In order to study on the effects of grinding of rail head on rolling contact fatigue of rails, residual stress measurements were conducted for rails processed under different grinding conditions. In this study, residual stresses in rails used for a service line were measured with the method of X-ray stress measurement. The triaxial stress analysis was conducted using a new method for an area detector type X-ray stress analysis proposed by the authors. Four grinding conditions were used to rail specimens. The distributions of residual stresses in the surface layer of the rail head were obtained

Objective: To reduce side wear of rail elements of side track backing-up rail. Methods: Comparative and computational methods were applied in the study. Results: It was detected that in order to extend the pointwork turnout curve service life, it is necessary to reduce the side impact on an outer rail by using rail pads of diverse elasticity. Practical importance: Application of rail pads of diverse elasticity under the outer and inner rails of a pointwork turnout curve makes it possible to increase the speed of rolling stock movement on the side direction of pointwork and increase the life of

The paper tests the rail profiles of Shanghai-Nanjing PDL after its rail pre-grinding. The grinding values are counted, which shows that the grinding mainly occurs on the inner side of rail top, ranging from 0 to 1.26mm. Wheel-Rail Contact Geometry is also analyzed. Results shows that after pre-grinding, the wheel-rail contact points concentrate to the center of rail top, and it is good for rail wear control. But the rolling radius difference decreases and it weakens the rails ability of return the wheels position.

The main property of the railway system is infrastructure objects and rolling‐stock. Holding any kind of a property requires huge expenses and renovation investments. Intensive wearing of the rails on the track curves is observed. This problem is always topical in railways. In this article a possibility to decrease wear of rails on curves is analysed. The purpose of the authors’ research was to estimate the influence of rail wearing on the track widening and permissible deviations on curves when radius is less than 650 m. Major metropolitan areas throughout the United States provide Light Rail Transit (LRT) services. What distinguishes the light rail system is that it operates on city streets with grade crossings within city limits. Consequently, the injury rates of the light rail systems are higher than for example the heavy rail systems. Light rail vehicles have different types of seats arrangements as: forward-facing seats, aft-facing seats, side-facing seats, and so forth. Although, side-facing seats are not the most common type of seats, they represent more than 17% of total number of current LRV seats. Di

The increasing of traffic and operation speed in urban transits has accelerated the degradation of track components. Rail wear, especially extended side wear of the high rail on sharp curves has caused rail premature failure. The factors that contributing to the rail side wear should be investigated in order to seek possible solutions to extend the rail service life and reduce maintenance cost. The rail wear is caused by the aggressive contact between the wheel and the rail. Rail cant directly affects the wheel-rail contact and the values varies depending on the choice of the transit agencies.
