Abstract:
We present in this paper two new products for high-temperature, low-voltage (2.8V to 5.5V) power management applications. The first product is an original implementation of a monolithic low dropout regulator (XTR70010), able to deliver up to 1A at 230°C with less than 1V of dropout. This new voltage regulator can source an output current level up to 1.5A. The regulated output voltage can be selected among 32 preset values from 0.5V to 3.6V in steps of 100mV, or it can be obtained with a pair of external resistors. The circuit integrates complex analog and digital control blocks providing state of the art features such as UVLO protection, chip enable control, soft start-up and soft shut-down, hiccup short-circuit protection, customer selectable thermal shut-down, input power supply protection, output overshoot remover and stability over an extremely wide range of load capacitances. The circuit offers a fair ±2% absolute accuracy and is guaranteed latch-up free. The second product is an advanced high-temperature, low-power, digitally trimmable voltage reference (XTR75020). Thanks to a custom, 1-wire serial interface, the absolute precision and the temperature coefficient can be adjusted in order to obtain an accuracy better than 0.5% with a temperature coefficient bellow ±20ppm/°C. On-chip OTP memory for trimming of absolute value and temperature coefficient makes the circuit extremely accurate and almost insensitive to drifts over time and temperature. The circuit features a class AB output buffer able to source or sink up to 5mA and remains stable with any load capacitance up to 50μF. The XTR75020 has nine preset possible output voltages. The source and sink short circuit current always remains bellow 25mA. The quiescent current consumption is 300μA typical at 230°C while the standby current is, in all cases, under 20μA. Both devices are designed on a latch-up free silicon-on-insulator process.

Abstract:
Optimal scheduling of distributed energy resources (DERs) of a low-voltage utility-connected microgrid system is studied in this paper. DERs include both dispatchable fossil-fueled generators and non-dispatchable renewable energy resources. Various real constraints associated with adjustable loads, charging/discharging limitations of battery, and the start-up/shut-down time of the dispatchable DERs are considered during the scheduling process. Adjustable loads are assumed to the residential loads which either operates throughout the day or for a particular period during the day. The impact of these loads on the generation cost of the microgrid system is studied. A novel hybrid approach considers the grey wolf optimizer (GWO), sine cosine algorithm (SCA), and crow search algorithm (CSA) to minimize the overall generation cost of the microgrid system. It has been found that the generation costs rise 50% when the residential loads were included along with the fixed loads. Active participation of the utility incurred 9–17% savings in the system generation cost compared to the cases when the microgrid was operating in islanded mode. Finally, statistical analysis has been employed to validate the proposed hybrid Modified Grey Wolf Optimization-Sine Cosine Algorithm-Crow Search Algorithm (MGWOSCACSA) over other algorithms used.

Abstract:
Darryl F. Zanuck produced The Rich Are Always with Us (Alfred E. Green, 1932) for Warner Bros. as a prestige star vehicle for Ruth Chatterton. Set among the New York high society, the picture features characters that, in addition to being wealthy, are clever, witty and well dressed, i.e. the smart set. They are adept at delivering banter in crisp articulate voices, speaking rapidly to signify intelligence, youth and modernity. This ultra-modern film had all the hallmarks of a prestige picture: a major star, a literary adaptation, stylish sets and props, elegant and fashionable costumes designed by Orry-Kelly, and some stunning cinematography by Ernest Haller. Nevertheless, it was shot quickly and cheaply, with a supporting cast made up largely of inexpensive contract players. As much as anything else, it was the rich voices of the cast that lent an air of distinction to this production, exploiting the audience's desire to hear smart talk delivered in voices that were full toned, highly modulated, carefully enunciated and refined. While this is not the kind of film most historians consider typical of Warners in the 1930s considering the likes of The Public Enemy (William Wellman, 1931), 42nd Street (Lloyd Bacon, 1931) and 20,000 Years in Sing Sing (Michael Curtiz, 1933) to be more representative this article reveals that there was a very different side to Warners' output during the early 1930s, one that sought to take advantage of Broadway talent and create articulate movies for upmarket audiences. This article, moreover, suggests that rich voices in talky talkies were a significant part of Warners' production strategy during the early 1930s and that New York's chattering classes provided the perfect subject for prestige talking pictures at this critical time of economic austerity.

