Abstract:
The prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has increased recently leading to the need for novel, natural antibacterial agents such as plant-synthesized silver nanoparticles. Such synthesis is safe, cheap, rapid, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. In this study, characterization of biosynthesized silver nanoparticles from extracts of A. sieberi and C. procera was carried out using transmission electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared and energy dispersive x-ray analysis. Spherical nanoparticles with an average size was ~10 nm for A. sieberi and ~14 nm for C. procera were synthesised; synthesis was most effective using A. sieberi. Antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles was carried out using the agar-diffusion method and by determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration. Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA, Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli, with silver nanoparticles extracts from A. sieberi being the most antibacterial.

Abstract:

The dissertation presents the prototype of an agent-oriented, domainspecificlanguage ALAS. The basic motives for the development of theALAS language are support for distributed non-axiomatic reasoning, as wellas enabling the interoperability and heterogeneous mobility of agents, because it is concluded by analysing existing agent-oriented, domainspecificlanguages, that there is no language that supports theserequirements. The improvement compared to similar existing agentoriented,domain-specific languages are also reflected in programconstructs offered by ALAS language, whose the main purpose is to enablewriting the concise agents that are executed in specific domains.

Abstract:
Print-media needs of Hispanics in non-metropolitan areas of America are often overlooked. One newspaper editor in Idaho found Hispanics to be invisible in her small community and its newspaper, except in crime reports. So she began publishing the bilingual Idaho Unido. This study addresses the publisher’s business model and motivation for publication. It is based on two research streams: theories of the press from Siebert, Peterson, and Schramm in 1956 through McQuail in 2005 and cultural maintenance perspectives. The Idaho Unido story represents a revelatory case, demonstrating the power of a motivated individual to essentially subvert the dominant media paradigm by creating a successful, independent publication specifically intended to serve the information, entertainment and cultural-identity needs of a small, marginalized population living in widely distributed rural areas.

Abstract:
Cavity receivers used in solar power towers and dish concentrators may lose considerable energy by natural convection, which reduces the overall system efficiency. A validated numerical receiver model is desired to better understand convection processes and aid in heat loss minimization efforts. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate heat loss predictions using the commercial computational fluid dynamics software packages FLUENT 13.0 and SolidWorks Flow Simulation 2011 against experimentally measured heat losses for a heated cubical cavity model [1] and a cylindrical dish receiver model [2]. Agreement within 10% was found between software packages across most simulations. However, simulated convective heat loss was under predicted by 45% for the cubical cavity when experimental wall temperatures were implemented on cavity walls, and 32% when implementing the experimental heat flux from the cavity walls. Convective heat loss from the cylindrical dish receiver model was accurately predicted within experimental uncertainties by both simulation codes using both isothermal and constant heat flux wall boundary conditions except at inclination angles below 15° and above 75°, where losses were under- and over-predicted by FLUENT and SolidWorks, respectively. Comparison with empirical correlations for convective heat loss from heated cavities showed that correlations by Siebers and Kraabel [1] and for an assembly of heated flat plates oriented to the cavity geometry [3] predicted heat losses from the cubical cavity within experimental uncertainties, while correlations by Clausing [4] and Paitoonsurikarn et al. [8] were able to do the same for the cylindrical dish receiver. No single correlation was valid for both receiver models. Different turbulence and air-property models within FLUENT were also investigated and compared in this study.

Abstract:
Diesel fuel consist of several hundreds of substances on organic basis. Experimental and numerical investigationsof this multicomponent fuel are hard to interpret in detail, since the behavior of the multicomponent mixture is complex. Physical and chemical data of this system is not available under engine relevant conditions. Instead, fundamental research substitutes diesel with pure substances, where a big database exists.Prior work already showed, that overall spray propagation (including vapor phase) is nearly independent on the injected fuel. This is due to the high air entrainment at present diesel engine conditions (very high injection pressure and dense ambient atmosphere). The high air entrainment shortly behind the nozzle exit (within the first 5 mm penetration) creates a situation where properties of the ambient gas dominate the spray propagation resulting in similar mass and momentum distributions even for different fuels, if the injection conditions are kept constant. On the other hand, the liquid length is clearly different for different fuels, so that location and time of the phase change differ with consequences on the time available for mixture formation in the gas phase. The paper describes the liquid length as a function of the enthalpy necessary for the phase transition (given by the fuel and fuel temperature at injection) and the injection conditions (ambient gas properties, injector design and injection pressure). We compare two different models describing the enthalpy balance. Siebers et al. presented “Model I”, where mass transfer dominates the enthalpy transfer and evaporation takes place. In our own “Model II” evaporation is suppressed, resulting in a heat transfer driven enthalpy transfer without mass transport. The calculations are validated with experimental data. The liquid length is optically accessible by Mie-Scattering imaging techniques, the complete spray evolution by Schlieren technique. The experimental study was carried out in the high-pressure combustion vessel “OptiVeP” at FAU. The data shown in this paper derived from measurements with dodecane injected at 1200 bar into 613 K ambient. The ambient pressure varies from 1 – 10 MPa. A Continental research injector with a 115 µm hole and L/D of 6.5 was used. Nitrogen atmosphere suppressed ignition.Increasing the ambient pressure leads to a change in the mechanism in phase transition. It switches from a masstransfer dominated regime to a heat transfer dominated regime at high ambient pressures.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/ILASS2017.2017.4764
