Abstract:
Nowadays television has become concurrent in people‘s life and its role is constantly changing, so the influence of television should be taken into consideration. It is heard that modern animation is not proper for children, however they spend quite a lot of time in front of TV watching some cartoons. American animated serial „The Simpsons“ has attained special attention. Despite the fact that the film is for adults children also watch it with pleasure. Theoretical paradigms, that have been currently developing, are analyzing the changing role of television. A great attention is paid to the content of postmodern television and its‘ relations with the audience. Studying television in postmodern context is one of techniques to analize the changes of television. The aim of this paper is to reveal satire of modern society‘s values in „The Simpsons“ serial. In order to achieve the aim of the paper, the main dominant opinions about the mass media are analysed. Moreover, typical postmodern features of modern television are presented. In addition to this, the main characters are described and the prevailing ethical moral problems are revealed. Animated serial „The Simpsons“ is described as a prime postmodern work, that is characterized by a complex content, self-perception, fragmentation, satire, allusion, intertextuality, parody and imitation. „The Simpsons“ ventilates different topicality of the society. Moreover, in „The Simpsons“ sore points are raised and modern values... [to full text]

Summary in English.
Bibliography: p. [181]-195.
Contemporary life is distinguished by a massive capacity for exchanging information. Increasingly comprehensive, global communication networks allow discrete realities to be linked. These prolific sources of representation generate a "membrane" of mediation, and a formal regime of fragmentation, depthlessness and allusiveness (Chambers, 11). These economic, epistemological and aesthetic conditions constitute postmodernism. This dissertation addresses the theoretical challenge of form by attempting to craft an approach commensurate to such semiotic density (Wollen, 65). Since formalist approaches have been criticised as ahistorical, attention is given to the concept's social dimensions hence the history and production context of communication technology is considered. The inquiry also acknowledges the specificities of its location. The matrix of unfamiliar allusions which characterises the South African experience of American texts, embodies the multi-tiered allusiveness of postmodernist texts. It also illustrates the cult precept that quotation can be appreciated even when its source is not recognized. Cult theorises viewership as active yet ambivalent (Eco, 1988, 454). The initial chapter delineates parameters in postmodernism, narrative, genre and cult theory. Subsequent chapters examine three postmodernist television series: Moonlighting, a detective series, Twin Peaks, a soap opera, and The Simpsons, an animated sitcom. Deploying parody, self-reflexivity and intertextuality, each has a complex relation with genre. Tony Bennett conceives of the latter as zones of sociality which constitute and are constituted by other zones (105). Changes in genre therefore articulate changes in modes of thinking and inscribe different reading strategies.

Abstract:
Satire is a form of humor used to criticize society and ridicule those who govern through irony, exaggeration and humor. What separates satire from other forms of social and political protest is that it uses humor to change human behavior. With our study, we ask ourselves if satire can be used to spread information and knowledge via animated entertainment shows such as The Simpsons.   Our main research question is: Can the audiences of The Simpsons understand messages within the show’s entertainment context through its use of satire? To help us answer this we also have secondary inquiries such as: Is the satire within The Simpsons comprehended by its audiences? And, Is animation an appropriate method to engage information at hand?   The main purpose of this study is that we are curious if you can more easily become aware of new information and serious matters through the combined use of humor and entertainment. We have chosen The Simpsons to focus on because they were the show that started a new genre of animated satirical comedy on TV. This genre is in today's television society very popular and as a result has created new satirical hit shows as Family Guy and South Park. Moreover we also reasoned that it is possible to make use of an American TV series in a Swedish study, since the world is now very connected, so influences and products move between land borders with relative ease, such as between the U.S.A and Sweden.   We have based our theoretical framework around different types of genres that together with satire can help form an idea regarding if The Simpsons uses its perceived satire to possibly spread information and knowledge. As a use of method we have in this study chosen focus group interviews.  The groups are to view a selected episode of The Simpsons, and then discuss aspects of the program. Using these focus groups, we want to distinguish The Simpsons use of satire and if it is effective in spreading information and knowledge.   With our research, we concluded that there are different views on the use of animation to spread knowledge and information. One side argues the fact that the animated form is effective since restrictions are few. There are some who claim that animation can result in diluting the impact of satire. Participants in the focus groups clearly saw the episode 's message and theme and many of the satirical references. Ultimately the use of satirical humor to spread knowledge and information can to some degree be claimed to be an effective way to reach out to the audience with messages and opinions.

