Abstract:
Vikings with artificially modified teeth have previously been documented in the south-eastern parts of Scandinavia and in England. In a project dealing with life in the Mälaren Valley in Sweden during the period AD 750–1100, new cases of people with modified maxillary teeth were observed. The hypothesis that the practice was entirely associated with adult men dating to the Viking Age was tested. The new cases demonstrate that the habit extended to eastern-central Sweden, including the proto-town of Birka, perhaps as early as in the middle of the eighth century. Additionally, cases from Sigtuna show that the practice may have ended as late as the beginning of the twelfth century. A microanalysis, using a scanning electron microscope, showed the heterogeneous character of the modifications. The affected individuals were all adult men, similar to previously published cases. Some of the men are associated with weapons and violent acts and the cases from Sigtuna were all from cemeteries with a possible association with lower social strata. However, discrepancies in archaeological contexts and in the characteristics of the modifications suggest temporal and spatial variation in the social meaning of the modifications.

Abstract:
Abstract In this study the up to now almost completely unknown High German charm against theft in Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm. 27105, fol. 107b is edited for the first time and discussed in the context of the theft charms containing a curse and threat of retribution for the criminals. In this respect, the fifteenth-century High German text, in which the threat for the thief is committed to the words of Psalm 35 (Vulgate 34) and thus given a new, fully-orthodox form, can be considered a late representative of a long-lasting tradition attested from the eleventh century onward, e.g. in Cambridge, Corpus Christi College 41, p. 206 and in the runic inscription on the copper scale box found in Sigtuna in 1911.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to discuss the challenges of organising women workers in Asia, and to discuss how trade unions can facilitate their more effective participation in these movements. The paper is primarily informed by research undertaken with Southern Initiative on Globalization and Trade Union Rights (SIGTUR). Formed in Perth, Western Australia in 1991 and made up of delegates from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, the Philippines, Hong Kong, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil, the aim of SIGTUR is to promote collaborative activity by independent trade unions in the ‘South’ or rather countries within the Asia-Pacific. The paper highlights the effects of neo-liberalism on workers and develop appropriate international responses.

Godsk, Mikkel. Tidsskriftet Læring og Medier (LOM) 3, no. 4 (October 1, 2010). http://dx.doi.org/10.7146/lom.v3i4.3925.
