Abstract:
<p>The antioxidant activity of collard greens was determined after exposed to eight different thermal treatments: 1) untreated raw group, 2) short simmer 3short simmer water 4) short simmer + saute’, 5) saute’ 6) long simmer 7) long simmer water 8) long simmer + saute’. After treatment, total phenolic content (TPC) expressed in gallic acid equivalents/sample concentration (GAE/conc.), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferrous ion chelating (FIC) antioxidant assays were determined. The sauté treated group showed the highest TPC (8.2858 GAE/conc.) followed by the raw group (8.0361) and the short simmer + sauté group (7.6227). The raw group showed the highest DPPH activity (7.7952% inhibition/conc.) followed by the sauté group (7.5877) and the short simmer + sauté group (7.4753). In both of these assays the addition of a sauté treatment to either short or long simmered treatment increased the antioxidant activity of samples compared to just the short or long simmer treatment alone. Additionally both TPC and DPPH assays showed greater antioxidant activity in the cooking water reserved from a long simmer treatment compared to the reserved cooking water of a short simmer treatment suggesting significant (p&lt;0.05) leeching of antioxidants from collard greens into the water related to the duration of aquathermal treatment. Similar trends were not found in the results of the FIC chelating assay where both long and short simmer treatment groups showed the highest chelating abilities and the reserved cooking water from both treatments showed the lowest chelating abilities. This suggests that chelators contained in collard greens were not relatively water soluble and therefore not negatively affected byaquathermal treatments.</p>

Abstract:
Equal numbers of dressed, bagged whole frying chickens from major Oregon and southern and midwestern processors were purchased from retail markets in each of the four seasons in 1988 for a total of 288 samples. Birds were stored at 3°C for 6 d. Sensory evaluation was done by a minimum of 9 and a maximum of 12 trained panelists using 9-point scales. The flavor and intensity of cooked meat and skin, the aroma and intensity of raw and simmered meat, and raw sliminess were evaluated. Total aerobic microorganisms, psychrotrophic microorganisms, and pseudomonads and thermophilic Campylobacter (two seasons) were determined on raw samples. A slime smear test was also used to determine sliminess. The season and sources of fryers had no significant effect on the microbial counts and sensory qualities. Whether the chicken was evaluated before the “sell-by” date on the package or after was not significantly related to sensory scores or microbial numbers. The mean scores for flavor of cooked meat and skin and aroma of raw and simmered meat were all above fair. Only the raw aroma intensity was significantly correlated (r=−0.88) to the aroma quality. The slime smear tests had a positive relationship (p&lt;0.05) to the raw sliminess score by panelists and to microbial counts. Correlations between microbial counts and flavor of cooked meat and aroma of raw and simmered meat were all significant but weak. The narrow range of microbial counts may explain the weakness of correlations found. Cephalothin-resistant, thermophilic Campylobacter was recovered from 42% of the raw birds.

Abstract:
2007 appeared to be a year of political and economic continuity in Malaysia. The government won three by-elections. The economy grew at 5.6%. Tensions over ethnic relations and Islamization simmered, though with probably no greater intensity than in past years. And foreign relations were smoothly conducted. But in an extraordinary scandal, a prominent political advisor went on trial for abetting the murder of his former mistress.

Is there a conflict between development on the one hand and democracy and/or human rights on the other? The issue began to be seriously examined some forty years ago1 and the controversy has simmered because there has been empirical evidence to indicate at least some shortterm validity to those who do see a conflict and press the primacy of growth. Abstract:
This paper seeks to analyze the nature of the German minorities in the Czech Republic and Poland. In order to achieve this goal, the relationship between Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic and Poland with the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Federal Republic of Germany/FRG) forms an essential intellectual backdrop to our main theme. Reference to the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (German Democratic Republic/GDR) will be made as and where appropriate. As we shall see, tensions simmered between the Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands (Socialist Unity Party of Germany/SED) and the Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza Zjednoczona (Polish United Workers' Party/PZPR), and in reality relations between the two sides were poor. Reference will be made to wartime German occupation policy in both Poland and the Czech lands. Due attention will also be paid to the consequent expulsion of ethnic Germans from Poland and Czechoslovakia. However, due to limitations of space these themes, that have been exhaustively dealt with elsewhere, do not form part of our main focus of study.