This work aims to evaluate the underlying values in the working up of the comicality and the expressional resources employed in the Simpsons cartoon meaning creation. Assuming that in the persuasive discourse the rhetoric mechanisms are gathered for the meaning effect creation, we evaluated how such mechanisms are employed and how the comical effect is created based on the theories of the laughabla and of the enunciation.

Abstract:
This essay analyses the animated series The Simpsons as a cartoon sitcom, for both mature and young audience. The show The Simpsons was chosen because it is the longest prime-time comedy show on television, and has instigated the return of prime-time animation to television. Through The Simpsons, shape, creation, production its studied and the way the content in the episodes are well developed, reaching discussion points of view and debating issues about contemporary society throughout the satire and irony, exploiting the many possibilities of the series narrative structure. It is considered the most critical TV show nowadays. This essay delineates a development overview of the series showing the context, which the cartoon content develops by the analysis of episodes. It also creates meta-texts to make critics about the popular culture and the own animated series. It also makes several references to movies and other works, creating a new and original production. A study about this animated series is indispensable to a country, as Brazil, in which this industry sector points new ways for its development in the 21st century and its reaching its own space on the TV, whatever nationally or internationally broadcasted, like The Simpsons conquered on 1989.

This study is to show the importance of the cartoon The Simpsons, produced in the early eighties by the cartoonist Matt Grening. The study shows the contemporary facts and transformations of a cartoon produced and broadcast for twenty years without interruptions. In this context, the cartoon reveals global aspects, talking about subjects such as family, work, consumption, education, and religion all appropriated to the countries where The Simpsons are broadcast, by processes of linguistic and cultural translation. It also addresses internal North-American issues such as the weapons culture, and the idea of democracy and freedom

Abstract:
Now is a complicated time to be an educator. There are many facets underlying the issues that we face within our schools these days. Although we cannot tackle these challenges all at once, we can take small steps, one school, one class, and one student at a time. This thesis presents the animated TV series The Simpsons as a compelling example of the role popular culture plays in motivating and engaging student participation in the classroom. By focusing on the shows' satirical underpinnings, referential humour, and carefully-crafted subplots, The Simpsons becomes a powerful classroom tool for engaging students, facilitating critical discourse around issues of diversity and promoting peaceful, interactive classroom communities. By discussing relevant educational theory as illustrated by examples of the show's tongue-in-cheek critique of our society, we will come to see The Simpsons as a valuable classroom resource (and so much more than simply a silly cartoon).

Abstract:
Introduction: Simpson’s biplane method is the most used method for determining the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in echocardiographic examinations. Ejection fraction is a central measurement of the heart's global systolic function. The probe with piezoelectric crystals emits ultrasound waves with a frequency above 20,000 Hz. The sound waves that are sent out into the body are reflected and then return to the probe to create an image. This study compares the two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound Simpson's biplane method with the Philips Heart Model method, which is an automated three-dimensional (3D) function for assessment of LVEF.                                                                                                                          Material and method: 31 subjects with no recorded heart pathologies between the ages of 21-64 were included in the study. Apical 4- and 2-chamber images were collected from the test subjects, where the Simpson's biplane method was applied to calculate the ejection fraction. 2D apical 4-chamber images were collected to convert to 3D and used to calculate the ejection fraction with the Philips Heart Model.    Results: The results of this study showed that there is no significant difference between the Simpson’s biplane method and the Philips Heart Model method for determining ejection fraction.    Discussion: The Philips Heart Model method is a relatively new feature that uses artificial intelligence to analyze 3D images. The Philips Heart Model method is a reliable feature to use as most studies have proven similar and reliable measurements when comparing it with other methods for determining LVEF.    Conclusion: According to this study, the Philips Heart Model feature provides equivalent measurements in comparison with the manual method Simpson's biplane.

Having in mind that meaning generation involves several aspects to be considered, this research is developed on The Simpsons text, on which, through an intertextual analysis of the simpsoninan parodistic text, we intend to outline a parallel between parody and intertextuality when a product of apparently globalized understanding is build up, but which also keeps both deeper meanings and intentions between its lines. While examinig probable desired meaning by the authors of the series, we present a five-episode analysis (1997-2007), whose intertextuality, most time shown explicitly, reminds the viewers to television enuncations, literature texts, social-historic texts and linguistics expressions used not only in the American Culture, but also in the Western Culture as a whole. To exam our time patch under the Meida Culture focus, we were served theory knowledge from several related areas, however, the produced text is based firmly on theories from Discourse Analysis, Semiotics and the New Theories about Communication.

