Abstract:
This paper describes a previously unknown mikiri well in the Simpson dune field. This site was abandoned about 500-600 years ago and does not feature in ethnographic records for this region. We argue that its abandonment was most likely due to failure of the well caused by a fall in the local watertable. The Simpson Desert is one of the major sand-ridge deserts of the world, but current views of the chronology of human use of this vast dune field rest on only a handful of radiocarbon ages (n=12). The radiocarbon ages for this mikiri, and its surroundings, add to this limited dataset. We plot all available radiocarbon ages from archaeological sites in the dune field showing that occupation of this mikiri coincided with a widespread increase in use of the dune field during the last millennium, at about the time the Wangkanguru people in the dune field were becoming linguistically distinct from the Arabana to the west.

Abstract:
Object In 1957, Simpson published a seminal paper defining the risk factors for recurrence following surgical treatment of intracranial meningiomas. Given that Simpson's study was published more than 50 years ago, preceding image guidance technology and MR imaging, the authors reviewed their own experience with surgical treatment of Grade I meningiomas to determine if Simpson's grading scale is still relevant to modern neurosurgical practice. Methods From this cohort, the authors evaluated all patients undergoing craniotomy for resection of a histologically proven WHO Grade I meningioma as their initial therapy. Clinical information was retrospectively reconstructed using patient medical records and radiological data. Recurrence analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results The 5-year recurrence/progression-free survival for all patients receiving a Simpson Grade I, II, III, or IV resection was 95, 85, 88, and 81%, respectively (p = not significant, log-rank test). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed no significant difference in recurrence-free survival between patients receiving a Simpson Grade I, II, III, or IV resection. Analysis limited to meningiomas arising from the skull base (excluding the cavernous sinus) similarly found no significant benefit to Simpson Grade I or II resection, and the survival curves were nearly superimposed. Conclusions In this study of a cohort of patients undergoing surgery for WHO Grade I meningiomas, the authors demonstrate that the benefit of more aggressive attempts to resect the tumor with dura and underlying bone was negligible compared with simply removing the entire tumor, or even leaving small amounts of tumor attached to critical structures. The authors believe that these data reflect an evolution in the nature of meningioma surgery over the past 2 decades, and bring into question the relevance of using Simpson's grading system as the sole predictor of recurrence.

Grey prediction models have been widely used in various fields of society due to their high prediction accuracy; accordingly, there exists a vast majority of grey models for equidistant sequences; however, limited research is focusing on nonequidistant sequence. The development of nonequidistant grey prediction models is very slow due to their complex modeling mechanism. In order to further expand the grey system theory, a new nonequidistant grey prediction model is established in this paper. To further improve the prediction accuracy of the NEGM (1, 1, t2) model, the background values of the improved nonequidistant grey model are optimized based on Simpson formula, which is abbreviated as INEGM (1, 1, t2). Meanwhile, to verify the validity of the proposed model, this model is applied in two real-world cases in comparison with three other benchmark models, and the modeling results are evaluated through several commonly used indicators. The results of two cases show that the INEGM (1, 1, t2) model has the best prediction performance among these competitive models.

Eastern North America and temperate eastern Asia reportedly share a relatively high number of taxa of macrofungi (mushrooms and relatives), including a number of taxa that have putative eastern North America – temperate eastern Asia disjunct distributions. These reports have been used to imply an affinity between the mycota (fungal equivalent of flora and fauna) of the two regions. To date, however, this affinity has not been examined in detail. A comparison of north temperate macrofungal mycotas was undertaken to examine the similarity between these regions. We used two methods in this study: (i) direct comparison of taxon lists and (ii) calculation of the Simpson Coefficient of similarity from lists of selected taxa. These analyses were based on field work, herbarium records, and published taxonomic treatments for Amanita, Lactarius, Ramaria, and Boletaceae. Results of these analyses document that taxonomic similarity between eastern North America and temperate eastern Asia mycotas can be quite high. In all cases, the calculated similarity values for eastern North America – temperate eastern Asia comparisons are higher than those between either region of North America and Europe or between western North America and eastern Asia. Furthermore, the eastern North American and temperate eastern Asian disjunct distributions of macrofungi are usually limited to the level of species or lower. Abstract OBJECTIVE Meningiomas arising from the falcotentorial junction are relatively rare, and the description of the surgical nuances in approaching these tumors is limited. We describe our surgical management of these lesions in detail. METHODS From 2001 to 2005, 9 patients underwent operation for meningiomas arising from the falcotentorial junction, with some extending to and/or invading the torcula. All patients were assessed preoperatively with magnetic resonance neuroimaging and cerebral angiography. Furthermore, preoperative embolization was attempted in all cases. A supratentorial/infratentorial torcular craniotomy technique was used in all but 1 of these cases. RESULTS The average dimensions of the falcotentorial meningiomas were 5.1 × 4.4 × 4.2 cm. The angiograms revealed that these tumors were fed by branches of the internal carotid artery, choroidal arteries, branches of the meningohypophyseal trunk, and branches of the posterior cerebral artery. Preoperative embolization was achieved in only 2 patients. Five patients had gross total resection (Simpson grade 1), and 4 had subtotal resection (Simpson grade 4). Two of the tumors (22%) recurred during a mean follow-up period of 49 months (range, 17–88 months). The most common complication after surgery was cortical blindness, but all postoperative visual deficits had fully recovered at the last follow-up evaluation within several months. CONCLUSION An excellent outcome can be expected with detailed preoperative neuroimaging and knowledge of the nuances of the surgical technique that we describe in detail in this article.

