Abstract:
Corruption, as a nontraditional form of crime, occurred when power is abused to gain certain favours for individuals or parties at the expense of the rest. Siemens Aktiengesellscahft (Siemens AG) bribery case is the biggest company corruption revealed in history, in which the company had been convicted guilty for giving bribes to governments in many countries, from developing to developed countries. In Iraq, Siemens AG was proved guilty for giving bribes to Saddam Hussein regime during its involvement in United Nation Oil for Food Programme (UN-OFFP) in 2000-2002. This research is conducted to understand causing factors of such action by employing qualitative data for further analysis. Research finding shows that corruption in UN-OFFP involving three institutions: Siemens AS, Saddam Hussein regime, and UN, was occurred due to pragmatism in pursuing economic motive which encouraged by accommodative culture and enabled by weak law enforcement.

Symbole du capitalisme allemand, l'entreprise Siemens, est une multinationale employant plus de 450 000 personnes aujourd'hui et qui occupe un rang important dans l'industrie électrique mondiale. Très étudiée dans le monde germanique, l'histoire de cette entreprise reste peu connue du public français. Entre 1847, date de la fondation de l'entreprise Siemens &Halske, et 1981, année où se retire de la présidence du Conseil de Surveillance, Peter von Siemens, l'arrière petit-fils du fondateur, sept membres de la famille fondatrice ont contrôlé et dirigé l'entreprise. Durant cent trente-quatre années, le capitalisme familial a su porter le destin de cette entreprise. Cette étude part de l'hypothèse suivante : la longévité de Siemens, son durable succès ne s'expliqueraient-ils pas par la relation particulière que tissa la famille fondatrice avec l'entreprise ? L'objectif est de disséquer le mode de fonctionnement de cette entreprise familiale typique en vue de faire apparaître certaines caractéristiques du capitalisme familial allemand. Ce travail entend contribuer aux études déjà réalisées sur le " modèle rhénan du capitalisme ". Pour retracer les étapes de l'histoire de cette firme, une démarche chronologique a été adoptée ; celle-ci est articulée autour des quatre générations de Siemens qui se sont succédé à la tête de l'entreprise
The Siemens Company is a symbol of German capitalism. As a multinational Company, it employs today more than 450 000 people and holds an important rank in the World electric industry. The history of this company has been largely studied in the German world but it is not poorly known by the French public. Between 1847, when the Company S&H was founded and 1981, when Peter von Siemens, the founder's great grandson, withdraw from supervisory board, seven members of the founding family supervised ans ruled the Company. For 134 years, the family capitalism has been able to carry art the destiny of this company. This study starts from the follawry hypothesis : could the Siemens longevity, its long lasting success be explained by the special relationship that existed between the founding family and the company ? The goal is to study closely the way of functionary of this typical family firm in order to show some characteristics of the German family capitalism. This study means to contribute to other studies already carried out on the "German model of capitalism". To recount the main steps of the history of this company, a chronological procedure was adopted. It's structured around the four generations of this Siemens family who succeeded one anoter at the head of the company

