Abstract:
This paper systematically reviewed the clinical update of traditional Chinese exercises in the treatment of simple obesity in recent years and discussed their specific advantages in this aspect. This review focused on several typical traditional Chinese exercises, namely, Tai Chi, Ba Duan Jin, Yi Jin Jing, Wu Qin Xi, Shaolin Neigong, and Liu Zi Jue, which all showed clinical beneficial effect on the treatment of simple obesity with their own characteristics. To optimize the clinical therapeutic effect of these traditional Chinese exercises, we need to seek the most appropriate exercise or the combo exercise based on the characteristics of different obese population, to improve the efficiency of weight loss, reduce sports injury, and consolidate the therapeutic effect. In the future, we need to further evaluate the efficacy of sitting exercise, lying exercise, and static training in the treatment of simple obesity, subdivide the treatment population, and explore the working mechanism of these traditional Chinese exercises.

Abstract:
For practicing Tae Bo will not be sufficient to perform a number of training sessions a week, in which to sweat or burn many calories. This discipline requires, more than any other, equal participation of our psyche during training. To achieve assimilation proper technique should always think about what we do to that Tae Bo is not a contact sport but a fight - with an imaginary opponent, a battle with ourselves, to be a dispute at a highest level of technical. Tae Bo is an exercise program that combines the best of several different disciplines. A combination of martial arts, boxing, aerobics and dance exercises posted on a trained musical background, here's the secret world of this new trend in exercise. The exercise is relatively easy and convenient for anyone who wants to do maintenance but the move may be designed workouts for weight loss or development and driving qualities.

Abstract:
Background: Recent evidence has suggested that chronic physical activities including balance exercises have positive effects on cognition, but their acute effects are still unknown. In the present study, the authors tested the hypothesis that an acute bout of balance exercise would enhance cognitive performance compared with aerobic activity. Methods: A total of 20 healthy middle-aged adults completed 2 acute 30-minute balance and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise sessions on 2 counterbalanced separate occasions. To assess cognitive functions, performance tasks in executive control, perceptual speed, and simple reaction time were tested before and immediately after each exercise session. Results: Although there were no significant interactions (time × exercise condition, P > .05), the main effects of time were significant in executive control (P < .05), perceptual speed (P < .05), and simple reaction time (P < .001), showing improvements after both exercises. Conclusions: These findings highlight that both types of exercise (aerobic, more metabolic and less cognitively demanding; balance, more cognitively and less metabolically demanding) were able to positively affect simple reaction time performance, perceptual speed, and executive control independently of physiological adjustments occurring during aerobic or balance exercise.

Abstract:
Ecological field techniques such as transect surveys are long-used, integral means of immersing students in field exercises to illustrate ecological measures. Many species of crayfish create conspicuous burrows within or near aquatic habitats. Such burrows can easily be identified and measured by students during an ecological field exercise. In this article, we describe a field activity we developed as part of a college-level course in which students utilized transects and calipers to collect counts and measurements of crayfish burrows in order to evaluate their distribution and size among different substratum types along a small stream. This field exercise could be incorporated, with or without modification, into an applicable high school or introductory/intermediate college biology course as a means of illustrating ecological concepts, sampling technique, and/or behavioral biology.

Deshpande, Kedar Shriram. "Barriers, perspectives, and interventions of exercise for patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2025. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2924.

