Full textVarious studies were carried out on the ageing of epoxy resins under irradiations. In all cases, pure polymers were studied. The aim of our work managed by the CEA and the CNRS consists on studying the part of fillers and particularly the part of silica on ageing process under electron beam irradiations. Because of their wide use in industrial applications and especially in nuclear environment, the DGEBA-TETA resins (DiglycidylEther of Bisphenol A - TriEthyleneTetraAmine) were chosen. Those epoxy resins are difficult to analyse because of their insolubility. Some pure and nanometric silica filled chemical models which chemical structure very close to the one the DGEBA/TETA resin were synthesized and analysed with classical methods in organic chemistry. A major phenomenon of rupture of the C-O and C-N chemical bonds with creation of phenolic extremities, methylketon extremities, of primary and tertiary amines and notably enamine functions were revealed by the analyses. The quantitative 1H and 13C NMR analyses revealed the screen effect due to the silica and the reactions between the chemical species created by the irradiations and the silica surface. Thermic and thermodynamic analyses of the different epoxy resins in function of the irradiation dose and of the kind of silica showed the decrease of the glass transition temperature, of the relaxation temperature and of the crosslink density confirming the major phenomenon of bond ruptures during irradiations. With silica, the decrease of the crosslink density is slowed. This phenomenon can be explained with interactions between the nanometric silica surface and the epoxy resin offsetting the effect of the chain rupture on the resin mechanical properties. The 13C solid state NMR analyses confirmed the choice of the chemical models and permitted to detect the chemical species created by the irradiations. The analyse of the polarization transfers with 13C CP-MAS NMR spectroscopy revealed the rigidification of the nanometric silica filled resin and the reactions between the resin and the silica surface during irradiations. This study permits to assert that the silica fillers in the epoxy resins protect the network from the irradiations

Full textWhen a femtosecond laser beam is tightly focused onto transparent materials, strong field ionization followed by avalanche ionization may occur, and a fraction of laser energy is absorbed and transferred into the lattice resulting in local heating. The temperature within the irradiation zone will rise up to the melting or boiling point depending on the incident pulse fluence and material properties. As a result, either smooth modification, or well-shaped nanogratings or complex damage may occur. Coulomb explosion may also participate in the material removal process. In this thesis, we focus on the nanograting inscription on the surface of fused silica. We measure the pulse fluence which is required to induce surface nanogratings for different pulse-to-pulse spacing, uncover and quantify the incubation effect in the nanograting inscription process, and propose a modified incubation equation (ablation threshold as a function of pulse-topulse spacing). Using a scanning electron microscope, we examine the structural change on the surface induced by the combination of different writing parameters such as the pulse energy/fluence, pulse-to-pulse spacing and the depth of the focused light below the surface. We show the shot-to-shot evolution of nanogrooves in the static case for a small range of pulse fluence, and demonstrate that well-shaped nanogratings can be obtained with pulse fluence slightly above the reduced ablation threshold, and that the width and spacing of the nanogratings depend on the pulse-to-pulse spacing and pulse fluence. In particular, we propose a new model which consists of local intensity distribution and incubation effect. The progressive evolution of new local maxima and in turn the formation of new nanogrooves in pairs (static case) or in a self-replicating way (scanning case) at specific locations is in fact the physical focus behind the nanograting inscription, as is faithfully reproduced by the experiment. No previously reported model has ever been successful in that respect. Finally, we discuss and demonstrate the potential applications in direct writing of a controllable number of nanochannels and large-area nanogratings.

Full textScleractinian corals mainly grow in the shallow euphotic zone, exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), the most harmful part of the solar radiation. UVR increases with climate change and adds to the different environmental pressures that corals are facing. The aims of this thesis were to 1) better understand the effects of UVR on coral physiology, organic matter fluxes and associated bacteria; 2) assess the combined effects of UVR and thermal stress and/or nutrient level. Results show that UVR worsens the negative effect of temperature on coral physiology, similarly to nutrient depletion. Our results also indicate that the sensitivity to UVR stress (i.e. an increase in UVR) is species dependent and function of the symbiont density. The negative effects of UVR increase with the number of symbionts, likely due to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which cause cellular damages. In the thesis, we showed that the JNK signalling pathway (c-Jun N-terminal kinase), highly conserved in living organisms, is involved in the early response of corals to UVR and its activation is required to repress stress-induced ROS accumulation. Finally, organic matter release and mucus and coral-associated bacteria are also significantly impacted by UVR, which could contribute to important biochemical changes in reef waters. The work conducted in this thesis brings new insights into the effects of UVR on corals and highlights the importance of taking this environmental factor into account when predicting the future of coral reefs under climate change

Full textThe influence of natural radiation on electronic devices is a topic that is well-known in the space and aeronautics areas. This is not true for the transportation industries (automotive, rail) while the vulnerability of components in "ground" is real. With the massive development of hybrid/electric vehicles, power components such as semiconductor IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) and power MOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) will be used in large numbers in the power converters used in critical functions. The reliability of these components, based on recent technology, contrary to what is used for space applications must be assured. This work is aimed to assess the sensitivity of the investigated power devices considered as the core of the systems on energy conversion and identify physical phenomena inducing failure triggering and understand the different failure mechanisms of power components toward single event effects using TCAD simulation tool. The long term objective is to simplify these complex physical processes in order to develop prediction compact models. Such a development could be useful to achieve prediction tools dedicated to power components at the same maturity levels as those developed for digital electronics