Abstract: Having in mind that meaning generation involves several aspects to be considered, this research is developed on The Simpsons text, on which, through an intertextual analysis of the simpsoninan parodistic text, we intend to outline a parallel between parody and intertextuality when a product of apparently globalized understanding is build up, but which also keeps both deeper meanings and intentions between its lines.

With the object of analysis the episode "Blame it on Lisa" series of U.S. "The Simpsons", this study discusses the process of images construction on Brazil, from view and foreign relations of identity and otherness, strangeness and identifications. The choice this episode lies in the fact describes the Simpsons family visit to Brazil and thus constructs a narrative based on criticisms and stereotypes about the characters and the Brazilian culture. Launched in 2002, the episode caused quite a stir among viewers and Brazilian government. The development of this research will be guided mainly in Cultural Studies, through analysis of the episode, from literature and other content (movies, books, newspapers, magazines, etc.) that give us clues to understanding how images on the country, from one perspective "foreign", built up marked by stereotypes. Starting from the unrest caused by the images reproduced in the country foreign films, we discuss how this gaze is directed to “ourselves", how the process of constructing this Brazil‟s portrait and the size of the dialogue between the gaze of the "other" and the native, having in view of the identities of Brazil and Brazilian forged by "ourselves."

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience. Following overviews of meme theory and fan studies, this thesis synthesises methods from both fields to analyse one of this generation’s most notable televisual fan-texts, The Simpsons, and its fandom. The memetic analysis thereof, integrated with the works of fan theorists including John Fiske and Henry Jenkins, reveals the implications of the fan-text’s memetic content in the economic, cultural and social capital interests of its creators, distributors, and fans. The revelations credited to the memetic aspect of the analysis support the conjecture that it is a suitable analytical framework for the fields of fan and screen studies.

Abstract:
Although animated sitcom fiction has always been the focus of researchers analysis, historical studies about animated series aired on TV are still scarce. Moreover, whether researchers have investigated animated sitcoms, it was not with the intention of discussing their relation to the images of Brazil and Brazilians conveyed both on TV and the Internet. Because of that the object of study of this thesis is the discussion of socio-historical-political dimensions in The Simpsons , a profitable animated sitcom and a satirical parody of a working class American lifestyle family, whose episodes have been aired on Brazil and all over the world s TV channels for more than two decades. Therefore, the corpus of this investigation is some of the series episodes, notably Blame it on Lisa during which the fictional family travels to Brazil. With the objective of bringing to light the representations of Brazil in the last decades the research makes use of the internauts speech acts of which emerge their critical discourse construction of the The Simpsons. The Internet, an interesting locus to reveal Brazil and its relation to the American production of series, is also used not only in an attempt to define simpsonized language and discuss the (re)signification of Brazil s imagery as created by the internauts, but also to put to question concepts such as family, childhood, criminality, violence, sexuality in children s programs and the lampooning of Brazilian identity symbols, always treated in an unflattering or negative light, in the search for larger audiences (Top 30 ratings) and for money, categories also selected for the development of this work. Still, anthropophagy, a category largely used in Brazilian literary (con)texts in the beginning of the XX century, supported the analysis of internauts and actual viewers perception of the series as a point of departure for helping engender behavior and attitudes that can help rebuild realities, via massive media, even if inspired by The Simpsons, and mainly based upon criticism revealed by the episode Blame it in Lisa. On the one hand, the text attests the capacity of Brazilians, by means of using communicative technologies, for reacting against the negative satirical portrait of Brazil and Brazilians and on the other, for rescuing this image, even if utilizing that simpsonized language . Research leads to the conclusion that Brazilian internauts and actual viewers do not watch The Simpsons passively but stand up against the unflattering insinuations in relation to Brazilian culture, society, history, folklore, Brazil and the Brazilian people, and try to rescue those images conveyed by the sitcom episodes, especially the ones in Blame it on Lisa . And yet, the text evidences that certain images of Brazil and Brazilians represented in the animated sitcom expresses the troublesome reality of truthfully and because of that they have become one of the thesis concerns and another significant aspect to be considered. Such images are the reason for the investigator s raising relevant questions and his strongly suggesting accurate reflection and discussion on such a matter.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Although Audiovisual Translation has received considerable attention in recent years, evidence suggests that there is a paucity of empirical research carried out on the topic of ideological and cultural constraints in audiovisual translation from English into Arabic. This is despite the fact that subtitling and dubbing Western animation into Arabic has been on the increase ever since television sets entered Arab homes; which is why several authority figures are calling for tighter control and moral screening of what is aired on television sets, in particular that which is aimed at children. This study aims to add some understanding of the problems facing practitioners in the dubbing/subtitling industry, such as the reasons for their alleged reality distortion and how these problems are dealt with by the dubbing agencies. This is achieved by exploring the extent ideological and cultural norms, as weB as other agents, shape the outcome of dubbed English animations/films when rendered into Arabic by manipulation, subversion and/or appropriation. Fifty-two dubbed episodes of The Simpsons were selected for this study. The Simpsons was chosen due to its universal appeal and influence. It addresses many sensitive issues, such as sex, drugs, religion, politics, racial and gender stereotypes, with a bluntness and boldness rarely seen before, and goes beyond passive entertainment and school education. Therefore, it is looked at with suspicion and vigilance in the Arab World. The methodological approach adopted for this study is primarily qualitative, which is proven to provide the kind of expert understanding this study aims to achieve, as Denzin and Lincoln (1994) attest. Because this research springs from the conviction that the issues involved constitute a complex phenomenon, and because the aim is to uncover what could be learnt about intrinsic and extrinsic conditions, it is important to adopt Toury's (1980, 1995) descriptive translation studies paradigm as well as critical discourse analysis strategy. This paradigm enables researchers to describe, explore, analyse, interpret views of the participants, and bring forth the representational properties of the screen discourse as a vehicle for ideological and cultural power transfer. The contrastive analysis of the English and Arabic versions of The Simpsons yielded interesting results; it established that the translation process is marred by many intrinsic and extrinsic factors, either exercised by the translator or imposed upon him. Ideological and socio-cultural factors are the chief culprits in the case of translating The Simpsons into Arabic.

