Abstract:
AbstractMany scholars have noted the linguistic links and similarities in content between the books of Esther and Jonah, and other biblical books. Some scholars have raised the possibility of a connection between Jonah and Esther themselves. This article will focus on establishing some further points of contact between these two books by comparing the descriptions of the fasting and mourning in Shushan (Esther 4) and Nineveh (Jonah 3). The mourning depicted in both Esther and Jonah should be understood as a petitionary mourning. As I shall demonstrate, there are many points of contact in plot, content and language related to the expressions of mourning in both texts. I will suggest that by creating links between these descriptions, the author of the book of Esther hints at some theological and moral implications that lack in its explicit text.

Abstract:
Abraham L. Shushan worked in the shadow of Huey P. Long. Long’s political machine ran on the force of his personality with political power given as a reward to those he considered loyal. Shushan was one such lieutenant who benefited from his unwavering loyalty to Long. Shushan served within the New Orleans political scene helping Long achieve his goals including building the Shushan Airport on the city’s lakefront as well as being instrumental in the construction of the seawall protecting New Orleans along the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain. By the time he started working for Long, Shushan was already a fixture in New Orleans politics serving on the Orleans Levee Board since 1920. A man of ambition and skill, Huey Long chose Shushan for his political acumen. Shushan’s work for Long cost him his career during the period of “scandal and reform” following the fallout after Long’s assassination in 1935.

Furniss, Elizabeth. "A sobriety movement among the Shuswap Indians of Alkali Lake." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26816.

Full text
Abstract:
Twenty years ago the Shuswap Indian community of Alkali Lake was like many other reserve communities in the northern Interior of British Columbia, with life characterized by high levels of drinking, violence, suicide, accidental death, and child abuse and neglect. In 1973 this pattern of life was challenged by the newly-elected Band chief and his wife. Working as a team, and by drawing upon the powers of the Band Office and applying confrontational tactics, the two initiated an anti-alcohol campaign in the community. For three years the chief and his wife persisted, despite extreme hostility and occasional threats against their lives. In 1976 their efforts began to achieve success. By 1981 most adults on the reserve had become committed to a sober lifestyle, and by 1985 the reserve was essentially "dry". This thesis traces the development of the recent events at Alkali Lake. To refer to these events the term "Sobriety movement" has been used. The movement is analyzed largely from a political processual point of view, with attention paid not to the underlying sources of "deprivation" or "stress" that may have generated the movement, but to the strategies and tactics utilized by the movement leaders to promote their cause. In this manner the resource mobilization approach to the study of social movements provides an analytical framework for this study. Several factors are identified as key ingredients in the success of the Sobriety movement. First, the Band chief and his wife were able to use effectively the powers of the Band Office to impose economic sanctions on drinkers. Second, as community leaders they were able to solicit the aid of powerful outside agencies, namely the R.C.M.P. and the Ministry of Human Resources, to support them in their efforts. Third, the personal resources of the two leaders - their courage, strength and determination -were crucial to the movement's survival during its early years. The success of the Sobriety movement can not be understood simply by looking at the leaders' actions. The social and cultural context within which they operated must also be considered. Three underlying and fundamentally important factors are identified: the pre-existence of a strong sense of community within the Alkali Lake village, the inherent readiness of the Alkali Lake people for new leadership and social change, and the use by the Band chief of a leadership tradition that permitted the application of strict punishment as a means of social control.

Abstract:
Fluid circulation in metamorphic core complex (MCC) were studied in the Apennines Alps (North Italy) and the Shuswap MCC (Canada). The MCC geological structure is characterized by an upper unit juxtaposed with a lower metamorphic unit along a low-angle detachment. The aim of the fluid inclusion study was to determine the nature and pathways of fluids during the late evolution of MCC. Results show the presence of several fluid reservoirs and mixing processes when reservoirs are connected: (i) aqueous-carbonic fluids, with dominant CO2 ± (CH4, N2), and rarely H2S, from a deep origin, typical of fluid-rock interactions in metamorphic formations. (ii) several aqueous fluids, of meteoric or deeper origin, and with variable salinity owing to various degree of interaction with the host rocks. Reconstitution of pressure-temperature conditions during fluid inclusions trapping enables to determine the P-T-x pathway of the different lithotectonic units in late stages of MCC evolution

