Abstract:
Mafic sill complexes are increasingly being shown to play a major role in the movement of magma around the upper crust in volcanic terranes and to have a role in mass extinction events in Earth history. Most of the current models of sill emplacement assume that brittle fracture operates at all points of sill emplacement. Within this thesis, a series of observations are presented from sheet intrusions in South Africa, USA and the UK showing that in certain situations, dependent on host rock lithology, the propagation of magma through normal brittle fracture can cease. These sheets, associated with the Mull central volcano, were emplaced at approximately 58Ma. Three distinct (magma) groups are recognised. The Palisades Sill contains an olivine-rich zone that has attracted scientific attention for over one hundred years. Despite the amount of focus, a definitive explanation for the origin of this layer has not been reached. Through the use of detailed petrographic analyses and electron microscopy, the aim of this study was to collect data on mineral phases from the Palisades Sill in order to better understand the history. Extremely broad ranges in mineral compositions indicate that the olivine-rich zone evolved through in situ equilibrium crystallization, implying that it was injected once the

This thesis compiles the results of a 3D seismic-based study of the geometry and emplacement mechanics of igneous sills and sill complexes intruded into basins along the NE Atlantic Margin. Dolerite sills were intruded into the Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene mud-dominated sediments of these basins during the Paleocene and Early Eocene, approximately synchronous with the onset of seafloor spreading between NW Europe and Greenland. This thesis reports on over 27 sills and 213 associated vents. The sills and vents were investigated using 3D seismic data, in a ~1000 km2 area, offshore Norway between the Møre and Vøring Basins (the Edvarda survey). A wide range of sill geometries are observed which are interpreted to be the result of five different processes acting on the sills. Three of these processes relate to how the host deforms. If sill intrusion causes deformation of the seafloor, creating folds, or the sills interact with folds created by neighbouring sills, sills are found to cross bedding (transgress) abruptly. Al

In eastern Australia, the New England Fold Belt (NEFB) comprises an ancient convergent margin that was active from the Paleozoic until the late Mesozoic. Considerable effort has been expended in understanding the development of this margin over the past twenty years.
