Abstract:

This thesis aims to make a significant contribution to our understanding of the history of biblical criticism in the seventeenth century. Its central objective is to put forward a new interpretation of the work of the Oratorian scholar Richard Simon. It does so by placing Simon's work, above all his Histoire critique du Vieux Testament (1678), in the context of the great increase in critical study of the text of the Bible that occurred after 1620. The problems and questions that confronted European scholars at this time were profound, as new manuscript discoveries combined with existing learned and polemical debates in such a way that scholars were forced reconsider their opinions on the history and text of the Old Testament. Rather than study these works solely in the discrete tradition of the history of scholarship, however, this thesis shows why they have to be considered in the context of the print culture that made their production possible, the confessional divisions that shaped and deepened the significance of their philological arguments, and the intellectual cooperation, exchange, and disagreement that determined how contemporaries understood them. The results of this research contribute to existing scholarship in several significant ways, of which four stand out for special emphasis. First, through extensive archival research it markedly revises our current understanding of the work of Jean Morin, Louis Cappel, Johannes Buxtorf II, and Richard Simon. Second, it shows that the history of biblical criticism must consider the work of Catholic scholars in the same level of detail as Protestant scholars. Third, it breaks the link between innovative philological and historical work and radical theological or political thought. Fourth, it calls into doubt the current consensus that seventeenth-century scholarly life is best understood through the concept of the international and inter-confessional 'Republic of Letters'.

Abstract:

Notre travail se compose de deux chapitres. Dans le premier, nous faisons la distinction entre la notion de causation, fait que quelqu'un ou quelque chose fait en sorte qu'un etat de choses se realise, et de causalite, specifiant que tout a une cause. Ensuite, nous rendons compte des travaux de kayne, zubizarreta ainsi que de l'hypothese de jackendoff en mettant en evidence leurs limites. Dans le deuxieme, nous presentons la thorie de la grammaire fonctionnelle de dik dont les composants syntaxique et semantique font partie du cadre de la pragmatique. En deuxieme lieu, nous demontrons, grace au test de la negation de l'effet, qu' une distinction s'impose entre les causatives et les structures apparentees telles que celles de requete et les permissives. En troisieme lieu, nous analysons la question de la formation des predicats causatids avant d'etudier les trois types des causatives et les questions ayant trait aux etats de chose de celles qui ont des predicats-input, a la causation directe indirecte et intentionnelle non-intentionnelle, au degre de controle de l'argument cause, et, enfin, aux regles des causatives. Nous terminons ce chapitre par l'etude de la force illocutionnaire et l'ordre des constituants descausatives. En conclusion, nous montrons l'importance de la grammaire de dik
This work is divided into two chapters. In the first one, we establish a distinction between the notion of causation, the fact that some one or something brings it about that a state of affairs obtains, and tht of causality, specifying that everything has got a cause. Then, we account for the some tretments of causative structures within the contemporary linguistic theories. In the second chapter, we first present the theory of functional grammar of simon c. Dik. The syntactic and semantic components of this theory are part of the pragmatics framework. Thus functional grammar does not restraint the notion of grammar in isolated sentences, but is shows that thos sentences may take place in coherent context. Second, thanks to the effect detachment test, we show that it is necessary to establish a distinction between causatives and similar structures as requestives and permissives. Third, we analyse the question of causative predicates formation, before studying the three types of causatives. We end this chapter by studying the illocutionary force and the ordre of constituents. In the conclusion, we justify our choice of functional grammar

