Abstract:
The Arab tribes locally known as Shuwa Arabs represent a segment of Nigerian society. They came from the Arabian Peninsula for varied aims. And they spoke an Arabic dialect which conforms or differs from other ancient or modern Arabic dialects in many traits which they inherit from their forefathers, which shows that they preserve their Arabic Identity. Although this dialect is strictly following Arabic morphology. But at times they have their unique morphology perhaps it can be traced to some ancient Arabic dialects. Morphology has gained great importance because it helps to understand the meaning of phrases and words through usage. To fathom this fact in the Nigerian Arabic dialects, the researcher tries to tackle this topic by studying the morphological issues which may help to reach what he wants.

Abstract:
This paper hypothesizes that such sociolinguistic identities as Kanuri, Shuwa Arabic, Fulfulde and Wandala which are all Cameroon languages are so much linked to Islam in Northern Cameroon that their development are parallel that of Islam in this part of the country. In order to verify this, observation, three hundred questionnaires and communication with Muslim faithful were used in three Friday mosques in Maroua, Garoua and Ngaoundere, the main cities of this half of the country. The second dimension of Spolky’s (2006) theory on language and religion was used as frame. The paper finds that there is mutuality between these languages and Islam not just due to historical factors, but also because of the influence on the making of a sociolinguistic repertoires and the building of (new) religious communities. As these linguistic identities are reminiscent of Islam, they stand as the main linguistic vehicles of Islam in Northern Cameroon.

Abstract:
As more organisations are expanding in their operations, there has been a strong emphasis on investing in Information Systems (IS). To ensure successful deployment of IS, software developers are advised to apply Information Systems Development Methodologies (ISDMs). The ISDMs provide a systematic approach to development of IS and ensure efficient use of resources during the development process. The stakeholders conducting the software development usually face problems communicating Systems Development (SD) terminologies. The software developers inconsistently use the SD terminologies during software development. Recently a new concept called ontology has been gaining a lot of popularity in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Computational Lingnistics and Database theory. Ontology'S potential is being realized in its ability to capture knowledge into a knowledge-base that could be shared with people within a particular domain area. This study aims at helping the software developers in understanding the different types of terminologies applied when conducting software development. The main objective is to develop an ontology for Information Systems Development Methodologies. The ontology will be used to mediate the meaning ofterminologies of SD. In cases where the development of software is undertaken through outsourcing, the software developers located in different countries can use a similar ontology in order to minimise the misunderstanding in the application of systems development terminologies during the development process. To determine the terminologies to use in the development of the ontology, a qualitative research approach was used. The research is regarded qualitative, as the information gathered for this research will not be expressed in numbers. The research paradigm employed in this research in interpretive in nature. To gather the data, both primary and secondary data collection strategies were employed. Data was gathered through document review and it was coupled with interviews conducted on a software development practitioner and three academics. After the data was collected, it was analyzed using the agreed upon terminologies. The ontology was then developed using a software package called Protege. The study found that software developers still have a misunderstanding on the use of SD terminologies. By developing an ontology for Information Systems Development Methodologies, the software developers can use the ontology to mediate the meaning of the SD terminologies that would minimize the misunderstanding of systems development terminologies when conducting software development.
Thesis (M.Sc. Abstract:
After the Meiji Restoration of 1862, Western philosophy was imported and infused into Japanese culture and its intellectual climate. By the early 20th Century, Kyoto School philosophers and romantic authors sought to reaffirm Japanese culture, believed jeopardised by the hastened development of Western capitalist modernity. This movement became politically charged, and is not without fascist allegations. After the Second World War modernism again became a primary intellectual concern, as modernists and Asianists alike attempted to struggle with the idea of fascism in Japan. Works of Nishida Kitaro (1870-1945) and Watsuji Tetsuro (1889-1960), and the prewar contexts within which they were written, will be compared to the postwar thinkers Maruyama Masao (1914-1996) and Takeuchi Yoshimi (1910-1977). The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Japanese thinkers before and after the Second World War understood and responded to the global process of modernity, and how it relates to such political movements as liberalism and fascism.

