This thesis seeks to examine the extent of the role that the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) played in Taiwan's high-technological development and whether developing countries of today can promote such development by creating similar institutional arrangements. Literature on innovation systems was reviewed, particularly national innovation systems and the role of R&D institutions within these. Taiwan's recent economic success, deemed attributable to economic and institutional reforms in recent decades, was also studied. In depth analysis was carried out of its leading high-technological research institute, ITRI, which bridges the gap between industry and academia. Although the case of Taiwan is sometimes presented as a unique example of industrial success of an SME-based state, this thesis argues that this success was possible because the research and development process had a large institute at its core. One way of creating such a research scale is by merging existing institutes, a process that would result in more efficient use of capital and human resources. The case of high-technological development in Pakistan is briefly assessed in order to gauge how its existing institutions structure could be amended to allow such changes to be made. The study concludes with the following three main points: (i) scale is an important factor: Taiwan's SME-based industry was able to succeed because of a large research institute at its core; (ii) in developing countries, governments decide which form of high-technology to pursue and when; thus, timing and choice of sector are important; and (iii) political leadership was seen to be important in the case of Taiwan's development in high-technology, and can play a key role in developing countries of today.

Full textOn March 18th, 2000, Chen Shui-bian, representing the Democratic-Progressive Party (Minjindang), succeeded Lee Teng-hui, member of the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) and first Taiwan president elected by popular vote. However, starting in 2000, and until the end of Chen Shui-bian's second term in 2008, a number of political standoffs occurred in the Legislative Yuan, as a result of the KMT and its allies of the so-called pan-blue camp securing control of the parliament's majority in every legislative election. Our thesis aims to understand how these deadlocks happened, and the way in which each branch of the government negotiated to find agreements. We particularly focus on the role played by the Great Justices of the Judicial Yuan (Sifayuan Dafaguan). Were the Great Justices called upon by the different branches of the government to end the stalemates, or did they stay away from political matters? The Great Justices have consistently asserted their independence as a constitutional court. Instead of deciding in favour of one party or another, they have privileged procedural solutions, providing thus an institutional framework for conflict resolution. In matters of civic liberties and human rights, the Great Justices have ruled in favour of protecting and extending the rights already enshrined in the 1947 Constitution. The Great Justices therefore appear more as defenders of rights, i.e. ombudsmen, rather than as a constitutional mechanism to work disputes out. This institution thus acts in keeping with its historical role during the democratic transition

The theme of this research is “chair”. It reflects my day-to-day experiences and what I have learned in life so far. By expanding my knowledge of art theories and criticisms, I hope to 1) develop new concepts and seek new possibilities for my artworks and 2) form mental images about a specific theme inspired by the surrounding environment and events in life. Meanwhile, to best represent the ideas and concepts formed during the creative process, I experimented with different media and techniques to find the perfect expression. Thus, my collection consists of various genres, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and creative writings. Regarding the theoretical basis of this collection, this research first examines: chair’s functions and roles in the human society, the role chair plays in our daily lives, and the relationship between humans and chairs. Afterwards, by means of art I try to breathe life into “chair”, the seemingly lifeless concrete object, and transform it into my very own representative. These personified chairs in my art help to enunciate my own philosophies of art and life. Thus, the subject matter of this collection touches four areas: nature, seasons, human society and personal emotions. In the process of creating this collection, I explored the evolution of chair—how its form and function changed throughout the years, and the result becomes the inspiration for my artworks. From the perspective of life wisdom and harmony, I created 24 artworks for this collection. According to the themes, they are divided into four series: “the story of chair”, “the frame and limitation of chair”, “chair’s four seasons” and “chair’s Love”. In addition, I created a selection of photographic work—42 photographs—as an expansion of the “Chair’s Love” series. Finally, I carried out an in-depth analysis and provided a detailed discussion on my works. This research has allowed me to explore my creative process—how I develop concepts for my artworks, and opened new possibilities. What I have gained from this research will become the foundation for my future works.

“Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua” is a well-known literature collection while “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua Bian-Zheng” is a work by Peng Shu-Xia after he participated Chou Bi-Da’s 2nd proofreading on “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua”, in which the work became an important work in the history of academic proofreading. However for decades, scholars have only regarded this book a by-product of proofreading task of“Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua”, and even regarded this as annotation work of “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua” by mistake, although many people hold a positive attitude towards Peng Shu-Xia, but however, it’s a pity that they did not get into deeper exploration on this book and this person. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to discuss the academic background, the circulation status of “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua Bian-Zheng” and to explore Peng Shu Xia’s viewpoint on proofreading and his impact on the future world. This paper mainly starts from Peng Shu-Xia himself and “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua Bian-Zheng” two directions. Firstly, it roughly describes the proofreading work in Song Dynasty and its related academic development, to further clean up Peng Shu-Xia’s contribution and value of “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua Bian-Zheng” by the achievement of proofreading work demonstrated by a contrast made to “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua Bian-Zheng”. Besides, it conducted detailed textual research and depiction on the origin and development of “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua Bian-Zheng”version, identified and analyzed the pros and cons among different versions. Also, via minor annotation of “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua”and content match method of “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua Bian-Zheng”to support the appearance of “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua Bian-Zheng” is not for proofreading of “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua”, in which the meaning and value shall be respected more by later generations despite the book originated from proofreading work of “Wen-Yuan Ying-Hua”.