Full text
Abstract:
Assessment of left atrial size is important in diagnosis and disease prognosis, but also in risk assessment of serious cardiovascular diseases. The most common method for assessing the size of the left atrium is echocardiography. The left atrium can be estimated from different measurement methods where the volume measurement in the apical four-chamber view and the two-chamber view is the most common measurement that gives the most realistic result. The size can also be measured by measuring the anteroposterior diameter in the parasternal long-axis view. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the size differs significantly between the methods and to see if the measurement in the long-axis view underestimates the size compared with the volume measurements. In the study, 30 patients’ echocardiographic images were analyzed with volume measurement as well as measurement of the anteroposterior diameter. The correlation analysis showed a significant positive correlation with a coefficient of determination of 0,667 (P <0,001). The Bland-Altman plot showed that all values in addition to one, remain within a 95% confidence interval. When comparing size classification between the methods, 60% similarity was shown. The anteroposterior diameter is difficult for the inexperienced to perform correctly as there are many artifacts and the volume measurement is easier to learn. The volume measurement has a greater variation than the anteroposterior diameter, which may be due to the diameter being limited by the thoracic cavity. The conclusion is that the methods are statistically significant different and that the anteroposterior diameter underestimate the size of the left atrium compared with the volume measurements.

Abstract:
Online communities provide a fertile ground for analyzing people\'s behavior and improving our understanding of social processes. For instance, when modeling social interaction online, it is important to understand when people are reacting to each other. Also, since both people and communities change over time, we argue that analyses of online communities that take time into account will lead to deeper and more accurate results. In many cases, however, users behavior can be easily missed: users react to content in many more ways than observed by explicit indicators (such as likes on Facebook or replies on Twitter) and poorly aggregated temporal data might hide, misrepresent and even lead to wrong conclusions about how users are evolving. In order to address the problem of detecting non-explicit responses, we present a new approach that uses tf-idf similarity between a user\'s own tweets and recent tweets by people they follow. Based on a month\'s worth of posting data from 449 ego networks in Twitter, this method demonstrates that it is likely that at least 11% of reactions are not captured by the explicit reply and retweet mechanisms. Further, these uncaptured reactions are not evenly distributed between users: some users, who create replies and retweets without using the official interface mechanisms, are much more responsive to followees than they appear. This suggests that detecting non-explicit responses is an important consideration in mitigating biases and building more accurate models when using these markers to study social interaction and information diffusion. We also address the problem of users evolution in Reddit based on comment and submission data from 2007 to 2014. Even using one of the simplest temporal differences between usersyearly cohortswe find wide differences in people\'s behavior, including comment activity, effort, and survival. Furthermore, not accounting for time can lead us to misinterpret important phenomena. For instance, we observe that average comment length decreases over any fixed period of time, but comment length in each cohort of users steadily increases during the same period after an abrupt initial drop, an example of Simpson\'s Paradox. Dividing cohorts into sub-cohorts based on the survival time in the community provides further insights; in particular, longer-lived users start at a higher activity level and make more and shorter comments than those who leave earlier. These findings both give more insight into user evolution in Reddit in particular, and raise a number of interesting questions around studying online behavior going forward.