Abstract:
Spanish
Ph.D.
This dissertation focuses on the influence of political and social history in the novels of Ana María Shua, an Argentine author who critiques her own contemporary society based upon her nation’s history and her Jewish ancestry. It examines the relationships between individuals, such as parents and children, spouses, or friends to demonstrate that people are unable to change their own situation: the circularity of time and the repetition of the past will always haunt the inhabitants and marginalize them. This work analyzes Shua’s five novels: Soy paciente (1980), Los amores de Laurita (1984), El libro de los recuerdos (1994), La muerte como efecto secundario (1997), and El peso de la tentación (2007). These selected works explore the transformations of the protagonists through their interactions with their environment in order to prove that the individual will remain isolated within the hierarchies and institutions created by contemporary society. The introduction offers an overview of Shua’s biography and literary works as well as an exploration of the connections between the history of Argentina and the author’s novels. Chapter 1 focuses on the influence of history in the present and future of the protagonists in Los amores de Laurita, El libro de los recuerdos, and La muerte como efecto secundario. Chapter 2 makes use of Michel Foucault’s system of power to explore the way in which society victimizes the protagonists. The chapter studies: Los amores de Laurita, La muerte como efecto secundario, and El peso de la tentación. Chapter 3 analyzes the hierarchies established in the institutions and how they convert the body of the individual into a jail. The novels studied include: Soy paciente, La muerte como efecto secundario, and El peso de la tentación. Chapter 4 demonstrates how the history of Argentina is represented in the political and social institutions of El libro de los recuerdos, Soy paciente, and El peso de la tentación. It connects the contemporary desire of a utopian future with Jewish tradition and the hope of a messiah. The conclusions recapitulate the pessimistic, dystopian future that remains for each of the protagonists.
Temple University--Theses

Matsuki, Keiko. "Creating Showa memories in contemporary Japan: Discourse, society, history, and subjectivity." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/187311.

Full text
Abstract:
The present discourse-centered study examines how Japanese people currently in their sixties construct, in and through discourse, their memories of the indigenous historical era called Showa (1926-1989). These contemporaries are particularly called Showa hitoketa ("Showa single digit") since they were born between 1926 and 1934, or during the first nine years (i.e., single-digit years) of the era. As Showa has been often referred to as the "turbulent era" mainly because of its dramatic transformations caused by the nation's defeat in World War II, the generation of Showa hitoketa also has been widely discussed in the postwar Japanese society because of their particular ways of experiencing this historical period. By analyzing their concrete instances of discourses which emerged during our ethnographic interviews, I delineate the dynamic processes of meaning creation, and the interactions between discourse, society, history, and subjectivity. In particular, I focus on the Showa hitoketa informants' personal experience narratives of wartime as significant sites of their Showa memories. Based on my linguistic, semiotic, and interpretive approach to their narrative constructions of the past, I capture how each speaker generates specific experiential meanings, creates particular self-identities, authenticates his/her own memories, and establishes his/her understanding of the era itself. My exploration of the interdependence between text and context inherent in narrative discourse is crucial for the deeper understanding of how the speakers create meaning-filled memories of Showa. By focusing on the metapragmatic functions of signs in narrative discourse, I illustrate how the past is indexically linked to the present, and also how the self is indexically connected to others. The nature of the relationship between these elements is critically important for the investigation of how my informants as Showa historical actors create epistemological, ideological, and affective meanings of their memories. The era of Showa consists of several disjunctive moments for each individual, yet my informants construct their sense of continuity and coherence by transforming their experiences into narrative language.

Abstract:
The present work is a linguistic description of the Shiwa, a Bantu language of northeastern Gabon. Al, Harbi Bandar Eid. "Constitutionalism, constitutionalisation and legitimacy : reforming Al-Shura Council law in Saudi Arabia." Thesis, Brunel University, 2014. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/10606.

Abstract:
Saudi Arabia is being challenged by increasing demands for democratic reform. Although many Saudi citizens desire such change, in order to maintain stability, dramatic and rapid reform is not considered prudent. Nor is the adoption of a Western model of democracy seen as a way forward. Indeed, such a shift would be counterproductive for most Islamic nations. A more measured approach, introducing reforms that build on traditional Islamic democratic ideals, would help to maintain stability and legitimacy for the various stakeholders involved. Consequently, attention has been turned to the ‘Majlis Al Shura’ or the Al-Shura Council, an Islamic Advisory Council that ensures policies and laws follow the principles of Islam. Shura, developed from the Holy Quran, is an ancient practice that has profound significance in Arab culture and history. It provides a framework which ensures scholars and experts from a variety of backgrounds are consulted on issues related to governance. Currently, the role the members play in governance of the Saudi State is decided by the King, who appoints individuals to the Council according to their perceived suitability. However, the Saudi Arabian Al-Shura Council is a highly respected institution. Allowing citizens to elect members, rather than having the King holding the authority to appoint them, would not only be well received, but would create a more effective check on governmental power, help satisfy the demand for more citizen input into public affairs, and pave the way for future, more substantial reform, if desired by Saudi society.

Lessard, Véronique. "Tout un cirque pour si peu : micronouvelles en traduction." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37916.