Resumo: O principal objetivo da dissertação é evidenciar as iniciativas privada e pública que o reconhecimento dos temas ligados à sustentabilidade como oportunidades de negócios é fundamental e vantajoso para suas estratégias de gestão. O trabalho tem como hipótese a defesa de que os desafios ligados à sustentabilidade não devem ser mais considerados somente como uma externalidade do sistema produtivo, que vem onerar o negócio, mas como fonte de vantagens competitivas e um novo caminho para inovar, auxiliando no posicionamento estratégico das empresas e fazendo com que essas tenham sucesso em seus mercados. Na dissertação é realizado um estudo de caso junto ao Grupo Siemens AG, que pode ser considerado um exemplo de corporação que está buscando aliar o desenvolvimento de seus negócios às questões ligadas à sustentabilidade. A revisão teórica a respeito da relação entre estratégia empresarial e sustentabilidade indica que a inovação tem função essencial na promoção do desenvolvimento sustentável e que este deve ser entendido de acordo com suas três dimensões principais: a ambiental, a econômica e a social. Além disso, as práticas sustentáveis devem fazer parte, tanto das estratégias corporativas, como das estratégias competitivas das unidades de negócios dos grandes grupos empresariais, e reforçar o posicionamento estratégico já adotado por essas empresas. O estudo de caso verificou que as dimensões ambiental e econômica fazem parte das estratégias corporativas e competitivas do Grupo Siemens, mas este precisa desenvolver ainda a dimensão social para poder realmente se consolidar como uma empresa sustentável. Concluímos afirmando que em toda a sociedade é necessário desenvolver a ideia da necessidade de construção de um novo paradigma sustentável, onde o sistema econômico, a sociedade e o meio-ambiente possam se desenvolver harmoniosamente
Abstract: The main objective of this work is to evidence the private and public initiative that the recognition of sustainability-related subjects as business opportunities is crucial and advantageous to their management strategies. The work is the defense of hypothesis that the challenges related to sustainability should not be considered only as an externality of the production system, which charges the business, but as a source of competitive advantage and a new way to innovate, assisting in strategic positioning businesses and promoting these success in their markets. In the dissertation a case study is conducted at the Siemens AG Group, which can be considered an example of a corporation that is seeking to combine its business development to the sustainability issues. A literature review on the relationship between corporate strategy and sustainability indicates that innovation has key role in promoting sustainable development and that it should be understood according to its three main dimensions: environmental, economic and social. Furthermore, sustainable practices should be part of both corporate strategies and business units competitive strategies, also reinforcing the strategic positioning already adopted by these companies. The case study found that the environmental and economic dimensions are part of the Siemens Group corporate and competitive strategies, but the company still needs to develop the social dimension in order to really consolidate itself as a sustainable company. We conclude by saying that in all society is necessary to develop the idea of the necessity to build a new sustainable paradigm, where the economic system, society and the environment should develop harmoniously

Detta arbete har syftat till att ställa två av de större automationstillverkarna Siemens och Rockwell Automation mot varandra kring utvalda faktorer som: prestanda, kommunikation och tillgängliga mjukvaruverktyg. Studien har utformat tester på olika PLC-enheter från respektive tillverkare, redogjort för skillnader i de erbjudna kommunikationslösningarna samt analyserat mjukvaruverktygen utifrån utvalda egenskaper men också internationellt erkända standarder. Undersökningen har visat på bättre prestanda på processorer från Rockwell Automation än motsvarande från Siemens för ett givet tillämpningsområde. Vad befattar kommunikationslösningar med ethernet-teknologi har Siemens visat på bättre prestanda, stabilare kommunikation och ett mer komplett ekosystem som svarar på flera av de behov som kan uppstå i industriverksamhet. Mjukvaruverktygen från Siemens erbjuder mer objekt-orienterad funktionalitet och har visat sig betydligt mer kompatibel med den väletablerade standarden IEC 61131-3 som utformar programmeringsmetodiker för PLC-enheter och är tänkt att svara mot framtidens behov av interoperabilitet och effektivisering. Av resultaten som fåtts har en bedömning gjorts att Siemens erbjuder ett mer fördelaktigt utbud av produkter och tjänster som svarar väl mot framtidens krav.
This paper treats two competing suppliers of automation technology, Siemens and Rockwell Automation and directly compares them for a given set of factors in the following categories: performance, communication and software tools. The study consists of performance tests made on different PLC’s from these suppliers, considerations in the differences of communication technology and analysis of the programming tools according to chosen criteria’s but also by the degree of compliance with internationally established standards. The tests have shown the PLC from Rockwell Automation as having better performance for the chosen criteria (PLC’s for small to medium sized machines). Siemens offers more performance and more stable industrial ethernet communication over ProfiNET than does Rockwell Automation with EtherNet/IP. Accordingly, Siemens offers more flexibility in meeting future industrial needs. The software tools provided by Siemens offer a more object-oriented approach for programming PLC’s than equivalent tools from Rockwell Automation. TIA Portal offered by Siemens is more than twice as compliant with the internationally accepted standard IEC 61131-3 as Studio 5000 from Rockwell and in being more compliant benefits from increased interoperability and effective programming. The results show that Siemens’ products and services for automation benefits the customer in long term viability.

