The Silvaco Atlas semiconductor modeling software was used to simulate an interdigitated back-surface-contact solar cell. The cell is modeled after the silicon-based Sunpower Corporation A-300 solar cell, which contains a number of unique features that give it advantages over conventional solar cells. This simulation attempted to match as closely as possible the results measured by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory from the A-300 cell in order to validate the model. This model was then used to investigate the effects of making the A-300 thinner, which would permit its use in military solar blanket applications. A thin and flexible solar cell is ideal for this application due to its lighter weight, making it portable and flexible, which increases its ruggedness. The ability to simulate an interdigitated back-surface-contact cell also allows future work using computer algorithms to improve power output results as well as investigations into using materials other than silicon, which may further improve power output.

Garfrerick, Adam R. "Modeling Heterogeneous Carbon Nanotube Networks for Photovoltaic Applications Using Silvaco Atlas Software." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/7345.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent developments in carbon nanotube technology have allowed for semi-transparent electrodes to be created which can possibly improve the efficiency of solar cells. A method for simulating the use of semi-transparent carbon nanotube networks as a charge collector for solar cells in Silvaco ATLAS software is presented in this thesis. Semi-transparent carbon nanotube networks allow for a greater area of charge collection on the surface of solar cells as well as a lower resistance path for charge carriers to travel to the top contact grid lines. These properties can decrease the required area of a solar cell covered by metal contacts, allowing a greater amount of light input. The metal contacts which transport charge carriers to the edge of the device can also be made thicker and more spread out, lowering the resistance in the metal gridlines of solar cells. The model for semi-transparent carbon nanotube networks presented in this thesis is incorporated into a solar cell which is simulated in Silvaco ATLAS software. The performance of a cell with and without the carbon nanotube network is compared, taking into account the limitations of the simulation software.

Schiavo, Daniel. "Modeling Radiation Effects on a Triple Junction Solar Cell using Silvaco ATLAS." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/7412.

Full text
Abstract:
In this research, Silvaco ATLAS, an advanced virtual wafer fabrication tool, was used to model the effects of radiation on a triple junction InGaP/GaAs/Ge solar cell. A Silvaco ATLAS model of a triple junction InGaP/GaAs/Ge cell was created by first creating individual models for solar cells composed of each material. Realistic doping levels were used and thicknesses were varied to produce the design parameters and create reasonably efficient solar cell models for testing. After the individual solar cells were built, defects simulating the damage caused by radiation were introduced into the semiconductor model. After showing that the defects had a noticeable effect on the characteristics of the individual cells, a triple-junction solar cell created by layering the individual cells was then modeled. Work from previous NPS theses provided the background for modeling solar cells and the effects of radiation using Silvaco ATLAS. Data from another thesis provided the number of defects associated with the different fluence levels simulated.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the ability to model a tunnel junction device using the ATLAS device simulator by Silvaco International. The tunnel junction is a critical component of a multijunction solar cell. This thesis will concentrate on simulating the tunnel junction for application as part of a multijunction solar cell. It will try several methods, in ATLAS device simulator, to produce a model of the tunnel junction that can later be used while designing multijunction devices. These methods will consist of the review of past work, attempting to modify past work to be applied in the current design, producing a new tunnel junction simulation from the ground-up, and review of the simulations of similar devices to learn if they can be modified and applied to making a working tunnel junction model.