Abstract:
Writing in 1970 of Robert Simpson's music, Hugh Ottaway said, "Simpson's ideal is a Beethovenian dynamism and comprehensiveness, an active unity in which powerful forces are embraced and subdued: a sense of re-engagement with the humanist mainstream, clear-headed and unsentimental is implicit in everything he writes." Simpson's dogged musical integrity has resulted in a high degree of consistency and homogeneity in his compositional development. But in the thirty-seven years that he has been writing symphonies his approach to the ideals mentioned by Ottaway has deepened in strength and subtlety and his achievement has steadily increased in breadth and power. This dissertation traces his development as a symphonist. The discussion of Symphonies 1-3 demonstrates how their dynamic approach to tonality is expressed in terms of sustained keyconflict. Particularly close attention is given to the Third Symphony - probably the finest of the three. From the early 1970s onwards a change is detectable in the way In which Simpson organises his music. Emphasis upon keyconflict gives way to a concern with the generative powers of certain intervals and the analyses of the symphonies from No.4 onwards reflect the increasing concentration with which Simpson derives his material from a small group of intervals. The analytical approach to each work is essentially a narrative one in keeping with the organic manner in which Simpson's music grows. The dissertation ends with a brief commentary upon Symphony No.10 which, at the time of writing has only just been completed and remains unperformed.

Abstract:
Buster Simpson is a Seattle-based artist who creates work that revolves around environmental issues in public settings. His ecological messages reach local communities through works that are often funded by percent-for-art programs, non-profit organizations such as schools and museums, and other public institutions. By using recycled materials or by purifying water, Simpson's public art draws attention to the local environment, and his works provide examples of ways that people can care for their local surroundings. My thesis sheds light on Simpson's public and environmental work, detailing the creative manner in which he incorporates history, education, and artistic complexity into his sculptures. Through their aesthetics and their real-world utility, Simpson's works nurture neighborhoods.

Abstract:
I discuss the implications of Simpson’s paradox for epistemology and decision theory. In Chapter One I outline the paradox, focussing on its identification, nature, and type of reasoning that it involves. In Chapter Two I discuss the view that Simpson’s paradox is resolved by means of graph-based causal analysis. In Chapter Three I outline a major problem (hitherto unacknowledged) that Simpson’s paradox poses for the probabilistic Bayesian theory of evidence. I make a proposal to split the probabilistic concept of evidence into a causal and a news-value kind of evidence, tracking causal probabilities under an intervention, and tracking overall probabilistic relevance under conditioning. In Chapters Four and Five I apply the proposal to two further areas of concern. In Chapter Four I defend a unified causal view of Simpson’s paradox. In Chapter Five I defuse a problem about counterfactual force of evidence. In Chapters Six and Seven I discuss Simpson’s paradox and the sure thing principle in decision theory. I then conclude in Chapter Eight.