Full text
Abstract:
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease globally. Exercise is essential for MASLD management; however, many MASLD patients lack opportunities to exercise and lead active lives. This thesis project: i) evaluated exercise-related barriers and determined patient awareness of exercise's necessity for MASLD management (Study 1); ii) assessed patient attitudes toward exercise and awareness of MASLD through a qualitative analysis of interviews with MASLD patients (Study 2); iii) presented a case study of a 65-year-old female who improved her metabolic health through lifestyle changes, emphasizing exercise and diet (Study 3); and iv) evaluated liver function, metabolic indicators, and health-related quality of life in people with MASLD following an 8-week online, body-weight eccentric exercise intervention. Study 1: A survey on exercise habits, barriers to adherence, and awareness of exercise's effect on MASLD was sent to eighty-one patients at a hepatology outpatient clinic. Results indicated that 73% did not meet the exercise recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, and 54% were unaware that exercise could help with MASLD. Reported barriers included poor physical and mental well-being (57%), limited time (43%), apathy (31%), and fatigue from exercising (24%). These results point to specific barriers requiring intervention and education and suggest future exercise program settings that account for time limitations, fatigue, and attitudes toward exercise. Study 2: A thematic analysis of interviews with 18 MASLD patients revealed high awareness of the condition but low awareness of treatment via exercise. Patients expressed a preference for low-intensity, low-accessibility activities like walking, bodyweight, and resistance training. This study highlights the necessity of matching exercise options to patient preferences, ensuring feasibility for long-term adherence. Study 3: A qualitative single-patient case study assessed obstacles and facilitators to sustained lifestyle changes, demonstrating how holistic, inclusive lifestyle adjustments can impact MASLD. This intervention showed that with adequate instruction and support, the patient could make meaningful changes, reflecting how a customized approach can empower patients to manage symptoms effectively. Study 4: Sixteen participants were divided into an exercise group (n=9) and a non-exercise control group (n=7). The exercise group completed a supervised, progressive web-based body-weight eccentric exercise program for eight weeks. Participants in the exercise group showed significant improvements in hepatic steatosis severity (13.2±13.8%), waist circumference (4.4±13.5%), hip circumference (2.6±11.1%), and gamma-glutamyl transferase levels (23.9±30.0%). They also demonstrated enhanced (p < 0.05) physical fitness, including improvements in the sit-to-stand test (24.3±33.2%), 3-metre timed up and go test (-15.6±16.4%), 2-minute step test (37.5±20.5%), and single-leg balance test (25.1±37.6%). These findings suggest that home-based, web-delivered eccentric resistance exercises are an effective intervention for improving liver and metabolic health in patients with MASLD. Overall, the findings from these four studies contribute to a deeper understanding of the barriers, perspectives, and effective interventions for exercise in MASLD patients. The research underscores the need for greater awareness of exercise's role in MASLD management and the importance of addressing patient-specific barriers through tailored interventions. The novel web-based bodyweight eccentric exercise program shows significant potential for improving liver health and physical fitness in this population, addressing key obstacles like time constraints, fatigue, and accessibility. Future interventions should focus on increasing patient education and providing flexible, personalized exercise options to promote long-term adherence and better health outcomes in MASLD management.

Abstract:
A avaliação do equilíbrio dinâmico foi feita por meio do teste Timed up and go (TUG).
The practice of regular exercise in aging is helpful to bring benefits in all aspects older peoples life, especially on senescence individuals postural control that tend to reduce such capacity. The aim of this study was to verify and to analyze the changes promoted by two types of exercise programs on postural control in healthy elderly. The study design was a clinical singleblind, randomized parallel-arm. The participants were 46 older (69.5 ± 5.4 years) and were randomly divided into two exercises groups: multi-sensory (GMS) (with emphasis on general proprioceptive stimulation) and resistance (GR) (for the major muscle groups of the body). The sessions of approximately 1 hour long, occurred twice a week over 12 weeks in the fitness department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Institute (IMREA) of the Faculty of Medicine Hospital, University of Sao Paulo. The evaluation of dynamic balance was made by means of the Timed up and go (TUG). The evaluation of static balance, the force platform and one-leg-stance test support. To evaluate the functional activities dependent on the postural control, we used the battery of tests Guralnik battery and balance scale of Berg. We also held isokinetic evaluation of the ankle joint. There were no serious adverse effects. By checking the trials, only the TUG and battery of tests Guralnik present significant improvements after the intervention by the GMS, and only the improvement of the TUG was significant in relation to GR. Relate to the body sway, only GMS was significantly decreased from the displacement of center of pressure in one-leg position with eyes open in the directions: anteroposterior and lateromedial and GR showed only slowing the rate of displacement of center of pressure in this same support, but not were no differences between groups. The GR showed improvement in peak torque at 3 and GMS in 6 (of 8 muscle groups evaluated) muscle groups and only the GMS has improved the work of the dorsal and plantar flexors, but the differences between the groups were not significant. Although the results presented by the GMS have been more significant than the GR, the results of this study have revealed that only the issue of dynamic balance presented by GMS was better than the GR

Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and static stretching, in combination and as monotherapy, in people with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods: 145 people aged 50-75 years with KOA were randomly allocated to five groups (each n=29): Laseractive+Stretch, Laserplacebo+Stretch, Stretch, Laseractive and control. The laser therapy (GaAs; 904nm; 40mW; 3J/point; 27J/knee) consisted of nine sessions in the combined treatment groups and 24 when used as monotherapy. Stretching consisted of seven exercises repeated for 24 sessions. The control group received an educational booklet. Treatment frequency was 3 times/week. The primary outcome was pain intensity measured by Visual Analogue Scale and the secondary outcomes included pain, function and stiffness\' domains and total score of Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), function assessed by Lequesne, mobility by Timed Up and Go, knee range of motion (KROM) by goniometry and hamstring shortening by popliteal angle. Results: In the combined treatment groups, there was no difference between the laser active and placebo (p > 0.05). At the end of the study, the treatment groups demonstrated, on average, a significant relative gain in pain (50%), total WOMAC (39%), function (30%) and mobility (20%) when compared to control (p < .001). For the combined treatment groups there was a 43% improvement in hamstring shortening (p <.001) and 9% improvement in KROM (p=0.02) when compared to control group. Conclusion: LLLT and stretching exercises, as monotherapy, were effective in reducing pain and improving function, mobility and the domains pain and function as well as the total score of WOMAC. The LLLT in the combined groups was not superior to the placebo application. Thus, we should not discard the contribution of the placebo effect in the result of the LLLT as monotherapy. The LLLT combined with stretching did not promote additional benefits compared to stretching alone

Abstract:
AbstractWho should decide what content is permissible online? Platforms will always exercise some degree of discretion over content moderation, and ensuring that platforms exercise their discretionary powers responsibly is a large part of making governance legitimate. In this chapter, we argue that improving the self-regulation of internal governance practices of platforms is a critical component of any regulatory project. Our argument is that platforms must always have a role in regulating lawful speech and that regulating ordinary, lawful speech is critical to influencing cultures and addressing harm. We draw on the results of a qualitative study involving a broad group of participants who actively work to influence how platforms govern their users. We offer a simple proof in the moral responsibilities that platforms bear to address the pressing need for cultural change in violence against women—responsibilities that cannot fully be carried out or overseen by states or other external actors.

Abstract:
AbstractOverall Survival (OS) and late quality of life of patients with locally advanced, HPV-negative Head and Neck Squamous Cell Cancer (HNSCC) are not satisfactory. Nutritional status at the beginning of both surgical and non-surgical treatment with curative intent has been linked to OS and quality of life. Weight loss, body-mass index, functional parameters, and biochemical examinations have been associated with the risk of treatment-related adverse events, mortality, quality of life and outcome. Moreover, there is a strong need for effective preventive approaches that could be implemented after completion of curative treatment to reduce recurrences, second tumors and improve quality of life. Aerobic exercise training, which is known to stimulate the immune system, and nutritional interventions represent easy, acceptable and reproducible methods to increase immune and nutritional competence, impacting thus on the aforementioned objectives. Participating in exercise training programs has been well accepted by patients with HNSCC, underlining the feasibility of such an intervention. There are also immunological arguments to promote an adequate physical activity in HNSCC patients. Baseline and after treatment immune competence of HNSCC should be weighted, as it may impact on cancer recurrence and OS. Patients with HNSCC have significantly lower absolute numbers of CD3+, CD4+ and CD8 + T cells than normal controls, and lymphocyte counts, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) are associated with prognosis. Aerobic exercise training prevents immune senescence, and therefore may prevent cancer development. The immune system activity is accompanied by an increased rate of metabolism, requiring energy sources, substrates for biosynthesis and regulatory molecules, which are ultimately derived from the diet. Hence, an adequate supply of a wide range of nutrients is essential to support the immune system to function optimally. Therefore, a regular nutritional counselling combined with personalized exercise training is a simple and very cheap way that could improve patient’s nutritional condition and immunological function, and ultimately impact on survival and quality of life. There is a strong need for well conducted clinical trials aimed at evaluating, in homogeneous groups of HNSCC patients, the impact of nutritional interventions (also comprising immunonutrition) and physical exercise. The evaluation of surrogate endpoints like circulating immune cells should also be explored to identify feasible and effective interventions. Integrating these interventions within immunotherapy approaches represents another area deserving further studies.