Abstract:
Die vorliegende Arbeit hat das Ziel, ökologische Benchmarks zur Bestimmung der Umweltleistung am Fallbeispiel der SIEMENS AG zu entwickeln. Anhand generierter Indikatoren ist die Umweltleistung im Rahmen eines Öko-Benchmarking nicht nur darstellbar, sondern auch verbesserbar. Das Instrument Benchmarking wird daher einleitend theoretisch beleuchtet und von anderen Instrumenten wie Ranking oder Rating abgegrenzt. Grundsätze für die erfolgreiche Durchführung eines Öko-Benchmarking werden erörtert. Der wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisstand zum Thema Umweltkennzahlen zur Messung der Umweltleistung und als die Grundlage eines Öko-Benchmarking schaffen einen zweites theoretisches Standbein. Die Anforderungen der Praxis werden berücksichtigt. Um die theoretische Vielfalt an Umweltkennzahlen auf ein praktikables Maß zu reduzieren, werden die Vorschläge von Non Governmental Organisation?s sowie Kennzahlen der Wettbewerber mit eingebunden. Das Ergebnis stellt sich als ein handliches aber inhaltsreiches Packet von zu empfehlenden Umweltkennzahlen dar. In einem folgenden Schritt wird das Vorgehen bei der Analyse der zur Verfügung gestellten Daten der SIEMENS AG dargestellt. Es wird versucht, Benchmarks zu generieren; die Analyse von ökologischen Ecoprints wird im Rahmen des Benchmarkingprozesses geschildert. Das Ziel der Datenauswertung ist es, den Standorten ein qualifiziertes und praktikables Feedback zu geben. Zur Verbesserung der ökologischen und ökonomischen Leistung wird die Optimierung der Kommunikation als wesentlicher Bestandteil untersucht. Doch das höchste ökologische Ziel hat keinen Bestand, wenn die Ökonomie vernachlässigt wird. Eine qualitative Kosten-Nutzen-Analyse hinterfragt die anfallenden Kosten der Kennzahlenbehandlung und gibt Aufschluss über die wesentlichen Nutzenfelder. Aber auch ökologische Belange haben auf die Unternehmen Einfluss. Auf die Zukunft gerichtete Perspektiven werden daher mit berücksichtigt. Als Methode zur Analyse der ökologischen Zukunft werden Szenarien vorgestellt.

A partir de l'analyse d'un cas en profondeur, celui du groupe Siemens, nous cherchons à identifier les processus sous-jacents à l'évolution de la culture d'entreprise. Nous étudions cette dynamique en considérant l'interaction entre des processus liés à l'action managériale et des processus provenant de pressions institutionnelles externes, dits processus exogènes. L'influence des facteurs exogènes est analysée au travers du concept de champ organisationnel, tel que défini par les Néo-institutionnalistes. Ce concept nous permet d'identifier des acteurs du champ (Concurrents, Institutions financières, Etat, Associations professionnelles) et les différents types de pressions exercées par eux sur l'organisation et sa culture. Nous analysons ensuite les actions managériales au travers des réponses stratégiques de l'organisation à l'aide de la grille de lecture de C. Oliver (1991) et à l'aide des travaux de Brunsson et Olsen (1993) sur la réforme dans les organisations. Nous montrons que l'interaction entre ces deux processus conduit à des évolutions de la culture et nous repérons des mécanismes permettant d'expliciter ces évolutions. Nous les présentons sous forme d'hypothèse.

