Abstract:
XX. Momento importante, no séc. Sofrimento humano.

Abstract:
Despite her hostility to surrealism, Simone Weil received a paradoxical reception in the work and thought of Georges Bataille. From this point onwards she has attracted the interest of psychoanalysis up to the present day. After their meeting and exchanges at the beginning of the 1930s, Bataille wrote a novel in which he created a portrait of Simone Weil and asks, through her, questions which served to develop and enrich the next stages of his theoretical constructions. This pathway to progress through reference to Simone Weil has often gone unnoticed. However, it deserves to be reconstituted because it brings a disturbing light that Weil would not have approved but that could help us to renew our understanding of her personality and her work.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an exercise in the retrieval of a critique of the moral language of rights. Grounded in her account of moral agency and her analysis of force, Simone Weil's critique of rights language goes beyond, although it contains, the Marxist view of rights language as ideological, as masking power relations. Weil argued not only that humans are unable to extract themselves from social and economic relations in order to appear equal on the political level, but also they are unable to extract themselves from the consequences of force. The thesis clarifies the Weilian appeal to examine in detail the consequences of force as a precondition to justice. Failure to conduct such an examination Weil views as a flight from reality, a consolation. Weil argued that facing the consequences of force is a virtue and requires the exercise of attention, a pivotal concept of her paradigm of renunciation. Weil's ethical category of affliction represents the psycho-social dimensions of extreme forms of victimization. Weil distinguished three objects of violation that compose reification: the body, self-interpretation and relatedness. The capacity to articulate, Weil argues, is impaired by practices which result in affliction. The recognition of muteness engenders understanding of the depth of violation. The impact of the muteness of the afflicted on the public sphere, discourse, and conceptions of justice is disclosed by the ethical category of affliction. The category of affliction discloses, not the absent voice but, the absence of a voice.

_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This work analyses Simone Weil’s considerations regarding the relations between the modern thought and the totalitarian movements of the beginning of the 20th century. It presents the philosopher’s proposal for the development of a new culture, inspired by the ideals developed by the classical Greek period, based on concepts of balance and harmony. Considering the European culture of the period between the two world wars as a culture of force, that emphasizes power at the expenses of humanity, Weil argues that we must review the values of modern civilization, we need the intellectuals put in the process of creating and developing social structures to promote the conditions of possibility for the broad fulfillment of the human being. Accordingly, Weil’s thought scan the human condition and finds in this process the supernatural reason, which relates man to the universe, to other men and to himself, as the necessary condition for the establishment of the principles of balance and order in the world. From these considerations, as we intend to show here, Weil concludes that the development of a new culture that opposes to the culture of force and oppression demands that natural thought be united again to the supernatural reason.

Abstract:
W3C has recently introduced SHACL as a new standard for writing integrity constraints on graph-structured data (specifically, on RDF graphs). Unfortunately, the standard defines the semantics of non-recursive constraints only, leaving the case of recursive constraints open. This has spurred recent research efforts into finding a suitable, mathematically crisp semantics for constraints with cyclic dependencies. In this paper, we argue that recursive SHACL can be naturally equipped with a semantics inspired in the well-founded semantics for recursive logic programs with default negation. This semantics is not only intuitive, but it is also computationally tractable, unlike the previous proposals. The semantics is tolerant to constraint violations that are outside the realm of the so-called validation targets, which is a feature that is highly relevant in practice. In addition to defining the well-founded semantics using a notion of unfounded sets, we draw a connection to the classic definition of the well-founded semantics in logic programming: we provide a simple (yet inefficient) translation of recursive SHACL under the well-founded semantics into propositional logic programs under the well-founded semantics. This translation also provides a basis for a highly optimized SHACL validation engine, which we also present in this paper. Our system performs graph validation by producing a optimized logic program that can be evaluated using the DLV deductive database engine. The system has pay-as-you-go behavior: for validation with non-recursive constraints, the system avoids using a deductive database and instead only uses SPARQL queries over a RDF triplestore.

Abstract:
Both Sabbatarianism and its poetic creation from this period were under the influence of Simon Péchi. Most of the poetic creations of the Sabbatarians came from the pen of Péchi, who also outlined the future direction regarding this kind of creation. The concern of the Sabbatarians was for the translation of Jewish religious hymns, as well as for their processing. And the literature which emerged, and which until now is an almost unknown poetic literature, which is not even very wide and which has come to us with many shortcomings, in one respect is unmatched and especially full of teachings as regarding that radical change, through which Sabbatarianism has passed from the moment Simon Péchi has reached to lead it.

