Four different class measures (social groups, a socioeconomic classification, a measure by Erik Olin Wright, and a structural class concept) were applied on a gross material of 3252 persons registered by sickness insurance authorities. The measures were compared by description of absence days, average durations, sickness rates, and sex. No significant differences were found. By associating measures and absence days, differences were found only for doctor certified days, where the structural class concept diverged. Background/aims Long-term trends in sickness absence have until now been assumed to be caused by economic cycles, age and gender changes in the workforce, and the success or failure of employers to reduce common causes of absence. This study aimed to identify unexplained patterns in sickness absence data. Methods A rolling 12-month average of sickness absence was used covering the 12 months ending March 2010 through to the 12 months ending October 2019. To determine the largest step increase in sickness absence, the average sickness absence rate was compared between successive 12-month periods

Abstract This article explores ill health and retirement in the Victorian Post Office. Compared to other branches of the Civil Service, ill health was of greater importance as a cause of retirement. Post Office doctors kept careful records of sickness absence, which rose over the period for all workers. These records were also used to determine if employees should be pensioned off on grounds of ill health. Employees in different sections of the Post Office experienced varying levels of sickness depending on their place of employment and the type of work undertaken. Feminisation of the workforc

The payroll-based register data of one hospital district in Finland included objective working hours and SA from 2008 to 2019. The number of night shifts per year was used in group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM). The results indicate that, among those who had any sickness absence episodes, the amount of night work decreased prior to the first SA. The Whitehall studies include a series of papers by Stansfeld et al (1995, 1997a, 1997b) that examine factors predicting sickness absence from work. These include psychological and physical well-being, social support and chronic stressors, including work-related stress. Psychological ill-health is particularly important in terms of sickness absence. It is thought to account for one third of sickness absence (Jenkins, 1985), often results in repeated absences (Taylor, 1968; Ferguson, 1972) and contributes to long spells of certified absence (Stansfeld et al, 1995).