Abstract:
A vehicle start/stop engine system is investigated with focus on human perception of discomfort. The FRF between engine rotational acceleration around the neutral torque axis (NTA) and seat rail acceleration with the specific interest in start up and shut down events is estimated from measurements, using a shaker torque excitation. The inverted torque sensitivity formulates a frequency dependent target of powertrain torque related to seat rail acceleration. The main rotation direction for the transversally mounted engine is the pitch-direction, yielding high acceleration levels in both longitudinal x-, and vertical z-direction compared to the lateral y-direction. Specific weighting functions are used to normalize these accelerations to human perception. Acceleration levels in x-, and z-direction at the seat rail are similar after weighting curves have been applied. The amount of discomfort experienced by a person depends on vibration amplitude, frequency, direction and time duration. However, there is no evidence on in what way a specific time dependence affects the perceived comfort. The NTA around which the engine as a rigid body rotates is experimentally estimated and verified by comparing to the reference CAD NTA. The powertrain mounting system center of gravity is assumed to be known from the CAD model. The seat rail is found to be a more convenient measurement position to use in order to achieve reproducible results rather than the seat cushion. This, since the acceleration at the cushion also depends on several other factors such as person size, weight and body posture and also on the non-linear properties of the seat foam padding.

Abstract:

People are creators of their own acts. That is a premise of this thesis. Social contexts offer action alternatives but given their individuality people, to various extents, put the set of alternatives into question, re-shape them and make them into theirs. What people do in their everyday life has political significance. The theories that frame this work focus on how people reappropriate culture and in so doing bring forth infinitesimal changes in society.

I have interviewed seven young women in Beirut who take action to get to do what they desire. Given their social conditions and individuality they find different ways around the prohibitions that they are facing. Organized independently and within networks of foremost relatives they find their ways. They negotiate with family and community, make allies and create paths to 'forbidden' spaces. They seize opportunities and increase their space for a day, night or occasion. Then they accord their life to the surrounding's restrictions – until opportunity strikes again. The women also create an imaginary space where they are ruling queens. From there they tell the surrounding to shut up and fuck off, in there they hope, smile and fall in love.

The thesis then goes on to discuss the socio-political effects of young women's spacing practices. When the women do what they desire they enter, what they claim are, forbidden spaces. Their entry appears to be a threatening force; it diminishes gaps between the 'allowed' and the 'unacceptable' and between the 'good' and 'bad' girl- and womanhood. These practices, sprung from the daily life, challenge the surrounding and young women's spacing is thereby a micro-political phenomenon with subversive potential.

Abstract:
This research project is an answer to the question, “What is the trouble with Gender and Gaming?” Distinguishing between sex and gender, the research examines how players learn to participate in gaming culture through a gendered lens and explores the voices of participant gamers who are learning and dealing with gendered violence and sexism in video games. Specifically, I examined the complicated nature of power, gendered representations/performances and language in gaming. To accomplish this, I used a poststructural feminist theory that I call ‘theory of disruption,’ which utilizes Butler’s (1991) theories on gender performance, Foucault’s (1978) concept of the docile body, and Harraway’s (1991) theory of disruption through the metaphor of the cyborg. Methodologically, I used digital ethnography, where I took on the role of participant-researcher by examining and analyzing my experiences as a video game player, on the one hand, and played with and interviewed 12 avid North American video gamers, all of whom are English speakers, including 8 women and 4 men, on the other. In analyzing my own and the participants’ narratives, gendered violence and sexual violence perpetuated within the context of gaming was deemed as a major deterrent for self-identified female gamers, often leaving them disconnected from the gaming community, and at times driving them to stop playing online games completely. In the case of female gamers, I show, they begin gaming already orienting their performance around a male narrative and in a male-dominated space. Throughout the thesis, we see that the trouble with gender and gaming is how gender is performed in games: cultural limitations, as well as design limitations influenced by culture, restrict players to the point where performativity (i.e. the pattern of gender performance) morphs into gender norms. These norms, I also show, are not left to perpetuate. In many cases, they are disrupted, subverted, dismissed or outright ignored. Nonetheless, I conclude, all gamers, male or female, have to negotiate gendered identities and their storylines as represented and made available by game designers. Approached as a ‘null curriculum’ (Eisner, 1985), video gaming is a site where most people, but particularly young people, invest in their identities and desires, thus turning it into a learning site. Here, particular representations and gendered norms and behaviours are learned. Pedagogically, I therefore conclude, we need to critically engage with it and show its creative as well as its ‘other’ (especially when it comes to female representation) side. Membership to the gaming community, it seems, is open to anyone with a gaming system and a desire to log into play; but if those community members were more attuned to how their actions, words, and conversations impact their greater community, perhaps we would begin to see a version of the gaming culture that is safer and more open to all.