Abstract:
The life of the Ukrainian nation developed in such a way that due to unfavorable historical circumstances there were few long-term phenomena in it. But in the pages of the history of each nation there is imprinted its image – intelligence, spirituality, dignity, the ability to build or destroy, consume or create, act or contemplate. National identity is considered to be a fundamental feature of the nation, that is the most comprehensive combination of mind and spirit, which are acquired and transmitted from generation to generation. One prominent personality of I. Vyhovsky is pointed out as a glorious figure in the history of the Ukrainian Cossack state. During his life I. Vyhovsky had a number of followers mainly among the gentry who supported him after collapse of relations with Moscow in 1657. The opposing forces which operated against I. Vyhovsky were not only from pro-Moscow adherents but from the senior Cossacks as well as peasants. Those ones were talented at gossiping, slandering. After I. Vyhovsky’s death the oponents simmered dowm, however, the facts related to his political and statebuilding activities have been preserved since that period.

West, Virginia Anne. "Stability of Selected B Vitamins in Thermally-Treated Pinto Beans." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5769.

Full text
Abstract:
Beans are a commonly consumed food and a staple in many regions worldwide. Pinto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), categorized as legumes, are dried seeds from plants and are high in protein, carbohydrate and fiber, and low in fat. They are also a good source of various minerals and well as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, and folate Beans are typically soaked and thermally processed before consumption. Different processing methods can impact the composition of beans. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of thermal treatments on vitamin concentration in pinto beans. Beans were simmered, canned, dried-flaked, or dried-extruded, and measured for thiamin, riboflavin, folate, and vitamin B6. Beans were then reheated and measured again for vitamin concentration. Vitamin loss was comparable between the most commonly consumed stages of processing: Simmered, canned reheated, dried-flaked reheated and dried-extruded reheated. The only statistically significant differences were that simmering caused the least amount of degradation of thiamin and dried-flaked product had the least amount of vitamin B6 degradation. Though dried-flaked and dried-extruded beans generally decreased in vitamin concentration, these two products were comparable to the simmered and canned reheated products. This suggests that drying is a nutritionally acceptable means of processing pinto beans, resulting in products that are more economical to transport and more convenient to prepare.

