Abstract:
La traduction et le commentaire proposés de Sidoine, Lettres 8.3.1 début par Alan Cameron approchent à grands pas du statut d’orthodoxie, en partie grâce à leur adoption chez Van Hoof et Van Nuffelen. Pour autant, un nouvel examen de l’original enrichi de ce qui manque chez tous les trois, à savoir un commerce prolongé avec Sidoine, offre d’ample motifs de désaccord. D’autre part, leur exégèse ne défend guère le verbiage débridé dont on accable l’évêque. Il y a donc motif de soupçonner le texte d’être gâté. Pour la première fois, un effort vigoureux est produit pour en clarifier à la fois les idées et la phraséologie conformément à l’usus sidonien.

Abstract:
La thèse analyse, à travers l’examen de la correspondance de Sidoine Apollinaire, le rôle fondamental que ce dernier a joué lors de la grande crise et de l’effondrement de l’Empire Romain d’Occident et, surtout, sa position assumée dans le face à face avec des populations barbares. On considére les lettres de Sidoine principalement comme un témoignage de la manière dont la nobilitas de ce temps s’est adaptée à la nouvelle situation politique et sociale, mais aussi comme une source de références à valeur documentaire. À l’apogée du déclin des institutions impériales et devant le désintérêt de l’administration centrale pour les incursions continues et les dévastations, les représentants de la vieille nobilitas sénatoriale se font le rempart des communautés: c’est l’avènement de la figure de l’évêque-sénateur qui, par le biais de l’acquisition d’une charge épiscopale, obtient ce pouvoir d’action et ce suivi que les carrières politiques traditionnelles ne garantissent plus et, lors de la formation des royaumes barbares, se fait l’intermédiaire des exigences de la cité qui est sous sa juridiction. Sidoine est un exemple emblématique de ce phénomène: par le biais de la correspondance qu’il entretient avec les plus hauts personnages de la vie ecclésiastique et culturelle, on trace le cadre des évolutions de la société du temps ainsi qu’un témoignage sur sa façon de se colleter au barbare, senti comme une altérité menaçante qui nécessite pour s’en défendre non seulement qu’on participe activement à la résistance armée mais aussi qu’on s’adonne à l’étude inépuisable et consciente du patrimoine littéraire et culturel qui forme le fondement de cette Romanitas dans laquelle il se reflète.Sans négliger la partialité du point de vue de l’auteur et le caractère profondément littéraire de l’œuvre prise en considération, on les traite aussi comme des témoignages fondamentaux de l’ambiance culturelle à laquelle appartient l’évêque d’Auvergne, intellectuel raffiné ayant reçu une formation rhétorique et scolaire soignée et qui réussit à se tailler un champ d’action dans la réalité qui l’environne
The thesis analyses Sidonius Apollinaris' Letters in order to shed light on his perception of the so-called 'Barbarians' during the period of transition from Roman imperial institutions to the Romano-barbarian Kingdoms. In the V century AD, due to imperial central administration's indifference to barbaric incursions and devastations, exponents of ancient senatorial nobilitas stood up for their communities by holding the episcopal seat; by so doing, senatorial bishops kept the authority which traditional political offices could not ensure anymore and defended the needs of their communities. Sidonius Apollinaris is the major symbol of this phenomenon. His letters, addressed to the main personalities of his time, depict a portrait of the social developments occurred in that period and of the approach of Gallo-Roman aristocracy towards the Barbarians; the armed resistance and the study of Roman literary and cultural heritage appear to Gallo-Roman aristocracy the only way to save the principle of identity, which lays under the label of Romanitas. The work determines which literary schemes Sidonius uses to interpretate his political and social environment; his letter collection is examined as a mirror of his time thanks to its literary dimension, not despite it, and the literary filter itself is seen as a primary source. This critical methodological approach has been adopted to answer to all research questions as far as 'Identity' and 'Otherness' are concerned, in order to give a definition of 'Barbarian' and 'Roman Citizen'