Art is a reflection of time which mirrors the life and thought at that time. The topic “The Conversation between Light and Shadow in the Space—Discussion on Mixed Media Creation of Shu-yuan Kao” is to record how the creator’s personal life experience, feeling of life, and spiritual change are expressed through creation after theoretical investigation and analysis and spiritual internalization and to seek for an outlet for life in the form of life diary. The external and internal aspects of “light” and “shadow” are investigated through the expression of light and shadow in the painting creation. This work discusses the meanings of light and shadow, and analyzes the psychological aspect of shadow. For example, shadow is the loss of light; the symbolization of “shadow”; “shadow” is an inner shadow face which is incompatible with selfhood. The development of “light” in painting history is investigated and four representatives in the history of modern art, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Monet, and Cezanne, are analyzed. Their description and expression methods of light, shadow, space, and color are analyzed and their influences on other artists at that time or even the schools of painting are discussed. It is hoped that more artistic expressions could be revealed in this creation by following the steps of masters of painting. In the aspect of creation idea, theoretical investigations and contemporary artistic elements and ideas are used to define creation form of the creator. And the addition of personal cultural traits expands the possibility for the insights of self-creation and the diversity of media. Beautiful things discovered in life are recorded by expression methods such as light reflection, light penetration, and figuration. Overlapping time is expressed by overlapping multidimensional space and various gradations. In addition, the light reflection and inverted images generated by acrylic mount could interact with appreciators and make the creation vary with the change of time and space. To put this creation idea into practice, the creation is divided into three series, the series of window shadow, glass, and nature and the contents, forms, and media are investigated, respectively. Window shadow series express the multi-level and true and false phases of light and shadow, reveal the memories of different time, which retains personal memories and is also a kind of self-inspection. Glass series express the diversified change of artificial environment and nature under the sunshine through the angles that light penetrates the transparent glass. Nature series express the creator’s observations and feelings of natural scenery around her life. Although these are common flowers and plants, they reveal different life inspiration.

The anti-eunuch struggle of the ‘Tung-lin Party’ (東林黨) which was succeeded by continuous partisan disputes in the late Ming Period has long been considered of great significance to understand its contemporary politics and even the collapse of the dynasty. However, the other aspect of this movement, namely the scholarly practice of the Tung-lin academy (東林書院) has not been given equivalent attention. Therefore, the development of the academy after the so-called ‘partisan disaster’ (黨禍) has been, not surprisingly, seldom discussed by existing studies. This thesis aims at providing a historical account of the Tung-lin academy in early Qing period (1644-1722), focusing on four main topics: the organization of public conferences or lectures(講會), the debates over the academy’s pantheon , the discourse on moral integrity(氣節) and the increasing concerns for academic orthodoxy among intellectuals.
Scholars in the academy were by definition involved in the tension between Confucian values(道) and the political authority(勢) since they were supposed to be both academic and political elites. What complicated the issue was the defiant attitude of Ming-loyalists towards the newly established Manchu regime. Although being regarded as shelters for scholars who refused to serve the Qing government, academies could hardly be insulated from those ambitious local officials who were playing the role of patron as well as regulator. By exploring closely the case of Tung-lin academy, this thesis attempts to indicate that, the conflict and compromise between intellectuals and political authorities, alongside with the retrospection upon the cultural crisis of late Ming, had gradually shaped the interest of Qing scholars who inclined to restrain their work purely academic in contrast with their late-Ming predecessors who were enthusiastic about pursuing the political implications of their learning. This very transition could also be reasonably one of the many contributors to the declination of Li-hsüeh(理學,the study of principle).

This thesis examines the possibility and limitation of meanings description system in shape grammar. First, the defination and operation of form and meaning are being stated. The formalized description of shape grammar not only forms the geomatry and location of spaces, it can further explore the meaning within. Eleven tranditional Taiwan shu-yuan (書院) buildings are selected as examples. These buildings'' plans are being generated and accomplished with meaning descriptions. The grammar shows the plan organization, function, and geomatric attributes of tranditional Taiwan shu-yuan buildings. Further this research distinguishs the relation between architectural form and meanings in formalized system, and sets up a meaning- form research
