This thesis describes an experimental and modelling study of the kinetics of silver-catalysed formaldehyde production via methanol partial oxidation and dehydrogenation. In methanol oxidation, the reaction is controlled by the gas phase diffusion of reactants towards the catalyst surface. The methanol-to-oxygen ratio at the catalyst wall is 100-200 times higher than that in the feed, which means that the reaction operates with large excess of methanol and therefore is solely controlled by the availability of O2 at the surface. A constant stoichiometry = 2.25 is found. In methanol dehydrogena

This research focuses on the development of a biological treatment process to enhance silver recovery from a low grade, silver-bearing manganese ore. These manganese oxide ores have been classified as refractory and thereby characterized noncommercial for the recovery and production of silver by conventional methods. A species of Bacillus polymyxa, which was isolated from the Crystal Hill Mine in southern Colorado, facilitated the reductive dissolution of manganese dioxide. Insoluble Mn(IV) was reduced to soluble Mn(II), and silver ions contained within the manganese oxide lattice were release

Abstract:
Since recent years, pollution of surface and drinking waters by chemical pollutants fromanthropogenic activities, in particular micropollutants, has become an important environmentalissue in industrialized countries. Indeed the majority of these molecules are toxic toliving organisms, even present at very low concentrations (pg.L−1 to μg.L−1). Some of themare referred as endocrine disrupting compounds. The existing conventional wastewater treatmentsare most of the time not adapted for the removal of these compounds. Among them, advanced oxidative processes give the better removal efficiencies,

Abstract:
The catalytic oxidation of bisphenol A (BPA) by laccase (EC 1.10.3.2) has recently attracted considerable attention because laccase can rapidly transform potentially persistent and toxic pollutants such as bisphenol A in the presence of molecular oxygen. Direct treatment of wastewaters containing bisphenol A would require excessive amounts of laccase if the enzyme is lost with the effluent and, thus, treatment would be cost-prohibitive. Therefore, strategies are desired for retaining the enzyme in the treatment system. It was envisioned that this could be accomplished by extracting poll