Urban abandoned lands play an important role to maintain urban biodiversity. In order to study the characteristics of soil seed bank (SSB) in Houtai Wetland, field survey and laboratory experiment were conducted. After germination test, the results show that the species richness is relatively low, only 12 kinds of species are contained, but the reserves of SSB are abundant. Its density reaches to7.27×105grains/m2, maintaining the same level with coastal wetlands. Glycine soja account for the vast majority of proportion, leading to uneven distribution within species.So the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index, Simpson Index and Pielou Evenness Index are all lower than ground vegetation.The Sorensen Similarity Index is 0.330, its ability to reproduce ground plants is limited. The suggestions are that appropriate manners should be taken to protect native plants and soil seed bank.

The error function can be calculated based on the Simpson method through a subroutine program. An integration program by FORTRAN language was made for diffusion equations of extended source with infinite extent and limited extent. The distribution curves of alloying elements could be driven from calculated results written in ASCII code. The results on some alloying elements such as C, Co, Cr, Mn, Mo, Ni and V’s diffusion in iron, showed the diffusion distance for Ni and Mo can only be 1~3 μm and more distance for Co at common sintering temperature of 1120°C. Increasing the sintering temperature up to 1300°C, distribution curve could be improved. To refine the particle size of the added elements down to a scale of micrometers is an effective way to get homogeneous distribution.

Ketones are emitted directly to the atmosphere, and their sources were discussed in detail in chapter I. In the U.K. acetone and butanone comprise about 7% and 5%, respectively, of the total anthropogenic emissions of oxygenated compounds, and 1.6% and 1.1%, respectively, of the total anthropogenic emissions of nonmethane volatile organic compounds. Ketone emissions from solvents (both industrial and personal) are substantial; emissions from both gasoline- and diesel-fueled vehicles also contribute. Ketones are also formed extensively in the atmosphere in the oxidation of other compounds. Acetone, for example is formed in the OH-initiated oxidation of propane, iso-butane, iso-pentane, and neopentane and from a number of higher hydrocarbons. It is also formed in the oxidation of terpenes. The distribution, sources, and sinks of acetone in the atmosphere have been analyzed by Simpson et al. (1994). Methyl vinyl ketone is an important first generation product in the OH-initiated oxidation of isoprene. In this chapter, we discuss the rate coefficients and the mechanisms of oxidation of ketones. The classes covered include alkanones, hydroxyketones, diketones, unsaturated ketones, ketenes, cyclic ketones, ketones derived from biogenic compounds, and halogen-substituted ketones. Photolysis is a major atmospheric process for many ketones, and will be discussed in chapter IX. The major bimolecular reactions removing ketones from the atmosphere are with OH. Although less important than the OH reactions, reactions with Cl have been studied quite extensively. Other than for unsaturated ketones, reactions with NO3 and O3 are unimportant in tropospheric chemistry and have been studied little. The carbonyl group deactivates the α-position with respect to reaction with OH, but activates the β-position, and possibly more distant sites as well. The net result is that the overall rate coefficient of an alkanone generally exceeds that of the equivalent alkane. The temperature dependences of the rate coefficients can be quite complex, with acetone and possibly butanone showing a minimum in the rate coefficient at ∼250 K, while the higher alkanones show negative temperature dependences across the more limited temperature ranges that have been investigated. The most likely explanation of this behavior is the formation of a pre-reaction, hydrogen-bonded complex.

