to minimize earliness and tardiness, a novel effective ant colony optimization (EACO) algorithm to solve two-stage flexible flow shop scheduling problems and thereby minimize earliness, tardiness and makespan, and a wise select ant colony optimization (WSACO) utilizing due window and sequence dependent setup time for constraints, and solves the job shop scheduling problem in real world. Computational results indicate that either small or large scale problems are involved in which FPSO algorithm, EACO algorithm, and WSACO algorithm outperform original PSO algorithm and ACO algorithm with respect to effectiveness and robustness. Importantly, this study demonstrates that FPSO algorithm can solve such a complex reentrant flow shop scheduling, EACO algorithm can solve the two-stage flexible flow shop, and WSACO algorithm can solve the job shop scheduling problems with due window and sequence dependent setup time for constraints efficiently. This study offers IP solutions for the best solutions within a satisfactory time and the three proposed algorithms provides solutions for quick response to market within a short time. Computational results prove that the three proposed algorithms have a higher solving capacity than the common ACO and PSO algorithms. The proposed methods reduce waiting and tardiness costs, helping enterprises simultaneously shorten makespan, increasing profits, and lower overhead costs, and the results of this study can also be used as the basis for further study about other management issues of related companies.

99
It is needless to say that high-tech industry is one of representative industries in the world. All corporations are pursuing the goal of maximizing effective and efficiency. But, how they achieve this target is a key issue need to find out. In this case, corporations must attain these objectives which are the improvements of produce effective, satisfactory of customer, and creating the ability of continually profiting via allocating resources properly. The reentrant production scheduling points out that a procedure of making a product may come from a machine processing more time. And it is easy to see this common scene in high-tech industries such as, semiconductor manufacturing. Because of this, the reentrant production problem is gaining more and more attention in recent year. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been proven to be a tool of achieving effective and efficient in data clustering, financial forecasting, image processing, etc., but PSO isn’t easily seen in scheduling comparing to other traditional algorithms. This study will use basic PSO concept to improve PSO, named as the Farness Particle Swarm Optimization (FPSO), and compare results of its computational result with the traditional PSO and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). Experiments confirmed that the FPSO provides both time and solving efficiencies.

With globalization, parallel machine operating mode can be adopted to increase the utility rate of condition, decrease inventory and delivery on time. With the manager’s emphasize, delivery on time has derived due windows. It means that as long as works complete in due windows, it can satisfy the customer’s asks. This research utilizes integer programming and ant colony system algorithm to solve flow shop with multiprocessors scheduling with due windows. For expecting to get the solution closer to due windows, we divided the job into different units to let the job operating on multiprocessors in order to decrease the total weighted earliness and tardiness of the jobs. Scheduling operations expect to bring into full play the minimum stock level, wastes, the least idle time and deliver the goods on time, so derive the time window problem. Previous literature regarding job shop scheduling problem (JSP) rarely concerns the machine set-up time, and measure regular is minimizing the tardiness. Here the due date is discussed one point. The study will confer the JSP, and let the due date for an interval. Focusing on scheduling with time window of JSP and expect to get the solution close to the time window. Minimize the total penalty due to the earliness and tardiness. The property of our study is NP-hard. So we construct the mathematics model for JSP with time window first, and then test the simulate data. The solution got by ant colony optimum (ACO) programs that written by C-language and compare with the best solution gotten by LINGO 7.0 to test the efficiency and robust. The result was pointed out the ACO has good efficiency on the test. And the solving time is less than LINGO. So ACO had both effectiveness and efficiency that stressed on business management.

95
In the category of Show-Window, we can know design concept is an important part in whole design process via literature. And design material that is sketch always be present the design concept. Design sketch is a rapidly present design concept and immediately design material. Traditionally, show-window designer are always use Single-Viewpoint to draw design concept. And then we always used to revise and adjust to obtain an optimum visual layout in later phases of design in the past. It is time-consuming work and reduces the interaction with Consumers’ environment in design process. Hence, our research’s objective is implementing an interactive Multi-Viewpoints design media CAD system that have physical interface. It not only can immediately obtain Multi-Viewpoints design sketch but also can interact with design environment. Thus it can get more interaction with Consumers’ environment, increase and stimulate more design thinking.