L’objectif de cette thèse est de décrire, de comprendre et d’expliquer les conditions facilitant et/ou limitant le développement de la ressource connaissance entre les membres d’une équipe de projet. Nous adoptons une approche systémique et nous nous inspirons du Star Model de Galbraith (1973 ; 2002) pour bâtir notre propre modèle « design de l’organisation apprenante ». Une étude de cas longitudinale au sein d’une multinationale en pleine fusion avec un ancien concurrent a été réalisée. Notre analyse du management des connaissances dans trois situations organisationnelles contrastées (avant la fusion, pendant la fusion et post fusion) concernant les mêmes équipes projet exerçant les mêmes métiers conduit à des résultats à la fois convergents et divergents avec ceux décrits dans la littérature, donnant lieu à des résultats ambivalents. Cette ambivalence a été analysée à travers des modalités différentes de la notion de culture : nationale, organisationnelle et professionnelle
The objective of this thesis was to describe, understand, and explain the conditions facilitating and/or limiting the development of knowledge as a resource between members of a project team. We use a systemic approach to build a new model – called "Design of the learning organization" (Design de l’Organisation Apprenante) – based on Galbraith’s Star Model (Galbraith 1973; 2002). A longitudinal case study was performed within a multinational organization during a merger with one of its competitors. Our analysis of knowledge management in three contrasting organizational situations (before the merger, during the merger, and post merger) on the same project teams performing the same jobs leads to results both convergent and divergent with those described in the literature, giving rise to ambivalent results. This ambivalence has been analyzed through different modalities of the concept of culture: national, organizational, and professional

Lean premixed (LP) combustion is a proven concept for NOx-reduction in gas turbine systems. Lean premixed liquid fuel systems, also known as LPP (lean premixed prevaporized) systems, however, are more complex, as the fuel has to be atomized, evaporated and premixed prior to combustion and there is a higher risk of autoignition and coking. The Siemens LPP Hybrid burner, which was introduced into the Halmstadvaerket gas turbine of Sydkraft AB in Sweden in 1993, has since proven its reliability. As the primary design criteria have been maximum reliability and security against flashback, it still has a considerable potential for NOx-Emissions reduction. The objectives of this paper are to summarize the activities connected with the further development of the LPP Hybrid burner based on the Halmstadvaerket operation experience. These include the introduction of the LPP burner into a new machine generation with ring combustors as well as investigations into the two phase flow phenomena inside the burner. When the Model VX4.3A gas turbine family was introduced, the LPP Hybrid burner had to be scaled down to fit the different machine sizes. The paper reports on the development steps and first operation experiences with the LPP Hybrid burner system in HBR-combustor machines. In a concluding chapter, the paper outlines the next steps in the LPP development program. These include further experimental and numerical studies which are partly conducted in a co-operation between Sydkraft AB and Siemens AG.

Conventional air independent system is very difficult to meet the required efficiency target with high performance when it is used for submarine. The fuel cell system with liquid oxygen is applied to the air independent propulsion of submarine which can promise wider tactical range than conventional system. In this study, a dynamic simulation model is developed to evaluate the performance of the fuel cell air independent propulsion system (FCAIP). The simulation model is a cascading fuel cell stack model which can precisely predict the performance of very unique stack design architecture suggested by Siemens AG. The dynamic stack model is used for the evaluation of thermal management of fuel cell system under load follow-up.

