Abstract:
The Sikh religion being the most modern and scientific religion is unique as far as its content, philosophy and fait are concerned. It is a general believe that faith and logic cannot go hand in hand, but Sikh religion as such has no threat from science, rationality, logics and objectivity. This religion has evolved many leaders who showed their inbuilt leadership styles in their own ways, right from the time of its evolution. Much of literature till now has showed the compatibility between Sikh religion and leadership values. This research paper highlights some common characters of a Sikh, as

Abstract:
For the Sikhs, their scripture (Guru Granth) is the manifest body (deh) of their Gurus. But this quintessential Sikh metaphor has become so familiar an application that it has lost its “fundamental metaphoric quality.” We need to ask anew: what does it mean that the Guru Granth is the body of the Gurus? In their metaphorical relationship, the “text” and the “body” must maintain a dynamic tension—a simultaneous is and is not—so that the mind is forced to stretch and discover a new meaning. Using Philip Wheelwright’s framework and Gadamer’s hermeneutic lens, this paper explores the “widening exp

With the inauguration of the Khalsa in 1699 by the tenth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, a new understanding of ‘being Sikh’ was put in place. In examining the earliest prescriptive texts of the Khalsa, manifestations of Sikh religio-cultural identity and visual distinctiveness were deeply connected to the male Sikh body. This study locates Sikh women within a number of these early ritual and textual ordinances while also exploring how Sikh female religio-cultural materiality is contradistinct to the normative Khalsa male body. This paper argues that Guru Nanak came to be painted in Hindu-like frontal in single portrait, which implies the preexisting custom of the production and consumption of images of the Sikh Gurus. The idea that he is deified in these paintings is based on the theory that a frontal view is used for worshipping the sitter. Although Guru Nanak’s face was represented in three different modes, namely frontal, profile and three quarter face, in the late 17th and 18th centuries, a three-quarter view of the face has been dominant in his images since the 19th century, when his attire and accessories also

The discussion in this chapter focuses on the concept of darśan from a Sikh perspective by analysing teachings from the Guru Granth Sahib on the subject of 'seeing' the Divine. Sikhi (Sikh teachings) emphasises the Ultimate Divine as formless and experienced through the senses. Indeed, Sikhi refers to this experience as blissful union with one's Beloved. This chapter explores Sahaj, mystical union with the Divine, through an analysis of teachings around darśan in Sikh teachings. This thesis is a preliminary excursion analyzing narrative modes in janamsakhi literature of the Sikh tradition as a putative site of proselytization. Using a semiological methodology in combination with the writings of theorists on communication and reception of texts, I argue that reception of the sakhi "The Massacre of Saidpur" as found in "Janamsakhi Sri Guru Nanak Dev" (a critical edition of the B40 manuscript by Piar Singh) was meant to lead to emulatory orders of action. This sakhi depicts a meeting between the first Mughal ruler, Babar, and the first Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak. The

This dissertation sheds new light on the Purātan Janamsākhī, the earliest available account on the founder and most important figure of the Sikh tradition – Gurū Nānak (d. 1539 CE). Scholarship on Gurū Nānak has largely dismissed the significance of this text and has overlooked the fact that, after its composition in 1588 CE, the Purātan Janamsākhī remained the most widely circulated account of Gurū Nānak’s life for two centuries. This thesis engages with the manuscripts and studies of the text to provide a life-history of the Purātan Janamsākhī, and, in arguing for a reclamation of this accou