97
Facing the complex environment and the growing inflation, all organizations are committed to the pursuit of cost minimization and profit maximization. For operation scheduling, it will help an organization lower cost and increase profit if this organization can arrange the best allocation of enterprise resource. Hence, the development of the relating research regarded as importantly by industry conductors and scholars. In a wide variety of production scheduling environment, this study choose job shop scheduling as the theme because the figure of job shop scheduling fit in the actual production situation. For this kind of scheduling problem, a large number of studies have confirmed that ant colony optimization (ACO) is a heuristic solution method which provided with efficiency and effectiveness. However, owing to the obvious constraints of solving ability, ACO isn’t absolutely the best method for solving different scheduling problems. In order to improve the traditional ACO, we insert a new type of pheromone into the traditional ACO, and name the new feature of ACO as “two-pheromones ant colony optimization (2-pheromones ACO).” In the job shop production system, we take time window and sequence dependent setup time for constraints, and solve the problem. By the data testing, we confirm that 2-pheromomes ACO has a better performance than traditional ACO, and has potential opportunity to replace the traditional ACO.

98
A good scheduling not only may improve machinery equipment's utilization ratio, and can assign the limited resources properly, raises the production efficiency, then reduces the cost. Job shop production system is one of basic production types, its scheduling of complexity is quite high. In faces the competition, the balance of workstation's load, using mixed type production system disposition is necessary for reducing the cost and using capacity effective. But in the flexible job shop type production system, in the workstation disposes parallel machine is the most common one way, such system must coordinate the effective scheduling, can display the whole the system function and the benefit. The study will aim in the workstation to dispose the parallel machine platoon of regulation question the flexible job shop type production system to conduct the research, considered just in time, by due windows substitution sole delivery point in time, discusses under the due window limit, how arrange the processing sequence, seeks the minimum earliness and tardiness cost, satisfies the enterprise to give dual attention reduces the inventory cost, and satisfy the customers need. In the optimization solution, will establish the integer programming model, regarding the general scale's question, can obtain the best solution by Lingo. Because the research question essence is NP-hard, therefore the question scale expands, the optimization solution will be very difficult in the reasonable time to solve, even though obtains the best solution not to have the effectiveness. Therefore, the study will improve the traditional ant colony system, constructs two pheromone ant colony system to obtain near optimal solution in the short time. The material test work also regarding this validity and the perfection of the meta-heuristic, will carry on the complete test and the discussion. After small-scale problems and large-scale testing problems, the results show that two pheromone ant colony algorithm solves in small scale problem that the effectiveness of the improvement rate is 67.25%, showing two pheromone ant colony algorithm for solving the capacity problem in this study is superior than ant colony algorithm.

Abstract:
97
Job shop scheduling problem (JSP) is the most complex situation among all, and JSP is also the most common situation in practical situation. Generally, JSP can be solved by integer programming (IP) for optimal solution, but the time consumed rises rapidly as the problem size grows. Therefore, heuristic methods are applied to greatly reduce the time consumed. Among all heuristic methods, ant colony optimization(ACO) is the most widely used in recent years; however, in facing problems with time window constrains, ACO is not yet endowed with a effective algorithm. Thus, based upon ACO, this paper presents new algorithm to solve JSP with TW, and the approach is named “dynamic time window selection ant colony optimization(DWSACO)”. This paper studies on JSP with TW, and there is a given ready time for every job; the purpose is to minimize weighted average of the sum of total earliness and total tardiness. Then the problem is solved by IP, ACO, and DWSACO respectively, and at the end the effectiveness and robustness of each method are analyzed, expecting to contribute both practically and academically. The result shows that both ACO and DWSACO are able to obtain approximate optimal solution in a short time, and although in different sizes of problem, DWSACO consumes a bit more time than ACO does, the solutions obtained by DWSACO are closer to optimal solution than ACO’s. Near the end of this paper, the improve rates of effectiveness and robustness show that DWSACO is superior to ACO.

Abstract:
97
Scheduling is one of essential dimensions of production management. As the age of flexible production comes, we have to raise the productivity effectively and reduce the production time. And then flow shop with multiprocessors (FSMP) appears. We can not only see FSMP in the glass and iron industries, but also in semiconductor industry. Generally, no-wait of FSMP is one of production types which is often applied to field. Production must be continuous and no idle in process, and we should consider setup time simultaneously. The idea of just in time (JIT) is so important for corporate world, so the JIT of production becomes a significant index of customer satisfaction. And then the issue of time window appears. The reports of related studies show: ant colony optimization (ACO) has been proved that is an effective tool of scheduling. If we could improve the algorithm and enable it be closer to optimal solution. It would contribute to the issues of optimization. This algorithm bases on the ACO idea, and submits a method which could be applied to FSMP of time window. The method was named as ant colony optimization with flexible update (ACOFU). Through the simulated testing, we can receive better results than ACO.