Andriolo, Lena. "Impact des combustibles sphere-pac innovants sur les performances de sûreté des réacteurs à neutrons rapides refroidis au sodium." Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE), 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015GREAI067/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Future sodium cooled fast reactors (SFRs) have to fulfill the GEN-IV requirements of enhanced safety, minimal waste production, increased proliferation resistance and high economical potential. This PhD project is dedicated to the evaluation of the impact of innovative fuels (especially minor actinides bearing oxide sphere-pac fuels) on the safety performance of advanced SFRs with transmutation option. The SIMMER-III code, originally tailored to mechanistically analyze later phases of core disruptive accidents, is employed for accident simulations. During the PhD project, the code has been extended for a better simulation of the early accident phase introducing the treatment of thermal expansion reactivity effects and for taking into account the specifics of sphere-pac fuels (thermal conductivity and gap conditions). The entire transients (from the initiating event to later accident phases) have been modeled with this extended SIMMER version. Within this PhD work, first the thermo-physical properties of sphere-pac fuel have been modeled and casted into SIMMER-III. Then, a new computational method to account for thermal expansion feedbacks has been developed to improve the initiation phase modeling of the code. The technique has the potential to evaluate these reactivity feedbacks for a fixed Eulerian mesh and in a spatial kinetics framework. At each time step, cell-wise expanded dimensions and densities are calculated based on temperature variations. Density factors are applied to the expanded densities to get an equivalent configuration (in reactivity) with original dimensions and modified densities. New cross sections are calculated with these densities and the reactivity of the equivalent configuration is computed. The developed methods show promising results for uniform and non-uniform expansions. For non-uniform expansions, model improvement needs have been identified and neutronics simulations have been carried out to support future SIMMER extensions. Preliminary results are encouraging. In the third part of the PhD, two core designs with conventional and sphere pac fuels are compared with respect to their transient behavior. These designs were established in the former CP-ESFR project: the working horse core and the optimized CONF2 core (with a large sodium plenum above the core for coolant void worth reduction). The two fuel design options are compared for steady state and transient conditions (Unprotected Loss of Flow accident, ULOF) either at beginning of life (BOL) or under irradiated conditions. Analyses for sphere-pac fuel reveal two main phases to consider at BOL. At start-up, the non-restructured sphere-pac fuel shows a low thermal conductivity compared to pellet fuel of same density. However, the fuel restructures quickly (in a few hours) due to the high thermal gradients and its thermal conductivity recovers. The fuel then shows a behavior close to the pellet one. The study also shows that the CONF2 core leads to a very mild transient for a ULOF accident at BOL. The large upper sodium plenum seems to effectively prevent large positive reactivity insertions. However, stronger reactivity and power peaks are observed under irradiated conditions or when americium is loaded in the core and lower axial blanket. This PhD work demonstrates, under current simulation conditions, that sphere-pac fuels do not seem to cause specific safety issues compared to standard pellet fuels, when loaded in SFRs. The accurate simulation of core thermal expansion reactivity feedbacks by means of the extended SIMMER version plays an important role in the accident timing (simulations confirm the expected delay in the first power peak) and on the energetic potential compared to the case where these feedbacks are omitted. The analyses also confirm the mitigating impact of a large sodium plenum on transients with voiding potential. The behavior of sphere-pac fuel in these conditions opens a perspective to its practical application in SFRs

Abstract:
Governing key phenomena in core disruptive accidents (CDAs) in sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) are supposed to be (1) fuel pin failure and disruption, (2) molten pool boiling, (3) melt freezing and blockage formation, (4) duct wall failure, (5) low-energy disruptive core motion, (6) debris-bed coolability, and (7) metal-fuel pin failure with eutectics between fuel and steel [1]. Although the systematic assessment program for SIMMER-III [4–7] has provided a technological basis that SIMMER-III is practically applicable to integral reactor safety analyses, further model development and validation efforts should be made to make future reactor calculations more reliable and rational. For mechanistic model development, a mesoscopic approach with the COMPASS code [1, 2, 3] is expected to advance the understanding of these key phenomena during event progression in CDAs. The COMPASS code has been developed since FY2005 (Japanese Fiscal Year, hereafter) to play a complementary role to SIMMER-III. In this paper, the overall analysis of SCARABEE-BE+3 test with the SIMMER-III and those with COMPASS, focusing the duct wall failure in a small temporal and spatial window cut from the SIMMER-III analysis results of the test, are described.

Abstract:
This paper describes experimental analyses using the SIMMER-III computer code, which were precedently carried out to give boundary conditions for the integral verification of the new COMPASS code, which is based on MPS method. Two topics of key phenomena in core disruptive accidents were presented in this paper: molten fuel freezing and dispersion; and boiling behavior of molten fuel pool. Related experimental database are reviewed to select appropriate experiments. To analyze the fuel freezing behavior, the GEYSER out-of-pile and the CABRI-EFM1 in-pile experiments were selected. The SIMMER-III calculations were in good agreement with fuel penetration lengths measured in a series of the GEYSER experiments. The fuel freezing behavior in the CABRI-EFM1 experiment was also reasonably simulated by SIMMER-III. The boiling pool consisting principally of molten fuel/steel mixtures is characterized by the heat transfer between fuel and steel. The CABRI-TPA2 experiment has suggested low transient heat flux from fuel to steel due to a steel vapor blanketing around a steel droplet. SIMMER-III well simulated the steel boiling behavior observed in the CABRI-TPA2 experiment by applying reduced heat transfer coefficients between fuel and steel. These experimental analyses by SIMMER-III have also identified key processes to be clarified by mesoscopic simulations using the COMPASS code.

