Full textEarth observation satellites provide multispectral and panchromatic data having different spatial, spectral, temporal, and radiometric resolutions. The fusion of a panchromatic image having high spatial but low spectral resolutions with multispectral images having low spatial but high spectral resolutions is a key issue in many remote sensing applications that require both high spatial and high spectral resolutions. The fused image may provide feature enhancement, and classification accuracy increase. These image processing techniques are known as pan-sharpening or resolution fusion techniques. In this thesis three algorithms are proposed for pansharpening. In the component substitution category, our main contribution consists in using the IHS transform and boosting the Green band in the vegetated areas. In this case, two algorithms were proposed. In the first one the vegetation is detected using the NDVI index and the boosting is done before the fusion process. In contrast, for the second algorithm the boosting is done after the fusion process and the vegetation is delineated using a new index (HRNDVI) proposed for high resolution images. HRNDVI is used in vegetation extraction even in the complex urban case where the vegetation is scattered. Hence, a new method, using HRNDVI, was proposed and tested to extract vegetation. The third pansharpening algorithm is included in the multiresolution category based on the NSCT transform. The improvement is assured by using a low number of decomposition levels for multispectral images and a high number of decomposition levels for the panchromatic image. This strategy allows getting satisfying visual and quantitative results. Moreover, the contribution of the thesis considers also the quality assessment of the obtained pansharpened images. In fact, a new protocol for evaluating the quality is proposed. According to the application under use, it can be adjusted to favour the spectral or the spatial qualities

Full textOne of Saab Space’s products is the S19 guidance system for sounding rockets.Today this system is based on an inertial navigation system that blindly calculatesthe position of the rocket by integrating sensor readings with unknown bias. Thepurpose of this thesis is to integrate a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiverinto the guidance system to increase precision and robustness. There are mainlytwo problems involved in this integration. One is to integrate the GPS with sensorfusion into the existing guidance system. The seconds is to get the GPS satellitetracking to work under extremely high dynamics. The first of the two problems issolved by using an Extended Kalman filter (EKF) with two different linearizations. One of them is uses Euler angles and the other is done with quaternions. Theintegration technique implemented in this thesis is a loose integration between theGPS receiver and the inertial navigation system. The main task of the EKF isto estimate the bias of the inertial navigation system sensors and correct it toeliminate drift in the position. The solution is verified by computing the positionof a car using a GPS and an inertial measurement unit. Different solutions to theGPS tracking problem are proposed in a pre-study.

Full textThe purpose of this manuscript is to exhibit the research work solving the issue of data processing stem from defect localization techniques. This step being decisive in the failure analysis process, scientists have to harness data coming from light emission and laser techniques. Nevertheless, this analysis process is sequential and only depends on the expert’s decision. This factor leads to a not quantified probability of localization. Consequently to solve these issues, a multimodaland multicriteria analysis has been developped, taking advantage of the heterogeneous and complementary nature of light emission and laser probing techniques. This kind of process is based on advanced level tools such as signal/image processing and data fusion. The final aim being to provide a quantitive and qualitative decision help for the experts. The first part of this manuscript is dedicated to the description of the entire process for 1D and 2D data enhancement. Thereafter, the spatio-temporal analysis of laser probing waveforms will be tackled. Finally, the last part highlights the decision support brought by data fusion