Information communications technology (ICT) has been identified as a key enabler in the achievement of regional and rural success, particularly in terms of economic and business development. The potential of achieving equity of service through improved communications infrastructure and enhanced access to government, health, education, and other services has been identified. ICT has also been linked to the aspiration of community empowerment, where dimensions include revitalizing a sense of community, building regional capacity, enhancing democracy, and increasing social capital. In Australia, there has been a vision for online services to be used to open up regional communities to the rest of the world. Government support has been seen “as enhancing the competence levels of local economies and communities so they become strong enough to deal equitably in an increasingly open marketplace” (McGrath & More, 2002, p. 40). In a regional and rural context, the availability of practical assistance is often limited. Identification of the most appropriate online services for a particular community is sometimes difficult (Ashford, 1999; Papandrea & Wade, 2000; Pattulock & Albury Wodonga Area Consultative Committee, 2000). Calls, however, continue for regional communities to join the globalized, online world. These are supported by the view that success today is based less and less on natural resource wealth, labor costs, and relative exchange rates, and more and more on individual knowledge, skills, and innovation. But how can regional communities “grab their share of this wealth” and use it to strengthen local communities (Simpson 1999, p. 6)? Should communities be moving, as Porter (2001, p. 18) recommends (for business), away from the rhetoric about “Internet industries,” “e-business strategies,” and the “new economy,” to see the Internet as “an enabling technology—a powerful set of tools that can be used, wisely or unwisely, in almost any industry and as part of almost any strategy?” Recent Australian literature (particularly government literature) does indeed demonstrate somewhat of a shift in terms of the expectations of ICT and e-commerce (National Office for the Information Economy, 2001; Multimedia Victoria, 2002; National Office for the Information Economy, 2002). Consistent with reflections on international industry experience, there is now a greater emphasis on identifying locally appropriate initiatives, exploring opportunities for improving existing communication and service quality, and for using the Internet and ICT to support more efficient community processes and relationships (Hunter, 1999; Municipal Association of Victoria and ETC Electronic Trading Concepts Pty Ltd., 2000; National Office for the Information Economy, 2002). The objective of this article is to explore whether welldeveloped and well-implemented online services can make a positive contribution to the future of regional and rural communities. This will be achieved by disseminating some of the learning from the implementation of the MainStreet Regional Portal project (www.mainstreet.net.au). To provide a context for this case study, the next section introduces some theory relevant to virtual communities and portals. The concept of online communities is introduced and then literature is reviewed to identify factors that have been acknowledged as important in the success of online community and portal initiatives.

Abstract:
Modeling two-phase flow across orifices is critical in optimizing orifice design and fluid’s operation in countless architectures and machineries. While flow across different orifice geometries has been extensively studied for air-water flow, simulations and experiments on other two-phase flow combinations are limited. Since every fluid mixture has its own physical properties, such as densities, viscosities and surface tensions, the effect of these properties on the local pressure drops across the orifices may differ. This study aims to investigate the effect of different fluid combinations on the pressure drop across sharp-edged orifices with varying gas mass fractions, orifice thicknesses, and area ratios. A numerical model was developed and validated using experimental data for air-water flow. Then, the model was extended to include various gas-liquid flows including gasoil, argon-diesel and fuel oil. The local pressure drops were then estimated and compared with the existing empirical correlations. The developed model presents a unified approach to measure pressure drop across orifices for different fluid mixtures with different geometries and gas-liquid compositions, unlike existing empirical correlations which are applicable for specific orifice geometries. The results showed that Morris correlation, Simpson correlation, and Chisholm correlation are more appropriate for gasoil, argon-diesel and fuel oil mixtures, respectively. They also yielded that for all fluid combinations, increasing orifice thickness and area ratio led to a decrease in local pressure drop, while increasing gas mass fraction led to an increase in local pressure drop. This revealed that, despite having similar responses to changes in orifice geometries and gas fractions, unlike the assumption made by previous works on air-water flow, no empirical correlation is able to predict pressure drops for all flow mixtures, while the presented numerical model can efficiently determine the local pressure drop for all combinations of flow mixtures, orifice geometries and gas mass fractions.