Abstract:
The potential of designing a dual-junction Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS) photovoltaic cell is investigated in this thesis. Research into implementing a dual-junction solar cell, using a CIGS bottom cell and different thin-film designs as a top cell, was conducted in order to increase the current record efficiency of 20.3% for a single CIGS cell. This was accomplished through modeling and simulation using Silvaco ATLASTM, an advanced virtual wafer-fabrication tool. A Silvaco ATLASTM model of a single CIGS cell was created by utilizing actual solar cell parameters (such as layer thicknesses, gallium ratio, doping levels and materials properties) documented in different papers, and work from previous NPS theses provided the background for modeling with Silvaco ATLASTM. After the individual CIGS solar cells were built, a dual-junction cell was created by adding the layers of another CIGS solar cell whose parameters (layers thicknesses, Ga ratio) were varied to produce an optimum efficiency of 24%. This approach is promising to produce a multi-junction CIGS cell with record efficiency.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with modeling and simulations of kesterite solar cells with the aim of studying their physical mechanisms and improving the design of the devices. Synthetic kesterites are thin film materials made of cheap/earth-abundant elements. Two numerical models for a Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) and a Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) solar cell are proposed. The provided values of the material parameters, for all the layers of the solar cell, are obtained either from comparisons/analysis of data found in literature or, in some cases, from direct measurements. 1D and 2D simulations are performed: the software SCAPS is used to study the impact of the Molybdenum and the MoSe2 layers, present at the back contact of CZTSe solar cells. We investigate also the ideal properties of alternative interfacial layers that could replace the MoSe2 layer to improve the device performances. The transfer matrix method (TMM) and SCAPS are employed together to perform optoelectronic simulations with the aim of optimizing the thickness of the buffer (CdS) and the window (ITO) layers in order to maximize the short circuit current (JSC ) of the device. Finally Silvaco is used to perform 2D simulations of the CZTSe grain boundaries (GBs) present inside the polycrystalline kesterite absorbers. For the latter work, experimental Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) characterizations are performed in order to find possible correlations between the performance losses and the electrical activity of the GBs

Abstract:

In this thesis, the author analyzes the effect of temperature on the performance of photovoltaic cells using a virtual wafer fabrication tool called Silvaco ATLAS. Work from a previous Naval Postgraduate School thesis provided the initial InGaP/GaAs/Ge triple-junction solar cell design used in this analysis. As is often done, the previous work on this solar cell involved optimizing it at 300 K, even though operating temperatures are typically higher. Therefore, for this thesis, the author models each subcell of the multijunction solar cell at 275 to 400 K in 25-degree increments while varying their thicknesses and doping levels, as well as varying the molecular composition of InGaP. The author chose to vary these design parameters to observe their effect on performance and suggest a better design for operating at higher temperatures. The percent improvement increases to more than 11.9% as the temperature increases to 400 K when the author increases the mole fraction of InGaP and the doping in the GaAs emitter and the base of each subcell.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the electro-optical performances of infrared detectors based on photodiodes. The performances studied are the quantum efficiency and the modulation transfer function. The problematic is to understand which phenomenon impacts these performances for reducing the development time. In order to answer this problematic, this study is made through measurements and numerical simulations.Firstly, electro-optical performances are discussed with their link to the infrared market. Then, measurements and numerical computations are made in order to explain the reasons of the actual values. Finally, by computation, advance technologies are analyzed and compared for the modulation transfer function

Samb, Mamadou Lamine. Thesis, Rennes 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014REN1S157.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the modeling of TFTs based on microcrystalline silicon fabricated at low temperature. The challenge is to produce a valid model of TFT which enable us to provide an explanation of the phenomena observed experimentally and that could be the basis for a compact model. Firstly, an experimental study, in which it is shown the beneficial effect for the use of thin active layers for TFTs, has been performed. Indeed, the TFTs performances are better, when their active layers are more thin. The columnar growth of microcrystalline silicon structure and the bad interfaces state for thick active layer have an important part in the deterioration of the quality of TFTs. Thereafter , a simulation (on SILVACO ) of the behavior of TFTs with active layers of different thicknesses were made to try to provide electrostatic explanations. The same effects are caused mainly by an increase of the lateral electric field when the thickness of the active layer decreases for a defective material, promoting thereby the rapid formation of the channel. The bad quality of the front and rear interfaces has also a strong influence on the deterioration of electrical characteristics of TFTs. This influence is reduced by using a very thin active layer

