Abstract:
In the article the fragments of the chronicle «Tarikh-i Mehmed Geray» of the Crimean historian Dervish Mehmed bin Mubarek Geray Chingizi, the content of which covers the description of the foreign policy of Peter the Great in the south at the end of the XVII century, are examined. The copy of the work has been preserved in the Austrian National Library. The material for analysis is the publication in Turkish of the master’s work of Ughur Demir «Tarikh-i Mehmed Giray» (assessment – transliteration of the text)» (consultant: Prof. Dr. Nejdet Oztürk, Istanbul, 163 pages). The translation from the Ottoman into Russian is carried out by R. Abduzhemilev. In the introductory part of the article, the source is described: the author’s personality, writing period, marking and volume of the manuscript, text script, and versatility of the contents. The works of the orientalists, where the chronicle is presented in the scientific-research context, are noted. The author focuses on the military campaigns during the reign of Peter I in the south at the end of the XVIIth century (the siege of the fortresses of Or, Dogan and Azak). The events described in the text: the struggle for the Or fortress, the refusal of Khan el-Haj Selim Geray to participate in the Ottoman campaign, the direction of the tsar’s troops from the north, the readiness of the troops of the Crimean Khanate to repel the siege, the negotiations of the parties, the siege of the Dogan fortress, the Azov fortress, an offensive from the sea, the defense of the strategic positions of the Crimean Khanate and Ottoman Empire.

Abstract:
AbstractC. F. Gellert's 1748 novel "Leben der schwedischen Gräfin von G***" portrays the moral actions of Jews as a result of good Christian conduct. In reaction, G. E. Lessing disputes this depiction in his one-act-play "Die Juden" from 1749. The recognition that a Jew could fulfill the ideals of the Enlightenment helped overcome the prejudices of Christian stage characters and of the audience, but it failed in the social circumstances of the time. Christian reception (J. D. Michaelis) understood a "noble Jew" to be a violation of the poetic principle of probability - and even for Lessing such a figure was the exception. Moses Mendelssohn, however, believed that Judaism was especially well-suited for fostering the development of certain virtues. In light of far-reaching interreligious concepts on the one hand and religiously motivated conflicts on the other, Lessing's early works reveal today the persistent value of self-critical examination concerning hidden prejudices towards religious and cultural minorities.

Abstract:
On 12 November 1745, the ad hoc militias of two peasant factions collided near Schmitzingen, a small village in the Black Forest country of Hauenstein, which constituted the southeastern quarter of the Habsburg province of Outer Austria. Several days before, the larger of the two forces had laid siege to Waldshut, the administrative seat of Hauenstein. The smaller band of peasants, recruited from cantons in the north of Hauenstein, had marched through the night to relieve the town. As it approached Waldshut, this relief force was ambushed, encircled, and routed. Two peasants died from wounds suffered in the melee, and many more were severely wounded.

