Abstract:
In two contemporary Samoan works, Albert Wendt's short story “The Cross of Soot” (1974) and Sia Figiel's novel They Who Do Not Grieve (1999), tattooing produces and proclaims the psychological and social place of the tattoo bearer. The tattoo signals the splitting or doubling of subjectivity, a mechanism by which the individual human subject is produced continually and repeatedly. The Samoan tatau creates not only Samoan subjects but also the English word tattoo and the French tatouage. Wendt and Figiel treat the production and movement of the tattoo in the Pacific and the world; they thus invite a cross-cultural critique of Lacan's theories of subjectivity, which present the tattoo as constitutive of the subject. Whereas Lacan's tattoo is disembodied and nonlocalized, Wendt and Figiel account for the tattoo's material and corporeal effects, its origins in Oceania, and its function in inaugurating a collective Samoan subject. Abstract:
The article deals with analyzing female characters in the WHERE WE ONCE BELONGED by Sia Figiel. The novel is important for students who study postcolonialism and feminism as it gives an insight for gender and race issues. The aim of this article is to show how females in a male-dominated societies are persecuted. Furthermore, females are regarded as inferior according to Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism. The Samoan culture was once colonized by the British. Therefore, the legacy of colonialism and its effects remains there, even after the national independence. It first gives some clarifications about the publishing of the novel and the writer. Then, it comes to the discussion about the colonialism in the novels with its connections to the main characters and how the colonizers were, and also how it affected their lives. In the next part, it explains double colonization. It talks about how almost all of the postcolonial writings were occupied by how women were muted. Then, it recalls how the female characters were suppressed and oppressed by the males and the English dominant power. It shows how they were double-colonized, not having even the freedom to show it.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study reports the potential of Opuntia ficus-indica (Ofi) as a biomonitor of atmospheric pollution in three heavily polluted sites, i.e., industrial, mining and road sites. The bioaccumulation phenomenon by Ofi was investigated by studying the heavy metal concentrations in different cladodes of various ages, roots and fruits, using AAS and ICP-MS. To identify the origin of Pb in cladodes, two types of methods were used: TIMS analysis which provided the lead isotopes ratios in cladodes, roots and soil samples, and SEM-EDX analysis at the cladode surface which provided the elemental distribution of Pb and airborne particles and a characterization of their chemical structure at the microscopic scale. A second study was also carried out by testing Pb bioaccumulation after foliar and roots exposure to synthesized fluorapatite particles enriched with Pb. SEM-EDS and µXRF analyses were used to follow the Pb concentration from the contaminated surface to the internal tissues. The results show that Ofi is indeed a bioaccumulator of Pb, Cd and Cr. The Pb isotopic signatures indicate that Ofi is a sensitive species to local aerial pollution and their successive cladodes obviously identify the evolution of air pollution with time. In addition, Ofi cladodes were found more contaminated with lead after direct foliar contamination. SEM-EDS measurements underlined in the two studies the retention of deposited particles on specific zones of the cladode surface (cuticle, trichome and stomata), which were also identified by µXRF cartography. These results represent the first demonstration of the potential of using Ofi, a cosmopolitan plant, as a biomonitor

Abstract:
The three Polynesian women writers - Florence (Johnny) Frisbie (b. 1932, Cook Islands), Patricia Grace (b. 1937, New Zealand) and Sia Figiel (b. 1967, Samoa) - represent three key stages in the development of Polynesian literature in English that are intrinsically linked to the transforming post-colonial context. Miss Ulysses from Puka-Puka: The Autobiography of a South Sea Trader's Daughter by F. J. Frisbie, published in 1948, is being defined as the founding text of this new literature. The autobiographical work is set in the Polynesian colonial background. Patricia Grace belongs to the first generation of Polynesian authors writing in English. She participates with them in the so-called "Maori Renaissance" that is embedded in the larger pan-Polynesian movement of resistance against British colonial hegemony and of indigenous cultural revivals started in the 1960's. Sia Figiel is a leading writer in the already established Polynesian contemporary literary scene of the 1990's. The region is almost entirely independent by now. The privileged literary themes and the linguistic choices of these three indigenous authors, together with their selected narrative techniques, reflect the on-going political and cultural emancipation of the autochthones. The writers increasingly liberate themselves from the...

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the work of three Indigenous Pacific novelists: Albert Wendt, Sia Figiel, and Epeli Hauʻofa. Wendt, Figiel, and Hauʻofa all come from the anglophone south-west of Oceania, where Indigenous Pacific literature in English first emerged and became established as an academic field of study in the 1970s. The establishment of the University of the South Pacific (USP) in Fiji in 1968 played an important part in their literary trajectories, particularly Wendt and Hauʻofa. The South Pacific Creative Arts Society (SPCAS), founded at USP in 1972, provided publishing opportunities for many emerging writers from the countries served by USP. The chapter examines examples of fiction by Wendt, Figiel, and Hauʻofa, such as Leaves of the Banyan Tree (1979, Wendt), Where We Once Belonged (1996, Figiel), and Tales of the Tikongs (1983, Hauʻofa).

Abstract:
This chapter examines postmodernist and literary experiments in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. It first considers Australia's brand of postmodernism, noting that it was much less a reaction to modernism than an effect of American influences that developed mid-century and a reflection on its late emergence from the colonial condition. It shows that Australian literature and its institutions since the 1930s had maintained a distant and uncomfortable relationship with literary modernism. Key writers discussed include Peter Carey, Gerald Murnane, and Elizabeth Jolley. The chapter goes on to discuss how Canada's scholars and writers, such as Robert Kroetsch, George Bowering and Daphne Marlatt have been interwoven in the genealogy of postmodern fiction in the Americas before concluding with an analysis of the postmodern novel in New Zealand and the South Pacific. Important writers here include Ian Wedde, Albert Wendt, and Sia Figiel.
