La administración señorial es un tema inmenso, muy poco tratado en la historiografía italiana y que, por tanto, no ha sido objeto aún de una reconstrucción de conjunto. El texto proporciona, pues, una visión provisional al respecto y, al mismo tiempo, una posible metodología de análisis, dado que las visiones de síntesis y las propuestas metodológicas son las contribuciones más útiles para la perspectiva comparativa.

Abstract:
Resumo: As crônicas medievais foram produzidas no seio de suas cidades e, tanto em seu caráter laico quanto eclesiástico, compreendem dimensões educativas e políticas. A tradição cronística é um fenômeno importante na construção da ideologia e da organização política das comunas italianas durante o século XIII. Tendo isso em vista, este artigo é composto de três momentos que se entrecruzam: 1) o traçado de uma perspectiva do fazer cronístico citadino e mendicante, buscando entender o seu papel e importância nas cidades, para assim intentar inserir a Crônica de Salimbene de Parma – escrita entre os anos 1229-1268, e que possuiu um tecido textual no qual encontramos traços de diferentes gêneros narrativos – nesse contexto de produção; 2) um panorama do advento das signorie nas cidades, essas formas de governo surgidas em meados do século XIII e que trouxeram uma nova configuração para a dinâmica política e institucional do sistema comunal; 3) a análise de alguns relatos de Salimbene acerca de governos que observa. Tudo isso se dará no esforço de melhor entender o que o minorita apreciava ou condenava nos governos das signorie, buscando assim uma compreensão e percepção de outras nuances do período para além do “despotismo” e da “tirania”.

Abstract This article uses historical scholarship on Guido da Montefeltro and medieval Romagna (Franceschini and Vasina) alongside Ovid’s Metamorphosis and the Serventese del 1277 to contextualize the question asked by the soul of Guido (about peace or war in Romagna) and the catalog of tyrants provided by the pilgrim in Inferno 27. It examines how Dante held Guido accountable for the intensification of warfare in Romagna and made an argument for the responsibility of military strategists in the consolidation of urban signorie. Dante’s assessment coincides with current historiography and shows his concerns about the formation of regional states. A recontextualization of Guido’s question reveals the targeted nature of the pilgrim’s response, in which the pilgrim presents Guido with the triumph of his enemies.

Abstract:
The aim of the project is to investigate Oberto Pelavicino’s lordship over some italian city-states in the second half of the 13th Century. Between 1249 and 1266 he exerted his power over Cremona, Piacenza, Pavia, Vercelli, Milan, Brescia, Alessandria and Tortona (but his dominion can be recognized also in the cities of Asti, Parma, Pontremoli and Reggio). A debate about the dominion of the city was recently brought to the center of the affairs of the communalistic historiography, despite facing a critical afterthought of the relationships between city-state and lordship. On the one hand my purpose is the investigation of the reasons and the ways through which Oberto Pelavicino ruled over such a wide territorial structure. On the other hand I analyze the reasons that led different cities to bow to him. Unfortunately, the municipal archives regarding this period and the cities ruled by Oberto don’t exist anymore. Therefore the research is based on the private acts and the documents of ecclesiastical institutions: among the Milan State Archive for what concerns Milan, Pavia, Cremona and Brescia; and on the maps and the papers of Archive of St. Antonio’s basilica and of Piacenza State Archive. Finally, we take advantage of other documents from the State Archives of Vercelli, Pavia, Brescia, Cremona and Alessandria. As a consequence of the private nature of the majority of the available documentation, the identification of collaborators is the base for my work. The reconstruction of Pelavicino’s political entourage allows us to notice which families and social groups supported him. Therefore, this makes us understand if they were the same in every cities and how the pars marchionis concretely acted. The analysis of the functionary “circuits” represents a useful key of investigation in order to inquire how Pelavicino ruled the city system he was controlling and this is why we are allowed to look at his lordship always being focused on the reality of each cities, and, at the same time, being able to keep in mind the dimension of the local dominion.

