Abstract:

The objective of this research was to evaluate the nonspecific immune response and resistance of Litopenaeus vannamei fed with nucleotide, β–glucan, and protagen diets. Shrimp juveniles with an average weight of 5.39±0.56 g were reared in glass aquaria at a density of 15 shrimps/aquarium. Shrimps were fed three times a day for four weeks at a feeding rate of 3%/bw/day. During cultivation or processing and packaging, microbial condition is an important issue to maintain the quality of shrimps. Unfortunately, they are potential vectors of epibionts, which may be unintentionally introduced to aquaria with imported shrimps. This contribution presents the first report of the occurrence of Holtodrilus truncatus on aquarium freshwater shrimp Caridina formosae. Abstract:

This chapter analyzes Japan’s narrative of the Nanjing Massacre between 1990 and 2008. Over this period, the official narrative came to include admissions of responsibility and apologies, and then backtracked to resume mythmaking and relativizing (while continuing to apologize.) Pressures from China and Korea, along with transnational activism, contributed to the shift to apologizing and deepening acknowledgment. At the same time, domestic political considerations in Japan – most notably, domestic contestation, party politics and electoral concerns, and concerns about compensation claims – frequently shaped the content and extent of changes in the state’s narrative. In particular, deepening revisionism in Japan, including high-profile “gaffes” related to “history issues” and official visits to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine, both fed and served as markers of the backtracking.

Abstract:

This chapter explores the critical reception of SAW (2004). Critical acclaim for the SAW films is rare. The New York Times regarded the series as 'distasteful', while the LA Times went as far as to say the films were 'vile filth'. Although there are notable critics who support the horror genre, horror is usually dealt short shrift by critical institutions. Certainly, reviews of horror films within the mainstream press would seem inclined to evaluate the film's morality, rather than any artistic or dramatic achievement. An interesting aspect of horror reception, however, is that the genre would seem to be critic proof. Horror audiences are mistrusting of, and even actively contradict, mainstream disparagement of their beloved genre. Despite initial maulings from mainstream reviewers, SAW went on to considerable success.

Approaching the issue of architectural heritage management is therefore significantly different in an on-reservation setting. While necessary as part of the National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 review process, opportunities for the tribal architectural historian to engage in meaningful projects with the community were extremely limited. Against this background, the Red Barn project represents a sea change in the history of the THPO and as a partner for community heritage activism.

Abstract:

Since 2007, the Japanese state has actively promoted the virtues of a robot-dependent society and lifestyle. As the population continues to shrink and age faster than in other postindustrial nations, the state is banking on the robotics industry to reinvigorate the economy and to preserve Japan’s alleged ethnic homogeneity. The concept of extending citizenship to robots is discussed in conjunction with human rights and policies affecting ethnic minorities and non-Japanese residents. Laws of robotics articulated by Isaac Asimov and Osamu Tezuka are compared, and the familial nature of the latter’s is analyzed. What does the Japanese pursuit of coexistence between humans and robots forecast about new approaches to and configurations of civil society and attendant rights in Japan and in other technologically advanced postindustrial societies? Chapter 5 closes with observations about human exceptionalism and Japanese exceptionalism regarding human-robot relations.

This introduction explains how and why the essays of Queer Bloomsbury combine the Bloomsbury Group’s personal lives with aspects routinely elevated to a higher status – art, politics, philosophy – understanding these as inseparable aspects of the same phenomenon. Contributors to this volume neither shrink from nor capitalise on sexual details, but are primarily interested in how group members’ queer perspectives enabled their thinking and its results. Sexual intimacy between friends of either gender was not only accepted, but understood as a rich source of intellectual, artistic, and philosophical affinity. Contemporary philosophical and political theory has returned to the insights cultivated by the Bloomsbury Group, if that return is characterised as a holistic way of living sexually, intellectually, artistically, ethically, and intimately, rather than in parts. Considering Bloomsbury as an interdisciplinary field – inhabited by artists, authors, philosophers, economists, political activists, art critics, journalists, and biographers – enriches our understanding of early twentieth-century cultures.

The two authorial versions of Musorgsky’s Boris Godunov reflect contrasting historiographical and ideological traditions that were being debated in the 1860s and 1870s, when the opera was being written. The difference is epitomized by the St. at St. Basil’s shrine in the original version, which depicts the crowd (i.e., the Russian people) according to the tradition of Nikolai Karamzin, the autocracy’s official historiographer, as submissive and dependent; and the so-called Kromy Forest scene which replaced it in the revised version, which depicts the crowd as actively rebellious and as a powerful agent, according to the then recent revisionary writings of Nikolai Kostomarov. What then of the widespread custom, dating from the Moscow Bolshoy Theater revival of the opera for Mujsorgsky’s centenary in 1939, of including the two scenes in a conflated version of the opera that the composer never imagined? Despite its manifest incoherence from an historiographical standpoint, it has become popular owing to its aesthetic and dramatic qualities. It thus crystallizes a key problem in academic reception studies, which have generally followed a modernist bias that upholds authors over audiences.

Abstract:

The works of French sociologist Robert Hertz (1881–1915) are now staple readings in general anthropology. This study of the cult of a saint in the Italian Alps is lesser known than Hertz’s celebrated essay on the symbolism of death and sin, “Death and the Right Hand” (1907), yet it remains a model of classic ethnography. Hertz was raised in a devout Parisian Jewish family, studied at the École Normale Supérieure under Émile Durkheim and Marcel Mauss, and later became a critical member of the famous Année Sociologique group. The influence of the Année—its concern with theoretically driven, detailed, holistic, and integrative analyses of social phenomena—can be seen in his essay “Saint Besse: Étude d’un culte alpestre” (first published in 1913 in the French Revue de l’Histoire des Religions and translated into English in 1988).<sup>1</sup> The essay is a painstaking, eloquent ethnohistory, locating Saint Besse intimately in divergent paths of regional history and local tradition, where Saint Besse’s shrine in a rocky Alpine overhang is, quite literally, embedded in the landscape. The essay portrays beautifully the independent spirit of popular Catholicism, especially in the flexibility of the hagiography of Saint Besse, which allows each community—whether mountain peasants or village dwellers, even church authorities—to lay claim to the saint through the qualities he is seen to manifest: the courage of a soldier, the moral stature of a bishop, and the devotion of a pious shepherd. The work is methodologically unorthodox for a Durkheimian, for Hertz not only draws on oral and archival sources, popular, local, and ecclesiastical traditions, but also has left his Parisian armchair for direct, “participant observation” in the field. In the Italian Alps, as elsewhere, a vibrant popular Catholicism evolves from pagan, telluric sources, sometimes articulating with official Catholicism, sometimes not. In typically Durkheimian fashion, Hertz describes the tremendous power of Saint Besse to knit together diverse communities of people morally and physically through collective religious devotion. In Hertz’s focus on Saint Besse as a material source and mediator of social identity we can read this work as a precursor to many other great ethnographies on Catholic saints (popular and more official), whether in Europe, Latin America, or elsewhere. But we can also read in the essay the political and moral vision of a socialist, activist—and Jewish—scholar who saw in a popular rural Catholic saint cult the vitality of community life that he might have seen as missing in his own social milieu of pre–World War I France.
