Abstract:
In this paper, we undertake a study of the lexical semantics of verbs with the meaning ‘to pourʼ in one of the small Eastern Iranian languages of the Pamirs — Shughni, spoken in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province of Tajikistan. Data for the paper were extracted from the published dictionary of the Shughni language [Karamshoev 1988–1999], as well as field materials from 2021 (Khorugh) collected by the authors on the basis of a typological questionnaire. The work ends with the construction of a typological map based on the Shughni material.

This paper describes the semantics of one of the verb forms in Shughni, traditionally called Perfect. This form displays many areally-motivated typological similarities with perfects in other languages of Western and Central Asia. In particular, Shughni has developed an evidential opposition between the Preterite and the Perfect, in which the Perfect is used for non-witnessed events. It is also used to express experiential and irreal semantics. A small class of “stative-perfect” verbs is distinguished, for which the Perfect form expresses a state in the present. I compare these construction types, analyze types of semantic relations between the possessor and the possessee. This article describes the optional 3rd person singular enclitic i in Shughni (the Pamir subgroup of the Eastern branch of the Iranian languages), which appears with transitive verbs in the past tenses. The research is based on a corpus study as well as elicited examples. Generally, the enclitic i occupies the Wackernagel position after the first constituent, but can shift due to the operation of rhythmic-syntactic barriers. Two barriers that affect the position of the enclitic are described. The first type of barrier (the subject in the first position) is caused by syntactic factors, it affec

The paper deals with verbs and verbal constructions with the meaning ‘to seek, to search, to look for’ (the semantic field SEEK) in the Shughni language against a typological background. On the basis of dictionary data and the results of elicitation sessions with native speakers, the peculiarities of the lexicalization of the SEEK field in modern Shughni are revealed, and assumptions are made regarding the dynamics of the development of this system from the middle of the twentieth century to the present day. We show that, in this semantic field, there is a clear lexical dominant — the verb x̌i

In the article, I consider the syntax of coordinating and subordinating clause conjunctions in Bartangi (an Iranian Pamir language of the Shughni-Roshani branch). I show that, unlike most other Iranian languages and in contrast to earlier descriptions, Bartangi lacks clause-initial subordinators, while clause-internal (second-position and preverbal) conjunctions are predominant. At the same time, some of the conjunctions traditionally viewed as coordinating or clause-initial are better analyzed as final conjunctions or particles. The core of the system of conjunctions in Bartangi consists of t