Si è esaminato il fenomeno dell’incastellamento in Oltrepò Pavese (X sec. - inizi epoca moderna) con una visione globale e diacronica. La ricerca ha previsto l’integrazione di differenti metodologie di indagine: l’analisi della cartografia storica, lo scavo archeologico del sito fortificato di Monte Pico (PV), lo studio della cultura materiale di alcuni contesti, la ricognizione di superficie e la lettura degli elevati. Tali dati sono stati contestualizzati storicamente ricostruendo le vicende dei poteri locali che si sono susseguiti nella gestione del territorio dell’Oltrepò; il dato materiale è stato fatto dialogare con i dati documentali estrapolati dalla documentazione storica e dalle fonti cartografiche. E’ stato svolto un lavoro analitico su contesti castrensi e su borghi stradali mercantilei che ha portato a una sintesi sulle maestranze e le tecniche edilizie che hanno caratterizzato la storia materiale dei siti indagati. Il lavoro ha quindi mostrato come il comparto territoriale abbia costituito un importante collegamento tra i ricchi porti liguri affacciati sul Mediterraneo e la pianura padana, offrendo nuovi e sistematizzati dati su un’areale geografico fino ad ora poco indagato archeologicamente e storicamente.
The phenomenon of encastellation in Oltrepò Pavese (X century - Early Modern Age) has been examined with a global and diachronic vision. The research envisaged the integration of different survey methodologies: the analysis of historical cartography, the archaeological excavation of the fortified site of Monte Pico (PV), the study of the material culture of some contexts, surveys and reading of the masonry. These data have been historically contextualized by reconstructing the vicissitudes of local powers that have followed in the management of the territory of Oltrepò; the material data was made dialog with the documentary data extrapolated from the historical documentation and cartographic sources. An analytic work was carried out on fortified contexts and on mercantile roads villages which led to a synthesis of the craftsmen and building techniques that characterized the material history of the sites investigated. Then the work showed how the territorial compartment was an important link between the rich Ligurian ports overlooking the Mediterranean and the Padana plain, offering new and systematised data on an archaeological and historical geographic area till now not investigated.

La presente ricerca di dottorato consiste in un’analisi di carattere politico ed istituzionale dei poteri signorili e territoriali, collegati a distretti castrensi, documentati nella Romagna nord-occidentale durante il pieno medioevo. L’indagine mira a ricostruire, principalmente attraverso fonti documentarie, alcune delle quali inedite, la geografia dei poteri in un’area sub-regionale, con particolare attenzione al fenomeno della signoria rurale, dei poteri comitali e dell’incastellamento. Partendo dallo studio di una realtà locale, la ricerca arriva a sviluppare argomentazioni di carattere generale, ricollegandosi al dibattito storiografico sui poteri signorili e l’incastellamento. La ricerca risulta incentrata sui soggetti politici, laici ed ecclesiastici, detentori dei castelli e dei poteri pubblici nella Bassa Romagna, in primo luogo gli arcivescovi di Ravenna, i vescovi e i conti di Imola, le famiglie comitali di Cunio, Bagnacavallo e Donigallia nei secoli XI-XIII. L'attenzione si concentra, in particolare, sulla fase del cosiddetto “secondo incastellamento” e sui decenni a cavaliere tra XII e XIII secolo, con il tentativo di espansione dei comuni nel contado e la formalizzazione dei poteri dei signori rurali da parte dei sovrani svevi. Proprio alla complessa interazione con il mondo cittadino e allo stretto rapporto dei Cunio e dei Malvicini con la corte di Federico II viene dato ampio spazio nei capitoli conclusivi del presente lavoro.
The doctoral research entitled Pubblici poteri e signorie di castello nella Romagna nordoccidentale fra XI e XIII secolo is a critical study about castle-lordships and their rise and growth from institutional, political and social point of view. This work examines local and feudal powers, castle-lordships and fortified settlements in Romagna between XI and XIII centuries, connecting with the historiographical debate about castle-holding aristocracy. It has specifically been taken into consideration north-western of Romagna, which was later conquered by Este family. This is a particular kind of area, without important towns but fully of castles and dominated by Ravenna, Faenza, Imola and, most of all, by Ravennate archbishop. This area has also long time influenced by byzantine rule. Thanks to his work, we can clearly understand that north-western Romagna is a lot more like to the remaining part of northern Italy of Longobard-French tradition.

