Abstract:
ABSTRACT Michael Moore's latest polemical documentary is, as this review of Sicko argues, characteristically obstreperous and heartfelt. Moore's indictment of U.S. healthcare is in its ambition comparable to the work of Frederick Wiseman, who also depicts the parlous state of failed institutions.

Abstract Background Treating children with cancer requires multiple different skills. For the healthcare personnel (HCP) in Germany the practice of ongoing training to improve professional skills is almost non-existent. Therefore, we developed a programme called ‘SICKO’ to support HCPs skills and attitudes by means of a multidisciplinary workshop. Methods Following a qualitative analysis, we then designed a modular (3 day) workshop. During day one (8 h) participants learn practical skills, the fundamentals of chemotherapy, and effective communication skills. Workshop day 2 (8 h) includes educa

In his recent film sicko, Michael Moore turns his attention to the crisis in medical care in the United States eventuated by the powerful and wealthy insurance and pharmaceutical companies that control how, when, and if patients experience the broad range of practices we call healing. Moore uses his familiar technique of visiting everyday people and recording their sometimes heartbreaking stories of illness, pitching these narratives against interviews with representatives from large corporations and government agencies.

Few published articles addressed the use of films to teach public health. This article describes our experience using films to teach public health to medical students from 2014 to 2017. Students were randomly allocated to groups and specific movies. Each group had three weeks to show and discuss the film in the classroom. Six films were used. After the exam, students were asked to complete a questionnaire. A Likert scale (1 to 5) was used in each question. The course unit was part of the 5th year of the Masters in Medicine curriculum taught at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar.

Abstract New Diplomatic History in the Premodern Age. An IntroductionThe study of medieval and early modern diplomacy has long been considered one of the most conservative subdisciplines in the field of history. During the last three decades, however, diplomatic history has undergone profound changes. This introductory article shows how these changes were triggered by developments in other disciplines and happened under the influence of the cultural turn. Until recently most general histories of diplomacy were based on the conceptions of Donald Queller and, more particularly, of Garrett Mattin

Corrosion behavior of polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) was investigated in aqueous hydrofluoric acid (HF) and sodium salts (NaCl or Na2SO4). Two oxides (SiCO and SiCNO-(Hf)) and two non-oxide PDCs (SiCN and SiCN-(B)) were examined in this study. The HF acid corroded the oxide PDCs, whereas non-oxide PDCs resisted acid corrosion. Nevertheless, the degradation is slow in some cases to extend the engineering ceramic materials lifespans. The PDCs composites were hot corroded by NaCl or Na2SO4. The Na-salt attacked the PDCs, producing corrosion layers. The cross-sectional X-ray elemental analysis an
