Abstract Correcting lisps in speech can prove to be of great difficulty to many, as they may be unaware of whether they are lisping. To help those affected, we have developed a simple algorithm for the real-time identification of the sigmatismus lateralis in ”S” sounds within speech via analysis in the frequency domain. The algorithm identifies peaks within the lisp’s frequency band after calibration. A frequency band of 3000-4000 Hz has been identified to be generally accurate for lisp and 2500-3000 Hz for the correct pronunciation for a single male test subject. The algorithm splits given sp

BACKGROUND: Speech sound appears first in the child’s speech development and is the primary means of expression. Articulation disorders can hinder the comprehensibility of children’s speech. The speech, in turn, can limit the child’s inclusion in the social and educational environment.
AIM: To establish frequency and distribution of lambdacism, rhotacism and sigmatism or their combination in preschool children and the frequency and distribution of these articulation disorders among boys and girls.

Speech disorders are significant barriers to the balanced development of a child. Many children in Poland are affected by lisps (sigmatism)—the incorrect articulation of sibilants. Since speech therapy diagnostics is complex and multifaceted, developing computer-assisted methods is crucial. The literature suggests that the topography of the tongue at rest is more important for the development of the jaws and the formation of occlusion than the function of the tongue during speech or swallowing. Ultrasound can be used to visualize the objective position of the tongue in children. One of the sources of a student’s self-esteem at a younger school age are social comparisons within their peer group. Articulation disorders may limit the effectiveness of communication and increase the likelihood of a sense of shame, stigmatisation, peer rejection or limitation of social contacts, which may lead to the formation of a negative self image and lower self-esteem. The research procedure was conducted in two groups of students in 10 primary schools in the Greater Poland region with the use of a reliable and valid research tool.