La tesi ricostruisce le signorie urbane concesse nel 1470 a Isabella di Castiglia in Sicilia e Catalogna, in quanto regina consorte d'Aragona, ovvero Siracusa, Lentini, Francavilla, Mineo, Vizzini, San Filippo, Tàrrega, Vilagrassa e Sabadell. Questo patrimonio era una base di potere molto importante per corroborare il suo status, retribuire i suoi ufficiali e aumentare il prestigio del suo entourage. La ricerca analizza l'amministrazione politica ed economica della signoria reginale, soprattutto le prerogative che la sovrana esercitava su questa giurisdizione e i diritti mantenuti dal re e dai municipi. La tesi delinea le differenti forme in cui si è impiantato il gruppo di ufficiali e le diverse strategie di promozione sociale perseguite dalle classi dirigenti locali. In ultima istanza, il volume presenta la trascrizione dei privilegi ufficiali di donazione e di un registro conservato nell'Archivio della Corona d'Aragona, dato che al giorno d'oggi è l'unico proveniente dalla cancelleria propria della regina.
The thesis reconstructs the urban manor of Sicily and Catalonia granted in 1470 to Isabel de Castilla as queen consort of Aragon, that is Siracusa, Lentini, Francavilla, Mineo, Vizzini, San Filippo, Tàrrega, Vilagrassa and Sabadell. This patrimony was a very important base of power to corroborate her status, reward her officers and increase the prestige of her entourage. The research analyzes the political and economic administration of the reginal manor, especially the rights the queen had in her jurisdiction and those maintained by the king and the municipalities. The thesis outlines the ways in which the class of officers has been implemented and the different social promotion strategies pursued by the local ruling classes. Finally, the book presents the transcription of the official charters of donation and of a record kept in the Archives of the Crown of Aragon, since today it is the only one made in the queen's chancery.