Abstract:
Abstract Leaks through the production packer, which serves as a primary barrier can compromise well integrity. Traditional methods to restore packer integrity typically entail costly workover operations, necessitating the deployment of a rig to replace the upper completion. This paper presents a cost-effective solution utilizing thermosetting resin, offering an economically viable alternative for remediating packer leaks without the need for heavy workover rigs. The method employs gravity-feeding of thermosetting resin through the annular fluids to seal leaks located often thousands of meters deep. Resin is pumped into the annulus from the surface and descends by gravity to the packer, its cohesive nature allows it to sink through the annular fluids and settle on the packer. Some of the resin is then squeezed into the leak paths to seal the leak. The key characteristics of the thermosetting resin that facilitates gravity feeding includes its immiscibility in water-based fluids, low viscosity, adjustable density and setting time, and its ability to establish a permanent seal in an oil and gas well environment. The methodology, successfully sealing packer leaks across multiple wells, utilizes simple equipment setups. By presenting various case histories, this paper explores the design and implementation of the innovative solution in diverse wells with varying configurations and conditions. The resin operations require only simple mixing and pumping equipment that is both lightweight and has very small footprint to mix, pump and place the thermosetting resin plug. It offers significant advantages in terms of time and operational simplicity. The cases presented demonstrate how this rigless repair method to reduce operational time and costs while effectively addressing production packer leaks in the oil and gas industry. This solution not only showcases practical applications but also aligns with industry demands for economically viable and at the same time environmentally responsible and safer methods, making it a valuable contribution to the existing body of knowledge.

Abstract:
A command and control (C2) system can be defined as a group of individuals organised hierarchically in which higher-ranking individuals can issuedirections to their subordinates with a certain goal in mind. We present a model for representation of command and control networks in the Coq proof assistant based on a tree data structure. Our model utilises Coq’s implementation of data structures and includes examples of how to define functions and properties that may be relevant in a C2 system, as well as examples of some of the tests we have performed to verify the correctness and usability of our model. The examples given here are simple, but constitute basic blocks that can later be used in more realistic formalisations.

Abstract The conventional wellhead (WH) system with slip-on weld and slip-type hangers has been in the industry for several decades as it is simple and straightforward. However, the system entails and imposes certain risks and excessive time that cause unnecessary additional costs. This paper will discuss the differences between the conventional wellhead system and the Fluted Mandrel Hanger (FMH) system and the optimization opportunities that FMH system promotes. The FMH system uses a mandrel that sets once it lands on the load shoulder on the internal profile of the wellhead and has flutes that facilitates returns to the surface. To prevent damaging the internal profile, before drilling, a wear bushing must be installed due to the delicacy of the system. After drilling the hole section to casing point, a rat hole of 5 - 10 ft is maintained to ensure safe and smooth landing of the FMH. After landing, the cementing operation can be commenced and then the Pack-off can be set and tested. The FMH system has proven its efficiency and cost-effectiveness in comparison to the conventional system. To elaborate, in a dual stage cementing job, the WOC time on the first stage to lift the Well Control Equipment (WCE) is eliminated which saves rig time, leading to considerable cost savings especially in offshore rigs. Moreover, the system provides and promotes safer operations by eliminating cutting or dressing since the casing stub of the FMH is a standardized design that fits through the next casing or tubing spool. In addition, it eliminates an extra step of lifting the diverter or Blowout Preventer (BOP) to set the slip-type hanger on the casing.

