Abstract:
Wireless sensors are small-scale mobile devices that can programmatically measure physical quantities, perform simple computations, store, receive, and transmit data. The lattice built by a set of cooperating sensors is called a sensor network. Since sensor networks provide a powerful infrastructure for large-scale monitoring applications, an important issue is the network design to achieve an optimal placement of the sensors to allow (1) energy-efficient monitoring and (2) gathering meaningful data. This chapter presents a novel approach to optimize sensing node placement (e.g., for new to-be-deployed networks) and efficiently acquire data from existing sensor networks. A historical data analysis task is performed to discover spatial and temporal correlations and identify sets of correlated sensors. Then, an algorithm based on a cost function considering both distance and communication cost selects the candidate sensors, leading to the optimized network design and acquisition. Candidate sensors can then be deployed and/or queried instead of the whole network, thus reducing the network cost and extending its lifetime in terms of energy consumption. Experiments, performed on a real wireless sensor network, demonstrate the adaptability and the effectiveness of the proposed approach in optimizing the sensor network design and the data acquisition.

Abstract:
GPUs deliver higher performance than traditional processors, offering remarkable energy efficiency, and are quickly becoming very popular processors for HPC applications. Still, writing efficient and scalable programs for GPUs is not an easy task as codes must adapt to increasingly parallel architecture features. In this chapter, the authors describe in full detail design and implementation strategies for lattice Boltzmann (LB) codes able to meet these goals. Most of the discussion uses a state-of-the art thermal lattice Boltzmann method in 2D, but all lessons learned in this particular case can be immediately extended to most LB and other scientific applications. The authors describe the structure of the code, discussing in detail several key design choices that were guided by theoretical models of performance and experimental benchmarks, having in mind both single-GPU codes and massively parallel implementations on commodity clusters of GPUs. The authors then present and analyze performances on several recent GPU architectures, including data on energy optimization.

The first product of the project presented here was a prototype of video games, named IKeWYSE, which constituted the data collection tool for the experimental research project. The videogame prototype realized requires the user to navigate in a three-dimensional space through an avatar. User deals with three different tasks, two of which are designed to measure the skills of perspective taking, while the third task is calibrated on the ability of mental rotation. The default point of view is a semi-subjective view with the camera following the avatar. The player has the option to select other views, going through semi-subjective, subjective and objective point of view. The game was tested between January and March 2015, with a group of 70 children, 35 males and 35 females, from the third, fourth and fifth primary school class and from a first secondary school class of the Istituto Comprensivo San Valentino Torio, in the province of Salerno. Each user performs 10 attempts for each task. The software records the beginning of each game, the user data (age and gender), and, during the game, time for each attempt and the result (success / failure) of the attempt. The present chapter presents the research design, the path for design and development of the videogame, the methods for data collection and discusses the results obtained.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most important design strategies for increasing the speed and/or efficiency of marine vehicles is that of weight reduction. This can be achieved by optimising structural design via judicious distribution of the most apt materials and via the application of innovative lightweight structures. Sandwich structures are ideal candidates for structural lightening since they provide excellent mechanical properties at low densities, and a wide range of properties via intelligent selection of face-sheet and core materials, and configurations. Further, sandwich structures selection for marine vehicles needs to consider manufacturing feasibility for large structures, sustainability issues and materials compatibility with the aggressive marine environment. As a possible alternative to the ubiquitous glass reinforced plastic (GRP) fibre composite sandwich materials used for marine vehicles, all-aluminium sandwich structures have several attractive properties such as light weight, high mechanical properties, sustainability, and corrosion resistance. Common architectures for metallic cores include: honeycomb, foam, corrugated and lattice. This work aims to evaluate the effectiveness of aluminium honeycomb sandwich structures in marine applications by providing a comparison with other lightweight solutions. Bending stiffness was used as the criterion to select honeycomb sandwich panels allowing valid comparisons with typical marine GFRP sandwich panels. A case study based on a possible replacement of a GFRP ship balcony with an equivalent aluminium honeycomb sandwich structure was introduced. The proposed balcony was analysed with a simplified numerical model, which gives useful information for the design of the proposed structure and the experimental set up of full scale tests. The acquired information can be applied to support the design of lightweight honeycomb sandwich panels to be used for balconies, decks, floors, ceilings and other structural elements of marine vehicles.

Abstract Enhancements in manufacturing technologies, especially 3D-printing, have enabled the production of intricate micro-scale, elastic meta-structures. This study explores the broadband vibration absorption characteristics of these structures for three different geometries: simple-cubic periodic geometries as well as the more-involved diamond and octet-truss micro-lattice geometries. Broadband absorption is experimentally achieved for the basic cubic geometries with band gaps approximately 3000 Hz in width. A band gap of 3500 Hz is found in the octet-truss lattice with a 5% mass increase.
