Abstract:
This paper addresses the transition of Hutongs from alleys connecting the main streets to fully commercialized districts. Hutongs are narrow streets formed by rows of Siheyuans (quadrangle dwellings), a traditional type of Chinese architecture consists of four houses surrounding a courtyard. The architectural layout of Siheyuan is four houses surrounding a courtyard. There are several types of Siheyuans, including the Beijing Siheyuan. Along with the development of Beijing since 1949, numerous Siheyuans were demolished. However, since the 1980s, many Hutongs were brought under national and local protection. Some of the best preserved Hutongs, especially those in the center areas of Beijing, are now more commercialized than they were prior to the ‘80s. This paper discusses the causes as well as consequences of such commercialization. Literature concerning the Hutongs frequently discusses the Hutongs' history and the shift in their architectural design, as well as other aspects that have changed over time. By contrast, this paper discusses a special phenomenon of Hutongs in Beijing — commercialization — and focuses on the causes and results of it.

Abstract:
The United Nations and local governments have supported a four-point sustainable development framework, including environmental responsibility, economic viability, social equity, and cultural vitality. This study is based on the theoretical framework of sustainability to study the traditional Chinese siheyuan residence. Space syntax attempts to explain how spatial structures express social or cultural significance, such as the hierarchical relationship and privacy in it. The main purposes of this study are: (1) To analyze the spatial topological layout of traditional siheyuans by using the space syntax theory, and thus deduce the cultural connotation embedded in traditional siheyuans; (2) to compare and analyze the spatial morphology and behavior patterns of traditional and modern houses; (3) to explore how to integrate courtyard features into contemporary design and promote cultural sustainability. This study expounds the concept and application of syntactic analysis, and the relationship between the syntactic attributes of specific buildings in a particular area, and the culture and life of the local people within that area. As time goes by, the spatial form of houses has changed. However, in terms of spatial allocation index, the significant difference between traditional residences and modern residences lies in the integration and equivalence of all spaces in residences. We can learn from the cultural values of traditional siheyuans, meaning “people-oriented”, to rationally design modern residences with cultural connotations.

Abstract:
The article examines the evolution and diversity of traditional Chinese dwellings, Which are due to the multinational composition of the population and the natural conditions of different parts of the country.
The syncretism characteristic of China also had a great influence on the formation of the dwelling. Confucianism formed the forms of family structure and norms of behavior, and Taoist principles and Buddhist rules – interaction with the world.
The most common type of dwelling is the siheyuan, which is based on Chinese tradition and philosophy. This term is the key to creating an ensemble, regardless of the hierarchy and location of the settlement. The country has a very large variety of landscape and climatic territories, a rich historical heritage, a huge number of nationalities, which in interrelation have formed an equally rich historical typology of residential buildings. However, China has its own special differences that played a crucial role shaping the typology of housing. These are, first of all, inviolable forms of family structure and norms of behavior based on centuries-old dogmas of Confucianism, developed by the Taoist principles of interaction with the Buddhist worldview.
In general, in different regions of China there were various modifications of the traditional type of house Siheyuan, which is certainly due to the peculiarities of climatic, economic and social conditions. The peculiarities of Chinese architecture have made the concept of siheyuan key in creating any ensemble in settlement. All buildings are subject to the rules of siheyuan (si – the four corners of the world, he – the environment, yuan – the garden, in this case, the garden with the yard). Its essence is that any complex is created around the yard, if there are several, then the main yard.
All buildings are strictly symmetrical along the longitudinal axis.

Abstract:
This paper is a case study of Wu’s house, which is located at the Majiamiao hutong, only several blocks away from the imperial palace—the Forbidden City in Beijing. It is a typical quadrangle called Siheyuan, or "four-side enclosed courtyard". Historians declared that, judging by the architectural style and interior decoration, the house might have been constructed in the late Ming dynasty [1], which means the history of the house could go back for more than 400 years. The complete story of the house and its owners can be divided into three parts: first, a house for a large feudal family before 1949; secondly, a house for a famous dramatist until 1966; and finally, a house for the city poor from the Great Cultural Revolution on. During 400 years of social evolution and revolution, especially in the past 50 years, the house and the families who lived in it underwent great changes. The precise homology and strict hierarchy in Siheyuan, implied by the order of orientation and scale of the buildings within the house, was weakened gradually by the “revolutionists” who tried to establish an absolute equality among the people in every detail of their lives, including their house. However, never will a house like Siheyuan be equal to every member in it because it was born of politics.