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The mm-wave frequency range is being increasingly researched to close the gap between 100 to 1000 GHz, the least explored region of the electromagnetic spectrum, often termed as the 'THz Gap'. The ever increasing demand for compact, portable and reliable THz (Terahertz) devices and the huge market potential for THz system have led to an enormous amount of research and development in the area for a number of years. The Gunn Diode is expected to play a significant role in the development of low cost solid state oscillators which will form an essential part of these THz systems.Gunn and mixer diodes will 'power' future THz systems. The THz frequencies generation methodology is based on a two-stage module. The initial frequency source is provided by a high frequency Gunn diode and is the main focus of this work. The output from this diode is then coupled into a multiplier module. The multiplier provides higher frequencies by the generation of harmonics of the input signal by means of a non-linear element, such as Schottky diode Varactor. A realistic Schottky diode model developed in SILVACOTM is presented in this work. This thesis describes the work done to develop predictive models for Gunn Diode devices using SILVACOTM. These physically-based simulations provide the opportunity to increase understanding of the effects of changes to the device's physical structure, theoretical concepts and its general operation. Thorough understanding of device physics was achieved to develop a reliable Gunn diode model. The model development included device physical structure building, material properties specification, physical models definition and using appropriate biasing conditions. The initial goal of the work was to develop a 2D model for a Gunn diode commercially manufactured by e2v Technologies Plc. for use in second harmonic mode 77GHz Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems for automobiles. This particular device was chosen as its operation is well understood and a wealth of data is available for validation of the developed physical model. The comparisons of modelled device results with measured results of a manufactured device are discussed in detail. Both the modelled and measured devices yielded similar I-V characteristics and so validated the choice of the physical models selected for the simulations. During the course of this research 2D, 3D rectangular, 3D cylindrical and cylindrical modelled device structures were developed and compared to measured results. The injector doping spike concentration was varied to study its influence on the electric field in the transit region, and was compared with published and measured data.Simulated DC characteristics were also compared with measured results for higher frequency devices. The devices mostly correspond to material previously grown for experimental studies in the development of D-band GaAs Gunn devices. Ambient temperature variations were also included in both simulated and measured data.Transient solutions were used to obtain a time dependent response such as determining the device oscillating frequency under biased condition. These solutions provided modelled device time-domain responses. The time-domain simulations of higher frequency devices which were developed used modelling measured approach are discussed. The studied devices include 77GHz (2nd harmonic), 125 GHz (2nd harmonic) and 100 GHz fundamental devices.During the course of this research, twelve research papers were disseminated. The results obtained have proved that the modelling techniques used, have provided predictive models for novel Transferred Electron Devices (TEDs) operating above 100GHz.

Very High Energy gamma ray astronomy uses till now exclusively as detector the Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) to collect weak light flux of atmospheric showers. But an alternative is now emerging: Avalanche Photodiodes polarized in Geiger mode called "Geiger-APD". The PMT is a detector designed in the 70's which presents many advantages but also suffers from several drawbacks: size, weight, cost, sensitivity to magnetic field but especially difficulty to realize its pixilation in matrix. Geiger-APDs are semi-conductor devices made of PN junction integrated in a special technology to detect very low light flux, thanks to the polarization beyond the avalanche voltage. Geiger-APD presents very high photoelectron gain (˜106) strongly dependant on the polarization voltage beyond avalanche. These photodiodes present many advantages with respect to PMT, mainly as concerns miniaturization for applications based on imaging, such as the detection of Cerenkov flashes in gamma ray astronomy. In this thesis, we present the study, the design and the realization of a technological structure, based on Silicon. This structure has shown reliability to detect weak luminous flux with breakdown voltage at 12V and dark current below 10pA at breakdown. We also developed several models, physical and electrical, necessary to the technological optimization, as well to the development of control and readout circuits, i. E. The basis of any imaging technology. The work presented here consists in the study, the design and the realization of a matrix of high sensitivity pixels. A project of a Cerenkov telescope based on this innovative technology is also presented