Abstract:
A series of laboratory exercises has been developed to aid in the teaching of thermal and fluid sciences to undergraduate engineers. The exercises use simple hardware and a guided-inquiry approach to expose student misconceptions and to develop deeper understanding of basic concepts. This paper focuses on one of the laboratory exercises, which uses a simple duct with a sudden expansion to demonstrate the error caused by misapplication of the Bernoulli equation. The apparatus and the laboratory exercise are described. Learning gain measurements and results of attitude surveys are presented. The exercise is successful in causing students to confront their misconceptions and lack of understanding. Student attitudes about the usefulness of the exercise correlate with their grade in the course. The A students have a less favorable opinion than the B and C students.

Abstract:
An application of a simple and effective learning control scheme to a robotic arm for exercise is presented. During exercises, the force applied by a user to an exercise machine varies for different users and for different workouts of the same user. Learning control is used to compensate for the difference between the actual force and the planned force. It is shown through simulation that the learning control method decrease tracking error quickly for both time-invariant and time-varying forcing functions.

Abstract:
Despite great advances in computations, industry still relies on empirical based one dimensional design in turbomachinery. In colleges and universities that offer turbomachinery education, even the one dimensional design becomes a very complex exercise unless the procedure is programmed. Due to lengthy calculations and iterations, simple solutions are not possible. Design exercises have therefore been limited in the classroom. But recent advances in powerful spreadsheets have opened a simple and fast way of performing turbomachinery design. This paper describes a typical current compressor design challenge in industry and how a student deals with the design and analysis using a spreadsheet.

Abstract:
Over the last two decades, technology has evolved fast causing mass evolution in every aspect of life, among which health care domain and human-machine interaction. However, the benefits of the technology progress were limited for its elderly users, since the traditional human-machine interfaces were always a barrier between them and any new devices. Compared to those interfaces, multimodal interfaces offer a more natural way of interaction with the machines, coping with some inherent difficulties of elderly people. The paper presents a system dedicated to assist people with special needs, such as elderly people or people recovering from specific diseases, to perform rehabilitation exercises by using a multimodal interface. The system presents to the user a set of required exercises prescribed by the doctor or by the caregiver, and tracks the user exercise evolution, informs the user about his/her performances and mistakes, changes exercise levels depending on the users' physical condition and results. Furthermore, the system gives advice to its user to optimize the results of the exercise. To be easily accessible by elderly people, the interface is a key-factor of the system. The supervision of exercises is achieved by means of a Kinect camera, successive images of user's exercises being analyzed automatically. The feed-back to the user is given either by messages displayed on the screen or through voice output. The user is represented on the screen by an avatar, which is mirroring the user's movements during the exercise. The user can interact with the system by giving simple voice commands or by using the touch facilities of the screen. In this way, it allows the user to interact with the system without interrupting his exercise and in the most natural possible way. The interface can be adapted to user preferences by configuring the type and color of fonts, the arrangement of icons on the screen and the aspect of the display. After repeated interactions with the system, the icons corresponding to the most used commands given, either by touch or by voice, will become bigger on the screen or better placed. We claim that our proposed approach will help the elderly to perform their rehabilitation exercise in their preferred medium with a grade of independence and to improve the efficiency of the exercise and well-being.

Abstract:
Paper deals with an actual development of the educational applications that aims mainly to the connection of educational activities at the universities through usage of modern technologies, iPad touchscreen tablets in particular. iPad tablets present innovative technological element and effective educational tool of direct and indirect education, allowing students to use a virtual environment that provides information in digital and multimedia form. Furthermore, tablets offer a possibility of real interaction through various animations, videos, references and other interactive elements, so they directly strengthen active knowledge acquisition and development of skills and abilities. Authors of the paper present development of a compact selection of specialized educational applications focused on the partial syntactic areas - simple sentence and hierarchical sentence structure diagram, compound and complex sentence, exercise for compound sentence analysis and its graphic description, valence syntax and exercise for grammatical sentence structure, semantic statement construction and exercise for semantic and complex sentence structure. Development activities react to the fact that partial syntax areas offer possibilities to its transition to the form of specialized educational applications focused on theoretical and practical subject matter. Nature of syntax and its core, which is based in the mastering of the complicated structure of simple and compound sentence and its graphic description, implicates possibilities for education that is based on the graphic, interaction and communication educational environment. Moreover, paper deals with the possibilities of implementation of modern technologies and innovative software in a form of applications to the direct education within the seminars. Paper also concerns its possible usage within the framework of elementary, secondary and special education. Authors? main objective is to warn of the new possibilities of virtual study environment that presents effective educational tool for exercise of complex syntactic simple and compound sentence analysis.

