Abstract:
Ozu Yasujiro’s apprenticeship coincided with the steady rise of comedy in Japanese film. Before he developed his signature “urban petit bourgeois genre” films (shōshimin geki), he was influenced by the work of Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and Ernst Lubitsch. It is widely believed, however, that Ozu’s interest in comedy had dissipated during World War II. The idea of a polarization between early and late Ozu is bolstered by his wartime production of two so-called national policy films. The chapter aims to critique this by recalling the way in which the rising tide of nativist xenophobia impinged on Ozu’s caricature of anti-mobo/moga jingoists. He began to employ a range of humorous strategies to recalibrate shōshimin geki for the requirements of patriotic war efforts. His film projected and made visible not only the society at war but the very structure and process of embodied fascist vision.

Abstract:
This chapter charts the National Football League's (NFL) meteoric rise, thanks to NFL Films' unwavering designation of pro football as a unique and unifying reflection of America. Fueled by a combination of sport and media's increasingly profitable symbiosis and Commissioner Pete Rozelle's image-consciousness, the NFL enhanced its marketing efforts during the 1960s and began to diversify aggressively, creating branded products that reached out to audiences beyond the white, middle-class men who composed its typical fan base. The Rozelle-era NFL solidified its prominence in American culture through its merger with the American Football League and subsequent development of the Super Bowl. This chapter examines how the NFL made connections to as many potential fans as possible by establishing national television exposure, branding various items, organizing athletic events for kids, donating to charitable causes, and creating a tourist attraction. It looks at one production that codified NFL Films' signature aesthetic practices, They Call It Pro Football, and how it situates professional football as “the sport of our time.”

Raykoff, Ivan. Liberace’s Musical/Material Appeal. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199935321.013.175.

Full text
Abstract:
Inspired by the celebrated pianist-bandleaders Eddy Duchin and Carmen Cavallaro and the cinematic technique of José Iturbi in Hollywood films, pianist-entertainer Liberace (1919–1987) developed a distinctive and highly successful aesthetic and performance style that prioritized visual spectacle and emphasized the tactile elements of his playing. As evident in his first Soundies from 1943, then his nationally syndicated television show in the 1950s, Liberace highlighted the physicality and materiality of his music-making, an approach that later evolved into the signature props and flashy costumes of his live stage shows. The new medium of television enabled Liberace to integrate the traditions of Romantic pianism with new genres of popular music in a highly embodied manner that appealed to his fans as much as it bothered his critics invested in music’s physical and material transcendence.

Abstract:
Nevada’s Atomic Testing Site hosted nuclear atmospheric tests from the late 1940s to the early 1960s and doubled as both an outdoor laboratory and a film studio. Here, worlds meant to resemble small American towns in every detail were built and obliterated by nuclear explosions, giving rise to thousands of nuclear test films. Cinema transforms explosions into aesthetic experiences, turns the chaos of fallout into comprehensible narratives, and trains viewers to survive or endure the culture of nuclearism. Cinema naturalizes this regime that leaves a stratigraphic signature in the planet’s geological record, a signal so pronounced that geologists propose that the Anthropocene began in 1945 with the first atomic test. The chapter concludes with consideration of “Project Plowshare,” a proposed program to use atomic bombs for “geological engineering.” Operation Plowshare targets the earth’s “unfriendly terrain” to make it useful and welcoming to human development and global commerce.

Abstract:
This book has provided a new reading of the transformation of intimacy that can be found in real sex films using an interdisciplinary perspective drawing on new risk sociology; feminist critical geography; and literary and film studies concepts such as structure of feeling, narrative, genre, stardom, social audience, spectatorship, and mise en scène. In this pursuit the book has incorporated a bricoleur methodology of social audience and textual analysis and devised a “soft ethnography” to explore the different authorial signatures on a filmic text. By viewing real sex cinema through a variety of theoretical, empirical, sociohistorical, and reflexive lenses, it has suggested ways that readers can bring to the cinematic experience their own search for a mutual understanding of ideas and perspectives and yet also, like our social audience groups in their discussions with one another, a sense of critical extension as well.

Abstract:
Chapter 10 explores the ways in which intertexuality within and between the stages of writing, directing, and performing the film The Piano Teacher create a multi-authored text. In the absence of an ethnography of production impossible for films made in the past, the authors devised a “soft ethnography” approach focused on some key players in this “multiply authored” semiotic model (namely, the prize-winning author, director, and lead actor) to suggest the flow and feedback between these different “signatures” in the text. This soft ethnography is grounded in knowledge of the writer’s discursive history and politics, the director’s television/film sense of liberation via “obscene” cinema, and the actor’s “directing” (via her construction of character) through her performance as a developing part of her star persona. These personal/public negotiations are symptomatic of the reflexive “synthesize and extend” interdisciplinary approach of Real Sex Cinema.

Erk, Corina, and Brad Prager, eds. Ulrich Seidl. edition text + kritik im Richard Boorberg Verlag, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783967074260.