Abstract:
Current leakage in GaN thin films limits reliable device fabrication. A variety of Ga and N rich MBE GaN thin films grown by Rf, NH3, and Rf+ NH3, are examined with electrical measurements on NiIAu Schottky diodes and CAFM. Current-voltage (IV) mechanisms will identify conduction mechanisms on diodes, and CAFM measurements will investigate the microstructure of conduction in GaN thin films. With CAFM, enhanced conduction has been shown to decorate some extended defects and surface features, while CAFM spectroscopy on a MODFET structure indicates a correlation between extended defects and field conduction behavior at room temperature. A remedy for poor conduction characteristics is presented in molten KOH etching, as evidenced by CAFM measurements, Schottky diodes, and MODFET's. The aim of this study is to identify anomalous conduction mechanisms, the likely cause of anomalous conduction, and a method for improving the conduction characteristics.
Abstract: This research sought after the understanding of the relationship construction process of the Vasco fan with the Vasco da Gama Club, Rio de Janeiro. The objectives of this study were: To know what takes millions of people to opt for supporting this club; to know the meaning of this club in their lives; to understand how those people live those experiences; and to identify which are the peculiar characteristics of the Vasco supporter. For such, the cultural approach was chosen, using as field data collection the participant observation technique, documental analysis, field recording and semi-structured interviews. This study indicated that the fan usually becomes interested in the soccer team because of family bonds, bonds of friendship, for living close to the club, for identifying himself or herself with the origin and/or history of the club or for living, in that choosing phase, moments of success or failure of the team. Besides, supporting a c1ubrepresents the possibility of "public expression of feelings", using an expression of Geertz. Soccer would be a way, among others, in which the individual could express his or her feelings in a public manner, which is built and is symbolically shown in the heart of a certain culture. The fan's intense relationship with the club does not let him or her separate the identity individual/fan. This identity is reached through experiences, which include moments of happiness and sadness in this history/relationship. With respect to the specific characteristics visualized in the relationship fan with Vasco, the anti club- the archrival club- was found, in this case, the Flamengo Club. The interesting thing about this relationship of opposition is exactly the sense that brings to the act of supporting Vasco, as if the Vasco fan detined himself or herself as a non Flamengo fan. The Vasco fan identifies his or her c1ub and its supporters as being different from the others by a series of values. For the Vasco supporter, Vasco differs from the other great clubs of Rio de Janeiro for being a representative of the minorities, as the black people, the poor, the portuguese and the suburban. This idea was perpetuated by the history of its consolidation in the twenties, by the representativeness of the "Victory Express" and by the conquests of the 80s and 90s. lt was also noticed a tension among the several forms of supporting, in which it is sought to rank who is a "more Vasco fan". For the fans, Vasco is a reference of time and space. Starting from the relationship built with this club, individuals position themselves and search for sense for their lives

Abstract:
This work regards the use of high performance computing (HPC) methods for a new bioinformatics challenge: the analysis of Terabyte-size data generated by the new ultra high throughput sequencing (UHTS) technology. As in microarray or mass spectrometry cases, public repositories are growing to store data from the next generation studies produced in laboratories around the world. These can be used to access to a large number of samples from experiments with different individuals, populations and sequencing platforms. Also experimental data of scientific articles are published in these stores, enabling to repeat and verify their results (reproducibility). An automatic downloader and analyzer system (D-Daemons architecture) is proposed to interface to a public repository of sequence reads, select all the experiments that match some research parameters, defined by a user, download them and apply an analysis pipeline to evidence their similarity or variability. A software pipeline based on this architecture and operating in a HPC environment has been developed to analyze the downloaded UHTS files in the shortest time possible. A case study of the system on “Colorectal Cancer (CRC) cell line” datasets and an aligner selection in a SNP discovery task on three RNA-Seq datasets (Human Breast tissue and of BT474 & MCF7 cell lines) are presented.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with freedom; it also deals with limits. As a basic representative fictional text I will use Em Liberdade, a fictional diary written by the cosmopolitan-Brazilian Silviano Santiago, to examine in which ways a markedly confessional literary prose of the late XX century conducts the pact it establishes with the reader to convince him/her of the web it has spun. This work, published in 1981, maintains a dialog with other works by the author, and synthesizes both the political as well as the aesthetic-literary positions this author has manifested throughout his trajectory as a professor, essayist, poet and prose writer. At the same time Em Liberdade reveals the vulnerability of analytical categories used by traditional literary theory for contemporary literature, it unfolds meta-literarily by offering – itself – the forms of reading that are most appropriate for the demands of consent in times of a shattered I.

Abstract:
Tissue-cultured shoots and plantlets usually have leaves with non-functional, open stomata and little epicuticular and cuticular wax, resulting in excess evapotranspiration after transplantation. Various strategies were evaluated to decrease ex vitro acclimatization difficulties for 'Silvan' blackberry, including transplanting unrooted shoots, increasing the medium agar concentration from 6 to 9 or 12 g/l and diluting the basal medium. Increased medium agar concentrations and medium dilution did not improve survival or growth. Stomatal function resumed sooner in new leaves of plantlets than shoots. High relative humidity ($>$95%) and low light intensity (90 $ mu$mol s$ sp{-1}$ m$ sp{-2}$) negatively affected stomatal closure both on acclimatizing transplants and greenhouse-grown plants. Guard cells developed on leaves in vitro were physiologically active but had apparent anatomical abnormalities that inhibited closure. A rapid clearing and staining method was developed for examination of foliar morphology using intact in vitro blackberry (Rubus sp. 'Silvan') and strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch. 'Totem') plantlets and sections of greenhouse-grown 'Silvan' and 'Totem' leaves. This method involved three steps: (1) removing the chlorophyll by autoclaving in 80% ethanol; (2) dissolution of the protoplasm using 5% NaOH at 80$ sp circ$C; (3) post-alkali treatment with 75% bleach (4.5% NaClO) at room temperature for tissue-cultured plantlets and at 55$ sp circ$C for greenhouse-grown leaves. Aqueous safranin (10 mg/l) was used for staining.