Abstract:
The article describes the important moments of life and active political activity of one prominent female figure in the history of Transcarpathian region – Countess Ilona Zrínyi, who lived in Mukachevo in the 17th century and protected Mukachevo Castle from the Austrian invaders. The Countess' personality is also shown as a symbol of freedom and courage, which was especially emphasized during the siege of Mukachevo Castle by the Habsburgs in the second half of the 17th century (1685–1688). The article analyses eleven original letters written by Ilona Zrínyi before the siege of Mukachevo Castle. They testify to the connection between the Countess and the leadership of the Uzhanskyi and Berezhskyi counties (present-day territory of Transcarpathian region). They are stored in the Berehove Branch of the State Archives of Transcarpathian Oblast. These letters are important sources of evidence of Europe-wide history of our region. In the final part of the present article we have collected evidence based on press material and documents in the State Archives of Transcarpathian Oblast describing the so-called «Ilona-days», i.e. celebrations commemorating the personality of the great political and historical figure, Countess Ilona Zrínyi. All the official documents provide proof of the fact of how local people of Uzhanskyi and Berezhskyi counties (present-day Transcarpathia) loved and deeply respected the countess for her courage to fight for freedom against the Habsburgs, for her never-ending feeling of responsibility for her nation, and attentive care for her own motherland. During the siege of Mukachevo Castle with Ilona Zrínyi had her son, Ferenc Rákóczi II with her, who was still a child. The siege at that time taught the future leader of the liberation struggle of 1703–1711 to be courageous, and to love his motherland. Further research into sources related to Ilona Zríny’s activities may continue in the archives of Hungary and other countries as she unsuccessfully sought to form an international anti-Habsburg coalition. Abstract:
During the 18th century, the French embassy to the Holy See was one of the most important production centres of music, soirée, masquerade and festivity. All this was to celebrate Monarchy's and “Roi Très-Chrétien”'s glory and greatness. The aim of this study is to examine the role of music in French Institutions in Rome during this period. In particular, this study provides large documentation to investigate the events in which the music was performed, the purpose of the use of music during these events and to characterize places, conditions and times of the musical performanceThe main contribution of this study is the analysis of the new music commissioned in honour of the french royal family by the French ambassadors in the Holy See.More complex is the analysis of the events in which music was traditionally “linked” to the french festivities: this is the case of the feasts organized for the 25th August in honor of St. Louis or the 13th December in honour of St. Lucia. In these two occasions festivity was traditionally commissioned by the ambassadors who also sustain the financial costs of the entire celebration.During the period between 1724 and 1791, the ambassadors of France in Rome made use of the musical art to promote themselves and gain appreciation for their principal duty: to represent their king with luxury and extraordinary generosity in order to acquire the consideration appreciation of the entire roman Court

Abstract:
This Master's degree thesis, named Blood, honour and horror. Representations of siege warfare in journals of British defenders of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747, adheres at specific genre of historical anthropology of war and military. It poses questions regarding ana-lysis of contemporary culture of war and its individual variables, their interdependence and changing configuration during the siege of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747, during culmination point of War of Austrian Succession. Meaning of this text consists of an effort to discover alternative way of treating historical sources and to depart traditional conservative methods of analyzing the war conflict using national or confessional military stereotypes, essential features of key actors or theoretical normative of military science. The text comes to conclusion that most irregular and dramatic character of the siege of Bergen-op-zoom was primarily caused by profound misunderstanding between defenders and attackers regarding culture of war, especially acceptable definition of military honour and of legitimate combat techniques. Abstract:
On October 16, 1780, Bernardo de Gálvez’s forces sailed from Cuba to Pensacola. Two days later, a hurricane sank several ships, damaged most of the remaining ones, and scattered them off course. At his arrival to Havana, Gálvez faced the island’s high command who not only demanded his replacement but the cancellation of the attack against Pensacola. After several months of discussions and with the crucial assistance of Francisco de Saavedra, José de Gálvez special appointee to Cuba, Gálvez was able to reassert his authority and foster preparations for a second attempt to capture Pensacola. On February 28, 1781, “the expedition for the relief of Mobile and the conquest of Pensacola” set sail from Havana. Once in Pensacola, the navy officers refused to continue inside the bay since it was reputed too shallow for the ships’ draft. To prove them wrong, Gálvez embarked on the Galvezton, a small ship under his command as Louisiana’s governor and safely entered the bay. The fleet commanders had no choice but to follow. The siege works started shortly afterwards. However, reinforcements and supplies were needed for the operation to succeed. The first to arrive were from Mobile and New Orleans (March 22, 1781), but those from Havana, including French naval and army forces, did not reach Pensacola until April 19. On May 8, 1781, an anticipated long siege was abruptly ended when a shot from the Spanish batteries impacted the Queen’s Redoubt’s magazine, producing a big explosion. Two days later, Pensacola surrendered.

Since early spring 1781, a Spanish army had been laying siege to Pensacola in British West Florida. By May, after having repelled a fierce British counterattack against the Spanish advanced positions, General Bernardo de Gálvez confided to his good friend Francisco de Saavedra his worries about the slow progress of His Catholic Majesty’s arms against the British stronghold. Saavedra had been Gálvez’s classmate in the Royal Military Academy of Avila and was in Pensacola as the personal representative of the powerful minister of the Indies, José de Gálvez, Bernardo’s uncle....