Abstract:
Abstract Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) allowed us to continuously gather information behind casing, while changing the wells surface conditions. The objective of this case study is to identify the potential causes of the sustained annulus pressure using distributed optical data, integrated it with conventional well information to help define remedial action. The sensing fiber was deployed utilising fiber-enabled slickline allowing the measurement of the whole well over the duration of the survey. Conventional memory Gamma Ray, CCL, Pressure and Temperature sensors were also run on the fiber slickline. A program consisting of an initial baseline, a sequence of bleed off, shutin and production periods were used to create measurable events for the fiber to detect over a 7 hour survey period. With the integration of the information provided by the memory tools, it is possible to determine the location of the sustained pressure contribution and the fluid behavior related to the pressure and temperature changes. The combination of simple data acquisition and rapid processing at wellsite ensured data quality and enabled the option of potential remediation during the same visit to the well. This case study from South America highlights the application of this service in a remote wellsite location with sustained casing pressure issues, the authors concluded that the contribution point was located at the Rayoso Formation and the entry point was the 9 5/8" shoe. Liquid dropout effects during the production phase were confirmed with pressure indications from the memory gauge at the bottom of the fiber. DFOS enabled slickline provides information that allows potential remediation during the same well visit. This case study presents a simple deployment and interpretation methodology reducing time and costs and bringing fiber technology to a mass market. Partnering with key suppliers to simplify the process, helped to make fiber a routine part of an integrated surveillance service.

Abstract:
Abstract Cleanouts and milling make up most of the common coiled tubing (CT) operations around the globe. The objective of each is to remove debris from a wellbore, such as sand, scale, cement, or fracture plugs, to promote an unobstructed flow path for fluids. For decades, operators and service companies have focused heavily on methods to optimize removal of debris through the development of specialized tools, fluids, techniques, and predictive models. These are coupled with wellsite equipment digital acquisition systems to capture CT behavior, pump rates, and chemical additive rates; very little attention has been given to the rates of the fluid and solids being returned to surface. The composition and quality of fluids being pumped into the well are often well characterized, and the pump rate is recorded digitally to the second. By contrast, information on the fluid being returned is frequently limited to intermittent, manual surveys of the flowback tank fluid level that often go unrecorded. Fluid samples are rarely analyzed, even by inexact measurements, to provide feedback to the predictive model. This results in a missed opportunity to optimize the operation as well as to recognize and respond to undesirable trends and actions in real time. This paper describes a simple digital acquisition system developed and implemented in the field to digitally record, plot, and monitor critical wellsite parameters including flowback rate, solids returns, annular velocities, and downhole Reynolds numbers. The system provides a real-time visual aid to observe the direct impact that operational decisions have on cleanout efficiency and the opportunity to correct and optimize the cleanout operation. Furthermore, the system offers the opportunity to rapidly recognize and respond to unexpected trends such as a gradual or sudden loss in return rate or a decrease of solids returns which could rapidly result in serious consequences such as a stuck-pipe situation.

Abstract:
Abstract Manufacturers follow the Qualification of casings connections for thermal wells Protocol (ISO/TS 12835:2022(E)) to design and qualify casing threaded connections for geothermal applications. This standard considers Finite Element Analyses (FEA) to highlight the critical configurations. To better simulate connection behavior according to the ISO/TS 12835 protocol, an enhanced material law is required. This paper proposes an approach to characterize and model the material behavior of an API carbon steel (L80) for geothermal applications considering cyclic behavior, temperature dependance and stress relaxation. Simple strain driven cyclic tests at various temperatures including holding times were used to separate the cyclic hardening and the viscoplastic responses. This allowed to characterize the behavior of the material over the target range of temperatures, from 20°C to 450°C. A specific data treatment was used to properly estimate the creep strain rate as a function of the stress level allowing to formulate a creep law able to predict the stress relaxation which occurs during the holding times. Tensile tests were also performed to assess the static plasticity of the material. Yield strength (YS) derating for L80 described a reduction of YS up to 18.1% at 350°C compared to YS at room temperature. The specific strain-controlled cyclic tests have displayed stress relaxation phases during each constant strain step which emphasize a creep behavior even at low temperature but with a very significant increase between 350°C and 450°C. It also shows a progressive softening of the material (reduction of the maximum stress with the number of cycles achieved) especially at room temperature. The material test results were used to create a material law in the commercial software ABAQUS®. The impact of this enhanced material law on the response of a threaded connector to the ISO/TS 12835 protocol highlights new potential structural and functional failure modes consistent with those reported on real cases in literature.

Abstract:
This report addresses the general matter of optimisation under uncertainties, following a previous report on stochastic sensitivities (deliverable 6.2). It describes several theoretical methods, as well their application into implementable algorithms. The specific case of the conditional value at risk chosen as risk measure, with its challenges, is prominently discussed. In particular, the issue of smoothness – or lack thereof – is addressed through several possible approaches. The whole report is written in the context of high-performance computing, with concern for parallelisation and cost-efficiency.