98
The rapid growth and development of digital signage promotes the bloom of outdoor advertising industry. This kind of advertisement will become the mainstream in the future. The nature of interaction between advertisements and users comes from users’ experiences which must be the major focus of design. Therefore, this research discusses the interactivity of shop windows and design processes of them with the following four steps: (1) understanding ideas of interaction design through the literature review and case studies from America and Europe on interactive shop windows; (2) cooperating with a team to create an interface platform called “I-Window” to put those design ideas into practice; (3) inviting users to operate and test “I-Window” and collecting users’ opinion from two focus groups; (4) analyzing research data to determine what design factors of interactive shop windows matter and are influential to users. The results of this research show that there are seven different design factors which affect users’ opinion, including “visual factor,” “layout factor,” “attraction factor,” “information factor,” “system factor,” “control factor,” and “additional functionality factor.” This research attempts to explore the new field of interactive shop windows and be a reference for further researches and design.

Abstract:
102
Taiwan popular water station industry has developed for years, from the previous spring water refilling station to a vending-machine-type water station; now, it has developed to a store-type water station with a transparent show window. Thus it is obvious that the Taiwanese demand for water quality is not only about the “taste” but also takes consideration of the “aesthetics or appeal”, “cleanliness”, as well as the transparency and visibility of the water purification process. Only by catering to these can the consumers whose needs improve continuously be satisfied. At present, most water stations on the streets are located in the open air and water bottles are also directly exposed to the sun, thus the water source, sanitation and health concerns indeed bring great worry to consumers. The research discusses that the company utilizes a large commercial RO water purification device to produce drinking water by filtering tap water and the water production process and water bottles are placed in an enclosed room with a transparent show window to display the process. In addition, the vending machine is designed as a lovely robot to draw people’s attention. The research takes water station consumers as the survey subject, asking for their perception and inputs. Through the statistical package software of SPSS, the research conducts result analysis of questionnaire data and adopts relative statistical methods such as descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, validity analysis, regression analysis, etc. to get the following conclusions: The selling method via the transparent show window can meet the consumers’ desire to know the facts and details so as to improve satisfaction and loyalty. Thus, the water station companies are encouraged to improve their service quality no matter on hardware, software or service personnel’s attitude, for all these aspects will affect the consumers’ perception and their satisfaction and loyalty toward the brand.

"Minimizing Total Weighted Tardiness in a Two Staged Flexible Flow-shop with Batch Processing, Incompatible Job Families and Unequal Ready Times Using Time Window Decomposition." Master's thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.15135.

