Abstract:
AbstractThis article analyzes the interplay between Nazi cultural politics and regional identity in the Palatinate region of Germany through the lens of the Ludwig Siebert program. Created by Bavarian Minister-President Ludwig Siebert in the early 1930s to stimulate the regional construction industry, this program involved the conservation of medieval castles and ruins in Bavaria and the Palatinate. The renovation of these monuments, which had been central to the cultural memory and identity of Pfälzers since at least the nineteenth century, proved to be effective in mobilizing the local populace for Siebert's aims and, consequently, for the goals of the Nazi regime. Because its melding of cultural politics and regional identity helped to stabilize the regime in the Palatinate during its early years, the Siebert program provides a particularly illustrative microhistorical case study of the Nazi regime's mechanisms for creating the Volksgemeinschaft in the provinces. By focusing on the Palatinate town of Annweiler, which sits at the foot of the storied Trifels castle, a favored renovation project of Siebert's, this article offers a closely observed demonstration of these mechanisms at work.

Abstract:
We explain how to form a novel dataset of Calabi–Yau threefolds via the Gross–Siebert algorithm. We expect these to degenerate to Calabi–Yau toric hypersurfaces with certain Gorenstein (not necessarily isolated) singularities. In particular, we explain how to ‘smooth the boundary’ of a class of four-dimensional reflexive polytopes to obtain polarised tropical manifolds. We compute topological invariants of a compactified torus fibration over each such tropical manifold, expected to be homeomorphic to the general fibre of the Gross–Siebert smoothing. We consider a family of examples related to products of reflexive polygons. Among these we find $14$ topological types with $b_2=1$ that do not appear in existing lists of known rank-one Calabi–Yau threefolds.

Abstract:
On the morning of October 21, 1941, the custodian of Odessa's Museum of Western Civilization summoned twenty-three-year-old Eugenie Anissimoff and her middle-aged mother to lead an unusual and most demanding tour group. Having fled the besieged metropolis weeks earlier to their former residence in suburban Odessa, the two women had returned to their bombed-out apartment in the recently occupied city. Homeless, the pair had sought refuge with the museum's caretaker, an old family friend. Unable to communicate with the delegation of SS and Wehrmacht officers who queued for admission, the Russian-speaking janitor hoped that the two Volksdeutsche women would help to disarm the menacing visitors by granting them a German-language tour. Although ostensibly to inspect the building for booby traps, the visit's true purpose became clear as the Germans began loading paintings, rugs, and even a golden saddle into their vehicles. At the conclusion of the tour-cum-robbery, the group's leader, SS-Obersturmführer Dr. Klaus Siebert, thanked the two women and complimented their excellent German. Hearing of their dire situation, Siebert advised Anissimoff and her mother to register for support at the local SS-run Volksdeutsche Mittelstelle, or Ethnic German Liaison Office (hereafter VoMi), bureau in a former music conservatory on Novovlaskaia Street.

Abstract:
Abstract Given a growing body of evidence for the developmental relevance of the perceived experience of aging and for the presence of interindividual variability in the way people experience aging, this symposium examines the determinants and outcomes of various subjective aging constructs. This session will explore the role of various psychological variables in explaining variability in subjective aging experiences. Consequences of various subjective aging concepts on cognitive functioning, emotional and physical well-being will also be discussed. The first two presentations examine Attitudes Toward Own Aging (ATOA). Kornadt, Siebert and Wahl will address the developmental co-dynamics of personality and ATOA across the second half of life. Siebert and Wahl will examine the associations of ATOA with subjective and objective cognitive functioning. The last two presentations focus on awareness of age-related change (AARC). Sabatini, Silarova, Collins, Martyr, Ballard, Anstey, Kim & Clare will present findings from a systematic-review and meta-analysis synthesizing and quantifying associations of awareness of age-related change (AARC) with emotional and physical well-being and cognitive functioning. Finally, Rothermund and de Paula Couto will show how both the experience of positive and/or negative changes (gains and losses) and the presence of positive and/or negative age stereotypes predict individual’s attributions of change to age. This last presentation will also examine how together the presence of change and attribution of change to age predict developmental outcomes. The symposium will conclude with summarizing remarks from the discussant who suggests possible directions for future research on determinants and outcomes of perceived experience of aging.

Euclea sekhukhuniensis Retief, Siebert A.E.van Wyk. a new species with a restricted range in Sekhukhuneland, South Africa, is described, illustrated and compared with other members of the genus. It is a gregarious geoxylic sufthitex forming large, much-branched colonies. The species is closely related to the small tree/shrub E. linearis Zeyh. ex Hiem from which it can be distinguished by its larger fruits, broader leaves and exclusively suffrutex growth form. Geographical range and habitat preference also differ between the two taxa. E. sekhukhuniensis is endemic to the Sekhukhuneland Centre of Plant Endemism, where it is confined to the calcareous, heavy-metal soils of the Steelpoort River Valley.