La tematica relativa al regime signorile della terra, diverso e preesistente a quello feudale, è stata scarsamente sviluppata in Italia meridionale rispetto all’attenzione che ha suscitato nel Regno Italico. Qui gran parte degli studi ha evidenziato la struttura politico-istituzionale e le differenze tipologiche del modello signorile. Nel Mezzogiorno peninsulare la signoria ha rappresentato un fenomeno di lunga durata che ha condizionato profondamente gli aspetti socio-economici e politici del territorio fin oltre il XVIII secolo. La signoria fu la struttura portante dell’assetto politico e sociale locale. La sua genesi risiede nello sfruttamento della ricchezza fondiaria e nella patrimonializzazione di un potere di natura pubblica. Si sostanzia in un rapporto di sudditanza e di dipendenza tra chi esercitava la giurisdizione signorile e i residenti di un territorio. I preziosi contributi sulla signoria meridionale sono stati finora offerti da storici d’Oltralpe. Solo alcuni di loro, in studi a carattere regionale, si sono avvalorati di un apporto documentario consistente per indagare il fenomeno signorile e le modalità di esercizio del proprio potere. Altri si sono rivolti ad analizzare una situazione più circoscritta, spesso incentrata nell’analisi delle modalità di gestione del patrimonio da parte di enti ecclesiastici o monastici, titolari di signorie fondiarie. Si pensi ai lavori di J.-M. Martin sulla Puglia e di L. Feller sull’Abruzzo, per quanto riguarda i fenomeni regionali; C. Wickham e P. Toubert, in particolare sul ruolo dell’incastellamento della Sabina e la tipologia signorile rappresentata da San Vincenzo al Volturno. Il lavoro di ricerca mira a qualificare e quantificare le modalità di esercizio dei poteri pubblici signorili connessi alla gestione dei patrimoni laici ed ecclesiastici, attraverso lo studio e il censimento sistematico della documentazione edita del Mezzogiorno peninsulare, in un arco cronologico compreso tra IX e XIII secolo. Si è potuto in questo modo proporre una catalogazione delle molteplici forme del potere signorile, l’esistenza e la composizione delle relazioni di subordinazione tra titolare e concessionari coinvolti nella conduzione del patrimonio. Inoltre è stato possibile, in rari casi, valutare la struttura della rendita signorile, gli investimenti, le forme di gestione, il rapporto tra assetti insediativi e dominato. Lo studio della fisionomia signorile attraverso i documenti ha consentito un’analisi più articolata del fenomeno, mostrano nella realtà fattuale e nel contesto storico-geografico di riferimento l’esercizio di poteri di natura pubblica da parte dei titolari della ricchezza. La raccolta di una quantità così elevata di fonti ha aperto gli orizzonti sulle molteplici potenzialità di ricerca e di approfondimento. La signoria rurale esercita un dominio pervasivo e capillare all’interno del territorio. Una forma di controllo che interessa tutti gli aspetti della vita reale di un individuo, dalle semplici forme di locazione ai più semplici processi produttivi. Una signoria in grado di esprimersi nelle titolarità di poteri pubblici, nella gestione di terre e uomini, nell’esercizio di diritti sulle persone oltre che sui beni.
The issue concerning the seigneurial regime of the land, different and preexisting to the feudalism, was poorly developed in southern Italy compared to the attention that has filled the North. Here most of the studies reported political-institutional system and typological differences of the seigneurial model. In the South of Italy lordship it has been a long-term phenomenon that has deeply affected the socio-economic and political aspects of the area until after the eighteenth century. The lordship was the political set-supporting structure and local social. Its genesis lies in the exploitation of landed wealth and power in the capital of a public nature. It is embodied in a relationship of subordination and dependency between those who exercised the seigneurial jurisdiction and the other man of an area. The valuable contributions on the southern dominion have been offered so far by historians across the Alps. Only a few of them, in regional studies, have corroborated a significant contribution documentary to investigate the phenomenon and seigneurial manner of exercise of its power. Others have turned to analyze a more circumscribed situation, often centered in the analysis of the mode of management of the assets by ecclesiastical or monastic authorities, lordships land owners. Consider the works of Martin J.-M. on Puglia and L. Feller on Abruzzo, regarding regional phenomena; C. Wickham and P. Toubert, in particular on the role of battlements of Sabina and the manor type represented by San Vincenzo al Volturno. The research aims to qualify and quantify the manner of exercising the seigneurial public authorities in connection with asset management laity and clergy, through the study and the systematic census of published documentation of the peninsular South, in a chronological period between the ninth and thirteenth centuries . It was possible in this way propose a classification of the multiple forms of the noble power, the existence and composition of subordination relations between the owner and dealers involved in the management of the assets. It was also possible, in rare cases, evaluate the structure of the seigneurial annuity, investment, forms of management, the relationship between settlement structure and dominated. The study of seigneurial powers appearance through documents has allowed a more comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon, show the factual reality and in the historical and geographical context of reference, the exercise of powers by the public nature of wealth holders. The collection of such a large amount of sources has opened the field on multiple research potential and depth. The rural lordship exerts a pervasive and widespread domain within the territory. A form of control that affects all aspects of the real life of an individual, with simple shapes lease to simpler production processes. A lordship able to express themselves in the ownership of public authorities in the management of lands and men, in the exercise of rights on individuals as well as on the goods.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the once great medieval Tuscan capital of Lucca's struggle for survival at the beginning of the fifteenth century. This was the age of the rise of regional states in Italy, and the expansionistic aims of Milan, Florence and others were a constant challenge to city-states such as Lucca which desired a political and cultural status quo. Yet, it was a challenge that was successfully met; unlike Pisa, Siena, Perugia, and various other major Tuscan cities, Lucca did not succumb to Milanese or Florentine aggression in the early Quattrocento. Why it did not is a major topic of discussion here. One of the means in which the Lucchese faced the new political and military realities of the time was the establishment of a monarchial system of government in the signoria of Paolo Guinigi (r. 1400-1430). The Guinigi Signoria was not characterized by the use of intimidation and violence, but rather by clientage, kinship and neighborhood bonds, marriage alliances, and the general consent of the people. Paolo garnered the consent of the people at first because his wealth allowed him to protect Lucca and its contado to a greater extent than would have been possible otherwise, and because of his family's long ties with the powerful Visconti of Milan; he held it later because he provided the city-state with capable leadership. This study extends the evidence of recent scholars that every Italian Renaissance city was unique based on its particular geography, alliances, civic wealth, and a number of other factors. Lucca in the period of Paolo Guinigi, a monarchy in the setting of one of the traditionally most republican cities of Italy, provides a most interesting example. “Civic humanism,” for example, has a decidedly different slant in Lucca than elsewhere, and is best exemplified in the figure of Giovanni Sercambi. This study also provides new perspectives from which to view Florence and Milan during the period of “crisis” at the beginning of the fifteenth century, and thus contributes to the mass of scholarship concerning the Baron thesis.