Abstract:
This chapter explores the use of humor and satire, directed both at the ungainliness of the pregnant body and at the strict “rules” governing the behavior of pregnant women. In the works examined here pain and discomfort are represented explicitly, but also humorously, to emphasize the pregnant woman's subjectivity and acknowledge the complex emotions of pregnancy and childbirth. After considering Ito Hiromi’s quasi-pregnancy advice manual, Yoi oppai, warui oppai (1985), in which she writes about her own pregnancy and childbirth and pushes the boundaries of language, both poetic and mundane, the chapter explores the Go-Shussan! manga series written by female manga writers from 1998 onward. This new visual and emotional vocabulary for the pregnant subject comes not only from the personal insights of the artists but also to the creative re-deployment of the sexually explicit tropes and images of the "Ladies Comics" genre in which each woman first started.

Abstract:
As the key subject of grassroots governance, sub-district offices are imperative to the society’s smooth operation and cities’ healthy development. In practical grassroots governance, sub-district offices inevitably have some drawbacks, such as jumbled institutions, chaotic personnel, and inefficient function implementation, overlapping other organizations or institutions with unclear rights and responsibilities. From the perspective of holistic governance, this paper takes the reform of the Bijiashan Subdistrict Office in the Shushan District of Hefei City as a research case, exploring its reform path and summarizing its practical achievements. After the reform of the Bijiashan Sub-district Office, the structure of horizontal departments is reorganized, and the functions are optimized. In addition, the responsibilities and relationships of its vertical departments turn clear, with the unimpeded instructions issued by the Party Committee. Besides, the feedback from grassroots governance becomes timely and effective, which constitutes a new pattern characterized by “communication from top to bottom, horizontal linkage, stereo alternation, and collaborative governance”. As an epitome of grassroots governance, the reform of the Bijiashan Sub-district Office is helpful to improve and develop the socialist system with Chinese characteristics and promote the modernization of the national governance system and governance capacity.

<p>For several years, and to an increasing extent, BIM techniques have yet been used by Yüksel Proje for the design process of their projects. One of these projects is the Shusha Bridge in Azerbaijan, where, due to its complex geometry, several challenges arose in choosing the right procedures for an efficient application of the used modelling software. A whole series of parametric techniques had to be applied to suitably capture the various structural components. The variability of the geometry of the individual components as well as the detailed tendon layout were recorded with using tables and formulas assigned to the geometric parameters. Advanced techniques such as using Excel sheets and TCL programming complemented the spectrum of applied functionality. Python parts were used for reinforcement modelling and outright assignment of IFC attributes supported data exchange and interoperability.</p>

Abstract:
<p>In 2021 important highway projects started to be implemented in the Karabakh region by the Azerbaijani government. As a part of 81 km Ahmetbeyli-Fuzuli-Shusha Motorway project, three viaducts (V6, V7, and V8) were built using the Incremental Launching Method (ILM). Karabakh is a mountainous region having a challenging geography for roadway construction. At the beginning of the project the three viaducts were designed as classical precast beam structures. Nevertheless, due to the deep valleys where the viaducts are located and the very tight construction schedule, the ILM was eventually retained, considering its advantages in terms of cost and works duration. V6 Left and Right Viaducts have a total length of 295m, V07 Right Viaduct of 185m, V07 Left Viaduct of 130m, V8 Right Viaduct of 350m and V8 Left Viaduct of 405m, with a central span of 55m. The six viaducts have minimum 4.2% and maximum 4.7% longitudinal slope. Due to their geographical conditions and possible access, it has been decided to launch four viaducts (V6 Left, V6 Right, V8 Left, V8 Right) downward and two (V7 Left, V7 Right) upward. Launching decks with such a high longitudinal slope was significant challenge, and special braking system were designed to withstand the sliding forces. In addition, V7 Right and Left viaducts required a particular design, not only because of their longitudinal slope, but also because of their small radius in the highway plan. For these viaducts, the precast sites were specially designed in accordance with the radius of the road requiring two launching jack locations. The guiding devices were resized according to the transverse horizontal forces due to the radius. During the construction, a kinematic study was prepared to determine the locations of the temporary supports on the piers according to each launching stage. Lead Rubber bearings (LRB) were used for the substructure design of the viaducts located in a significant earthquake zone, reducing the earthquake loads and limiting the displacements. Details of the permanent and temporary structures used in the construction phase of these viaducts will be detailed in this paper.</p>