Cette thèse a pour objectif d’analyser le discours orientaliste de Saint-Simon et des saint-simoniens en s’appuyant sur les analyses de l’orientalisme moderne d’Edward W. Said. Celles-ci s’inscrivent en faux contre une forme de compréhension de l’Autre — saisi dans son extériorité — et contre la tendance « occidentale » à fixer l’identité et la nature de ce même Autre dans diverses catégories dont la source est puisée dans la propre culture des observateurs « critiques ». Dans un premier temps, afin de comprendre la problématique de Said, ce travail tente d’examiner les thèses de son Orientalisme tout en prenant en compte les limites de certaines de ses analyses souvent présupposées ; analyses que je cherche à confronter au discours de Saint-Simon et des saint-simoniens. Dans un deuxième temps, je me propose de lire Saint-Simon comme transition sociale en analysant de l’intérieur un discours qui s’inscrit dans une perspective européocentrique de l’histoire des civilisations. Finalement, cette recherche tente de l’analyser les discours des saint-simoniens sur l’Orient et leurs diverses représentations « orientales », inspirées par une foi indubitable dans le progrès de l’histoire et guidées par une certitude de pouvoir sceller la réconciliation de l’Orient et de l’Occident à partir de la propagation de la doctrine saint-simonienne. Les représentations des saint-simoniens sur l’Orient, même si elles ont leurs propres caractéristiques, différentes de celles du discours orientaliste dominant de l’époque, se révèlent inscrites dans les mêmes limites de la vision expansionniste de l’occident au détriment de l’Orient : européocentrisme, absence d’accès à la société orientale, légitimité de l’occupation, etc. Ce travail se propose de montrer que le discours saint-simonien sur l’Orient se rapporte davantage aux saint-simoniens eux-mêmes — c’est-à-dire, à leur doctrine, à leur vision et à leur désir — qu’à la réalité des Orientaux. Dans la plupart des cas, pour les saint-simoniens, les Orientaux sont l’objet de leur entreprise, mais non leur partenaire
The objective of this study is to analyze the orientalist discourse of Saint Simon and the Saint-Simonians on the base of the analyzes of the modern orientalism by Edward W. Said that criticize the understanding of the Other whiche, based on the notion of exteriority, tends to fix the identity and the nature of the Other in various categories formed in his own culture. Firstly, in order to understand the problematic of Said, this study tries to examine the discussions of the Orientalism and their limits whose analyzes are assumed, in this work, to contribute to better understand the discourse of the saint-simoniens. In the second part of this work, it is important to regard the ideas of Saint-Simon as that of social transition and to examine his discourse which is part of a eurocentric perspective on the history of civilizations. Finally, the study tries to analyze the discourse of the Saint-Simonians about the Orient, which consists of various representations inspired by their belief in the progress of the history and in the reconciliation of the Orient and the Occident by their Saint-Simonian doctrine. These representations show the same part of the limits of the expansionist vision of the Orient as the orientalism of the period even though they have their own characteristics that are different from those of the dominant orientalist discourse of the period: eurocentrism, lack of access to the oriental society, legitimacy of the occupancy etc. This work intends to show that discourse of the saint-simoniens on the Orient is related more to themselves than the Orientals considering that the Orient is generally excluded from their discourse on the Orient

Abstract:

Cette thèse est une étude des modalités épistémiques en tibétain standard parlé. Celles-ci sont généralement exprimées par un système de terminaisons verbales appelées 'les terminaisons épistémiques'. Elles véhiculent différents degrés de certitude du locuteur concernant la réalité de son énoncé. La thèse est composée de cinq chapitres. Le premier chapitre théorique traite de la modalité en général et de ses corrélats, le temps et l'aspect. Nous nous appuyons sur les travaux de Palmer (1986), Dik (1997) et Gosselin (2005). Le second chapitre est une présentation de la situation linguistique au Tibet et une caractéristique morphologique et syntactique du tibétain standard parlé. Le troisième chapitre se concentre sur le système des terminaisons épistémiques en les analysant des points de vue conceptuel, fonctionnel et syntactique. Nous montrons que ces terminaisons, tout comme les terminaisons évidentielles (médiatives) véhiculent également des valeurs évidentielles (sensorielle, factuelle, égophorique) et qu'elles sont en principe employées dans les phrases affirmatives et négatives, et non dans les phrases interrogatives. Le quatrième chapitre est une classification de différents types des terminaisons épistémiques. En tout, nous décrivons 44 terminaisons épistémiques et construisons leur paradigme aspecto-temporel. Enfin, le cinquième chapitre traite de la compatibilité des verbes secondaires avec les terminaisons épistémiques. Pour conclure, une douzaine de types des terminaisons épistémiques sont employés dans la langue parlée. This dissertation is a study of epistemic modalities in spoken Standard Tibetan. They are generally conveyed by a system of verbal endings called 'epistemic endings'. These endings express various degrees of the speaker's certainty of the actuality of his utterance. The dissertation consists of five chapters. The first chapter is theoretic dealing with modality in general, and with the related categories of tense and aspect. I draw on the works of Palmer (1986), Dik (1997) and Gosselin (2005). The second chapter presents the linguistic situation in Tibet and characterizes spoken Standard Tibetan morphologically and syntactically. The third chapter concentrates on the system of epistemic endings analyzing them from a conceptual, functional and syntactic point of view. It is demonstrated that epistemic endings, just like evidential endings, also convey secondary evidential meanings (sensory, factual, egophoric) and that they are normally used in affirmative and negative sentences, and not in interrogative sentences. The fourth chapter is a classification of the various types of epistemic endings. Altogether, 44 epistemic endings are described and their tense-aspect paradigm is built. Finally, the fifth chapter deals with the compatibility of the secondary verbs with epistemic endings. In conclusion, a dozen of types of epistemic endings are commonly used in the spoken language. Com vistas a contribuir para os estudos gramaticais das unidades terminológicas complexas (UTCs), a presente pesquisa objetivou analisar o processo de formação de 201 UTCs veiculadas no glossário da Associação Latino-Americana de Integração partindo da Teoria da Gramática Funcional (TGF) de Dik (1989), voltada à estrutura oracional da língua geral, e da proposta de adaptação desse modelo feita por Café (1999) para o reconhecimento de UTCs na área da Biotecnologia de Vegetais. Para tanto, primeiramente expusemos as características conceituais e constitutivas dessas unidades, assumindo o posicionamento de que uma UTC é o resultado de uma oração reduzida; logo depois apresentamos a TGF e a proposta de adaptação de Café (1999). A partir dos pressupostos da teoria e da proposta de adaptação, as UTCs foram divididas em duas categorias conforme o estatuto de sua base: UTCs de base deverbal e UTCs de base não deverbal. As construções de base deverbal foram analisadas por regra de predicação dikiana; para tanto, partiu-se da análise da estrutura oracional subjacente depreendida da definição da UTC proposta no glossário, contrapondo essa análise com as regras de reconhecimento de UTCs de Café (1999) para a observação da passagem do nível oracional ao sintagmático, o que possibilitou explicitar diferenças no marco predicativo dos níveis em questão. No caso das UTCs de base não deverbal, elas foram analisadas via regra geral de formação termo-predicado, sendo também contrapostas a estrutura sintagmática observada e as regras de reconhecimento de Café (1999). Os dados apontam que, no caso das UTCs de base deverbal, há a tendência de manutenção do marco predicativo dikiano oracional no sintagma e da transformação dos satélites oracionais em estruturas argumentais sintagmáticas; além disso, foram indicadas as relações conceituais mais frequentemente observadas nas UTCs, bem como propostas novas regras de reconhecimento, descrições morfossintáticas e relações conceituais.
Our aim is to contribute to grammatical studies on complex terminological units by analyzing the development of CTUs published in the Latin American Integration Association glossary. Our study uses Dik’s Functional Grammar Theory prescriptions concerning the clause structure of general language and Café’s adaptation of such theory for the purpose of recognizing Plant Biotechnology CTUs. First of all, we expose the constitutive and conceptual characteristics of these units, assuming that a CTU is the result of a reduced clause. Second, we introduce Dik’s FGT and Café’s adapting model. Third, inspired on Dik's and Café's theories, we classify CTUs according to the nature of their bases, deverbative or non-deverbative. We examine the former using Dik’s predication rule, beginning with an analysis of the underlying structure of a clause; next, we compare it with Café's recognition rules of CTUs in order to verify the passage from the clause level to the syntagmatic level. We were then able to contrast the predicative frame of both levels. Regarding those CTUs of non-deverbative basis, we analyze their development according to the general rule of term-predicate formation and compare its syntagmatic structure with Café’s recognition rules. The data indicate that, in deverbative-basis CTUs, Dik’s clause predicative frame in the syntagm tends to continue; on the other hand, clause satellites tend to be transformed in syntagmatic argument structures. Finally, we present the concept relations that are most frequently observed in the CTUs of our corpus, as well as new recognition rules, morphosyntactic descriptions and concept relations.
Con miras a contribuir a los estudios gramaticales de las unidades terminológicas complejas (UTC), esta investigación tuvo por objetivo analizar el proceso de formación de 201 UTC vehiculizadas en el glosario de la Asociación Latinoamericana de Integración partiendo de la Teoría de la Gramática Funcional (TGF) de Dik (1989), orientada a la estructura oracional de la lengua general, y de la propuesta de adaptación de ese modelo presentada por Café (1999) para el reconocimiento de UTC del área de la Biotecnología de Vegetales. Para ello, primeramente expusimos las características conceptuales y constitutivas de esas unidades, asumiendo la posición de que una UTC es el resultado de una oración reducida; luego presentamos la TGF y la propuesta de adaptación de Café (1999). A partir de los presupuestos de la teoría y de la propuesta de adaptación, se dividieron las UTC analizadas en dos categorías según el estatuto de su base: las de base deverbal se analizaron por regla de predicación dikiana; para lo cual se partió del análisis de la estructura subyacente que se deduce de la definición de la UTC propuesta en el glosario y del contrapunto de ese análisis con las reglas de reconocimiento de UTC de Café (1999) para la observación del paso del nivel oracional al sintagmático, lo que posibilitó explicitar diferencias en el marco predicativo de los niveles en análisis . En el caso de las UTC de base no deverbal, se analizó el proceso de creación de las mismas por regla general de formación término-predicado, contraponiendo además la estructura sintagmática con las reglas de reconocimiento de Café (1999). Los datos apuntan a que, en el caso de UTC de base deverbal, existe la tendencia de mantenimiento del marco predicativo dikiano oracional en el sintagma y de la transformación de los satélites oracionales en estructuras argumentales sintagmáticas; además, se indicaron las relaciones conceptuales más frecuentemente observadas en las UTC y al mismo tiempo se propusieron nuevas reglas de reconocimiento, descripciones morfosintácticas y relaciones conceptuales.