Abstract:
Series of numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of backyard depth to the wind environment of the atrium. In the first stage of this study it was found that the original designed narrow backyard is not conducive to induce wind flow into atrium. A CFD software was adopted to simulate the wind distribution with variant backyard depth. And the result shown, if the depth of backyard might allow the wake vortex to shed from the main house roof and formatted well then the velocity in the atrium would be increase. Not only the mean velocities were checked, also the uniformity of velocity in the atrium had be inspected. We found that the deeper backyard would increase the mean velocity contemporary . In the real situation of building sites, there might not be enough space for the backyard. In this study one more aisle was put beside the main house to check its effects . And the calculation results shown, that the two ailses will improve the flow rate from atrium to backyard even in the layout of original design and the wind environments also be improved. With this results it is evident that will also good for the natural ventilation and pollutant matter dispersed.

Abstract:
Siheyuan is a traditional Chinese dwelling type. The term is made up with three characters: Si means four, He means enclosure and Yuan means yard. The literal translation of Siheyuan means quadrangle. I have a great childhood memory of living in such kind of environment. It has remained my study interest through the years as a Landscape Architecture student, and eventually became my practicum topic. The purpose of this practicum is to explore the traditional Chinese courtyard dwelling types with a particular emphasis on the Siheyuan. By conducting case studies on sheltered dwellings in different cultures, it is hoped that valuable lessons about courtyards can be learned so as to inform the proposed design. Strategies derived from analysis and researches are applied to the design of three existing courtyards on the University of Manitoba campus. The design intends to improve the quality of these spaces with the awareness of Winnipeg's local climate and their functionality in a campus environment.<br>May 2017

Abstract:
This is a formal study of housing types in traditional and contemporary Beijing. The research is done largely with the aid of the computational tools. The final product is a computer multimedia file stored in CD-ROM. The background for this research is the rapid development in Beijing which is being extended into the inner city area where large amount of traditional houses still exist. The central issue of this study is the attitudes towards 'traditional' and 'new' and the comparison of them. It takes 1949 as the year for the division of 'traditional' and 'new' as that is the years of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Therefore, it takes Siheyuan which was the dominant housing type before 1949 as the traditional type and some prototypes found in post-1949 period China under the category of 'new' housing types. The research mainly contains three parts. It starts with study of the traditional courtyard house - Siheyuan, examines the historical background which have enabled this type of house to have existed for centuries. It then take examples in post-1949 China to analyze the new interpretations. The political, economic and other social factors are examined for a better understanding of these built forms. Based on the above research and analysis, it finally comes up with conclusions of the forms and made recommendations for the future planning/design activities. Exploration of the potential of the computational tools comprises a large part of the study. Exploration of multimedia tools is carried out through the research. The final product is academic (architectural) and technical (computational) as well.

Abstract:
China has become one of the world’s economic engines. One major driving force is the rapid urbanization. Such fast development results in resource and energy depletion, pollution and environmental deterioration. The government has recently endorsed green buildings and urged ministries to work out a national action plan. It is predicted that green building will be the next big thing in China. But before importing any foreign green technology and green designs, is there something to be learned from the Chinese ancestors? In the long history of China, the Chinese have always employed a system of construction with the influences of geography, climate, culture, philosophy, economy and politics deeply rooted in China, making the Chinese traditional architecture distinct. Embedded in the formation of the city, siheyuan 四合院, the courtyard house in Beijing was one exceptional dwelling example that inherited the quintessence of the thousand years of building experiences and knowledge of the ancestors. This traditional urban type not only celebrated the rich and unique cultural heritage of China, it also played an important role in maximizing the natural forces to create a pleasant and comfortable environment for living. Population growth, political and economic reforms over time however have drastically changed the fate of this historical heritage. Especially under the pressure of the fast development and economic boom after the introduction of the Open Door Policy in 1978, the traditional courtyards were the first to be demolished due to the lack of modern facilities and the inability to accommodate the growing population. They were often replaced by apartment blocks and high-rise towers – imported types based on planning regulations developed in the West, outside the cultural and environmental milieu of Beijing. As a result, the city is now filled with many energy intensive buildings that eat away both the “city’s essence” and the valuable natural resources. With the current policy and ambition of China, the teardown courtyard sites within the old city wall that are still waiting for development offer the potential to address the remediation and reinterpretation of the traditional typology in a contemporary city. The thesis investigates the essences of the traditional courtyard house and explores the way to apply such qualities to the design of a new courtyard typology in contemporary Beijing. The proposal anticipates a holistic approach on both environmental, social, cultural and economic level, so as to carry out preservation that manifests in experience rather than physical restoration, and to create a project that is truly sustainable.