Abstract:
Ce travail de doctorat s'inscrit dans le champ d'étude de l'histoire des identités religieuses et culturelles et a pour objectif premier d'analyser comment l'oeuvre poétique et épistolaire de Sidoine Apollinaire éclaire la spécificité de l'identité chrétienne gauloise durant la période tardo-antique ; il s'agit aussi de montrer comment ce corpus contribue à définir une identité sociale et religieuse dans la Gaule chrétienne au Ve siècle, en tenant compte des renoncements et des compromis culturels qu'implique la conversion. Nous nous intéressons notamment aux évolutions de la christianité qui sont perceptibles au cours des années d'activité de Sidoine Apollinaire qui se présente comme une source de premier plan sur ces questions puisqu'il est d'abord apparenté à l'élite sociale laïque, puis au monde clérical gaulois, sphères entre lesquelles il nous permet de mettre en évidence les rapports de continuité ou de rupture. Cette approche adopte une démarche diachronique et inscrit en premier lieu l'auteur dans le contexte historique et géographique d'un christianisme occidental qui trouve son ancrage à Rome, mais qui dispose de centres de rayonnement en Gaule, à une époque qui est encore exposée aux mutations culturelles et religieuses. Deux problématiques de recherches ont orienté notre propos : Quelle christianité se forge en Gaule au Ve siècle, et quels sont les faciès de cette religion d'après Sidoine, son réseau, ses lectures? Quels renoncements et quels compromis implique la conversion chrétienne à l'égard des composantes de l'ancien monde, qu'elles soient d'ordre idéologique, sociale ou esthétiques ?
This dissertation examines how poetic and epistolary works of Sidonius Apollinaris brings light upon christian Gaul identity during late Antiquity, and how this author takes part in defining it. This essay focuses on christian speeches, behaviours and duties towards former culture and especially pagan background, paying peculiar attention to claims of renunciation and actual compromises towards past patterns. This essay firstly tries to paint a picture of fifth-century christianity in Gaul, studying how and how much the religio noua has penetrated gallic provincies, and showing remanence of heterodox and «pagan» believes. It also examines the cultural continuity and discontinuity that occurs during religious transition from laity to conversion and clerical status, for which Sidonius Apollinaris, belonging first to lay social élite, then to thee cleric world, appears like a key-figure. This work especially focuses on the importance of poems-writing to enhance a christian identity but also to express one's nostalgic attachement to the ancient world, its litterature, its culture and its erstwhile pleasures

Abstract:
This thesis takes the form of a commentary with accompanying material on Sidonius Apollinaris' Carmina 1 and 2, the preface poem and panegyric dedicated to the emperor Anthemius and delivered in 468 AD. The Preface outlines the material available on Sidonius and the approach which critics have made, and sets out the methodology of this commentary. In the Introduction, § 1 examines the historical context, the situation in the western empire which led to the necessity of appointing an eastern nominee as emperor in the west, and the circumstances which led to Sidonius' delivery of the panegyric at Anthemius' inauguration as consul. § 2 is an analysis of the function and form of panegyric in late antiquity, and the particular use to which Sidonius put the genre. examines Sidonius' use of imitatio, and the usefulness of lists of loci similes as a critical tool. The main body of the work is a line-by-line commentary on the two poems, highlighting Sidonius' manipulation of material for political purposes, while he yet operated within a traditional framework. A close examination is made of lexical usage, pinpointing many creative variations on earlier precedents. Sidonius has often been compared unfavourably with Claudian, but close comparison of apparently similar passages reveals that the aims and approaches of the two authors are different, and that Sidonius is a greater exponent of visual effect and word-play than Claudian. The thesis closes with an index of all Latin words discussed in the commentary.