Abstract:
The “Institut de Radioprotection et de Suˆrete´ Nucle´aire”, as the technical support of the French Safety Authority, carries out studies and research to analyze and assess the safety of all nuclear plants. In this frame IRSN studies the feasibility of modeling Material Testing Reactor core with SIMMER-III code, for simulation of reactivity initiated accidental transients. The SIMMER-III multi-physics code system was initially developed for mechanistic safety analyses of liquid metal cooled fast reactors while employing coupled spatial neutron kinetics and thermal hydraulics models. Neutronics and thermal-hydraulics SIMMER-III models have been extended to safety analyses for water cooled and moderated reactors. The use of a code like SIMMER-III requires approximations; it computes a simplified R-Z geometry and chemistry description of the core that must be validated. The methods applied consist here in developing models of the same reactor on several scales of detail. The first step is the validation of the cross section condensation for deterministic APOLLO2 calculation against Monte Carlo TRIPOLI4 2D model. Temperature effects, kinetic parameters and void coefficients on the whole core are then calculated on a 2D APOLLO2 model, using the Method of Characteristics. These parameters are also computed with a 3D combined transport and diffusion calculations by means of APOLLO2/CRONOS2 calculations, validated against a TRIPOLI4 3D precise reference model. The final step is the validation of the simmer-like R-Z geometry in APOLLO2 Sn and Pij. Finally, an R-Z geometry has been computed in SIMMER-III, for the calculation of the kinetic parameters and temperature coefficients. This validation method has been applied to Jules Horowitz Reactor, a French Material Testing Reactor currently in commissioning by the CEA. This leads to conclude that discrepancies due to simplifications are acceptable. Moreover SIMMER-III shows quite a good agreement with CEA ring calculation on the kinetic parameters. Concerning neutronics feedbacks coefficients, further analyses remain necessary.

Abstract:
To avoid settling of molten materials directly on the vessel wall in severe accident sequences, the implementation of a ‘core catcher’ device in the lower plenum of sodium fast reactor designs is considered. The device is to collect, retain and cool the debris, created when the corium falls down and accumulates in the core catcher, while interacting with surrounding coolant. This Fuel-Coolant Interaction (FCI) leads to a potentially energetic heat and mass transfer process which may threaten the vessel integrity. For simulations of severe accidents, including FCI, the SIMMER code family is employed at KIT. SIMMER-III and SIMMER-IV are advanced tools for the core disruptive accidents (CDA) analysis of liquid-metal fast reactors (LMFRs) and other GEN-IV systems. They are 2D/3D multi-velocity-field, multiphase, multicomponent, Eulerian, fluid dynamics codes coupled with a fuel-pin model and a space- and energy-dependent neutron kinetics model. However, the experience of SIMMER application to simulation of corium relocation and related FCI is limited. It should be mentioned that the SIMMER code was not firstly developed for the FCI simulation. However, the related models show its basic capability in such complicate multiphase phenomena. The objective of the study was to preliminarily apply this code in a large-scale simulation. An in-vessel model based on European Sodium Fast Reactor (ESFR) was established and calculated by the SIMMER code. In addition, a sensitivity analysis on some modeling parameters is also conducted to examine their impacts. The characteristics of the debris in the core catcher region, such as debris mass and composition are compared. Besides that, the pressure history in this region, the mass of generated sodium vapor and average temperature of liquid sodium, which can be considered as FCI quantitative parameters, are also discussed. It is expected that the present study can provide some numerical experience of the SIMMER code in plant-scale corium relocation and related FCI simulation.