Abstract:
The thesis aims to study the construction of villain characters and their creations in designing the type of villainy in Brazilian soap operas for the 9 p.m. broadcast by Globo Channel in the decade from 2000 to 2010. We conclude that the process of creation and construction of the main villainous characters depends on the style of each author and belongs to the structure of narratives of their soap operas stories, to represent in fiction, the real-life social conflicts in the Brazilian society corresponding to the creation of each work. It has been selected, for example, three authors who built the villains more representative of the Brazilian soap operas of this period. This route resulted in the selection of the following works and authors of Brazilian soap operas: Passione, (2010/11), written by Silvio de Abreu, Lady of the destination, (2004/05), written by Aguinaldo Silva, and Celebrity, (2003/04), written by Gilberto Braga. The authors enabled the creation of these types of villainy that are part of urban life of the main Brazilian cities in the period defined. So, for a better understanding of the propositions of the thesis, we present information about the contexts corresponding to the historical moments of Brazilian and international society, which led directly or indirectly, to the central themes of the soap operas selected. It has shown in television dramas, relations with the social reality integrated to the daily Brazilian political, professional and domestic way of life for this period of time and present how to process, the motivations for the construction of the villainous characters triggered, for example, the different actions of corruption due to political, economic, psychological conflicts and social relations at the time represented in the soap operas and that has remained until these days. In this thesis have been reported, in parallel, studies on the melodrama genre and their forms of construction in different historical moments in the media, manifested in different ways, such as theater, film and the novel-feuilleton, that have brought benefits to the formal of the construction of characters-villains in these soap operas stories. Finally, as theoretical support for the reflections, we also selected certain concepts and notions such as reference, seized in the works of Mikhail Bakhtin, as dialogical relations in the communication, and mainly, on the notions of fictional monophonic and polyphonic character and the style of his studies on the poetics of the novel in the works of Dostoyevsky, compared to the poetics of television drama.

Abstract:

This thesis is the result of research on the work of critic-writer Silviano Santiago. We have proposed that in his writing, the criticism as well as the fiction dialogue between themselves in a supplementary way. Both of the discourses become a relationship of mutual support in which the essayistic criticism retakes and suggests some explicit topics in fictional works as well as fiction provides an overview of new proposals for the author`s literary criticism, building up a textual network produced by certain concerns, ideas and problems of the contemporary culture. For the research corpus, we have selected the works of criticism: Carlos Drummond de Andrade; Uma literatura nos trópicos; Vale quanto pesa; Nas malhas da letra; O cosmopolitismo do pobre; A vida como literatura; and Ora (direis) puxar conversa; as well as the fiction books: O banquete; Salto; O olhar; Crescendo durante a guerra numa província ultramarina; Em liberdade; Stella Manhattan; Uma história de família; Viagem ao México; Keith Jarrett no Blue Note; and Histórias mal contadas.

Abstract:
MCM-22 has a very peculiar pore structure with three independent pore systems: narrow sinusoidal channels (4. 1×5. 1 Å), large supercages (ø 7. 1 Å, height 18. 2 Å) accessible through (4. 0×5. 5 Å) openings and external cups (ø 7. 1 Å, depth 7. 0 Å). The aim of this thesis was to study the global catalytic properties and ascertain the catalytic role of each pore system of HMCM-22 zeolite (Si/Al=14. 5) on methylcyclohexane and n-heptane transformations at 350ºC. To this end, the participation of each pore system was established by selectively deactivating the supercages through coke deposition and poisoning the external cups acid sites. Supercages play the major catalytic role on both reactions. Sinusoidal channels present a very low activity due to high steric constraints. External cups acid sites are more active than those of supercages in methylcyclohexane transformation due to the absence of diffusion limitations. The results revealed that the external cups acid sites are not able to catalyze n-heptane reaction, which is ascribed to a lower acid strength and/or to the absence of confinement effect in the external cups. Adsorption of different molecules allowed the determination of the micropore volume of each pore system. An intermediate behavior of HMCM-22 between USHY (large pores) and HZSM-5 (intermediate pores) zeolites was observed on both reactions. The activities per acid site of HMCM-22 zeolite were closer to those of HZSM-5. Dealumination by acid leaching of the HMCM-22 zeolite removed mainly the acid sites located on the supercages and external cups, whereas those of the sinusoidal channels were almost not affected