Abstract:
Robert Simpson's Third Symphony (1961-2) marks a transition between the two stages into which the composer's oeuvre is generally divided (as one of his last works based upon major/minor keys, before his conscious composition with intervals). It is unusual within Simpson's output in three respects: it incorporates models, from Beethoven; its genesis can be traced in two manuscript autograph scores and two published versions; and the autograph scores preserve unique revisions by the composer. The issues that arise in consequence are considered in the context of general influences upon the symphony, a description of the manuscripts and published scores, and remarks about manuscript interpretation. From an analysis of the modelling of the first movement upon the first movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, a reconstruction is offered of music lost from the earliest stage of composition. This reconstruction permits the elaboration of a hypothesis with respect to an atypical feature of Simpson's style: Simpson's revisions were most far-reaching where Beethoven's influence had initially been strongest. Further Beethovenian influences are identified, with their bearing on the manner in which Simpson revised and utilized the typical features of his style which are fundamental to the Third Symphony's symphonic structure: rhythm and pace, tonality and harmony. The influence of these revisions upon Simpson's Fourth and Fifth Symphonies is also investigated. With reference to the Beethoven influences identified earlier, parallels are drawn between developments in Simpson's style, and Beethoven's between his 'second' and 'third' periods. 'Suggestion' (a process used by Simpson, of statement 'by implication', related to compositional compression in the revisions) is discussed and considered as a metaphor for the development of Simpson's style as Beethoven's influence upon him weakened. A brief comparison of Simpson's Third Symphony with his Fourth and Fifth Symphonies is also included.

Abstract:
This thesis is devoted to two arithmetic variants of Simpson's correspondence. In the first part, I compare the p-adic Simpson correspondence with a p-adic analogue of the Narasimhan-Seshadri's correspondence for curves over p-adic fields due to Deninger and Werner. Narasimhan and Seshadri established a correspondence between stable bundles of degree zero and unitary representations of the topological fundamental group for a complex smooth proper curve. Using parallel transport, Deninger and Werner associated functorially to every vector bundle on a p-adic curve whose reduction is strongly semi-stable of degree 0 a p-adic representation of the fundamental group of the curve. They asked several questions: whether their functor is fully faithful; whether the cohomology of the local systems produced by this functor admits a Hodge-Tate filtration; and whether their construction is compatible with the p-adic Simpson correspondence developed by Faltings. We answer positively these questions. The second part is devoted to the construction of a lifting of the Cartier transform of Ogus-Vologodsky modulo pⁿ. Let W be the ring of the Witt vectors of a perfect field of characteristic p, X a smooth formal scheme over W, X' the base change of X by the Frobenius morphism of W, X'_2 the reduction modulo p² of X' and Y the special fiber of X. We lift the Cartier transform of Ogus-Vologodsky relative to X'_2 modulo pⁿ. More precisely, we construct a functor from the category of pⁿ-torsion O_{X'}-modules with integrable p-connection to the category of pⁿ-torsion O_X-modules with integrable connection, each subject to a suitable nilpotence condition. Our construction is based on Oyama's reformulation of the Cartier transform of Ogus-Vologodsky in characteristic p. If there exists a lifting F: X -> X' of the relative Frobenius morphism of Y, our functor is compatible with a functor constructed by Shiho from F. As an application, we give a new interpretation of relative Fontaine modules introduced by Faltings and of the computation of their cohomology

Diversity as a concept was first introduced by Williams in Fisher et al. (1943). Later, Good (1953, 1982) proposed a generalized index that included as special cases both Shannon’s and Simpson’s indices. Baczkowski et al. (1997, 1998) generalized the proposed generalization deriving the first four moments and then obtaining a distribution prior to the general index for Good (BACZKOWSKI et al., 2000). Therefore, is proposed a new generalization that, in addition to the indices the Shannon and Simpson as special cases, includes more general indices such as the unfamiliar (PATIL & TAILIIE, 1982). The moments of h(a,b,d) presented here extend the results presented in Baczkowski et al. and Bowman et al. for a class of diversity indices of more general and it is concluded then that while the distribution of index Shannon can be approximated by a Gaussian distribution, if any difference between abundance of species, to more general values of (a,b,d), it is suggested a distribution of type I as the most appropriated. The results are also consistent with those presented for real populations, as in Heip & Engels (1974), especially when it examines the index of Shannon.

