Radiation-induced damage and degradation to shielding and structure materials in nuclear reactors is one of the key limiting factors that affect the safety considerations and the lifetime. Neutron radiation damages materials mainly by exciting a number of Primary Knock-on Atom (PKAs). It has been suggested that a narrow wave spectrum (in frequency or direction) combined with a large wave steepness may lead to increased occurrence of extreme waves. Parameters based on the ratio of the wave steepness to the spectral band-widths have therefore been suggested as indicators of increased probability of extreme w

A moored structure shows both wave and low frequency motions in waves. Wave frequency motions are related to the wave elevation and wave power spectrum of the sea state while low frequency motions are driven by wave groups and the corresponding wave group spectrum. Wave power spectra can be calibrated for model tests. The corresponding wave group spectrum follows from the wave power spectrum together with the applied wave seed or phasing of the wave train. Thus, in common practice (both in simulations and model tests), the wave group spectrum follows from the arbitrary choice of a random seed.