Severance, Samantha Jo. "“I Love You, but Shut Up and Do Something About It.”: An Appraisal Theory Exploration of Tough Love." Thesis, North Dakota State University, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/31701.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to better understand tough love as a communication interaction, specifically focusing on defining and understand tough love from a receiver’s perspective. Thirteen respondents between the ages of 18-28 were recruited from a mid-sized Midwestern university. Flexible in-depth interviews were conducted given the exploratory nature of this study. Lazarus’ Appraisal Theory was used as a lens to better understand tough love as a process. Analysis of the data found that emotions in the primary appraisal phase are often negative, with codes such as hurt, angry, and embarrassed arising in the data. The secondary phase demonstrated the intentionality of this message, with respondents understanding the purpose of tough love as encouraging resilience or teaching a lesson. Reappraisals often occurred when respondents realized the message was tough love. Relational factors such as closeness and authority were determinants in whether this message was received positively or negatively.

Abstract:
This thesis is a history of social and political activism in Charlottesville during the 1960s focusing on new left student organizing at the University of Virginia. It is a work of social history that establishes a community that has been generally ignored in traditional histories of the new left as one of the most influential centers of new left activism in the South and asserts that this prominence was due to years of activism by local liberals, civil rights advocates, and students during the city's unique experiences on the front lines of the southern desegregation, civil rights, and anti-war struggles. It traces the evolution of social activism in the city and the university from the late 1950s through the early 1970s and demonstrates how local activists and issues interacted with regional, national, and global events during one of the most socially tumultuous decades in American history.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between black gospel music and the African American freedom struggle of the post-WWII era. More specifically, it addresses the paradoxical suggestion that black gospel artists themselves were typically escapist, apathetic, and politically uninvolved—like the black church and black masses in general—despite the “classical” Southern movement music being largely gospel-based. This thesis argues that gospel was in fact a critical component of the civil rights movement. In ways open and veiled, black gospel music always spoke to the issue of freedom. Topics include: grassroots gospel communities; African American sacred song and coded resistance; black church culture and social action; freedom songs and local movements; socially conscious or activist gospel figures; gospel records with civil rights themes.

Lamibrac, Adrien. "Étude des dégradations dans les piles à combustible PEMFC pendant les phases de démarrage/arrêt." Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013LORR0117/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This works contributes to the identification of the various degradation mechanisms in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell during start-up and shut-down operations. Single start-ups and shut-downs are first analysed using a cell with segmented cathode current collectors. Thus, internal currents which occur during these operations can be measured. Carbon dioxide measured in the cathode exhaust gas reveals that they result partially from carbon oxidation. Another contribution is the reversible or non reversible redox reactions involving platinum. The heterogeneity of the non reversible platinum oxidation between the inlet and outlet of the cathode is evidenced by the in-situ monitoring of the Electrochemical Surface Area during long-term start-up and shut-down aging protocols. Post-mortem analysis reveals another level of heterogeneity, which concerns also carbon oxidation, between land and channel. From these experiments, it appears also that degradations are more important when gases are injected with a low velocity in the anode compartment and when air is used instead of nitrogen to flush the anode compartment during shut-down. The influence of the MEA characteristics on the extent of the degradation observed during these aging protocols is also analyzed. High platinum loading in the anode and high surface carbon electrodes accelerate the drop of the electrical performances, while increasing the cathode platinum loading limits their decay. Finally, numerical simulations of start-ups complete the experimental results. Reversible platinum oxidation was found to be one of the main contribution to the internal currents