La présente thèse est une discussion sur l’aspect de roman-critique de l’œuvre de Marcel Proust, À la recherche du temps perdu (1913-1927). Tout d’abord entamée sous forme de fragments critiques intitulés le Contre Sainte-Beuve, elle se voit, au cours de la rédaction, transformée en un roman. Cette évolution est clairement visible à travers les nombreuses réflexions sur la littérature présentes dans l’œuvre, mais quelle en est la signification ? Notre hypothèse est que l’intérêt de Proust est passé du discours monologique de la critique à celui de la description romanesque des mœurs autour de la littérature. Afin de la justifier, nous examinons les divers aspects des personnages qui parlent de la littérature : nous analysons la manière dont ils évoquent Mme de Sévigné, le duc de Saint-Simon, Victor Hugo et Honoré de Balzac, les quatre écrivains les plus fréquemment mentionnés. Nous comprenons ainsi, que les opinions manifestées par les personnages représentent la réception de chacun des auteurs en question, réception liée à leur caractère et rôle dans le roman. Nous constatons donc que Proust fait avant tout une description de différentes attitudes concernant la littérature sous forme de roman, que la démonstration de ses propres opinions sous forme d’essai critique
In this thesis, we discuss the aspect of “critique-novel” of Marcel Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu (1913-1927). Proust originally undertook this novel as a series of fragments of critique that are titled le Contre Sainte-Beuve, but in the process of writing, the uncompleted fragments slid to a novel. This origin partly accounts for the plenty of references to literary works in this roman. Then, what is the point of the transformation from a critique to a novel? Our hypothesis is that this transformation occurs due to the transition of Proust’s main interest—from the monological narration of the critique towards the dialogical and descriptive discourse of the novel of manners, in which characters are concerned with literature in their own way. In order to demonstrate the hypothesis, we examine various aspects of characters who talk of literature in the novel, analyzing their opinion for four most frequently referred authors, Madame de Sévigné, duke de Saint-Simon, Hugo and Balzac. This approach has enabled us to find that the characters’ opinions represent the reception of the authors in question, and that the opinions have a role of typifying and situating the characters in the plot. Therefore we can conclude that Proust chose to draw the behavior of people around literature with the form of novel instead of simply stating his own idea

Abstract:

Evangelical reformism has always been recognized as a massive influence on early nineteenth-century culture. Philanthropic pressure groups dominated public life. But while much attention has recently been devoted to the language and ideas which informed the Evangelical mindset, too many historians have accepted the heroic emphases of nineteenth-century memoirists, and have concentrated on Wilberforce and the crusade against slavery. This thesis contends that the real strength of the movement lay in business, the professions and burgeoning officialdom, and traces the clerical and business networks that connected this metropolitan nexus with provincial Britain. As is shown in chapters on the Church and Universities, patronage and politics, the City of London, the Navy and colonial affairs, this was a dynamic, highly-organized milieu in which patronage, place and influence were used to the full.

L'histoire de Sidon est revisitée à la lumière des ces émissions monétaires entre la fin de l'époque hellénistique et le haut empire romain (169/8 av. J. -C. - 235 ap. J. -C. ). La première étape passe par l'élaboration d'un corpus de ces monnaies, par une étude de coin ainsi qu'une lecture critique des exemplaires publiés. La deuxième étape consiste à soumettre le corpus à un traitement statistique visant à mettre en évidence le système monétaire, le volume de production, l'axe des coins, le système de marquage ainsi que l'aire de diffusion correspondant à chaque type de monnayage. Enfin, une troisième étape vise à confronter les données numismatiques aux sources historiques et épigraphiques. Elle permet d'aborder des questions concernant l'ère et le calendrier de cette cité, son statut et positionnement face aux différents événements politiques et militaires de la région, la configuration territoriale de ses possessions dans la Beqa' à l'époque augustéenne et l'imagerie monétaire comme reflet de l'univers re1igieux et culturel sidonien à l'époque coloniale.