Abstract:
Bishop, diplomat, letter-writer, poet and saint, Sidonius Apollinaris was an incredibly influential author in fifth-century Gaul. In Sidonius’ epistles literary allusions are employed to great and varying effect. This thesis examines Sidonius’ use of literary allusions in selected epistles, chosen to show the variety of their use. The first chapter examines how Sidonius alludes to programmatic remarks by other authors to develop his own unique programmatic message. Chapter two argues that Sidonius’ allusions in Ep. 1.5 (which describes his journey from Gaul to Rome in 467CE) amount to a critique of the destabilization of the Roman Empire in the West. The third chapter argues. Sidonius’ response to the controversial Gallic presbyter and philosopher Claudianus Mamertus carefully avoids philosophical debate by praising him in deliberately superficial terms, using allusions to refute and distance himself from Claudianus’ polemical claims with minimal offense. Chapter four analyses Sidonius’ allusion to a plethora of other descriptions of buildings and art in Latin literature to create a complex ecphrasis of his villa which balances claims for humility with aristocratic display. The final chapter argues that Sidonius uses literary allusions in his last letters to ameliorate the reception of his early poetic career by linking his poetics to his prose corpus. These letters have been chosen to demonstrate the broad range of authors and texts which constitute Sidonius’ allusions; to show his use of allusions cover a range of literary strategies; and to demonstrate his literary reaction to changing events, spanning his epistolary career, from the first letter of book one circulated in the 460s, to the last letter of book nine, distributed in the last years of his life in the 480s. During this period Sidonius became a bishop, Clermont-Ferrand fell to the Visigoths, and the last Roman emperor in the West held office.

D’Ausone à Ennode de Pavie, de nombreux hommes de lettres de l’Antiquité tardive ont conjugué une production épistolaire abondante avec la rédaction d’épigrammes.. Ennode de Pavie a d’ailleurs organisé le recueil complet de ses œuvres autour d’une alternance entre épigrammes et lettres, mettant ainsi en relief la relation étroite, véritable dialogue générique, qui se noue entre l’épigramme et la lettre. Cependant, malgré ces nombreux points communs, les travaux critiques ont dans l’ensemble négligé d’en conduire l’étude de façon parallèle. C’est à ce projet original que nous entendons consacrer notre thèse. Tout d’abord, nous nous penchons sur l’aspect stylistique de cette contiguïté générique, à travers les critères communs de breuitas et d’humilitas, ainsi que sur la prédominance d’une certaine forme de maniérisme. Nous penchant ensuite sur l’aspect social et communicationnel des deux genres, nous les rapprochons en tant que media adoptant un système communicationnel commun et des lieux de créations sociaux identiques. Enfin, comme terme de notre logique comparative, nous incluons la contiguïté entre lettre et épigramme dans une réflexion plus large sur le phénomène général d’hybridation qui sous-tend cette époque. Ce dernier mouvement consiste dans l’étude de formes hybrides, mêlant lettre et épigramme, dans une perspective à la fois stylistique, littéraire et ecdotique, mais également dans l’étude d’une autre forme d’hybridation littéraire présente dans les deux genres : le bilinguisme où grec et latin se mêlent et se réinventent dans une époque de transition culturelle
From Ausonius to Ennodius of Pavia, including Paulinus of Nola, Symmachus and Sidonius Apollinaris, many men of letters, in late Antiquity, wrote both letters and epigrams. Besides, Ennodius himself has organized his complete work alternating epigrams and letters, and highliting the close connection between those two genres. However, despite theirs numerous common features, the critics did not bother to draw a parrallel between them. Thus, we want to devote ourselves to this original point of view. First of all, we study the stylistic aspect of this generic connection, through two main common criteria. One the one hand, the breuitas and the humilitas, and in the other hand, the predominance of a certain form of mannerism. Then, considering the social and communicational aspects of those genres, we bring them together as medias adopting a common communicationnal system, and using the same places of creation. Finally, we include our reflexion in a broader one, about the phenomenon of genre-switching in Late Antiquity. This final movement consists in a studic of hybrid forms, in an ecdotic, stylistic point of view, but also in the study of latin-grec bilingualism