Abstract:
The topic of this thesis is the degradation of fuel cell electrodes in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In particular, the degradation associated with localized fuel starvation, which is often encountered during start-ups and shut-downs (SUs/SDs) of PEMFCs. At SU/SD, O2 and H2 usually coexist in the anode compartment. This situation forces the opposite electrode, i.e. the cathode, to very high potentials, resulting in the corrosion of the carbon supporting the catalyst, referred to as carbon corrosion. The aim of this thesis has been to develop methods, materials and strategies to address the issues associated to carbon corrosion in PEMFC.The extent of catalyst degradation is commonly evaluated determining the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of fuel cell electrode. Therefore, it was considered important to study the effect of RH, temperature and type of accelerated degradation test (ADT) on the ECSA. Low RH decreases the ECSA of the electrode, attributed to re-structuring the ionomer and loss of contact with the catalyst. In the search for more durable supports, we evaluated different accelerated degradation tests (ADTs) for carbon corrosion. Potentiostatic holds at 1.2 V vs. RHE were found to be too mild. Potentiostatic holds at 1.4 V vs. RHE were found to induce a large degree of reversibility, also attributed to ionomer re-structuring. Triangle-wave potential cycling was found to irreversibly degrade the electrode within a reasonable amount of time, closely simulating SU/SD conditions.Corrosion of carbon-based supports not only degrades the catalyst by lowering the ECSA, but also has a profound effect on the electrode morphology. Decreased electrode porosity, increased agglomerate size and ionomer enrichment all contribute to the degradation of the mass-transport properties of the cathode. Graphitized carbon fibers were found to be 5 times more corrosion resistant than conventional carbons, primarily attributed to their lower surface area. Furthermore, fibers were found to better maintain the integrity of the electrode morphology, generally showing less degradation of the mass-transport losses. Different system strategies for shut-down were evaluated. Not doing anything to the fuel cell during shut-downs is detrimental for the fuel cell. O2 consumption with a load and H2 purge of the cathode were found to give around 100 times lower degradation rates compared to not doing anything and almost 10 times lower degradation rate than a simple air purge of the anode. Finally, in-situ measurements of contact resistance showed that the contact resistance between GDL and BPP is highly dynamic and changes with operating conditions.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2019: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2019-90393.

Abstract:
Abstract Recent testing has been performed on a 1 MWe sCO2 closed loop recuperated cycle under funding from the US DOE Sunshot initiative and industry partners. Some of the goals of this funding included the development of a 1 MWe loop, a 10 MWe turbine, and performance and mechanical testing. One of the key challenges that presented itself was the filling, start-up, and shut down of the entire system. Understanding the loop transient performance is important when having to bring a turbine online, transitioning from peak to partial loading, and also managing routine and emergency shut downs. Due to large changes in density near the critical point for CO2 and its tendency to form dry ice when expanded to atmospheric pressure, managing loop filling and venting is critical in ensuring that components do not get damaged. Specific challenges were centered on protecting the dry gas seals, maintaining proper mass in the loop, and also thermal transients during trips. This paper will take a detailed look at the challenges encountered during start up and shut downs, and also the solutions that were implemented to successful transition between different phases of the testing.

Abstract:
An inappropriate design of HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator) may lead to mechanical problems including the fatigue failure caused by rapid load change such as operating trip, start-up or shut down. The performance of HRSG with dynamic analysis should be investigated in case of start-up or shutdown. In this study, dynamic analysis for the HRSG system was carried out by commercial software. The HRSG system was modeled with HP, IP, LP evaporator, duct burner, superheater, reheater and economizer. The main variables for the analysis were the temperature and mass flow rate from gas turbine and fuel flow rate of duct burner for given start-up (cold/warm/hot) and shutdown curve. The results showed that the exhaust gas condition of gas turbine and fuel flow rate of duct burner were main factors controlling the performance of HRSG such as flow rate and temperature of main steam from final superheater and pressure of HP drum. The time delay at the change of steam temperature between gas turbine exhaust gas and HP steam was within 2 minutes at any analysis cases.

Ahmed AlGarf, Yasmine. Harnessing the Power of the Collective: The Women’s Handicrafts Production Cooperative in Aswan, Egypt. Oxfam IBIS, August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2021.7857.

Full text
Abstract:
The Women’s Handicrafts Production Cooperative is a success story that has transformed the lives of its members, who had been finding it hard to obtain employment. They are now focused on creating their own enterprise. Started in 2018, today the cooperative’s membership has expanded tenfold and created employment opportunities by using the principles of social solidarity economy and collective business models. The Youth Participation and Employment (YPE) project in Egypt, developed in partnership with the Better Life Association for Community Development (BLACD), provided technical training to the cooperative in handicrafts production, as well as life skills training, to empower the workers to continue despite all the societal pressure for them to give up. Assistance from BLACD came in when it was needed. Particularly during the COVID-19 crisis, with the tourism market shut down, BLACD has provided crucial technical advice and support, supporting the cooperative to brainstorm and identify several parallel income-generating activities. This case study contains some testimonies from members of the cooperative on how their collective strength was harnessed to create employment and income.