Lücke, Bärbel. "Von der Nachkriegszeit zur heutigen BRD. Die Dialektik von Erinnern und Vergessen, Verdrängen und Verschweigen im Lichte von Allegorie, Symbol, Parodie und Dekonstruktion: Zu Frank Witzels Roman Direkt danach und kurz davor." Literatur für Leser 41, no. 1 (January 1, 2018): 69–85. http://dx.doi.org/10.3726/lfl.2018.01.06.

Full text
Abstract:
The past is never dead. It’s not even past“ – wir haben William Faulkner im Kopf). Through The Skin Of Our Teeth“.

Abstract:
The concept of media systems in the twentieth century cannot be applied to the idea of media systems in the 21st century. As the media system is dominated by the Four Press Theory (Siebert et al. 1956), a new theory has been developed in line with the development of media technology, McQuail's Media Normative Theory (2010). McQuail's Media Normative Theory (2010) introduces four media system models, a liberal pluralist or market model, social responsibility or public interest model, a professional media model / a professional model and an alternative media system model. Alternative media model '. As such, this paper aims to draw comparisons between the current model of the Malaysian media system and China, based on the variables of independence, government intervention and control over recent research.

Abstract:
This paper studies the (small) quantum homology and cohomology of fibrations p:P→S2 whose structural group is the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms of the fiber (M, ω). It gives a proof that the rational cohomology splits additively as the vector space tensor product H*(M)⊗H*(S2), and investigates conditions under which the ring structure also splits, thus generalizing work of Lalonde–McDuff–Polterovich and Seidel. The main tool is a study of certain operations in the quantum homology of the total space P and of the fiber M, whose properties reflect the relations between the Gromov–Witten invariants of P and M. In order to establish these properties we further develop the language introduced in [22] to describe the virtual moduli cycle (defined by Liu–Tian, Fukaya–Ono, Li–Tian, Ruan and Siebert).

Abstract:
Leguminous crops represent a potentially valuable source of protein and energy for the ruminant. They promote higher levels of microbial activity in the rumen than most other feeds (Agricultural Research Council, ARC, 1984), probably because of their content and rate of release of nutrients. Thus, they may be useful supplements for low quality roughages. Levels above 0.15 - 0.20 long or chopped legume hay included in low quality roughage based diets result in a reduction in the intake of the basal roughage (Lane, 1982; Minson and Milford, 1967; Mosi and Butterworth, 1985; Siebert and Kennedy, 1972). This substitution effect may be due to a rumen physical limitation and/or a limiting nutrient supply for the rumen micro-organisms. The objective of this work was to study the effect of supplementing straw with lucerne pellets on the digestion kinetics and intake of the dietary components.

Abstract:
The mitochondrial DNA control region of six cobitids and two catostomids was sequenced and compared with sequences of other cypriniforms to study their sequence variations. The extended termination associated sequence (ETAS) domain, central domain, and conserved sequence block (CSB) domain were partitioned and the ETAS sequence, CSB-D, CSB-E, ECSB-F, CSB1, CSB2, and CSB3 were identified. It is suggested that the "hairpin" TACAT-ATGTA is the key sequence of ETAS and GACATA is the symbol of CSB1. Phylogenetic analysis based on the CSB domain showed that all cyprinids evolved as one monophyletic group, while the non-cyprinid Cypriniformes could be another monophyly that is in accordance with the hypothesis proposed by Siebert. Further analysis of the phylogeny of the Cobitoidei was also conducted and it is tentatively suggested that their relationships are Catostomidae + (Gyrinocheilidae + (Botiinae + (Homalopteridae + (Cobitinae + Nemacheilinae)))).

Abstract:
The article proposes an analysis of the critical arguments expressed by N.I. Sieber regarding the concept of value, which is accepted by economists of the subjective school. Sieber made these critical arguments in his dissertation, published in 1871. However, they remain valid for Marginalism, the principles of which basically continue the line of the subjective school (Leon Walras was among the authors cited by Sieber). In the analysis of Sieberʼs position, not only logic was taken into account, but also the rhetoric of his argumentation, which makes it possible to identify a broader context within which this position remains relevant. Sieber criticizes the views of economists of the subjective school from the standpoint of the classical school. The latter, as the basis for the constitution of value, considers the average, typical state of economic life, while the former is based on the consideration of an isolated, exceptional moment – that is, the moment when a radical change in the parameters of economic activity takes place. To describe this «exceptional moment», Sieber uses a number of metaphorical images, such as state of siege, threats to life and health, the situation of immigrants, etc. Sieberʼs use of these images allows us to compare his arguments with a number of the most important positions of political theorists of the 20th century (K. Schmitt, W. Benjamin, M. Foucault, G. Agamben) associated with such concepts as «sovereignty», «state of exception», «bare life». As a result, Sieberʼs perspective can be viewed as an anticipation of the modern criticism of neoliberalism – an ideology in which the marginalist understanding of the economy is used as an essential resource for the formation of a biopolitical paradigm for managing peopleʼs lives.