Abstract The first Siemens AG SGT5-4000F was introduced in 1996. Since then, the combustion system was improved in several evolutionary steps in order to enhance the engine performance and emission requirements. Especially emissions requirements will become more challenging in the future as the typical limits will likely drop from 25ppm NOx to 15ppm or even single digit. In addition to clean power solutions, the market simultaneously demands increased operational flexibility in terms of load gradients, fuel flexibility (special fuels, hydrogen addition) and turndown capability. The SGT5-4000F fleet consists of more than 350 units in operation with ∼20Mio accumulated operating hours. Retrofit ability to the fleet is therefore an important aspect of the combustion system development. The paper reports upon the development of the latest improvements of the combustion system of SGT5-4000F engines, which have been achieved by application of the latest numerical design tools, advanced statistical machine learning techniques and utilization of additive manufacturing. Results from testing and validation of the modifications at the Siemens Clean Energy Center (CEC) for stand-alone combustion tests and Berlin Test Facility (BTF) for full scale engine tests will be presented. The system improvement includes aero-dynamic, fuel / air mixing and combustor cooling air management optimizations, which are the typical focus areas for lean premixed combustion systems in gas turbines.

Dabei werden unter anderem messbare Größen wie Drehmoment, Ankerstrom, -spannung, Drehzahl, Schwingungen, Fertigungstoleranzen etc. gemessen, aber auch nicht quantifizierbare Größen wie Sichtprüfungen von Schweißnähten und Lackierung in Betracht gezogen. Angestrebt wird eine Methode, welche es zukünftig ermöglicht, die Inbetriebnahme ortsunabhängig zu verfolgen und Inspektionen aus der Ferne durchzuführen. Die Herausforderung liegt dabei darin, eine zumindest gleichwertige, wenn nicht sogar verbesserte Erfahrung und Prüfergebnisvalidität für die Beteiligten gegenüber der vor Ort Abnahme zu erzeugen. Im Rahmen des Forschungsvorhabens wurde in interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit zwischen Ingenieur/-innen und Sozialwissenschaftler/-innen ein Demonstrator-Konzept für eine ortsunabhängige Maschinenabnahme entwickelt.

Abstract We describe DesiRe, a Design Review system based on virtual reality technology. DesiRe is a production virtual reality system that is used to support design review processes during the development of The European Pressurized Water Reactor (EPR). This paper starts with a brief description of the EPR project. We then focus on the design review processes that are an important part of the EPR development processes. We discuss why the use of virtual reality technology significantly improves the design review processes. The subsequent part of the paper introduces in detail the implementation issues and application issues of the virtual reality system DesiRe currently being used by the EPR engineers in their design review meetings. The end of the paper gives an outlook on future work and a brief conclusion. The work presented in this paper is part of an ongoing virtual reality research project at the Heinz Nixdorf Institut and Siemens AG KWU.

The first Siemens AG SGT5-4000F engine with hybrid burner ring combustor (HBR) was introduced in 1996. Since then, frequent evolutionary design improvements of the combustion system were introduced to fulfill the continuously changing market requirements. The improvements particularly focused on increased thermodynamic performance, reduced emissions, and increasing operational flexibility in terms of load gradients, fuel flexibility, and turndown capability. According to the Siemens product development process, every design evolution had to pass several validation steps to ensure high reliability and best performance. The single steps included cold flow and mixing tests at atmospheric pressure, high-pressure combustion tests in full-scale sector combustion test rigs, and full engine tests at the Berlin test facility (BTF). After successful validation, the design improvements were gradually released for commercial operation. In a first step, cooling air reduction features have been implemented in 2005, followed by the introduction of a premixed pilot as second step in 2006. Both together resulted in a significant reduction of the NOx emissions of the system. In a third step, an aerodynamic burner modification was introduced in 2007, which improved the thermo-acoustic stability of the system towards higher turbine inlet temperatures and adapted to fuel preheating to allow for increased cycle efficiency. All three features together have been released as package in 2010 and to date accumulated more than 50,000 operating hours (fleet leader 24,000). This paper reports upon the steps towards this latest design status of the SGT5-4000F and presents results from typical focus areas of lean premixed combustion systems in gas turbines including aero-dynamical optimization, fuel/air mixing improvements and cooling air management in the combustor.