Full textThis thesis addresses the process of EMG signal decomposition by developing an interactive classification system, which uses multiple classifier fusion techniques in order to achieve improved classification performance. The developed system combines heterogeneous sets of base classifier ensembles of different kinds and employs either a one level classifier fusion scheme or a hybrid classifier fusion approach.
The hybrid classifier fusion approach is applied as a two-stage combination process that uses a new aggregator module which consists of two combiners: the first at the abstract level of classifier fusion and the other at the measurement level of classifier fusion such that it uses both combiners in a complementary manner. Both combiners may be either data independent or the first combiner data independent and the second data dependent. For the purpose of experimentation, we used as first combiner the majority voting scheme, while we used as the second combiner one of the fixed combination rules behaving as a data independent combiner or the fuzzy integral with the lambda-fuzzy measure as an implicit data dependent combiner.
Once the set of motor unit potential trains are generated by the classifier fusion system, the firing pattern consistency statistics for each train are calculated to detect classification errors in an adaptive fashion. This firing pattern analysis allows the algorithm to modify the threshold of assertion required for assignment of a motor unit potential classification individually for each train based on an expectation of erroneous assignments.
The classifier ensembles consist of a set of different versions of the Certainty classifier, a set of classifiers based on the nearest neighbour decision rule: the fuzzy k-NN and the adaptive fuzzy k-NN classifiers, and a set of classifiers that use a correlation measure as an estimation of the degree of similarity between a pattern and a class template: the matched template filter classifiers and its adaptive counterpart. The base classifiers, besides being of different kinds, utilize different types of features and their performances were investigated using both real and simulated EMG signals of different complexities. The feature sets extracted include time-domain data, first- and second-order discrete derivative data, and wavelet-domain data.
Following the so-called overproduce and choose strategy to classifier ensemble combination, the developed system allows the construction of a large set of candidate base classifiers and then chooses, from the base classifiers pool, subsets of specified number of classifiers to form candidate classifier ensembles. The system then selects the classifier ensemble having the maximum degree of agreement by exploiting a diversity measure for designing classifier teams. The kappa statistic is used as the diversity measure to estimate the level of agreement between the base classifier outputs, i. e. , to measure the degree of decision similarity between the base classifiers. This mechanism of choosing the team's classifiers based on assessing the classifier agreement throughout all the trains and the unassigned category is applied during the one level classifier fusion scheme and the first combiner in the hybrid classifier fusion approach. For the second combiner in the hybrid classifier fusion approach, we choose team classifiers also based on kappa statistics but by assessing the classifiers agreement only across the unassigned category and choose those base classifiers having the minimum agreement.
Performance of the developed classifier fusion system, in both of its variants, i. e. , the one level scheme and the hybrid approach was evaluated using synthetic simulated signals of known properties and real signals and then compared it with the performance of the constituent base classifiers. Across the EMG signal data sets used, the hybrid approach had better average classification performance overall, specially in terms of reducing the number of classification errors.

Full textThis PhD is devoted to knowledge basis discovery using signal analysis and classification tools on time series. The application is the detection of new, known or abnormal physiological states in a alcoholic bioprocess. Analysis, classification and fusion of data from time series are done. First, wavelets transform and Hôlder exponent (linked to the singularities of the time series) are used to detect phenomenon and physiological states of the system. A new approach combining wavelets transform and differential evolutionary methods is proposed and gives better result than other classical evaluation methods of fuis Hôlder exponent. Then the LAMDA method of classification and its tools are presented. Aggregation operators of LAMDA are presented and a new operator is proposed. A comparison with other classifiers shows that LAMDA gives better results for this application. Relevance of data source is studied. A method based on evidence theory is proposed. Experimental results show that the relevance evaluation are quite interesting. This approach using signal processing, classification and evidence theory enables the analysis and the characterisation of the biological systems without using deterministic model. Thus the combination of these tools enables to discover new knowledge and to confirm the knowledge of the expert mainly by using time series describing biological systems

Full textThis thesis investigates two major problems that are challenging the wireless sensor networks (WSN): the measurements accuracy in the regions with a low density of sensors and the growing volume of data collected by the sensors. The first contribution of this thesis is to enhance the collected measurements accuracy, and hence to strengthen the monitored space coverage by the WSN, by means of the sensors mobility strategy. To this end, we address the estimation problem in a WSN by kernel-based machine learning methods, in order to model some physical phenomenon, such as a gas diffusion. We propose several optimization schemes to increase the relevance of the model. We take advantage of the sensors mobility to introduce several mobility scenarios. Those scenarios define the training set of the model and the sensor that is selected to perform mobility based on several mobility criteria. The second contribution of this thesis addresses the dimensionality reduction of the set of collected data by the WSN. This dimensionality reduction is based on the principal component analysis techniques. For this purpose, we propose several strategies adapted to the restrictions in WSN. We also study two well-known problems in wireless networks: the non-synchronization problem between nodes of the network, and the noise in measures and communication. We propose appropriate solutions with Gossip-like algorithms and smoothing mechanisms. All the techniques developed in this thesis are validated in a WSN dedicated to the monitoring of a physical species leakage such as the diffusion of a gas

Full textRemote sensing is a promising technology that finds as diverse applications as defence, urban planning, healthcare, and environmental management. Collecting countrywide statistics of crop yield is one of the main tasks of remote sensing. Acquiring and processing very high resolution (VHR) satellite images are means accomplishing this task. Processing these remotely sensed (RS) images requires not only computational power but also improved algorithms for image segmentation and classification. This thesis aims at presenting the work carried out for applying computationally efficient spectral and textural analysis on very high resolution RS images, and combining the results from the two analyses for improve classification of vegetation covers. The spectral analysis presented here adopts the unsupervised approach of classification, whereas the textural analysis adopts the supervised approach of classification. The fusion of the contour information from the unsupervised spectral analysis with the pixel class information from the supervised textural analysis yields successful classification results. The thesis takes as a test case, a site covered with orchards, truck crops, crop fields, vineyards, forest, and fallows from Nîmes’ region, France. The real contribution includes improved version of the unsupervised classification method based on k-means clustering, a method of introducing rotation invariance into the texture features based on discrete Fourier transform, and a method of fusing a supervised classification with an unsupervised classification. This thesis is all about developing these algorithms