The present work aims to describe and analyze Nelson Silva’s Afro-Brazilian Batuque and its members, by inserting them in the historical-anthropological discussion on race and racism in Brazil. Nelson Silva’s Afro-Brazilian Batuque is a choral, dance and rhythm group, composed by black men and women in the city of Juiz de Fora/MG, whose foundation dates back to 1964. The lyrics performed by the Batuque refer to the slavery period and the afro-brazilians situation in the nacional society, cadenced by rhythms as the moans, the “samba de roda”, the “baião”, the “maxixe”, the “maracatu”, the “maculelê”, the “jongos”, among others. Specifically, this study presents an ethnographic analysis of Nelson Silva’s Afro-Brazilian Batuque, seeking to reflect and understand how the group, in its entirety, and its members, in its particularities, present and stand before the Brazilian racial issue, from the observation of its presentations, stories, experiences, agenda. It was possible, therefore, to reach some conclusions. It is noticed that the Batuque, as a group, represents enslaved, through artistic performance and song lyrics, narrating periods of Brazilian history. In turn, its members are themselves heirs to the Brazilian and the Juizforano legacy, and, consequently, the effects of socio-cultural and historical conformation of the country and its locality. Also, we may notice a break of paradigms involving the group’s goals, as soon as its board changes from white people to black militants, reflection the black movement positions and strengthening the group’s commitment with the black cause.

Abstract:
Native American education has gone through many phases from the assimilation practices of removing Native children from their homes, family, and culture all the way up to Native Language Immersion schools where the curriculum is taught in both English and the Native tongue. Throughout all the educational changes one thing remains; Native American students are dropping out of school at an alarming rate. In order to improve education for Native students there must be a change in pre-service teacher preparation. The problem addressed in this study is that instructors of pre-service teachers need to understand the educational histories and experiences of successful educators of Native American students in the K-8 environment in order to learn how to better prepare undergraduate education majors. This qualitative multiple case study focused upon effective educators of Native American students. The following questions guided the inquiry: What is the formal educational (academic) history of successful educators of Native American students? What is the informal educational (non-academic) history of successful educators of Native American students? What experiences in their own classrooms have teachers identified as contributing to their success with educating Native American students? This research included a questionnaire and interviews with 32 teachers working in elementary schools located on reservations in Montana. A combination of whole staff focus group and individual in-depth interviews took place. The results of the transcribed and coded interviews were grouped under the main themes which emerged out of the three research questions and a few unique questions asked of the individual interviewees. Out of the four main themes; Effective and Successful Educators of Native American Students, Formal Education, Informal Education, and Classroom experiences, 17 subthemes emerged. The findings resulted in the following recommendations for new teachers of Native Americans: mentors; real life applications and cultural integration; community involvement; relationships; high expectations; self reflection. Also recommendations for Higher Education were presented: new class creation/offering; tribal college collaboration; utilize Native Americans as a resource; include information on teaching in low socioeconomic areas; student teaching/internships on a reservation. My hope is that these recommendations will improve education for Native American students.

The myth of the Double, always present in Literature since Antiquity, has been vigorously updated on Silviano Santiago s literary works, bringing new meanings amongst them and in particular that of the plurality of Human being. In this dissertation, I approach the writer s point of view in relation to the Difference and the literary craftsmanship, present in two of his novels, Stella Manhattan and A Family Story. On Silviano s books I compare the approach of questions like homoeroticism and madness in the Burgeoisie and Christian societies to those on films that, through the lenses of the Double, were focused on the same subject. I bring those questions up by adding the contribution of other authors such as Denilson Lopes, Julia Kristeva, Jurandir Freire Costa, Michel Foucault and others. I suggest that the Literature of Silviano Santiago is a conscious effort to lead the reader to esthetically experience the Other.