Abstract:
The function of erytrophagocytosis observed after blood extravasation in the maternal-fetal interface is indefinite various species, including the water buffalo. In ewe, this process had been hardly studied and it occurs in the placentome arcade zone (top of maternal septa), region where the process is performed by the trophoblast. It is possible that iron is being transferred to the fetus through the trophoblastic erytrophagocytosis in the hemophagous areas of the placenta and in the endometrial glands. In our research we have been using placentomes of buffaloes between 2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 and 10 months of pregnancy, fixed by perfusion with 10% formaldehyde aqueous solution, 4% paraformoldehyde for light microscopy and 2,5% glutaraldehyde for transmission electron microscopy, processed and stained for light microscopy (HE, Toluidine blue, Gomori trichrome, hematoxilin - floxin, methilen blue ? basic fucsin), histochemistry (Perls, PAS and acid phosfatase reaction) and transmission electron microscopy. The methodology used allowed us to observe that the haemophagous areas were present in determined regions of the placentome, in which there were showing haemorragic areas between the trophoblastic and uterine epithelium, in 4-10 months pregnant placentae. Erythrocytes had been found inside trophoblastic cells, thus contributing to explain the erytrophagocytosis. The PAS reaction was positive, staining mucoid substance, mainly in the basis of the fetal villi, trophoblastic binucleate cells and in an endometrial glands in the interplacentomal region. The Perls reaction was negative in the placenton as well as in the endometrial glands. The acid phosphatase reaction was positive in placenton as well as in the interplacentomal region. The ultrastructure of the haemophagous areas revealed ingested erythrocytes inside the epithelial cells of trophoblast in different phases of digestion and electrondensities, various endocitic vesicles, caveolae, many lipid droplets, well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum and large number of mitochondrias. The endometrial glands epithelium of interplacentomal region is columnar type with microvilli and basal nuclei.

Abstract:
A static chamber technique was used to measure methane emissions in July and August, 1995 from peatland sites in the Fort Simpson area, Northwest Territories, at the southern fringe of the discontinuous permafrost zone. Sites were classified ecologically and geomorphologically, and water table and temperature regimes were monitored.
Methane emissions ranged from $-$3.3 to 1144.2 mg/m$ sp2 cdot$d, from raised frozen sites to pond sites, respectively, similar to emissions recorded from other boreal regions. Water table was the strongest predictor of CH$ sb4$ emission. Although peat temperature is significantly correlated to methane flux, it did not significantly improve the flux-water table relationship. Methane storage within the saturated portion of the peat profile ranged from 0.2 to 4.2 g/m$ sp2$ over depths ranging from 30 to 76 cm, and did not play a large role in surficial emissions. The zone immediately above and below the water table appears to regulate methane diffusion to the surface. Residence times (storage/flux) ranged from 12 to 30 days in poor fens, and from 6 to 5789 days in fens.
Ranges and mean fluxes of methane were determined according to landform and water table position. Based on the geomorphology of the area, overall flux determined for the Fort Simpson area, map NTS 95H, NW1/4, is estimated to be 19 mg/m$ sp2 cdot$d.

Abstract:
Rates of carbon and peat accumulation were studied in a series of peat landforms within discontinuously frozen peatlands near Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories. An extended distribution of the White River volcanic ash layer was used as a chronostratigraphic horizon to ensure a consistent time span of peat deposition among peat cores and to allow a large core sample size without the expense of radiocarbon dating. Apparent recent carbon accumulation rates measured over the past 1200 years were not significantly different among rich fen, peat plateau, and collapse fen (means 13--14 g C M-2 yr-1). Poor fen and bog mean accumulation rates were 20--22 g C M-2 yr -1 and were not significantly different from each other. Microtopography and water table position appear to be important controls on both carbon and vertical peat accumulation rates. A regional survey incorporating measurements from other parts of the southwestern Northwest Territories and the southeastern Yukon shows rates similar to those near Fort Simpson.
The aggradation of permafrost results in 50 and 65% decreases in carbon and vertical peat accumulation rates, respectively. Carbon and peat accumulation continue to decrease significantly with both increasing permafrost maturity and the number of ground fires. The internal degradation of permafrost results in nearly a doubling in carbon accumulation rates, yet permafrost degradation at the margins of a peat plateau results in carbon accumulation rates similar to the peat plateau.
Clymo's (1984) carbon accumulation model was applied to cores from each landform in addition to a core spanning the entire developmental history of the peatland. Results indicate that true carbon accumulation and sequestration efficiency rates in ombrotrophic peatlands are lower in the upper Mackenzie Valley than for other boreal regions, primarily owing to high decomposition rates. The cessation of carbon accumulation is being approached. The model also serves to highlight the dangers of using apparent and true carbon accumulation rates interchangably.
Apparent and true carbon accumulation rates are significantly lower than published rates from other parts of northern Canada, Finland, and the Former Soviet Union. Low and variable summer precipitation in the region may be a significant factor through increased aerobic decomposition and/or decreased plant production caused by moisture stress.