Abstract:
Simon Anholt believes that national image is as important as productivity or innovation because: “If you want to do well, you have to do good.” This requires changing from a competition- to a cooperation-based global culture. He and Dr. Robert Govers developed the Good Country Index to measure how nations benefit their citizens as well as the planet. The index uses direct and indirect indicators of contributions to the global good, expressed relative to GDP to avoid penalizing poorer countries. Humanity’s future obviously depends on all countries cooperating in creating a better future.

Abstract:
Casing corrosion in storage wells is a matter of considerable concern to the gas storage industry. Such wells are typically flowed through the casing rather than through production tubing, to facilitate high flow capacities. When failures occur, gas leakage to surrounding formations, freshwater zones and to the surface can pose a sizable economic loss as well as a serious safety hazard. For these reasons, monitoring corrosion in down-hole casing in gas storage fields has become a major concern of many storage field operators, and the in situ detection and assessment of corrosion damage by means of logging instruments is a significant part of this effort. The study reported in this document has sought to investigate in detail the objectives, methods and results of currently available commercial logging devices as a first step in determining whether down-hole corrosion damage can be more accurately characterized by improved logging methods. Of the several methods potentially capable of meeting the through-wall measurement requirement, only two form the basis for current commercial corrosion logs: the flux leakage, or magnetic perturbation technique, and the remote field eddy current approach. In seeking to provide reasonably short term performance improvements to the industry, it was decided in this project to pursue refinements of magnetic perturbation logs for two reasons: first, the shortcomings evidenced by present logs of this type appear to be amenable to relatively simple improvement, and second, the remote field eddy current approach, while useful as an adjunct to damage assessment, offers little promise of sizing individual corrosion flaws.

Can Conservative Management of Simple Acute Appendicitis Miss a Diagnosis of Appendiceal Neoplasms? A Histological Evaluation of 686 Appendectomies of Simple Appendicitis. International Journal of Surgery, June 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.60122/j.ijs.2024.20.02.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical disease with an estimated lifetime risk of about 6-8%. Non-operative management of appendicitis is gaining popularity worldwide. Appendiceal tumors are rare and confirmed by histopathological examination in 0.5-2.5% of all appendectomies. The risk of missing an appendiceal tumor with a non-operative treatment is not well established. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of appendiceal neoplasm in patients presented with simple non-perforated appendicitis. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of all patients, that underwent an appendectomy from January 2018 to June 2020 in a single academic center. The histopathological reports were reviewed for appendiceal tumor. The patients’ and disease characteristics were recorded. Final analysis included only patients with simple acute appendicitis. Results: 686 patients that underwent an emergent appendectomy for a simple acute appendicitis, nine patients (1.41%) were found to have an appendiceal neoplasm on final pathology. The preoperative imaging study did not reveal any suspicious findings for appendiceal neoplasm. Neoplasms revealed by histopathological examination include three neuroendocrine tumor (NET), four low-grade mucinous neoplasm and two adenocarcinomas. The mean age for appendiceal NET was 25.33 ± 4.72, for mucinous neoplasm 48.75 ± 29.22 and 62 ± 12.72 for adenocarcinoma. Logistic regression demonstrated a significant difference in appendiceal diameter and white blood cell count between the neoplasm and acute appendicitis group. Conclusion: Although appendiceal neoplasm following an appendectomy for simple acute appendicitis is not common, it is a concern that need to be addressed. Despite the wide use of imaging study for the diagnosis, it does not provide diagnostic indication for the existence of an appendiceal neoplasm in our cases. The risk of an appendiceal neoplasm, albeit low, should be taken into consideration in the management of adult patients with acute appendicitis before a decision to embark on a non-operative therapy.

Abstract:
We use long-run annual cross-country data for 10 macroeconomic variables to evaluate the long-horizon forecast distributions of six forecasting models. The variables we use range from ones having little serial correlation to ones having persistence consistent with unit roots. Our forecasting models include simple time series models and frequency domain models developed in Müller and Watson (2016). For plausibly stationary variables, an AR(1) model and a frequency domain model that does not require the user to take a stand on the order of integration appear reasonably well calibrated for forecast horizons of 10 and 25 years. For plausibly non-stationary variables, a random walk model appears reasonably well calibrated for forecast horizons of 10 and 25 years. No model appears well calibrated for forecast horizons of 50 years.
