Abstract:
Mafic sill complexes are increasingly being shown to play a major role in the movement of magma around the upper crust in volcanic terranes and to have a role in mass extinction events in Earth history. Most of the current models of sill emplacement assume that brittle fracture operates at all points of sill emplacement. Within this thesis, a series of observations are presented from sheet intrusions in South Africa, USA and the UK showing that in certain situations, dependent on host rock lithology, the propagation of magma through normal brittle fracture can cease. In this circumstance a pre

The Pikku-Vaiskonselkä sill, situated in the Kevitsa area, northern Finland, was studied using core logging, field observations, petrography and whole-rock and mineral analysis. The aim of the Master’s project was to describe the intrusion and compare it with other layered intrusions in central Finnish Lapland, including the Kevitsa, Satovaara, Rantavaara intrusions, the Lower Suite of the Koitelainen intrusions, and layered sills the ca. 2.22 Ga gabbro-wehrlite association. The sample material from the Pikku-Vaiskonselkä sill consisted of drillcore samples (drillcores KV300 and KV305) and out

Abstract:
Intruded into the Palaeocene lava field and underlying Moine (Neoproterozoic) crystalline basement rocks around Loch Scridain, Isle of Mull, Scotland, is a suite of high-level, inclined, xenolithic sheets, ranging in composition from basalt, through andesite and dacite, to rhyolite. These sheets, associated with the Mull central volcano, were emplaced at approximately 58Ma. Three distinct (magma) groups are recognised. Group I consists of fine-grained, aphyric basalts and basaltic andesites, the most primitive of which has MORB-like chemical affinities. Group II predominantly comprises aphyric