This article shows how representatives of various theoretical currents in economics at different times in history interpreted the efforts of Nikolay Sieber in defending and developing Marxian economic theory and assessed his legacy and role in forming the Marxist school in Russian political economy. The article defines three stages in this process: publication of Sieber’s work dedicated to the analysis of the first volume of Marx’s Das Kapital and criticism of it by Russian opponents of Marxian economic theory; assessment of Sieber’s work by the narodniks, “Legal Marxists”, Georgiy Plekhanov, and Vladimir Lenin; the decline in interest in Sieber in light of the growing tendency towards an “organic synthesis” of the theory of marginal utility and the Marxist social viewpoint.

Abstract:
In 1995, when discussing the critiques of the New York Times made by academics and pundits, Michael Schudson stated that the newspaper has never been anything ‘like the late, unlamented Pravda’. This comparison, utilized in a variety of ways over time, originated in the canonical Four Theories of the Press (Siebert et al., 1963[1956]). This juxtaposition, more broadly, uses the Cold War ‘Other’ to define what western journalism is, or should be, by what it is not. Building on the theoretical insights of Fredrik Barth and Edward Said, this article traces the construction of this ‘Other’ in the study of western journalism. Ultimately, the author argues that the use of this ‘Other’ in the construction of a coherent, meaningful definition of western journalism, and in the explication and justification of journalistic practice therein, constitutes a problematic guide in thinking about the development of journalism in nations that were historically part of this ‘Other’.

Abstract:
Two important factors for understanding the physical nature of compact steep spectrum (CSS) radio sources are determining the correct radio morphological classification of these objects together with their characteristics in wavebands different from the radio (Fanti et al. 1995, A&A, 302, 317). Seven CSS sources (linear dimensions < 30kpc for Ho = 50 kms–1Mpc–1 and α > 0.5, S ≃ v–α) have been found in a complete sample of strong southern radio sources. This group of CSS sources is particularly interesting because some optical and X-ray information is already available as part of a more general study of southern radio sources (Morganti et al. & Siebert et al. these Proceedings). The spectra of all the sources were presented in Tadhunter et al. (1993, MNRAS, 263, 999.) Here we present VLBI observations for three of these sources (0252-71, 1306-09 and 1814-63). The remaining four have already been imaged with VLBI (King et al. these Proceedings).

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article deals with the epistolary heritage of Nikolaj Ivanovich Sieber (1844–1888), who was a representative of the classical political economy and a follower of Ricardo and Marx. Since Sieberʼs personal archive has not survived, the legacy is presented in twentytwo letters, which he addressed mainly from Europe to Pyotr Lavrov, Rosalia Idelson, Pyotr Kropotkin, Pavel Axelrod, and to his closest friends and colleagues – Alexander Chuprov and Ivan Yanzhul. Collected from the archives of St. Petersburg, Moscow and Amsterdam, Sieberʼs letters shed light on the circle of his correspondents, the nature of relations with publishers and editors, and clarify a number of issues of his theoretical legacy. In the context of the debate about the nature of Sieberʼs Marxism, the letters reinforce the position that he was a consistent theoretical Marxist and adherent of classical political economy. The details connected with the publication of the book «Essays on the Primitive Economic Culture» are extremely important. For researchers, it remained not entirely clear why Sieber never introduces the concept of «economic culture» and practically did not use it in his work. Correspondence with Yanzhul made it clear that the author proposed a different title – «Economics and Law of Primitive Society». This title clearly corresponds to the logic of the book, since it focuses primarily on the comparison of two spheres of the evolution of primitive, pre-state society strictly interconnected: economic institutions and legal relations. In general, the letters of Sieber indirectly confirmed the thesis that he was a consistent Marxist before the appearance of Marxism and an economist-anthropologist before the advent of economic anthropology.

Abstract:
Unlike other organs the energy requirement of the brain is met almost exclusively by aerobic glucose degradation (Siesjo, 1978). The energy requirement of the brain is 20–30% of the whole organism at rest, although its weight is only 2%. The energy stores in the brain are extremely small when compared with the high rate of glucose utilisation: thus the brain is reliant on a continuous glucose supply. Only about 30% of glucose is required for direct energy production; much of the remainder is used for the synthesis of amino acids, peptides, lipids and nucleic acids (Siebert, Gessner & Klasser, 1986). Thus a source of glucose is essential for the synthesis of physiologically active amines such as serotonin, noradrenaline and acetylcholine. Although it is well accepted that hypoglycaemia can result in the disruption of cognitive functioning, this is a rare phenomenon and it has usually been assumed that levels of blood glucose, within the normal range, do not influence intellectual functioning. This assumption is discussed in this paper.
