Shannon's entropy and Simpson's index are the most used measures of species diversity. As the Simpson index proves to be just an approximation of the Shannon entropy, conditional Simpson indices of diversity and a global measure of interdependence among species are introduced, similar to those used in the corresponding entropic formalism from information theory. Also, since both the Shannon entropy and the Simpson index depend only on the number and relative abundance of the respective species in a given ecosystem, the paper generalizes these indices of diversity to the case when a numerical w

The weights may reflect the ecological importance, rarity, or economic value of the species from a given habitat. The weighted measures, being concave functions, may be used in the additive partition of diversity. Moreover, an appreciation of the prevalence and importance of salmonid diversity is reflected in the emphasis placed on protection and management at subspecific levels (Waples 1991a; Ford 2003-this volume). However, diversity without pattern can give the impression of chaotic evolution. The aim of this chapter is therefore to interpret the great diversity of salmonids in the context of the evolutionary patterns and processes through whic

Natural selection has the strongest empirical support, because rapid speciation is best documented in adaptive radiations: the more or less simultaneous divergence of numerous lines from a common ancestor to exploit new adaptive zones (Simpson 1953, p.223; Schluter 1998). Artificial selection experiments, mimicking natural selection, often produce reproductive isolation as a correlated response (Rice and Hostert 1993). In the past, the fossil record has been our only source of information into evolutionary patterns, but fossil data are now being supplemented in an unexpected way: it is coming to be understood that phylogenies constructed from molecular data, of which we have an ever increasing, high-quality supply, also provide information about the evolutionary past. Abstract:
The species diversity indices, namely the Shannon Index (H), Reciprocal Simpson’s Index (1/D), Fisher’s Alpha Diversity Index (A), and Pielou’s Evenness Index (J), were calculated for both the protected Vlasina Reservoir and the unprotected Gruža Reservoir. A total of 15 fish species were identified in the Vlasina Reservoir during the investigation period from 2003 to 2022, while the Gruža Reservoir revealed 10 fish species within the period from 2013 to 2021. The obtained values of the H, 1/D, and A indices, were not considerably high, sometimes even lower than expected, showing a slight incr

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate vegetation composition in hardwood and conifers Plantation in 220 ha of Pinus taeda and alder and poplar hardwood plantation and its comparison with natural forests in Bibiyanlu protected forest park at Astara. A total of 60 sampling plots of 1000 m2 by randomly-systematic method using 150 × 150 m grid in plantation and 200 × 200 m in natural forest was implemented. Rosaceae and Aspidiaceae family had the highest species richness in the study area, respectively. The results of the classification of life forms based on Rankayer method showed that Hemicry

Abstract:
The present study examines the relationships between structure (floristic composition, dendrometric parameters), diversity (diversity and evenness indexes) of urban forest park stands and the ecological (soil fertility, soil moisture), environmental factors (air pollution). The study is based on the forest park stands inventory data, performed from 2012 to 2017 in Kryvyi Rih City, Central Ukraine. The floristic compositions of the urban forest park stands are poor. There are only 23 species that belong to 14 families and 12 genera. More families were represented by at least more than 2% of tax