Si tratta di un testo particolarmente stimolante dal punto di vista traduttivo sia per gli aspetti linguistici che presenta, sia per la resa della traduzione in italiano, generalmente molto complessa, ricercata ed enfatizzata.

The paper presents some examples of rural lordship in Southern Italy, mainly in Campania, using primary sources of different kind: public and private records, books of the Lord’s chancery, dossiers for the feudal relief, administrative correspondences. It seems that some characteristics of rural lordship of the high middle ages were present also in late middle and early modern Southern Italy: the seigneurial estates were heterogeneous, had no territorial continuity and passed frequently from a Lord to another; there were men who depended on a Lord although they were free and who had to give corvées (but receiving a payment) and symbolic honours to the Lord and to the King; there was still a connection between manorial dependence, fiscal exemption, and immigration.

Abstract:
This essay analyzes the ways in which rural lordship was legitimized, maintained and sometimes contested in the late Middle Ages. The focus is not on the local societies and the political competition within the regional state, but rather on the position of seigneurial power in the interstices of international relations. Specifically, the dynamics of the frontier allowed the lords to enforce their power, but produced situations that put their authority in risk, providing opportunities for their subjects to contrast it. Political brokerage is the key to exploring the competition and the relationship between a variety of local actors and the state authorities. The source I selected is the Carteggio sforzesco, consisting of the written correspondence between these protagonists. From this viewpoint and thanks to records rich in narrative and descriptive contents, I will try to reconstruct economic tensions, military instability, the need for diplomatic agreements and for individual protection, that define the relationship between the Duchy of Milan, Valais, Switzerland and Grisons. Finally I will go into depth in the case-study of Val Formazza, where the domination of the lords family was in decline during the 15th Century, while local protagonists of this diversified local world – highlanders of lower social conditions settled in a peripheral valley forming an ethno-cultural minority of German speakers – were capable.

Abstract:
Finite elements in space with time-stepping numerical schemes, even though versatile, face theoretical and numerical difficulties when dealing with unilateral contact conditions. In most cases, an impact law has to be introduced to ensure the uniqueness of the solution: total energy is either not preserved or spurious high-frequency oscillations arise. In this work, the Time Domain Boundary Element Method (TD-BEM) is shown to overcome these issues on a one-dimensional system undergoing a unilateral Signorini contact condition. Unilateral contact is implemented by switching between free boundary conditions (open gap) and fixed boundary conditions (closed gap). The solution method does not numerically dissipate energy unlike the Finite Element Method and properly captures wave fronts, allowing for the search of periodic solutions. Indeed, TD-BEM relies on fundamental solutions which are travelling Heaviside functions in the considered one-dimensional setting. The proposed formulation is capable of capturing main, subharmonic as well as internal resonance backbone curves useful to the vibration analyst. For the system of interest, the nonlinear modeshapes are piecewise-linear unseparated functions of space and time, as opposed to the linear modeshapes that are separated half sine waves in space and full sine waves in time.

Abstract:
In this paper a non-linear elastic ring is studied by using a method for contact/impact problems. The method is developed for frictional contact, impact and rolling between a two-dimensional hyperelastic body and rigid foundations. The elastic properties of the body are defined by coupling the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress to the Green-Lagrange strain via the Kirchhoff-St. Venant law. The rigid supports are described by smooth functions. By introducing the mean value impulses, these functions are utilized to formulate new contact/impact laws. The support functions appear explicitly in the variational formulation of Signorini, and implicitly in the maximal dissipation principle of Coulomb. A feature of this approach is that no search algorithm is needed. Another feature is that the normal and tangential directions of the supports are well defined. The above constitutive assumptions together with the law of motion, which is written on velocity form, define the governing equations of the system. These are solved by a nonsmooth Newton method. The method is utilized to study the contact pressure between a snap ring and a rigid groove which has the shape of a perfect circle. It is obvious that if the snap ring also has the shape of a perfect circle, then the distribution of the contact pressure will be uneven. An even distribution of the contact pressure is preferable in order to improve function and increase lifetime. The question that is considered in this paper is how the shape of the ring should be designed in order to produce this type of contact pressure.