Full textThis thesis proposes a tool to objectively assess customers’ opinions on vehicle lateral support, which means how comfort is perceived by car drivers and passengers during turns. Electromyography, skin resistance, passenger displacement and vehicle roll proved to be useful objective indicators during a study on the lateral support of minivans. In addition, an automatic tool that enables the extraction of relevant electromyographic data from noisy recordings was developed. This tool is based on segmentation via CEM (Classification Expectation Maximisation) and on classification via AR (AutoRegressive) modelling. Following step was to model vehicle lateral comfort using only the objective indicators identified above. This thesis proposes a regression tool that copes with multicollinearity and variable selection. The best model was chosen with respect to generalization effort. A sensitivity analysis performed on this model enabled to identify the three most important objective indicators for the prediction of vehicle lateral comfort

Full textDriver hypovigilance (whether caused by distraction or drowsiness) is one of the major threats to road safety. This thesis is part of the Toucango project, hold by the start-up Innov+, which aims to build a real-time hypovigilance detector based on the fusion of near infra-red video evidence and environmental information. The objective of this thesis is therefore to propose techniques for extracting relevant indices as well as multimodal fusion algorithms that can be embedded in the system for real-time operation. In order to work near ground truth conditions, a naturalistic driving database has been created with the collaboration of several transport companies. We first present a scientific state of the art and a study of the solutions available on the market for hypovigilance detection. Then, we propose several methods based on image (for the detection of relevant indices on the head, eyes, mouth and face) and data processing (for environmental indices based on geolocation). We carry out a study on the environmental factors related to hypovigilance and develop a contextual risk estimation system. Finally, we propose multimodal fusion techniques of these indices with the objective of detecting several hypovigilance behaviors: visual or cognitive distraction, engagement in a secondary task, sleep deprivation, microsleep and drowsiness

Visual-inertial tracking is a well known technique to track a combination of a camera and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). An issue with the straight-forward approach is the need of known 3D points. To by-pass this, 2D information can be used without recovering depth to estimate the position and orientation (pose) of the camera. This Master's thesis investigates the feasibility of using Optical Flow (OF) measurements and indicates the benifits using this approach.
The 2D information is added using OF measurements. OF describes the visual flow of interest points in the image plane. Without the necessity to estimate depth of these points, the computational complexity is reduced. With the increased 2D information, the 3D information required for the pose estimate decreases.
The usage of 2D points for the pose estimation has been verified with experimental data gathered by a real camera/IMU-system. Several data sequences containing different trajectories are used to estimate the pose. It is shown that OF measurements can be used to improve visual-inertial tracking with reduced need of 3D-point registrations.

Full textWith an increasing traffic intensity the demands on vehicular safety is higher than ever before. Active safety systems that have been developed recent years are a response to that. In this master thesis Sensor Fusion is used to combine information from a laser scanner and a microwave radar in order to get more information about the surroundings in front of a vehicle. The Extended Kalman Filter method has been used to fuse the information from the sensors. The process model consists partly of a Constant Turn model to describe the motion of the ego vehicle as well as a tracked object. These individual motions are then put together in a framework for spatial relationships to describe the relationship between them. Two measurement models have been used to describe the two sensors. They have been derived from a general sensor model. This filter approach has been used to estimate the position and orientation of an object relative the ego vehicle. Also velocity, yaw rate and the width of the object have been estimated. The filter has been implemented and simulated in Matlab. The data that has been recorded and used in this work is coming from a scenario where the ego vehicle is following an object in a quite straight line. Where the ego vehicle is a truck and the object is a bus. One important conclusion from this work is that the filter is sensitive to the number of laser beams that hits the object of interest. No qualitative validation has been made though.

Full textThis thesis investigates the use and performance of augmented perception (Cooperative Systems) for assessment of raod risk. We provide a discussion on intervehicular communications (IVC) limitations and performance model built to incorporate them, created from empirical data collected on the tracks. Our results are more pessimistic than existing literature, suggesting IVC limitations have been underestimated. Then, we develop a CS/Augmented perception simulation architecture. This architecture is used to obtain news results on the safety benefits of a cooperative safety application. At the first, we confirm earlier results in terms of crashes numbers decrease, but raise doubts on benefits in etrms of crashes' severity. Then, augmented and single-vehicule perceptions are compared in a reference driving scenarion for risk assessment. Our results show that augmented perception performance, although this might be valid only for our specific scenario. Eventually, we propose a new approach using augmented perception to identify road risk through a surrogate: near-miss events