Grieco, Kevin. Can Rural Property Tax Generate Revenue? A Simple Accounting Exercise in Sierra Leone. Institute of Development Studies, April 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2024.010.

Full text
Abstract:
How should governments in sub-Saharan Africa boost their own-source revenue? In this research note I explore the decision of policymakers to expand property taxation into rural areas in the context of developing countries. A policymaker weighing the costs and benefits of rural taxation must first consider the potential net revenue that can be extracted from rural areas. Ultimately, this is an empirical question that requires reliable data on the costs and potential revenue associated with rural taxation. Unfortunately, little such reliable data exists. In this project, I seek to fill this gap by measuring village-level costs and potential revenue associated with property taxation in Kono District in rural Sierra Leone. Based on a set of simulations, I find that property tax in poor, sparsely-populated rural areas can generate positive net revenue. While these gains are modest, they can provide a meaningful source of local government revenue in a context where incomes are near the bottom of the global distribution, and where there are potentially large returns to government spending. These simulations also highlight several features of rural tax collection. First, to increase net revenue, policymakers should prioritise increasing compliance over reducing collection costs. Second, I show that much of the revenue generated from rural taxation is likely to come from a small subset of the total villages. Third, I highlight several trade-offs between salary-based and pay-for-performance (PFP) models of tax collector compensation. I conclude by situating these results in policymakers’ broader calculus for taxing rural areas.

Abstract:
In this paper, we analyze the competition in the Colombian banking sector using bank-level monthly balance sheet information. We estimate the changes in measures of market power due to the exogenous introduction of a liquidity regulation. Our results suggest that introducing a net stable funding ratio increased the Lerner index in the short term, thus signaling a higher exercise of market power. We rationalize these changes in a simple theoretical model that allows us to analyze the tightening of liquidity requirements for banks. Our empirical results are consistent with banks with higher market power in the loan market than in the deposit market.

Abstract:
Liberalizing measures have been outnumbering by far the introduction of greater restrictions. However, the reports are silent on how liberal the policy regimes of individual countries really are and how they have been changing over time. This paper tackles this issue. The authors propose an ordinal index of the degree of openness of foreign direct investment (FDI) regimes, which they measure for 111 countries, both developed, developing, and in transition. They show the evolution of the index between 1990, 1996, and 2002 in three developing regions (Africa, Asia and Latin America), in transition economies, and in developed countries. The paper also includes a presentation of the result of a simple econometric exercise that attempts to explain the variation across countries and time periods of FDI inflows in 1990, 1996, and 2002 using five explanatory variables. Finally the authors explore the factors that explain the probability that a country will resort to restrictions on FDI.

Abstract:
Manufacturing in Latin America and the Caribbean region (LAC) faces severe competitive stresses as it integrates into the global economy. It is not, on the whole, coping well. Though it was the first region in the developing world - in the post-war era - to liberalize on international trade and investment flows and had the most advanced industrial base, it failed to tap fully the opportunities offered. As a result, it has steadily fallen behind the most competitive economies in the developing world, the Tigers of East Asia. What is behind LAC¿s under-performance? The dominant view in the region puts emphasis on the legacy of import substitution, macroeconomic mismanagement and on a costly "business environment". Although important, these factors do not seem to tell the whole story. The heavy emphasis on "government failures" has led policymakers to overlook key market failures that stand on the way to sustained productivity growth, increasing technological capability and greater competitiveness. This paper can be seen as a first step to redress the balance of the policy debate and focus on benchmarking competitive performance and capabilities in the 1990s in LAC and East Asia, letting the comparisons speak for themselves. While it is known in the region that its recent industrial record has been poor, the dimensions are not well analyzed or understood. This benchmarking exercise, using a simple framework to measure performance and capabilities, should prove instructive to policy analysis.

Abstract:
This guide was created as a response to the needs of the English phonetics and phonology class of the undergraduate Teaching Program of the Faculty of Education at Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, where the English language is approached in a more technical, professional, and theoretical way that implicitly leads to an active and meaningful practice in the classroom with simple exercises but challenging enough for the initial level of the students. The guide gives priority to the vowel sounds of English since they are different from those in the Students’ Spanish linguistic inventory, thus, each of the short and long sounds are explained with clear examples. Finally, the guide comes with a QR code that can be easily scanned from any mobile device to access the audios of the proposed exercises to be studied in class or independently by students.