Abstract:
abstract: This research is motivated by a deterministic scheduling problem that is fairly common in manufacturing environments, where there are certain processes that call for a machine working on multiple jobs at the same time. An example of such an environment is wafer fabrication in the semiconductor industry where some stages can be modeled as batch processes. There has been significant work done in the past in the field of a single stage of parallel machines which process jobs in batches. The primary motivation behind this research is to extend the research done in this area to a two-stage flow-shop where jobs arrive with unequal ready times and belong to incompatible job families with the goal of minimizing total weighted tardiness. As a first step to propose solutions, a mixed integer mathematical model is developed which tackles the problem at hand. The problem is NP-hard and thus the developed mathematical program can only solve problem instances of smaller sizes in a reasonable amount of time. The next step is to build heuristics which can provide feasible solutions in polynomial time for larger problem instances. The basic nature of the heuristics proposed is time window decomposition, where jobs within a moving time frame are considered for batching each time a machine becomes available on either stage. The Apparent Tardiness Cost (ATC) rule is used to build batches, and is modified to calculate ATC indices on a batch as well as a job level. An improvisation to the above heuristic is proposed, where the heuristic is run iteratively, each time assigning start times of jobs on the second stage as due dates for the jobs on the first stage. The underlying logic behind the iterative approach is to improve the way due dates are estimated for the first stage based on assigned due dates for jobs in the second stage. An important study carried out as part of this research is to analyze the bottleneck stage in terms of its location and how it affects the performance measure. Extensive experimentation is carried out to test how the quality of the solution varies when input parameters are varied between high and low values.
Dissertation/Thesis
M.S. Abstract:
From 1922-1942, the Austrian-American architect and designer Frederick Jacob Kiesler (1890-1965) designed architecture based on the idea that it must complement the physiological and psychological processes of the human body. In order to reconcile the technological changes wrought by industrialized production with the need for structures that promoted human health, he developed an inspired model for interactive design. His formative experiences in Europe working with De Stijl and the G-Group, along with his exposure to Central European examples of architecture, art, and science set the agenda for his later works. Yet he never stopped experimenting with new concepts that would bolster his essential philosophy of body-generated space. After he immigrated to the United States in 1926, Kiesler’s pursued his ideas about physiological and psychological architecture within a new cultural milieu and a network of encouraging personal connections. He forged relationships with a sympathetic community of émigré industrial designers and architects who promoted his efforts to integrate modern technology with new design idioms. During his first fifteen years in New York City, Kiesler looked to contemporary science as a way to advance a model of flexible architectural design. He also worked at the cutting edge of industrial design research and was an early protagonist of human factors engineering methods. His body-centered methodology stood in opposition to aesthetic and reductive approaches toward modernism and functionalism. Instead of designing according to a priori determinations of what was functional and what was not, Kiesler’s functionalism was based on an iterative design practice that would reveal progressively more useful and universally applicable forms.
text

Abstract:
Recent studies published in peer-reviewed journals have shown that 50% of all companies that have suffered severe injuries and not recovered within 10 days, never recovered financially, and 93% of companies without a plan for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity), are out of business within five years after a severe disaster (loss of relevant data). It is therefore natural that Business Continuity is an increasingly issue on the agenda of most decision makers of organizations, regardless of their nature (vs. private. public), size and activity. The widespread concern for the occurrence of unforeseen situations such as natural disasters or some kind of hacking, or other more mundane incidents but with a probability of occurrence relatively higher, such as equipment failure or fire, makes continuity business processes, regardless of the type of incident is a major concern. This comes as a growing concern objective not only technological but desirable and especially business. Organizations (now virtually all) focused on information, the key to survival in a situation classified as "disaster" is both preventive (to protect the information) and reactive (able to retrieve it in time). As a corollary, we then have a dependency on a convergence of actions, including: • Know the main business of the organization and the main risk factors at the level of business that affect the organization as well as the impact on revenue • Understand business processes have to be protect and what kind of disasters / threats may be subject • Protecting and their degree of exposure to disaster / threat • Validation of the state of preparedness of the organization to respond to a situation of loss of information and thus maintain the business continuity The better the quality level of these actions, the greater the probability of success in business continuity organizations. The aim of this work is to create a framework that supports organizations with superior facilities of this nature, providing significant efficiencies in efforts to safeguard and replacement of data in particular, in the management of temporal windows, the use of technological solutions (optimal use of resources, tasks and operations requirements multidimensional (Backups robots, backup and restore information, for example) and, ultimately, alleviating the need for these are endowed with human resources specialized in the subject and all surrounding financial need. The Framework will be supported by the best algorithm for each scenario, according to the Job-Shop model in which a set of scenarios is subjected to a staggering through a component (scheduler) set to test the algorithm with the aim to simplify and streamline procedures rehabilitation and safeguarding, through a management requirements, resources, tasks and operations in order to: • Estimate time for the Protection and Recovery • Manage plans for the Protection and Replacement • Develop reporting procedures Using this framework described and following the objectives listed is intended to demonstrate: • The feasibility of the resource • Automatic Scaling • The effectiveness and efficiency of a limited set of algorithmic approaches to the objective scenario • Plans for safeguarding and properly optimized replacement It is described in summary form the tangible results: • Cost reduction in recurrent appeal to specialists in Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC / RD) • Better management and safeguard global window replacement • Allow the coach (safeguard and replacement) to have plans available to safeguard and replacement by an optimization requirements, resources, tasks and operations • Ability to run simulations of real systems and measuring the impact of recent changes in information systems or support for the preservation and replacement, as well as early identification of future constraints • Ordering of the best performances successfully in finding solutions through the following income statement:
